I've seen the number of relevant posts begin to climb again, so it's time to bring back the tavern that many of you liked so much. I have a few requests though.
If you guys see spam posts, anywhere in the public forum, please report them. Keep the discourse here civil, and please don't let a lot of off-topic discussion spill all over the public forum.

Dang, musta come up as I was posting. Cool. Why not stickie it to keep the main forum clean?
Certainly not. The stickies are stickies because they are worth reading, being informative. I know this will not be the case with this one.

Bovi- granted- I never read the first EB Tavern. That kind of thing holds no interest for me. But it is obviously very interesting to many people, judging by the number of views and posts. By providing a convenient space for it, you could make them happy and keep the forum clean. Just my two euro cents.
Urnamma i'm wondering if your name has anything to do with Ur-Nammu - the Sumerian ruler ?

There were absolutely no problems involved with keeping the tavern on the first page of the forum in its previous incarnation. Personally I read the first 60 posts or so, but I gather there's been a lot of posting.
I'd rather have a clean set of stickies (heh, clean stickies...) than a clean set of first-page posts, and besides it would invariably end up on top of the forum; the first thing to greet new people. So, no way. Those who want to be certain to keep this visible, can individually sticky it for themselves.
Why doesn't EB have Mauryan War Rhinoceroses?:furious3:

Blacksnail: Well, a friend of mine has been invited to some conferance or other, and I´m kinda tagging along. I don´t intend to visit the conferance, but then again considering my friend works at the Swedish military´s research institution they might just be discussing some fun stuff at the conference. Of course, the funnier stuff the less chance they´re gonna let me through the security checks.
Guys, as was agreed upon in the old tavern there is no fighting allowed. Any overtly violent behavior will result in the immiediate removal of said person. Now, games are of course allowed, but please make sure the recipitent is also playing the game before you attempt to incapacitate him.
Oh, and if you see me lying half-dead drunk in a corner with a whisky bottle showed up my arse, don´t think it´s free killing time, Big Brother is always watching you, and Big Brothers minions (no, not in that way!) are always ready to ink poison you.

my personal favorite
Sam Adams Light
No, I did not scream like a woman after the first sip, but I did get an erection so stiff that pigeons could not only roost on it, but also roller skate across it. So, the ad hype around this beer is not completely inflated, it is actually an outstanding beverage. It's so good I'd even let Sam Adams nail me from behind and finish me off with a pearl necklace. Well, the pearl necklace may be a little much, but it is good.

The most infuriating thing in the modern world is the inability of people to distinguish an explanation from an excuse.
Just an example is the latest police shooting in New York and all the racial hooplah around it (never mind that both the cops and victim are black). When one explains that police violence is created by the government which oversees it; several factors are involved such as being overworked, underpaid, and having all actions under hyper-scrutiny by the city bureaucracy.
However, when one explains the factors leading to an action it is not an attempt to justify those actions. People seriously need to get a clue.
edit- People posting links to wikipedia as evidence in a discussion is the second most infuriating thing.

Bah, I hate it when games are released first for consoles.
I hate it even more when they won't be released for pc
GTA4 will be out on PC probably next year. The PC releases have come about a year after the console versions despite Rockstar always saying they'll be console-only.
The only games I play on consoles are sports games and that's because I'm too lazy to buy a good gamepad for my computer.
I got a PS3 only because of the new Star Wars game coming out.
then when the PC version comes out, you'll sell the PS3 and make lots of moneymuwahahahahahahahaha!!!

Actually I heard it will come on PC in Autumn. Gamepad? I don't know about you, but unless it's a flight simulator to require a joystick, I find the keyboard way more convenient. And besides (from my own experience), anything that can be played on a console, will be better if played on a PC.

I have the other GTA games for the PC and they are definitely designed with gamepads in mind.
I've played GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas on PC and a bit of GTA 3 on the PS2 (at a friend's house - for a few days), the gamepad controlls were utterly weird and cumbersome for me. I find much more versatillity with the keyboard.
I'd like more Coke please.
anyways Why bother?? they'll release the GTA 4 eventually on the PC..or maybe they won't.

