I want points for my prediction!
And you shall. Andrei Arshavin looked like his from another planet, surely some of the top clubs in Europe will be interested in him now.
Italy got the winning mentality, on a scale of winning mentality Italy would have 9 while Spain with 5, but without Pirlo and Gattuso the result would be less obvious.

Hence 88 years of hurt. [Nevermind inability to progress beyond quarter-finals.] They may well fight

But the rest of the Spanish team is going to be mesmerized. They're going to be wiped away by Italian brutality and genius, and end up mentally crushed again, even if that is not reflected in the numbers because the Italian strikers either suck or AWOL. If they had more than just the Iniesta/Villa (trigger/bullet) couple to bring the pasta's to their knees, they might actually win. But they don't.
Anyway, I didn't predict yesterday's outcome by a long stretch either - so who knows.
Great tournament.
Russia played great. One thing I'd really like to see though is them staying on their feet. All their diving was driving me absolutely bollox. MAN-UP!

Italy doesn't look so strong this year. I still think they'll progress but without the creativity of Pirlo, and that bulldog Gattuso could be a blow, their back-four had not impressed me at all this year. Toni had a rubbish tournament so far despite his superb season with Bayern, although Buffon had been brilliant as always.
The tournament had a slow start but gradually picked up, quite opposite of the last world cup when it was an explosive start. The Dutch looked great, and the Turks had been delightful with their stuff. Lots of upsets so far, maybe we could see more that later.

Quarter-final Prediction 4
Spain 1-2 Italy (2045)
[The feeling in my bones says a scrappy one-nil to the Italians, but I think Adrian is right - Villa should
score. That leads me towards 1-2, with the prospect of predictably early Spanish hope being snatched
away at the death. In all honesty, I hope the scoreline is reversed, preferably with Panucci scoring an
injury time own-goal. I want to see that man cry. Pirlo doesn't cut it at international level, for me, so I
think the Italians will survive with the replacements on offer. Gnasher out is good, of course, though I
just hope he doesn't come to disrupt Arshussia too much. The Italian defence has been poor, but Spain
won't kill it off.]

That was a match only to be solved through penalties. And so it did. It was the same TV angle as Baggio had missed in WC '94 final, and mediocre penalty kicks were absorbed by one of the world class keepers on the pitch, Casillas.
Considering the fact that Spain are technically the better team, their qualification seems more favorable for the taste of the rest of the tournament.

Four games, three goals, one of which a penalty and one a deflected free kick. Crap. I've seen more technical skill and refinement in an English penalty shootout than in four games of this sorry lot. Can't believe some teams are incompetent enough to lose from this travesty of a football team. :wall:

If we get raped on Wednesday (starting from scores such as 3-0 and on), just applaud a team of wonders for their wonderful magic up to that point and send them home.
We have NO centrebacks left. Either Hakan Balta (DL) or Mehmet Topal (DMC) will play along with Gökhan Zan. No Arda, no Tuncay, no Nihat, we don't have ones to drive the game paced with pure determination. Emre's injury will keep him off too.
I really wanted Germany for rivals; Portugal would be worse indeed. However foreseeing our Mission Impossible with such a broken squad, I'm not daydreaming here. If "X factor" was with us upto now, we need "X factor squared" this time.

Well, that was frigging boring. I don't really mind Italy getting bounced, since going in to this I was rooting for Portugal, Spain and Italy all to varying degrees. But that game was a total yawnfest. The Germany game was great, the Russia match was okay but only really got interesting in the last 30 minutes, and this game was like watching paint dry for 120 minutes. I know teams should be more careful in this round but why not play the game that got you here? Hopefully Spain-Russia will be a real shoot out.
:2thumbsup:
The tiny amount of Spanish blood in me is so friggin happy.
I'm also very happy and on that high I'd like to note that I see again and again that a lot of the predictions made before matches are just blabla, pure guesswork bollox. At least in this cup and yes you can include whatever I may have predicted as well.
Now the next step is for Germany to beat Turkey and win the following civil war. *puts more sandbags into the window openings*
Then Spain can crush Russia and we get a Spain Germany final in which the better team shall win in a good and interesting match, else I just hope that Germany will crush Russia in the final. The sad thing is I may miss this due to the ongoing civil war. :sweatdrop:

