Following this thread has made we wonder how the Union generals in this IH have managed to be even more incompetant than their real life counterparts - I would have thought that was impossible!! In real life, despite the presence of some of the most talented generals in history - Lee, Jackson - and some fine troops, the Confederates still got ground down and defeated by the sheer numbers and technological advantages of the North. In our rerun the IH Union generals seem to have lost the war in about a fortnight - now that is some achievement!!

KK, you are kiddin', aren't you. Can't you see that we are holding all the cards? Unlike the real northern guys we were willing to fight and so the rebels suffered high casualties each turn. Have a look at the human reserves we have and they have. They had to stop recruitment pretty soon. Alright, we are not allowed to recruit new soldiers as well now, but that does not matter. We lured half of the rebels into our territory, blinded by their foolish southern pride and ignorance. Warman can easily deal with them while I can finish those dislocated and exhausted rebs in the west.
Even if the rebels would gain a peace, do you really think that there would be two American states for long. The north has the people, the north has the factories, the north has technology. And the Yankees always had the destination to control the whole continent.

Fisherking, I see that my most Christian cherity will do no good. Therefore I will have to teach you rebels a lesson. Anyway, I am not fighting against women and children. Therefore I will give you time enough to evacuate Richmond where I will go to. I hope you will not hide behind skirts and we will finish this rebellion in a showdown!

I will be waiting for you around Canal Street and 21st Street.

I will give you a guided tour of your new accommodations.

You can have the best room in the house.

That would be Libby Prison, for Federal Prisoners...

I have little doubt you will make it to Richmond, one way or the other. Just don’t stand in front of you cannon and you will be fine.

Hey, be nice, they're just doing what Northerners are good at - ordering massive, costly, pointless frontal assaults. :P

Fisherking, I will meet you at the graveyard, that makes it easier for us to get rid of you after the showdown!
So, high noon at the graveyard. And yes, I will bring my guns:

    Ah no, I mean these:

Fred, you obviously miss the feeling for the fine art of war.

Having them is all well and good - it would appear however that your Union generals have used them to prop up the drinks cabinet as opposed to reading them!! If you guys had actually been in charge, Obama would be picking cotton on Donald Trump's plantation today!!

You really do not have a clue!
Of course we use these books, rather thick books in deed, to build barricade. This will surely stopp the rebels. Then we will use our superior tactics based on the book of Clausewitz and our fine strategy and political expertise, based on De Bello Gallico and will drive them back home.

Hey, I wasn't to concerned for this IH initally because I'm more used to a more detailed IH which explains my lack of care for having proper orders the first few rounds. It wasn't until DC was almost under siege then I started to become serious about this game.

Don't worry, Frederick the Great is on my side!!!!

Okay, just to make my job easier, I'm gonna post ONE of the battles this turn. The turn is NOT over yet, I am ONLY doing this so I can update the numbers of the Western Department for their next battle this turn.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Battle of Clifton Heights
USA: I-VI Corps, Army of New York(93,034 Men, 50 Guns)
CSA: I-VIII Corps, Western Department(74,067 Men, 100 Guns)

Description of Battlefield: Federal forces camp in and around a large town at the center of an 8-way crossroad, forming defensive lines in a semicircle. Just to the north of the town, a large hill is defended by an entire Federal Corps as well as all of the Federal Artillery. A reserve of two Corps ensures that the Federals will not suffer a breakthrough in their line - or at least, not without heavy losses to the attacker. Meanwhile, the Federal Left flank is in the air; it is loosely connected to the main body and has no defensive fortifications. However, the majority of the Confederate army is across from the Federal Right flank and Center, so there is little worry.

Meanwhile, the Confederate force, numbering roughly 20,000 men less, is concentrated on shattering the Federal line and pushing them back through the town. As such, they have amassed 3 Corps to face the large hill in the North - outnumbering the Federals there by 3-1 in terms of Brigades - as well as having the Infantry component of the 3 smaller Corps in the Confederate army(two Corps having three Infantry Brigades, the third only having two) facing the well-defended Federal center, which points inward so as to provide Enfilade fire to any who approach it. The Confederate right, which is connected to the rest of the army loosely at best, is angled so as to prevent the Center from being flanked, with the Confederate Extreme right flank being refused so THEY aren't flanked. Finally, the Confederate Artillery are amassed on a ridge just behind the Confederate Center.

    Confederate Assault on Federal Right:
USA: I Corps + 8th Artillery Brigade, Army of New York(17,800 Men)
CSA: I, II, and III Corps, Western Department(29,493 Men)

    Casualties and Losses:
    USA: 896 Killed, 1,793 Wounded
    CSA: 1,394 Killed, 2,889 Wounded, 2,000 Captured

Result: Three Confederate Corps stepped off and began their assault on the Federal right flank. The Center(2nd) Corps was subject to devestating Musket and Cannon fire; The Left(1st) Corps was outflanked by Federal reserves and almost was destroyed; but the Right(3rd) Corps almost made a breakthrough, facing only one Federal Brigade as resistance. However, when they saw the other two Corps pulling back, they decided it best to pull back as well.

    Confederate Assault on Federal Center:
USA: Infantry of V Corps(12,000 Men)
CSA: Infantry of IV, V, and VI Corps(21,934 Men)

    Casualties and Losses:
    USA: 684 Killed, 1,367 Wounded
    CSA: 1,134 Killed, 2,267 Wounded, 1,000 Captured

Result: Like on the Federal right, the Confederate forces charged headlong right into Federal lines, taking heavy Rifle fire all the way. After about half an hour, they broke and ran back to their starting position.

    Federal assault on Confederate Right:
USA: II and III Corps, Army of New York(32,000 Men)
CSA: VIII Corps, Western Department(12,000 Men)

    Casualties and Losses:
    USA: 928 Killed, 1,858 Wounded, 2,000 Captured
    CSA: 631 Killed, 1,267 Wounded

Result: The Federal assault on the Confederate right was one of the most near-run things in the entire war. Both sides took, proportional to their respective armies, heavy casualties, but the Federals were on the worse end of it.

    Confederate Flanking Maneuvre:
USA: IV Corps, Army of New York(16,000 Men)
CSA: VII Corps, Western Department(10,640 Men)

    Casualties and Losses:
    USA: 882 Killed, 1,763 Wounded, 2,000 Captured

CSA: 468 Infantry Killed, 936 Infantry Wounded
108 Cavalry Killed, 217 Cavalry Wounded
    Total: 576 Killed, 1,153 Wounded

Result: The Reserves of both armies moved to the southern end of the battlefield to try to swing the odds there in their favor, but the two forces ended up clashing and fighting. The Confederates had a Brigade of Cavalry mixed in with the Infantry, providing them with an extra bit of staying power. As a result, the Federals were beaten back with heavy losses.

    Total Casualties:
    USA: 3,390 Killed, 6,781 Wounded, 4,000 Captured
    14,171 Casualties Total

    CSA: 3,735 Killed, 7,576 Wounded, 3,000 Captured
    14,311 Casualties Total

Result of Battle: Stalemate, Strategic Federal Victory

Again, I am only doing this so I can update the numbers of the Western Department for their next battle this turn.

    Didn’t you hear?

England has entered the war, because of your poor performance, and launched an invasion from Canada into New York and Michigan.

Oh well, you can always negotiate to get your land back I suppose...