I find the state of the road in that picture more surprising. I think parazitii put it best in their song:
Bani de la UE

The other thing which I find surprising is thar cars aren't parked in ad-hoc positions, but that may just be a Bucharest habbit. :sweatdrop:
Yeah, it's the liberal yellow-blue, but I wasn't expecting them to do a parade like that, they're supposed to be more of an upper class party, but with Tăriceanu at it's head, it kind of sunk. (not like PD-L is any better with Zeus as it's unofficial head-honcho :whip: )
So what passes for a liberal in Romania nowadays?

so what is PD-L and the liberals in Romania about?
catchy poem romano-dacis! I can imagine italians saying it the same way too:laugh4: (I can't help but notice that they sound alike)
Well, Zeus is how the members of the PD-L refer to our „dear” president Traian Băsescu.
The PD-L (Democrats/Democrat-Liberal Party) is the most migrationary large party in our politics, going from social-democracy to an unofficial combination between christian-democratic and liberal values in 3 years. It's a merger between the PD and the PLD, that split from the PNL (they don' admit it,but it was to join the PD). Lack of internal democracy within the party is worrying, and they are nicknamed the „presidential party”, they are no longer in government, but have control over the secret services via the president (who btw managed to set fire to 37 cargo ships on the Seine when he was a commercial navy captain ~D).
PNL (Liberals/National Liberal Party) form a minority government, not really popular due to both ex-PD subversive actions and it's own inability to provide good men for the ministries. Tăriceanu, chief liberal and prime-minister broke both his legs in 2 different motorcycle accidents during his mandate ~D.
PSD (Social Democratic Party) are now in opposition, their leadership is kind of fragmented, but they are still the 2nd rated party, and they (still) have some capable men.
PC (Conservative Party), low in polls, they may have good ideas, but are a bit undecided on how much to the right they are, they are in an electoral alliance with PSD.
PRM (Greater Romania Party), nationalists, but economically are center-left, went down on polls, leader constantly says polls are rigged, brought down the nationalist group within the European Parliament when Andreea Mussolini insulted Romanians.
UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania), „representing” the Hungarian minority, have been in every government since 1989.
So what passes for a liberal in Romania nowadays?
Theoretically the standard right-wing liberal, but after what Puiu Haşotti said during the NATO Summit („If we must have order, we will commit a minor injustice” aka excessive police repression during the summit) I'm not so sure anymore. We lack a Social Liberal party. :wall: We only have rightist liberal parties.

Tell Them What They Want To Hear
Concealed on timbers perched high above their heads, were intertwined the always watchful sight of Ohum’s subtle threads.
And faintly now, a mark here and there on twisted grains denote a cruel hint of this old rogue’s intent.
Hither, an unstrung bow with jagged darts strode by, and yonder a knotty club soundly held sauntered just beyond the eye, as amber chains clattered ever after.
If truth were never spoke, these countless golden ties bond kicking throngs that pulled, begged, and burled each mortal plight, into one distorted cord.
For extended, each treasured link ran back from every ear and in due course, affixed the mighty dulcet ring that pierced Ohum’s silver tongue.
For as it’s often told, that with a steady tug he heaps a never ending queue of human souls, to stave the Otherworld’s infernal cold.
Sent here to serve as warmth and light, chopped up as kindling, sat upon the hearth, and in the end consumed...
as firewood stokes the need and a hellish flame burns bright.

C'mon, we imperialist Romanians have to stand our ground: it ain't a world war until we're involved!! :laugh4:
I wouldn't classify a world war by how or where it's fought, but more so by the results from it. As such, I wouldn't qualify the Crimean War (which resolved pretty much nothing) or the Seven Year's War (once again, no result, the maps of Europe were redrawn ante bellum) as World Wars. In my book a World War needs to involve two or more superpowers, span at least two continents, and have a decisive outcome where the balance of power is evidently shifted. None of this "but after the 7 years war Britain gained this and France gained that" crap. Unless one of the major warring parties is completely annihilated from the diplomatic field (as happened in WW1 and WW2) it is not significant enough in the global balance of power to be a world war.
I would classify Alexander's campaign against the Persians, or all three Punic wars combined as world wars however, had Rome and Macedonia been superpowers (relative to their time). In these wars, the loser was decisively annihilated, the winner took control of vast swathes of land and resources, and was left largely unchallenged in their domain. These conflicts also spanned two continents (Europe and Asia, and Europe and Africa respectively). However, the fact that these weren't two superpowers going head-to-head means these wars also fail on their classification. At the time Macedonia was no more powerful than a Thracian confederacy and Rome was no more powerful than the Gauls.
C'mon, we imperialist Romanians have to stand our ground: it ain't a world war until we're involved!! :laugh4:

You have wars that took place within a 100 square mile area that would qualify as a world war by your definition.
to say the seven years war changed nothing is incorrect; looking at a map of north america and India in 1755, and the same in 1763 would clearly demonstrate that. most changes were to areas outside of Europe, and all over the world. also the costs of the war led to the UK taxing the 13 colonies which led to the Am-rev. France's aid incurred debts ion itself, and theat helped spark the french revolution, Napoleon, and all that jazz. the experiance in turn pushed Germany and Italy towards unification, and the collapse of spanish control in the war due to occupation caused the control of its colonies in south America to go downhill. meanwhile the spirit of independance from the Am-rev in the US actually ignited the Slavery issue as early as 1787, which helped fuel sectionalism and the civil war, which caused some Irish to form a brigade, that scared the canadians and convince the British to form the Dominion of Canada, to help in self defence, ut also bowing down to pressure from canadians wanting independance before the civil war......
and it goes on and on..you should see what happened in Asia...
the point is that all history is interelated. nothing is really insignificant. even a war that appears to change nothing actually can change alot.

Here's a better question: could Burebista of the Getae have stopped the Romans dead in their tracks, had war broken out between him and Julius Caesar?
Dacia at the height of its power (under Burebista):
http://www.gk.ro/sarmizegetusa/regii/burebista_1.jpg
At the time Burebista had subdued all of his neighbors, and was on good terms with the Sarmatians.
1) Acornion of Dionysios writes that: "the city of Dyonisopolis' existence depended on the good will of Burebista" which shows that he had established a strong centralized state, where his commands from Argedava (his capital) would pratically be law.
2) Strabo implies the Getai, now united under Burebista's banner, no longer feared the Romans, writing "they crossed the danube without care, raiding from Thrace to Macedonia and Illyria."
3) Strabo also confirms that his army was the size of 200,000 men; a number which though huge, is quite possible given the size of his kingdom and the numbers of the Thracians as affirmed by other writers.
4) The Romans had become seriously worried by his growing strength, and Caesar planned an expedition against Burebista in 44 BC, shortly before his assassination. Incidentally, possibly because the Tarabostes no longer feared the Romans after Caesar's death, Burebista appears to have been assassinated in the same year, and his kingdom divided up among the tarabostes. However, this is not to say Burebista was unable to maintain a consolidated kingdom, since he held his borders at their greatest extent for 11 years (until his death).
I mean, if Decebal managed to resist the Romans with 14,000 men and a much smaller kingdom against a much more powerful Rome, would it have been possible for Burebista to drive the Romans off the Balkan penninsula?
Hooahguy
05-06-2008, 15:36
hey everybody! im halfway done with my movie for the movie contest!
Well, Burebista did raid the Balkans after the Pompey gamble failed, but he didn't pursue permanent conquest. So, yes, I think it would have been possible to drive the Romans back accross the Alps and into Asia Minor, though Im not sure if it would have lasted.