Gah, so from 360 possible points in the quarter finals, I managed a big fat zero.
The problem with football tournaments IMHO is that the best games almost always occur in the early rounds, when there's less pressure on. The semis and the final are almost always dreary, cagey affairs where neither team is willing to take risks. Great if your team's in the final, not much fun for neutrals.
Anyway, let's see if I can manage any more points at all from this competition:
Semi-Final Predictions:
Germany 1-0 Turkey
Spain 0-0 Russia
Spain to go through on penalties.
I fear Turkey may well run out of steam, while Germany are just getting up to speed. Meanwhile Spain-Russia I expect to be close, but although I fear a piece of magic from Arshevin could well cost me the points, I suspect the teams will be tied after 120 minutes. In the shootout last night I had doubts about some of the Spanish penalty takers, but I suspect Casillas will do his part to win it for Spain.
The italians missed willingess, and a sane strategy. If your strategy is to play draws, well you usually get into problems when you need to win to get trough. They already went too far.
Turkey, when they feel like t they could take on the world. A bit like Figo in his later years, if he only felt like it he could work wonders. (Remember last EK against the dutch, if Figo wasn't taken of the game before, the dutch would have won.) However they really should learn to dare to attack, when they aren't behind yet. They had the quality for this. However with the key players off, and against a solid organised germany (Who can always use Turkey's long games, and their superior size and fitness). I do no not see a brilliant futur for them.
Germany, hasn't won all games at the start however they're solid defence and organisation is the perfect counter to spain. Not to mention that they are great at corners and freekicks, which they'll use against the shorter Turks and Spaniards. I see them as the possible champions. Their counters are deadly too, remember the Sweinsteiger goal? That goal was just undefendable.
Spain, while I could see them beat the weakened turks, they have to face the Russians and perhaps later the Germans. (probably) The russians seem to be really strong since their keyplayer is back. They've got a secret weapon with Guus (their coach) too. Their defense seems organised enough to handle or the spanish, and their attack force is remarkable. The Dutch were lucky to keep a 1-1 untill extra time. Spain-Russians can go either way. However I'd say the Russians will prevail.
They seem to play a bit like the dutch, but more solid. And a little less emphasis on the attack. They appear more balanced out. However the whole play seems to be based on the work of only one man. If this guy goes down, or if he's constatly followed by two men their game might not wrok anymore. I'd see them win against spain. However Germany looks like the bigger man. (pun intended)
even though I don't play the game...
My predictions:
Germany - Turkey: 2 - 0
Spain - Russia: 1 - 2 (possible extra time or penalties though)
And when it comes to the final I'm thinking of Germany. Who'd win against both Russia and Spain as well.

We won't forget referees drawing out yellow cards of punishment on Turkish players to get them suspended where Busacca couldn't dare anything. Neither the Swiss assisstant referee who was so disappointed that he couldn't signal Semih's 2-2 equaliser. So will we remember Busacca who was able to draw yellow cards easily at Semih while Lahm would have been sent of in the very first half if treated equally.
Only that much with idiotic suspensions, injuries and a pile of costly individual mistakes.

Considering the final score and that most of Turkey's main team was missing, I wonder what it would have been like if both teams had their tops in play. On the other hand, would their standard team have been much better than their B team that played rather well tonight (except for having a horrid shot to goal ratio)?
Probably 3:3 or 2:2 and then some interesting game in extra time with a chance of penalties.

He didn't call out Sabri's treatment of Lahm either.
He put his leg in front and his leg was still on the ground, that's no foul while you run into it. And even if it was a foul it was outside the box.
However, it was quite obvious that he tried to "make up for" it. His decisions suddenly changed considerably in favour of the Germans. He was truly effected.
Gah, Germany are going to go and win it aren't they, how can the team which was so resoundingly destroyed by Croatia be in the final again? Ah well, at least it nets me some precious points. Turkey really should be through though, very impressive for a team that most people expected wouldn't make it out of the group stage.

