Default Growls in the Forest: A Russian Campaign History

Hi everyone. After enjoying beefeater's HRE vignette, and becoming excited reading the other great stories going on right now, I thought I'd try my hand at narrating a short Russian campaign.

This will be my first time playing on VH/VH difficulty, so anything might happen. To add some difficulty, I'm going to try a novel approach to battles: the general's command rating will be roleplayed to the extent I'm able. Generals with anemic stars will tend toward sedentary governor careers under this system, but if I get someone starting with Natural Commander or better, they'll be played smarter and more aggressively in combat as they try to buck up to their full potential.

The only mod in use is Seneschal.the's excellent VnV tweak, Medifix.

Growls in the Forest: The Tale of the Bear, the Wolf, and the Fox.

The land of the Rus in 1088 is a fractious, lawless place. The royal court at Kiev has lost control of the country and it is every noble for himself. Our story follows the history of the Dukedom of Novogrod as it struggles to gain dominion over the vast expanse of Russia, and perhaps, lands farther afield.

    Power Players

Grand Duke Ysevolod has problems. The aging ruler is quite old by medieval standards, and in failing health. On top of this, the duke has witnessed the slow breakdown of his authority in the provinces bordering Novogrod, to the point where most of them have declared independence and every strongman in the North has turned himself into a petty king. Ysevolod can feel his own mortality creeping in, and may have plans to do something audacious to secure his legacy.

Young Prince Vladimir is heir to the throne of Novogrod, though that is not a fact he relishes. The prince is disinterested in the affairs of state and attempts to shirk any duties given to him by his father. Vladimir reserves his passion for the finer aspects of court life: girls, high stakes gambling, and all the luxuries that are available to a rich playboy at the top of society. The Novogrodian Duma (The Council of Nobles, whom are called Boyars) does not look forward to his ascent to the throne.

Boyar "Horsehair" Mikhail, so dubbed because of his love for the beasts, is a rough-and-tumble country noble who serves the Novogrodian Court. He is a passionate supporter of the Duke and is willing to further his lord's interests on the battlefield, if need be. With his integration into the ruling family via his marriage to Princess Antonina, Mikhail's loyalty is secure.

    And so the tale begins...

Personal journal of Astinus Demarydon, scribe and counsellor to Grand Duke Ysevolod, Autumn 1088

The nights are so cold here... but I should be used to them by now. As much as I yearn to see the spires of my former home, and relax in its warm baths, I do not regret my decision to stay in Novogrod, nor am I ungrateful for the kindness my master has shown me and my new family. At least here, among these simple folk, one does not have to keep a hand on one's purse, and an eye searching every shadow for the glint of steel.

I have traveled with the Duke to the frigid outlands, to the bleak backwater outpost called Helsinki. My master encircles the town with his forces, and will give the order to attack at any moment. A survey of our troops leaves me unconfident. Truly, that this motley crew of rascals could be of any use on a battlefield strains the imagination. However, they seem eager enough to fight while standing in the shadow of their lord's personal standard. It is said the Duke wishes to leave this conquest as a legacy after his tempestuous reign. Some of the men whisper he wants die a warrior's death, rather than perish miserably in bed, eaten alive by the disease that ravages his mind... There is commotion in the camp now, the battle must be beginning!

Burning Men perish in a decidedly unfestive manner at the Battle of Helsinki.

After a brief battle, our troops are in control of the fort. It was amusing to behold the mens' blazing bolts rain down upon the hapless defenders. Duke Ysevolod led the spearmen into the central square personally, easily scattering the barbarians that tried to make a stand there. While the Duke is obviously satisfied with the completeness of his victory here, he still remains uneasy, pacing about his room and barking orders to deputies with unusual ferocity.

We wintered in the fort, then the Duke gave orders to tear down the fortifications so as to convert the settlement into a peaceful trading town. Meanwhile, we received word that Boyar Mikhail has reestablished ducal authority in Smolesk, south of Novogrod. The Duma was so pleased with Mikhail's efforts that they gave Duke Ysevolod personal control of the powerful Baltic navy: four ships in all.

