I was actually counting on that to happen and its not a problem for me, I'd still play her after she is married.

I wouldn't want anyone to be unconfortable because of me though.

Okay, based on that last comment I'm going to say we should not offer the princess to EF. She may not be what he's looking for, if you know what I mean.

I have no problems with people roleplaying an agent character of any kind, as long as it is understood that an agent cannot be a Senator in any sense of the term. No voting, no running for office, no advancing in rank. The rules specifically state that people can only use family members and recruitable generals as avatars. If you want to create stories and make IC posts with an agent persona, that's fine. However, you will need a family member or recruitable general in order to do anything outside of storytelling and RP conversation.

I figured as much for no voting, no running for office, no advancing in rank. That being said if I don't mind losing all of that, could I play the princess as my main character? I usually like playing a "supporting" role in games anyways.

So, if its ok, I'll switch my signup from RGB to Anna Komnenos.

a.) Marrying off the Princess is a power the FL has and since his influence will probably drop throughout the game, we shouldn't weaken the position too much.

b.) We are roleplaying patriarchy. Back then, if your father was a monarch and told you to marry someone, you did it. I'm sure there were exceptions but it seemed more common to just have someone "on the side". I'm sure that little aspect would be interesting to RP...

Other than that, I say have fun with it. EO showed that a non-voting member can still have tons of influence on the game.

Of course, the princess is often little more than a "tool" for her family. Although in the Byzantine Empire, women sometimes took power and were seen as legitimate, that's not supported by the game and thus won't happen. The princess will have little real power I assume, only a certain amount of influence dependant on the roleplay.

Exactly, at best she could try to influence the decision, but her father gets the final word. I recall that the first christian king of what is now Russia wanted to seal the deal with the Byzantine Empire by marrying the emperor's sister. At first he agreed, but once his sister begged him not to be married of to a northern "barbarian" he called of the deal. War ensued, the Empire had too many problems and the emperor sued for peace, thus giving away his sister in marriage even though she still protested.

But EO was actually a woman...Flax is not...

Fortunately, because of the Alexiad, there is a good amount of information available on Anna Komnenos. I believe I found two books on her and then there are a few books on women (mostly imperial women) in the time we are playing. All of the above should help me craft a believable persona that you will all hopefully enjoy interacting with.

Finally thanks to everyone for their support and I'm sorry if I somewhat derailed this thread.

If Flax wants to RP Anna, I have no problem with it. However as the FL I'm either going to marry her off to a RGB or a foreign Prince at some point. This would mean that her avatar would disappear from the campaign map.

Now that wouldn't stop any additional RPing, but if Flax wants to fully participate in the game (vote and fight) he'd be better off with a Senator.

I believe ATPG already volunteered for the jester. To be honest, I think this can only enliven the experience, so I'm all for it, so long as people understand that those characters will be constrained.

We already have 30 people signed up. That's plenty for the first Senate session. I would prefer to hold off on advertisement until we're a few turns into the game. It will be easier to absorb people at that time and newbies with no knowledge of the game will be able to see it in action.