Hah! The Germans out-turked the Turks!
*thinks of the infinite wisdom of Gary Lineker*
Lehman is passed it. The whole of Germany will have to improve for the final if they're to win it. Then again, they are German, so they win anyway. [/jealous]
And come on, LEN, near the end, the Germans were simply less Fatih-gued than the Turks.

I don't remember German team showing much energy either. They were looking around, doing it stop-play. Still it was not their energy that brought this result. Any player would make such run after finding so much space - attack-frenzy they call it.

Yeah, football is not a game of statistics.
I'm still proud of this team playing so positively except for the match against Portugal. After Greek defense (which I still admire) making it to the top 4 years ago, we have proved that attacking counts indeed. It's the best way you can defend.

Spain - Russia 1-0.
Both nations are tournament bottlers, their last win dating back to the prehistory. But they can't both bottle it. So I'll go by the reasoning that in this tournament, as soon as a team wows the world and everybody thinks they'll go all the way, they are sent packing.

Semi-final Prediction 2
Russia 3-1 Spain (2045)
[Spain foiled by their unlucky yellow kit? Nah. Had been set on going 3-0 with this one, but I'll add one
in reply due to at least one exploited defensive blunder. Reason says they should score more, possibly
even steamroll a naïve Russian side, but I think against Italy they showed their inability to adapt
tactically. Since the first game, the Russians have shown their willingness to adjust their system, albeit
around an outstanding playmaker. Their fitness is second to none, and their ability to break well has
already been demonstrated. Kolodin could be a big loss, although he had a terrible game against Spain
before. If Russia press hard, yet again, I think Spain might crumble. And this time, unlike against the
Dutch, I have to back them. Hopefully they'll have been working on their set-piece defending. Oh, and if
nobody is convinced, for every goal scored they have been promised two women. Arshavin thinks it
might just be the extra incentive they need.]

The Russians were K.O. the second half! They had given up and so, consistently, lost.
The Spaniards play great and have all my sympathy, really. But sympathy has to end one day!
Germany 2 - 1 Spain.
Why?
- The Spanish game suits our Mannschaft. We will destroy their game (sorry folks, no prize for beauty here!).
- The Germans won't be as foolish as against the Croats or the Turks, because the Spaniards are favourited. The difficult opponents proved to be the easier opponents, and vice versa.
- Germans will have - this time - the absolute will to success. There's no way of zombiewalking in the final (see above).
- Germans are ice-cold before the goal. OK, Spaniards aren't bad either.
- The Spaniards are under pressure. Everybody expects them to win. They know that if they lose, Catalonians and Madrileños will start to tear each other apart again.
You see, Spain doesn't stand a chance. Disculpad, quizás otra vez... en 2012...

The game changed completely when Fabregas came on, they just opened up more and had more movement and drive. The score would have been a lot higher had Villa not been injured but Torres in his place or Giuza been brought on earlier for Torres. Yeah, that's right, Torres was shocking! He was absolutely :daisy:, missing near open goals and his control,, bollox, he gave the ball away or blundered it so many times in the final third. Guiza showed why he was the highest scorer in La Liga last season. His goal and the build up to it was exquisite, typical Spain. I really hope Aragones starts Torres on the bench, he needs a break, as he can't handle the pressure. Arshavin went completely missing, and Russia spent more time on the turf than on the ball.

Lehmann sure has his days....Yeah, I remember Lehmann being great in the 1976 final.
If we simply look at the Goalkeepers we can pick the winner. :laugh4:
Casillas is a good keeper, Lehman is quite good. But I don't think that it's the goalkeepers who'll make the difference. If Xavi finally has a good day, or other creative minds like Fabregas and Iniesta are thinking outside the box, they might make it. But I think it's going to be German counters, as the spanish will leave space as they push forward, that'll make the decision. And of course they can also make it the French '00 style, as corners and freekicks are their thing too. (Whith guys like Klose who can put thier heads to any ball). Though Guys Like Senna, Fabregas, Xavi Alonso don't need that much luck when they shoot on target from distance.
So am I right in concluding from this thread that there is no 3rd-place playoff?
Anyway, on to the final (where have the other 30 games gone?):
Euro 2008 Final:

It's a shame they don't have the third-place game. Yeah, it's meaningless, but it's usually a lot more entertaining than the actual title game. Both teams can just go out and play, instead of being under pressure and playing to not lose. 4-3 with lots of free-flowing play, as opposed to boring, defensive 0-0 all the way to penalties. The third place WC game is usually a blast.