    A Journey Too Far

I am now aboard ship, sailing west toward the storied homeland of the vikings. I do not know why the Duke made the snap decision to invade Stockholm, but it is obvious he is being focused and driven by some inner desire. He tells me stories of the valour and glory of his anscestors; how they fought like bears, with a courage unlike that of normal men. My master has dictated to me a letter, along with instructions that if he does not survive the campaign, I should deliver it to his son, Vladimir. I plan to copy it into my journal tomorrow...

Like it so far, and I cannot give any suggestion for this may be your 'style'.

What I do love, however, is that this is not a broad overview of the campaign. Seems as it the reader is left in the dark about many things, as only the scribes point of view is given. Adds to the suspension

    Nice start "General Zhukov".

Well written. My only suggestion would be more pictures if possible, although it may not be your prerogative to show that much.

Look forward to reading more. Thank you for taking the time to put this together.

Great AAR, General Zhukov. I'm looking forward to the next part already. No, I'm salivating in anticipation instead of just looking.

Most excellent. I'm playing a Russian campaign right now. I see you've also been blessed by the 4 Lad'Yas

The scribe's view is certainly interesting. I'd be curious to hear a bit about Vladmir though. Is he sitting pretty back at home?

Journal of Astinus Demarydon, Summer 1090

I delivered the news and the letter to Prince Vladimir personally. I told him of Stockholm. What follows is the official court history of that day, written by myself.

    The Battle of Stockholm

The Russian levies of Grand Duke Ysevolod drew up on the outskirts of unwalled Stockholm, haggard from weeks at sea, but eager to be over with the day's work and warm themselves with a confiscated wench, beside a fairly won hearth. The ferocious norsemen defending the settlement waved their axes in taunt, "singing" drinking songs in their guttural language.

The fighting began with an exchange of arrows between the sides. Impressed with our archer's superior misslery, and clearly frightened by the approaching menace of Russian spearmen, the enemy bowmen quickly withdrew across the lone bridge back into town. Next came the horrific clash of spear and axe as the melee began. Our men were temporarily reversed by the norsemens' pagan ferocity, but fell back having dealt the barbarians a heavy blow. What occured next was truly spectacular; worthy of legend and song. Mighty Duke Ysevolod charged with his guard headlong into the mass of heathens, throwing them back and forcing them to flee toward the city center.

    For Honor and Glory!

Not one for half-measures, the duke pursued the cowards into the maze of buildings that form Stockholm's outer ring, far outpacing his recovered spearmen that were trying desperately to catch up. For every drop of noble blood he shed that day, our fearless leader made the pagans pay gallons. Despite such heroics, the norsemen, using the deceit inherent in the trickerous hearts of those who are far from the Lord, managed to surround and cut off the duke from the rest of his army.

    Duke Defiant

A lucky axe blow struck the duke squarely; surrounded by dead foes he fell.

    A Noble Life Ends

Incensed by the death of their leader, our angry soldiers stormed into the city, quickly skewering the remaining opposition. By nightfall, the place lay in the hands of brave Russians.

Let any whose minds were clouded to the courage and honor of our Grand Duke be set right. Let his bravery at Stockholm give heart to those who look to the Dukedom of Novogrod for the strength to bring hope to the downcast eyes of our people!

    The Letter

Following this eulogy, I read to Vladimir his father's letter:

Son, if you hear this it is because I will not be returning from campaign, which means you are now Grand Duke in my place. You must put aside your childish things and live up to the example of your fathers. Our people suffer under the rule of petty men: both stubborn boyars and the weak royals of the South. Find the strength to do what I could not: unite the boyars and unite the Rus.

As you go about this task, remember the wisdom of my father: "The Rus are like the mighty bear of the forest, sturdy and strong but with the weakness of being good-natured. The other predators in the forest will take advantage of him unless he is careful. Beware especially the Poles, those wolves, who are ravenous always and roam the woods ceaselessly in search of weak prey. To defeat them you must never reveal your weak place. Of all other forest creatures, you must be concerned only with the fox, whose tribe is made of those descended from the Scourge of God. You will find the fox always gnawing at your heels, but he hides once you turn to hit him. The only way you will get rid of him for good is to seek out his den and destroy it." My son, may God show you the right path, and give you the strength to do what must be done.

