Teams walking out now, so I trust I'm not too late.

Matchday 11 Predictions

France 2-1 Italy (2045)

[So tempted to go for a 1-1 draw, but I think France have enough quality to beat the Italians yet again.
Italy should shake up their attack; they looked utterly inept up front, delivering useless crosses to Toni.
However, I think France will prevail.]

Netherlands 0-1 Romania (2045)

[Momentum aside, and nine Dutch changes made. Put that together with a defence that a good
Netherlands qualifying side failed to break down, and Romania can nick it.]

Geoffrey S

I'm hoping for the Dutch to go 5-0 up just to show that they can, then in the last fifteen to all go home. Stuff the Italians and French.

:bow:Yup. Of course the Romanians played like wet concrete tonight - not a stimulus for a great game anyhow. But apart from that the Dutch looked a bit stiff and jerky, I thought. Except for Afellay who is my favourite among the young-uns. In case you didn't look close enough, Afellay orchestrated the entire Dutch game tonight. And it wasn't his fault that Van Persie and Robben wasted five or six fine chances between the two of them. Oh well, 2:0 is good enough.

Not good enough for my prediction though.. :help:

Adrian: I agree with you that Afellay is a very exicting player to watch, was disappointed by Huntelaar though (got up at 4.30am to watch the game... and was disappointed by Romania for the record).

France lost the game as soon as they picked Abidal... what a clown...

Coupet seems to have had a suprising good game in goal, and from what I've seen France didn't play all that badly.

Predictions:

Spain B 1 - 0 Greece

Greece are just having one of theose tournaments, the goal that Russia scored was a joke. Spain should win... just.

Russia 2 - 2 Sweden

I'm going to go with an exicting draw, here hoping (I'm planning on getting up early again). While Pavlychenko (I think thats how you spell it) was unconvincing for me (played well but can't seem to finish), Andriy Arshavin is now eligible for selection, and he is incredible. He'll lift the Russians. On the Swedish side, I'm not sure if Zlatan 'I am God' Ibrahimovic is fit. If he is he should be good for at least one. If not... I'm stuffed.

Tamur

A terrible sequence of events out of their control did for France last night. As soon as Ribéry went off I
knew the game was up. As for tonight's matches...

Matchday 12 Predictions

Greece 0-2 Spain (2045)

[The Spanish are already panicking about Italy - glee over Pirlo and Gnasher aside - as they tend to
do, so I feel they will go all out to try and maintain momentum. Greece have simply been a resounding
disappointment.]

Russia 2-1 Sweden 'Sure Bet' (2045)

[That's right, lads! The impossible game to call, and I will call it, despite all sense dictating I should
sit comfortably on the fence. Why will Russia win? Andrei Arshavin*. He is the creative lifeblood of that
team, and he has just returned from the Andorra suspension, boosting morale ... and ensuring that
Russia will now bottle it and get tanked. No, no. They will win. Sweden have failed to impress me, and
while history says they might well be favourites to qualify for yet another knockout stage, I say
no. Win it for me, Andrei, I need the points!]

*{I am aware that Hiddink has said Arshavin may not play due to lack of 'match fitnesx.' However it would be madness to leave him out.
If he does not play, feel free to add -50,000 points to my score just to aid my implosion due to unparalleled frustration.}

Adrian: I agree with you that Afellay is a very exicting player to watch Wouldn't you say? Yeah, he has huge potential. The point with the little geezer is you never know what he'll do. He is not yet beefed-out and sturdy enough to win duels, although he can if he puts his mind to it. But he's constantly looking around when he's playing, always thinking of some surprise move. A subtle pass to a striker; a high ball to the other side of the field that breaks open the opponent's defense; a little fake attack followed by a relaxed pass back to his own defense, leaving the opposition on the wrong foot. He just never does what you would expect.