But hey, all those upsets, all those very temporary enjoyed statuses as new favourites, are what has made this such a fun tournament. Far from feeling silly or humbled, the footy experts/lovers are enthralled and delighted! :beam:
Such a comeback for a sense of romanticism and passion in football!
Compare with other recent tournaments:
- this year's Champion's League - the two richest clubs from the richest league play the final.
- Champion's League in general - it's nowadays a playground for just the richest four from the Premier League, plus the top two, top three and top one from Spain, Italy and Germany respectively.
- national championships - in all major leagues, next year's winners will again be drawn from the same old tired list of four in England, two in Spain, two in Scotland, one in France, one in Germany, one in the Netherlands.
- Last World Cup produced the predictable semi-finalists Germany, Italy, France, Portugal. Perennial favourites Argentinia and Brazil lost these teams in the quarterfinals. Not a lot in the way of surprise.
:snore:
So the European Championships is where it's at for footy lovers! The merciless slaughter of big nations and (temporary) favourites, starting with England in the qualification round and continuing all throughout the tournament, is such a blessing for the sport!
The one thing experts overlooked maybe, is that the EC is a tournament where traditionally a small underdog nation takes the prize, or at least wreaks huge havoc on the favourites. Though it could be argued, that even in this regard, this tournament is a surprise: no upstart's fame proved to be long-lived in this tournament.

4 contenders in England? More like 3, bordering on 2.
Well said Louis.
Given how many times I've predicted boring nil-nil draws and uneventful easy victories for the favourites it's been a delight to have been proved wrong so many times. I'm very glad in particular that I was proven wrong about the semis always being boring and I hope to be wrong once again about the final; at least with one fantastic attacking side against another with occasional flashes of excellence and with at least one highly suspect defense there should be the potential for a fantastic high-scoring final. I just generally tend to bet on the most boring outcome since then having watched 90 minutes of tedium isn't a total waste.

The Premierleague are really domnating now, in the previous decade it was the Italians, but since Liverpool's trumpht in 2005 the big four just looked stronger and stronger.
- national championships - in all major leagues, next year's winners will again be drawn from the same old tired list of four in England, two in Spain, two in Scotland, one in France, one in Germany, one in the Netherlands.
As much as I am a Liverpool fan the Premierleague is far too predicatable, Liverpool have been a disappointment and will not win the league next year unless some major players is signed, same goes for Arsenal. The La Liga had been far more fun but the eventually winner was always gonna be either Barca or Real Madrid. The Scottish league always end in a two horsed race between Celtic and Rangers. The champions in France, Germany and Holland all had been weakened somewhat and I fancy an upset next year in one of the competitations.
Last World Cup produced the predictable semi-finalists Germany, Italy, France, Portugal. Perennial favourites Argentinia and Brazil lost these teams in the quarterfinals. Not a lot in the way of surprise.
The world cup is far too predicatatble when hosted by a European nation, we might see a surprise or two in the next world cup, but the eventually winner will definitely be either Brazil or Argentina, which is the pattern since 1966.

I foresee:
Spain to come up 1-0. Tense second half, in which near the end either Germany will draw level in dramatic fashion, or in which Spain will take it to 2-0. I don't want this tournament to ever end, so I shall root for extra time:
Spain - Germany 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Spain to win in extra time, 3-1 after 120 minutes.