    Signed, Grand Duke Ysevolod
    X

Before my new master and I could discuss the recent developments, or his new mandate, messengers bearing dire news intruded upon our solitude. The very provinces freshly annexed were already in open riot! Duke Vladimir agreed with my suggestion that the majority of the home garrison be deployed to try and snuff the violence. It was decided that the Duma will convene to help determine the next course of action. For the sake of thoroughness, I made a map sketch detailing the current situation. I have added it to my notes.

Journal of Astinus Demarydon, scribe and counsellor to Grand Duke Vladimir Summer, 1096

    Dumb and Duma

The Duma convened this spring with disturbingly little puff and pomp. Apparently wrestling nobles and ladies allowed to suckle children in view of the peasants is what passes for pageantry in these lands. But I digress...

I, negotiating for the Duke, was able to forge agreement on several key matters. Firstly, a proposal of mine to subsidize agriculture and trade in all annexed settlements was eagerly adopted. The boyars suggested one of their own, , govern the growing town of Smolesnk, which was acceptable to the duke. General consensus was gained that the wisest course would be to expand easterly and southeasterly. The important matter of succession was settled: "Horsehair" Mikhail was recognized as the closest ducal family member, and along with the strength of his accomplishments campaigning in the south, was unanimously supported as heir. The only policy Duke Vladimir forced the boyars to agree to was a rather draconian tax scheme that applied to all settlements, current and future. Impressed with my role in the successful Duma, Vladimir put me in charge of most administrative duties in the dukedom, giving instructions only to be disturbed with matters of utmost importance. The lazy [donkey].

    Decadence, and Its Rewards 1102

Years have passed. Grand Duke Vladimir enjoys life among the fops of court and clubs of the captial. So long as his treasure room is kept overstuffed and the entertainments in Novogrod continue to be upgraded, the duke dabbles blessedly little in the affairs of state. One silver lining to the duke's extravagance is that the places he frequents attract some very resourceful individuals. Individuals that I have begun employing in the service of the court...

    The Wolves Are Out There

Reports are coming in of wolves on the western border:

    The Poles Smell Weakness

It seems Duke Ysevolod is already proving prescient. Prince Mikhail favors a direct confrontation with the interlopers after he has finished securing Vilnius. However, the duke prefers to stymie Horsehair and divert money elsewhere. Is he fearful of the prince's popularity with the boyars? Regardless, it is unwise to starve our best general of resources and support. I have begun working with some like-minded boyars to ensure Horeshair has available backchannel monies.

    Fawn Falls

As expected, a stand-off approach to the Polish incursions has resulted in their killing of a weak fawn, and next door to our capital at that!

    A Bold Move

With Riga in foreign hands, the duke still refuses to authorize military action. I suspect he imagines a war against the Poles will sap funds that could otherwise be used to supplement his lifestyle.

    Prophecy Fulfilled

The consequences of apathy reveal themselves! The wolf has proven that his appetite will not be sated by small meals. They have found our weak place, the throne, and are lunging in for the kill.

    Poles Blitz on Turn 20

Vilnius is under siege, Novogrod is cut off at sea and will likely be under siege within the month. When I delivered the news to the duke, his face became a mask of fear. He transferred emergency powers to me, then locked himself in his private chambers. What a child! My master sought salvation in the embrace of wenches and drink, but the salvation of the Rus will only come at the point of a sword. I must make final preparations for Novogrod and send messages to Mikhail and the boyars. May God watch over us.

Excellent creative writing. I'm loving how this is playing out and I'm wondering if you're making deliberate decisions to make this campaign play out wrong just to fit in character.

This AAR is the reason I started a Rus campaign.

Fantastic, I love the concise style, cutting down on irrelevant details and concentrating on the big picture and the drama. It keeps the pace at a good speed and stops the interest from fading. Looking forward to the next installment