Halftime. I love my Russians. What a pleasant surprise. And they play Dutch football, too: left, right, and through the middle - never a dull moment. Only thing Hiddink has to teach them is to change gears from a fast pace to a slow one (control) and back to fast when you see an opening. But maybe that just doesn't suit this Russian team. Anyway, great game to look at.

I'm almost pleased that sweden went. Perhaps now my country's team will sack Lagerbäck and get someone who values and emphesizes real football. As was brilliantly illustrated by the russian team the key is to have a good offence. Defence is a requirement yes, but that wont put the ball in the other goal, and to base the entire game startegy on it is just plain shameful. Out with the old and in with the new, and with luck I will never have to once again hear how the national football team got ready for a match by drinking tea and eating cookies.

As for what went wrong with this match, I shouldn't even have to state the obvious. Considering the hype in sweden regarding this team this is truly a good wake up call. That ridiculous commercial with lagerbäck in Gladiator only shows that they have no focus on the challenge up ahead. All the best to Russia, a good team which understands the key to victory even though they'll most likely get beat by the invinsible Holland.

Zenit provides the quality. Yeah I was wondering about that all tournament. I followed Zeniths brilliant performances earlier, and was wondering what became of all those players. Those Russian names don't stick in my mind, so I was never sure whether Hiddink was playing them or not. Until I saw Russia play tonight. What a delight! :2thumbsup:

Hiddink - Holland...hmmm. Should be good. Spain will collapse against Italy. Not a chance. Part of the reason why Spain always bottles tournaments is their mental inability to beat their fierce rivals France or Italy. They haven't won from Italy since before WWII. And have never won from France at all. Something in their minds about these games. An inferiority complex maybe?

Portugal I think will reach the final. Turkey - Croatia can go either way, could be a real winner, this game. :2thumbsup:

Tonight's game presents me with more problems. Both sides are countries for which I have a healthy,
footballing derision, say. The Portuguese should win, we all know that [and how painful that would be]
but we're talking about Germany. The forces of darkness. They will raise their game, because there is
no alternative for Germany outside group stages of a major tournament. The Portuguese are far from
invincible, and the Germans have clear defensive and attacking weaknesses. No Frings, either. Argh.

[Part of me still wants to see a Portugal - Netherlands final, but in calling this game in favour of the
Portuguese, I'm denying the possibility that the Germans might be felled by the Dutch in the most

I am afraid, my lady, that said Mr Schweinsteiger is unchained, as it were.

Cry 'Havoc!’, and let slip the Germans of war.

What a half! Schweinsteiger and Klose, magnificent! Lehman, playing well in between the pipes. And Ballack! He's actually playing football! Amazing.

I only hope our luck stands up...

Congrats to Germany!

No doubt they were the better side in the pitch. Like i have said before Portuguese side is too young and unexperienced for favourites at least compared to 2004 and 2006.
Tactically German game was perfect and we made terrible defensive mistakes. Only Deco manage to play at a high level. Both teams had several opportunities to scores but they score 3 and we just 2, so i think it was totally deserved...

They are favourites now, like Holland and Italy (yes...they are back...:smash:) and maybe Croatia...:beam:

Somehow I suspect they'll still find a way to go out on penalties. Wouldn't be a big football tournament otherwise.

Actually, I must say it's been a blessed relief that thanks to England not being there, the Euros have been such a low-key event. Means that it doesn't need to dominate every inch of the media for months in advance and means the coverage actually pays attention to the other games rather than interrupting Netherlands-France to give us updates on Wayne Rooney's foot.

Anyway, tomorrow's match:

Betting against the Germans is usually done for good reasons but always turns out to be a stupid idea, note for the next round....I've been thinking too where I went wrong in my prediction (2:1 for Portugal).

I was thinking that at least Schweini would be good for one goal, provided Germany got its act together. But of course if they get their act together, they have five other fine players who can easily do the same.

Turns out they did get it together. The good old German game: no flicks, no frills, just straight, fast passing and lots of physical contact. The combination preceding that first goal was a classic German beauty.