I'm not sure if I can agree on this. Although the Getai had at that time all the advantages the Gauls didn't (Burebista centralized the state, they had a relative strong army, with strong allies, they were prepared for war as it seems - Burabista made a deal wich implied military aid with Pompey before Pharsalus) I don't think they could have resisted the roman army at it's best. But Caesar was assassinate. If he lived, I think his next target would've been Dacia.
We don't know much about the Getai tactics on the battlefield. If you say that it could be possible for them to drive the romans from the Balkan peninsula this involves a conquest of Greece. What do we know about their siege weapons. A city in Greece it's not the same with one in Pannonia or a dalmatian city. Also the Getai made many enemies through their wars in the west and NW. Bah, this involves too many things we don't have any knowledge or control over, and they make this discussion very relative.
I would say that Burebista represent for sure the apogee of the Geto-Dacian kingdom, but I also think that Caesar's, and even more Augustus' reign, represent the apogee of the roman military.
Some other sources talk about a deal of the Getai with Parthia and even some of the German tribes (like Suevi for example) in order to make an attack on Rome at the same time (it could be pure fantasy and I don't remember the exact source atm). All I can say is that it's a shame the sources are so few and we can't make a more objective picture of this area in this period of time.
As for Decebal, 14000 it's a very small number for his army. I think a more realistic figure would be 30000 or even 60000. During the two wars against the Getai, the Roman mobilised the most vast number of forces during their entire history. I mean Trajan came with 13 or 14 legions for only 14000 barbarians? Indeed his army was smaller than the roman's, but still, this gives us a balance of 10 to 1 against Decebal wich seems an exaggeration to me.
So... what do we talk about again? Burebista or Decebal? Or in what order? We could make a tread you know?
P.S: GL with the video contest Hooah!
You can also tell by the amount of money the financiers of the war made.
No one made money during the Seven Years War. Everyone in each country involved was poorer afterwards. And Britain was very badly hit because almost all war material was made by state run factories--their attempts to pay off their debts is what triggered the American Revolution, which wasn't a revolution at all.

I meant the 2 world wars, but for the past few hundred years, someone always had something to gain from a war, I'm talking about banks or other private corporations that loaned both sides the money for weaponry, heavily indebting the all states involved. WWI and WWII were by far the most profitable.

Alright: were women hotter back then than they are now? Let's list the pros and cons of women back then compared to now.
Positive:
+Less fatty food. Most likely a lot healthier.
+excercised a fair bit, so once again, a lot healthier.
+Since many didn't wash their faces with soap etc. they probably had less acne. A lot of oil we get on our faces is ironically, caused by the soap washing some off. More piles on in hope that you won't be able to wash it all off next time.
+You probably married early, so none of those middle-aged, wrinkled hags.
Negative:
-Poor dentistry.
-Marriage was more the result of family interactions than love, so chances for arranged marriages are higher.
-Worse posture, more likely to have had some deformity due to disease.
-Pretty good chance she would die in childbirth.
-Hormones in food give modern women greater, err, assets... :sweatdrop:
Neutral:
:They were shorter back then.

New version, new tavern, new members? A bit intimidating to make a comeback. But anyways, just checking the mood. I might join in with you guys a bit later in the month. Haven't played EB for four months at least, so I'm anxious to try out the new V.

Finally! I´m about to start up EB for the first time in a week, I could barely survive without it, even though America was nice. Read something funny this morning though, apparently McCain can run for President depsite being born on a U.S. Naval base in Panama, since it´s American territory. The famous U.S. Naval Base on Cuba however, is still not.
I wonder how one decides which Naval Bases are actually US territory, one would think all or non would be, but apparently not.

Welcome back Appo!
How was your stay?
Well, it was nice enough I guess. Saw some nice things, met some nice poeple, did some nice things. Yes, I think the word nice sums it up pretty good. Though to be honest, just as I hoped, not one of my many (and I mean many, like KKK vs blacks, Hitler vs Jews and Greeks vs Gauls many) prejudices about America and it´s inhabitants was proven false. Of course, not many were proven correct either, but I had really expected at least some to be wrong. Oh well, I guess that means they´re all correct.

A Devil Always With The Details
Is it American territory or an American Territory? If what you read, and I'm assuming, was in a news paper, the reason given was incorrect. If it was an American news paper, which I assume because it was incorrect, by now you may have come to the conclusion that, for the most part, US news papers are not a very good source of information. But then again, maybe you read it as a blog, which is the best place you can go to get good info? Well, at any rate, a blog is far better than a US news paper, for the most part, often, maybe, possibly in some cases? For, in fact neither the Canal Zone in Panama nor Guantanamo Bay in Cuba are US Territories. What may have confused some morons in the press, is that the Zona del Canal de Panamá is indeed a territory, its just not a US Territory.
These are the current US Territories: Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Minor Outlying Islands, Baker Island, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Midway Islands, Wake Island, Palmyra Atoll, Kingman Reef, Navassa Island, Serranilla Bank, and Bajo Nuevo Bank.
The Canal Zone in Panama and Guantanamo Bay in Cuba are currently considered US Dependent Areas under perpetual lease. They are not US American Territories nor are they American territory in a technical sense, as they are actually territories of Panama and Cuba, under partial or complete US military control (which to us means directly controlled by the US congress, and if the current congress really wanted to change their status it could be done overnight). Still, as far as all children born therein to US service members while serving in Dependent Areas, by law they are provided all rights and privileges of US Citizenship. If one would only have a care to read...