Thoughts on the result have been wavering all day.
Almost tempted to go for the Germans, naturally. Not really fond of either team, but now is just
the time for appreciation of football, and I'm really hoping for a cracking final. That might just
elevate this tournament above Euro 2000 for me yet.
Final Prediction
Germany 1-2 Spain (2045)

Congrats to Little Grizzly, and congrats to Spain. Never thought I'd see the day.
Quintus, I actually predicted 1-0 after 90 minutes, not AET. Obviously doesn't make enough difference to overhaul Grizzly.

Great game you setup Quintus it helped pick up the tournement for me as England weren't in there i thought i wouldn't enjoy it too much, but this game made it more enjoyable.
Spain were great most of the game, Germany had a small spell at the start were they looked decent but after Torres goal they never looked too threatening, spain deserved it and im glad spain got it, nice to see a underachieving side take it.

Oh well. If you one side has the inferior footballers, you have to make it up with heart, running and unbending will. That's why Germany is a much feared team, and that's why Germany did not win this tornament. :whip:
Nevertheless I'm neither sad nor angry, because
1. It's good to lose against Spain, cause afterall they are neither Italia nor Netherlands.
2. It's good to lose against Spain because they were invincible, which avoids us the blamage.
3. It's good to lose against Spain because afterall they normally just do not win.
4. It's good to lose against Spain cause in the tiny village of Mario Gomez's grandfathers they can now wholeheartedly rename a street after him, exactly as it was planned before the Euro.
Congratulations Spain, again a very deserved victory.
Congratulations to Spain! They had the one team in the tournament who deserved the cup most!
Germany was not in good shape that day...and Ithink we should be glad me made it into the final and did not loose smth. like 3:0.....
Anyways....looking 2 years ahead....watch ot for the Spanish....they areyoung & very gifted....maybe double time....Olé.

Congratulations to LittleGrizzly. Deserved winner who led throughout the second half of the campaign. Is there any chance of giving him a badge to honour his triumph? :crown:
Congrats to Spain! :barrel:
Looking back at Torres' goal, am I the only one who thinks Lahm gave up on it, assuming that he had Torres blocked out and Lehmann was going to get to it? It just seems to me like he got lazy. Well done by Torres to keep motoring, blow past him, and flick it over Lehmann's slide.
LittleGrizzly
06-30-2008, 17:18
Torres was the wrong side and they were both sprinting for the ball.... i had always thought off lahm as a fairly fast player, not quite torres pace but he isn't slow, but he just seemed to slow down, it looked like lahms feet were quicking mid air whilst torres took 2 or 3 steps and ran round him.... im sure lahm could have stopped him..

The way I saw it Lahm had to slow down and give up the chase because Lehmann came out of the goal and was trying to dive for the ball. If Lahm had kept going I think he'd have run straight over Lehmann. I think Lahm could have stopped Torres from getting a good shot in if Lehmann had stayed more or less in goal. But hell everyone makes mistakes and if the Germans really wanted to win they needed to score in the remaining hour....

The way I saw it was that Lehmann should have stayed in his net.
There were some pretty stupid calls against Germany by the referee at the end of the game. Spain did play better, but Germany could've tied if not for that bloody stupid foul call at the end. When it should have been a Spanish foul, the ref calls a German foul. :whip:
Oleander Ardens
06-30-2008, 19:29
Well Spain was clearly better, but as a matter of fact the referee did decide in dubio pro Iberia - at least a penalty was due for Germany for a clear hand in the box. Anyway I congratulate the great spanish fans and the players which enjoyed my region, the beautiful Tyrol.

So true, Lehman should have let Lahm handle it and should have covered his goal. No way Torres would have gotten it in from such an angle, had Lehmann stayed put, and without the support of his other teammates.

Ha! That'll teach you!
Germany-Belgium, World Cup 1994, the foul by Thomas Helmer on Josip Weber should have been a penalty and a red card for Helmer. Damn that Swiss referee Röthlisberger. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FM3UKXbhpVk) :soapbox:
A disgrace it was! Gah!
Concerning penalties, Lehman once played with his hand when he shouldn't and the commenter said had the referee seen it that should have been a red card, yes a red card for the goalkeeper, I would have loved to see that. ~D
