With this thread I hope to start a .Org collection of the best free software - both freeware and open source. This will be a benefit to all in the Kingdom of Peace and Love who do not wish to pay for nor pirate software. So post links (and comments) regarding the best free programs available, please! I'll edit contributions into this first post for future quick reference.
The only rule:
No "Trial Versions" or Demos.
Free releases of otherwise pay-for-license software is OK, like Winamp (see below).
Number of entries: 94+
Number of open source entries: 33+
I'm now too lazy to count.
Entry Format - posting in this format helps me out! I would be much obliged if you did.
-------------------------
Title
Homepage The homepage (or something close) of the program. Please make a note if it isn't a direct homepage.
OS: The operating systems it runs on, to the best of your (and my) knowledge: Win, Mac, Linux etc
Open Source: Is the software's code available? (See below for more info): Yes/No
Description: Tell us it's function and why it belongs on the list. A few sentences is all that is needed.
-------------------------
What is this "Open Source" you speak of?"
Open Source goes beyond "free" - the usual analogy is that open source software is "free like in beer and speech." The general public has legal access to the source code of the software, the code used to make the program.
Wikipedia
Sourceforge.net - The best site for open source developers (and those who look for open source stuff)!
The entries are organized alphabetically within each category, favoring open source software over non-open source.

OS: None needed!
Open Source: Yes
Description: What is KNOPPIX®?
KNOPPIX is a bootable Live system on CD or DVD, consisting of a representative collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a productive Linux system for the desktop, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it (over 8GB on the DVD "Maxi" edition).
Comment: It's very popular as a rescue system and brings a lot of tools and it's not only suitable for advanced users. You can get other Live-CD Operating systems here: http://www.linuxiso.org/index.php
It's a good way to test linux without installing it.

MP3Gain analyzes and adjusts mp3 files so that they have the same volume.
MP3Gain does not just do peak normalization, as many normalizers do. Instead, it does some statistical analysis to determine how loud the file actually sounds to the human ear.
Also, the changes MP3Gain makes are completely lossless. There is no quality lost in the change because the program adjusts the mp3 file directly, without decoding and re-encoding.

The installer comes with several options that increase and add more detail level to what kind of codecs you'd like to install.

Description: A completely free first person adventure/horror game. The game is created by Frictional Studios and is intended as a demonstration of their new physics technology. The physics really are suberb and puts the likes of Valve's source engine and the Havok physics system to shame. The game is set in a haunted underground base in Greenland. The main character discovers the base whilst looking for clues about the wherabouts of their father. Penumbra involves plenty of puzzles that put the physics system to full use, as well as action-packed moments involving advanced AI and lots of dynamite. Plenty of parallels can be drawn between this and Doom 3, Thief, and any other remotely scary game involving lots of dark claustrophic interiors. The puzzles are excellent and the graphics are good enough to rival the latest next-gen titles.