US Code
TITLE 8 CHAPTER 12 SUBCHAPTER III Part I
§ 1401. Nationals and citizens of United States at birth
The following shall be nationals and citizens of the United States at birth:
(a) a person born in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof;
(b) a person born in the United States to a member of an Indian, Eskimo, Aleutian, or other aboriginal tribe: Provided, That the granting of citizenship under this subsection shall not in any manner impair or otherwise affect the right of such person to tribal or other property;
(c) a person born outside of the United States and its outlying possessions of parents both of whom are citizens of the United States and one of whom has had a residence in the United States or one of its outlying possessions, prior to the birth of such person;
(d) a person born outside of the United States and its outlying possessions of parents one of whom is a citizen of the United States who has been physically present in the United States or one of its outlying possessions for a continuous period of one year prior to the birth of such person, and the other of whom is a national, but not a citizen of the United States;
(e) a person born in an outlying possession of the United States of parents one of whom is a citizen of the United States who has been physically present in the United States or one of its outlying possessions for a continuous period of one year at any time prior to the birth of such person;
(f) a person of unknown parentage found in the United States while under the age of five years, until shown, prior to his attaining the age of twenty-one years, not to have been born in the United States;
(g) a person born outside the geographical limits of the United States and its outlying possessions of parents one of whom is an alien, and the other a citizen of the United States who, prior to the birth of such person, was physically present in the United States or its outlying possessions for a period or periods totaling not less than five years, at least two of which were after attaining the age of fourteen years: Provided, That any periods of honorable service in the Armed Forces of the United States, or periods of employment with the United States Government or with an international organization as that term is defined in section 288 of title 22 by such citizen parent, or any periods during which such citizen parent is physically present abroad as the dependent unmarried son or daughter and a member of the household of a person
(A) honorably serving with the Armed Forces of the United States, or
(B) employed by the United States Government or an international organization as defined in section 288 of title 22, may be included in order to satisfy the physical-presence requirement of this paragraph. This proviso shall be applicable to persons born on or after December 24, 1952, to the same extent as if it had become effective in its present form on that date; and
(h) a person born before noon (Eastern Standard Time) May 24, 1934, outside the limits and jurisdiction of the United States of an alien father and a mother who is a citizen of the United States who, prior to the birth of such person, had resided in the United States.

Thus, what you read, as well as the US State Department FAM 1116.1-4 Not Included in the Meaning of "In the United States" (TL:CON-64;11-30-95), on which the article was possibly based, are more of the same smoke up someones backside while flashing them a mirror. Very... interesting. I don´t remember if the article (in Washington Post) said that it was an American Territory, just that it had been concluded that McCain was born on american territory in the Naval Base in Panama, from which one would conclude that this naval base was considered part of the US. The Naval Base at Guantanamo however is not considered part of the US, which is why the American Constitution cannot be applied there, which caused writer of the article to become somewhat upset.
Of course, reading that part of the US Code would suggest that it wouldn´t matter if McCain was born inside the Canadian embassy in Belarus, as both his parents were American.
Anyway, Wikipedia claims that when McCain was born Panama Canal Zone was still under American control, and says this about citizenship to persons born inside it:
"Almost from the inception of the Canal Zone, questions arose as to whether the Zone was considered part of the United States for constitutional purposes, or, in the phrase of the day, whether the Constitution followed the flag. On July 28, 1904, Controller of the Treasury Robert Tracewell stated, ""While the general spirit and purpose of the Constitution is applicable to the zone, that domain is not a part of the United States within the full meaning of the Constitution and laws of the country.""[4] In 1953, Congress passed legislation to specify the status of Americans born in the Canal Zone--and to exclude non-Americans born there from citizenship. Title 8, Section 1403 of the United States Code grants citizenship to those born in the Canal Zone with at least one parent who is a United States citizen. This differs from the provision in the Fourteenth Amendment which grants citizenship to all born in the United States, regardless of parental nationality."
Incredible that we´re having this long discussion about such trivial matters, is it not?
Indirectly, I've had a few dealings with McCain's staff. Because of this, I can't say I have a favorable opinion of them or him. What I can say is if he knew a little more about the district and state he is supposed to be representing, his aids wouldn't be calling every time some little bull happens to pop up, seemingly out of nowhere.
General Appo, your Italian, right? What is the Italian law concerning citizenship?