Predicting gets hairier and hairier these days. Not unlike a certain small bear.

Well, obviously this tournament has proved itself to be a WTFying one. I can remember a dead asleep Germany few days ago who just trashed Portugal. Just never forget that these teams are tournament teams, fyi.

We've made it off the most fearsome team in the group (Czechs that is). Their style of play was the most dangerous for our team and it proved to be. "By heart" kind of play and unpredictable leadership of Arda saved us.

The reason we played like **** generally in all matches was due to the team being quite new to each other and to a tournament. However the latest wins have surely boosted the morale and confidence. We are a nation, hence a team of emotional intensivity and we now have what we need to push it.

The boys will be playing with the reality in mind that they are the only team to turn a match around, so conceding one or two goals won't break them down. The most experienced and self-confident players of the team have succeeded to score/assist so you'll be seeing more of them.

And Croatian defense is no big deal. Cech was was overwhelmed, Pletikosa shall suffer.

Turkey are not the underdogs tonight.

Contrary to an above space cadet's beliefs, Toikey are underdogs tonight. Rakitic could, if fit enough to

likes of Klasnic coming off the bench could provide the kind of clinical impact that the Czechs sorely

Yeah, I'd even go as far as to say that Deco's lack of creativity this match resulted in the German win. Seriously, the only thing Simao, Meireles and Ronaldo were doing in the second half was shooting from way too far out. The occaissional shot is fine, but hoping for a miracle goal when you're down 2 - 0 is not the way to go about the match. You never see the Portugese do this, but it was seemingly necessary because of the lack of ...creativity from the midfielders. I would have thought the static German defenders would have their hands full on the fast and nimble Portugese strikers and attacking midfielders, but that didn't seem to be the case at all.

And by the way, Prole, Turkey's facing Croatia - not the Czech Republic.

The German defenders and the team in general were far from static and thats why they've won. After that devasting goal I just knew Croatia would bottle their penalties...

Sensational game again - we are getting our money's worth in these quarter-finals! But yes, you'll need to fast-forward to the 115th minute, Drone. Both teams were a bit scared throughout the game, they had too much respect for each other.
I think Turkey just doesn't know what to do really unless they are behind. They need free minds. Just a one, single, all-encompassing need to drive forward and score. When all other considerations are off and sheer passion is all that counts.

That was definitely what Germans would call a "Gürkespiel" or something like that. No goals until the very end? Granted Turkey's was brilliant, they scored just when they needed to, and then they dominated the shootout. I'm really glad Germany will be facing the Turks minus 3 players. Though I'd feel a bit better if Turkey weren't so dangerous in the closing seconds. I haven't participated in the betting up until now since I really don't know the clubs that well, but I'll wager Germany beats Turkey if they play at all like they did against Portugal.

It's in the 84th minute on my end.

Croatia seems to have slowed down a lot and has squandered a couple of good scoring oportunities.

Nice save by the Turkish keeper on the free kick in the 84th minute.

LeftEyeNine
06-21-2008, 00:13
Arda Turan picks the ball, it's 90+2, dribbles gently to see the goal, strikes it, deflected ball reaches somewhere unreachable.

It's 75th minute, you're playing against the best keeper of the world while you're 2 goals behind. Arda makes the only shot possible from that angle. A cross swivels in, Cech can't grasp it, Nihat is there so score. While the score is already good to go, Arda waves over keeper Volkan to kick the ball quickly as if there is more to it. Yes, there was. Nihat makes the most confident last ditch shot available which kisses the upright first and sends the kiss goodbye to the Czechs.

It's 119th minute against the Croatians, when Rüştü, who has performed his best up to that point, makes an irrelevant rush out, and Klasnic puts the well put lobbed ball into the net. Hell it maybe the last minute that the rivals are on the lead but there is Semih, the igniter of the Swiss victory, shoots a ball headed down by Emre Aşık, the centre back, and the ball follows the same route as Arda's Swiss winner after getting deflected, giving a good run to Slaven Bilic the rock-star-on-the-pitch, towards the ref this time. Penalty shootout was already decided. Croats were shattered with anxiety while our boys were happy and smiling.