Small bulls pop up inexplicably in Arizona? How queer.
Having only seen a small amount about John McCain, I much prefer him to Hillary Clinton. At least he seems to be "about" something (however unpleasant and strange), Clinton seems to be just eager for holding the Presidency for the sake of holding the Presidency. Her only perceivable reasons for being President seem to be:
1. Her husband was President and he wasn't as shit as the current one.
2. "I really really want it!"
I dislike the very sight of her. The grinning witch.

General Appo, your Italian, right? What is the Italian law concerning citizenship?
Italian? Where did you get that from? I´m actually from Sweden, where we have some (I believe) quite liberate laws concerning the granting of citizenship. I don´t have the means to find out about it right now, but I think it´s possible to attain a citizenship after living in Sweden for... maybe 20 years? Maybe 10, I don´t know. I think it´s after 3 years that you get to vote in the communal elections though, or something like that. You get more and more right as time goes on.
As for the American presidency, I (as I mentioned in the old tavern) despise all the candidates, plus the whole American system.
Firstly, the election campaigns are based on big freaking bribes. A big oil company gives a president candidate a shitload of money and in return the candidate favours that company if he/she gets elected as President. How is that not both bribery and abuse of power?
Second the whole electorate thing. How can a state with 500,000 people and one with 900,000 people get the same amount of electors? Are the people in the former state more worthy, is their opinion more important?
Thirdly the Disctrict of Columbia. 600,000 people in the capital of the nation that are completely cut of from both basic human rights and the nations laws and constitution. They have only a non-voting represent in the Congress, and nobody on the Senate.
Fourthly, the entire President thing is un-democratic. Firstly it brings to much focus on personality rather then actual political opinions, which should be what matters. It´s all to much "Hey, he looks reliable, let´s vote for him" instead of "Hey, his economic plan to get the economy on tracks really looks like it could work, let´s vote for him". Of course nearly all nations are partially guilty of this, but America even more. Secondly the whole veto thing. A bad President could block everything, everything what so ever. One man should not have that kind of power, especially not considering what kind of nutheads the Americans usually elect.
Fifthly the whole Supreme Court. That a bunch of people not in anyway elected by the people should have an incredibly powerful position for life is just ridiculous, especially considering what nutheads usually gets to sit in the Court.
I could go on and on, but I see no reason to. Finally, let me just say that if I were an American I would vote for Obama. Mainly becasue a strongly disagree with the Republican party on almost everything and becasue Clinton does indeed seem more interested in short-term good PR solutions then true possibly hurtful ones. I don´t want Obama as President for the mighties nation on earth, but I want him more then the other two.
Man this got big. Apologies.
Sweden?
Right,
I think the reason that citizenship has long been a big deal in the US is because...
...depending on the flow, or often flood, of new comers, the economic worth of the individual is questioned. In turn, the worth of the individual is about the only freedom that real counts for anything; Economic Freedom or Freedom from Want. All other Freedoms are worthless without Freedom from Want and the number of citizens and non-citizens has a direct impact on this. As you may have noticed, most elites don't understand this concept, as most people live simply to serve or provide their every want or need.