Come on, screw the winner on 29th. "The winner" already is there. I've lost my senses.

Believing is winning.

Match Day 15

Netherlands 3-1 Russia

Could go either way this game, I think it may depend strongly on who scores the first goal, if Russia get a good start they could well cause an upset, but otherwise if Netherlands can keep up their group stage form they should have enough to win it.

Match Day 16

Spain 2-0 Italy

Spain have slumped somewhat since the first game but I'm going to commit the cardinal sin of football predictions and bet upon them doing well in the knockouts. No seriously, the dutch have to win the cup this time, doesn't matter who they crush on the way.Actually I think the Russians deserve it. For sheer character and sheer talent. And because it would be a great stimulus for Russian football. Ten years from now, when the Russian competition will have really taken off, Russia will be a major force in European and world football.

Think of the possibilities. Russians are very tactical players, team players par excellence. Their ice hockey players are, their basketball players are. I think this is because chess is their national passtime. I would love to see them play the technical masters, Brazil.

I can see it.

Six years from now: a Russia-Brazil WC final. Hm hmmm hm-hm hmmm... :2thumbsup:

Quarter Final #3
Netherlands # - # Russia

Still deciding, it could go either way. Russia can really threaten with Arsharvin, but Pavlyuchenko's finishing is poor. The game will be won in the wide areas. Both teams have fast and talented full-backs, who can provide that attacking spark. The Netherlands have the ability to pose a threat anywhere on the park, and upfront their striker's are a bit more clinical, more likely to be composed in the final third. I'm sure the Dutch will win, but what the final score will be, I really don't know.

Gah! Hiddink's luck is legendary. And he is tactically gifted enough to destroy the Dutch team at their weakness: Orange relies on tactical discipline at back, plus a God in goal. Will they cope with another team that's as sharp on the counter attack as they themselves? Dutch have been great though, and have the more talented squad up front.

Teams need momentum. It is beter to start rubbish in a tournament and then work your way up from there. Both theams that easily won their groups lost in the quarters from teams with the right momentum. Will the Russki's repeat the feat?

More a minute to minute thing with the dutch team, that's why I compare it to manic depression, it can reach the sky but the smallest thing can be the trigger that leads to the fallback. Like a bubble that bursts the dutch team can be beaten. That's Total Football for you: careful manipulation of space + players constantly trading places for tactical purposes. This requires a good relationship between team members and confidence in each other's insight and stamina. Lose one screw or bolt from the machine and the team is done for.

Not tonight though. Today's hamster entrails had victory written all over them.

scotchedpommes
06-21-2008, 19:41
Still unsure about this one. Will the Dutch have lost momentum by fielding reserves in the final group
game? I'm inclined to think not. The Russians, as has been demonstrated, are capable of playing football
any classic Dutch side would be proud of when Arshavin drives the team. But inexperience could
cost them. Both sides thrive when playing a counter-attacking game, so this has the potential to be
very open from the off, or cagey with both sides looking too keen to guard against being torn apart.

Argh. We haven't seen how the Dutch cope with going a goal down, and that is the only real seed of
doubt. I think the Russians might nick this game if they press hard from the kick-off and get the first
goal, but I can't back them.

Tomorrow:

Italy - Spain 2-1

Spain doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell. They can't beat their Latin rivals owing to mental inhibitions. Plus the Ritals are right back in it, and lest Hiddink destroys them, will go on to win the tournament.
I predict that Torres will go off with a horrible injury after just seven minutes. Then a few minutes later that 150 kilogram ox Luca Toni will come crashing down on the pitch after the slightests of touches, will receive a penalty, and reduce Spain to ten men and needing two goals to progress.