"Freedom from want"? Philosophically speaking, there is no such thing. For a government to attempt to achieve it is folly. For an individual to think it is possible is a delusion.
I clearly don't understand the concept, cmacq, and I'm far from an "elite". I payed my way through a 3rd rate university on loans and 60 hour work weeks and my parents combined make less than $50k a year.
Everything must be worked for. It will not fall into your lap for free. "Freedom from want" can only be approached by hard work by individuals.
Sorry, I don't speak Philosophically.
This is not about work, rather its about worth.
But tell me if you can, why did you go to school? Maybe to increase your worth?
Sorry, I don't speak Philosophically.
"Freedom from want" can only exist in the philosophic sense.
But tell me if you can, why are you in school right now?
I'm not. I have graduated. I am auditing to keep my skills up.
I am applying to graduate schools because you can't do anything with a BA in History or a BA in English.
Sorry again, I edited on you, before I saw your reply.
But I see your answer was anticipated.
Dhampir's right you know..that said, one could still help the poor help themselves:beam:
but the US government's on something, and I must have it..
@general Appo: tragically, you're right. But the bribes are actually controlled (in theory:inquisitive: ) no more than 2400 from any man. that said, I really agree on the fact that this is a personality contest, and something must be done about it. problem is that:
1-voter turnout is very low-hopelessly so (50-60 % going by VEP, 45-52% going by VAP). In sweden if I recall its around 80% and over, and Australia is even higher. that's because the 2 part systm to be honest limits choices (yes I know about the others, but they're hopeless)
2-most of those who don't vote think they don't matter. blatent BS.
3-I got to have whatever most of those who vote in primaries are having. they are typically party extremists (especially in the caucus' here)
also, I think you exaggerated the electoral process' inequalities. True, I admit that the way its done is messed up, but her's how it works:
1-there are, by default, 2 electors a state (based on senate representation.)
2-then there are a minimum of 1 reps per 300,000 poeple (smallest is around 500000= 2 reps). the toatal of reps+senators is the amount a state gets in an electoral college. Origionally, they were the only ones who voted (popular vote is from 1824 onwards). In other wordss, The USA was not origionally a democracy per se (the founding fathers were mostly against the idea of such a thing). and all this would be fine and good, if it were't for the freezing of the houses' number at 435 reps in the years 1925-1935 (this meant the if a state grew too slow, it loses reps). that's why there are inequalities. tht's also why a state like Ohio, which has 11 million poeple, is overepresented compared to say pennsylvania, or massachusetts has 10, while Washington state has 9, even though Washington has more poeple.well, this was too long as well, but here are my sloutions:
1-disband the party system: that should do it. less on popularity/ party BS, more on issues
Thirdly the Disctrict of Columbia. 600,000 people in the capital of the nation that are completely cut of from both basic human rights and the nations laws and constitution. They have only a non-voting represent in the Congress, and nobody on the Senate.
The city was not founded with the intention of any people becoming permanent residents. The intent was that it would be a seat of government removed from the mob, where representatives would go for their business and then go home. It would prevent both riots and protests from consuming the government and to force politicians to live "beyond the beltway", in modern parlance. Everyday workers were intended to live in nearby towns like Arlington.
I very much like the idea of forcing politicians to live "beyond the beltway". Any more than a 2 year term in the House and the politician goes native and resents the voters who want politicians to do their job.
Second the whole electorate thing. How can a state with 500,000 people and one with 900,000 people get the same amount of electors? Are the people in the former state more worthy, is their opinion more important?
In a country the size and scope of the US, if the popular vote were all that were counted campaigns would only speak to the coasts, where the highest concentration of population are.
With the electoral college, even an issue important to North Dakota has to be addressed by a Presidential candidate.
Without it, New York, Florida and California would control the agenda of the White House.
Edit- When the system was set up, the numbers in your example would be more like 900,000 (New York or Virginia individually) and 10,000 (any one else individually).
russia almighty
05-10-2008, 04:21
Dhampir, so many Europeans and countries in general with tiny populations don't understand that. We have the third highest population in the world; standard electoral systems aren't possible without pissing off a huge section of the population.
Notice, big states are still very important to the presidential race.
Though, I wish the electoral college worked, so if one candidate got the popular vote in a state, the electoral votes go to that candidate. It'd please everyone; popular vote becomes very important, and it forces candidates to go everywhere.
Though, I wish there still was speeches from the back of rail cars :(
Hell,
I wished that whomever wins the popular vote in a given state, that candidate would only get two electorals. That might keep the B-tards on their toes?
