View Full Version : How often do you get CTD?

Just wondering how common is it to get CTD? In 2 games, I get tons at around 240-245bc which is why I can never complete a faction. I started a new game as Hayasdan and just got my first CTD at 264bc, I'm scared the same will happen. Even though all my fixes are applied.

Just wondering if this is common or should I be worried?

Since I've installed vers 1.1, which has been about 15 to 20 hours of play, I have had no CTD's. When I used 1.0 I had a CTD on average of every 5 to 6 hours of play.

Hmmm, I hit 260bc with 2 CTD's so far. One after during the loading screen of post-battle, and one towards the end of a battle =-/

Mhh, actually i stop my roman siege of iberia in around 250bc because ever second great battle caused a ctd (after winning - very sad).:tredmil:
now i´m playing as getai, also around 250bc, and i´ve got no ctd since the beginning.
probably the "barbarus flavoir", hehe

I have the same problem too. I get CTDs when battles are over. Every third of fourth battle crashes. So I save games a lot! Do you have any ideas why?

I tended to get one every fifth or sixth battle on the AI turn, every other where I'd won a Heroic Victory. CTDs for other reasons were very rare. I had no more than about 10 in the 550+ turns I played. Of course the game was killed by one in the end at 133BC.

Very rarely. I've come to 197 BC with only one major CTD when trying to conquer Mtskheta. Worked around it though.

I seem to get random CTD's. If I turn on the game after the CTD and do the exact same thing again, it won't occur. Then agian, I ussually just do "auto_win" if I get a CTD after I win a battle.

259BC with 3 CTD's so far. All of them during battle or at the end of it.

Using the tips from bovi (i.e. waiting about 15 seconds after receiving the battle report screen), I haven't got any after-battle CTDs anymore.

Sounds something I should try, atleast 90% av all my CTDs are post-battle.

I haven't played all that much, only about 30 years of a Saka campaign. I got one post-battle CTD then in the first few years, but no more since that one.

I haven't got any CTD's with 1.1

I think it also has to do something with the amount of RAM (?) someone has.

No CTD in 1.1 <knocks on head - erm, wood>
I had 2 in 1.0, both around battles. First was when a Ptoly full stack attacked a badly depleted (2 men left) unit of nubians I had sent ahead as scouts. I guess the program tried to calculate the odds and couldn't count that high.
Other one was post-battle.

Post-battle CTDs or overload-related ones probably do, but they're not a real problem. Sure you may need to redo the battle, but you can use auto_win if you want. Campaign-ending CTDs, on the other hand, are the real problem.

I rarely have had any..

I got 2 gigs of ram so it shouldn't be that.

I'lll try the waiting for 15 seconds after a battle. I ussually wait a few seconds before clicking okay, but I'll see if this helps.

I get CTDs very rarely. They'll usually be post-battle and those are easy to get passed with auto-calc, so I've never really had trouble with CTDs since v0.80.

I got 2 CTD's last night playing SAKA. 1 is when loading the last save game, the 2nd time I load it, it went well. The 2nd one is closing the construction menu of Baktra. (Why???????)

sometimes construction menu closes for me when turns load too. I usually have to click on the turn event news feed on the left and under construction report, click that to open menu. If that made sense.

I was getting many CTDs on my new computer, maybe up to one an hour but usually a reload autosave sorted it out. Then I read (on another game's) tech forum somewhere about the .dll problem with ati cards ativvaxx.dll not found and sure enough used event viewer, applications log to see that it was an error that always coincided with a CTD

Solution sounded very odd to me - reboot and press F8 to boot in VGA mode, turn off AV software, reload Ati drivers, reboot as normal.

Well, it has cut the CTD rate to about once in a couple of night's play. I never had any AV message reporting any fault with that dll and it existed in WIN32 and elsewhere before the 'fix', so I dont understand why this solution has helped .... but it has.

I am now left with only one CTD cause (according to said Event Viewer) which looks like a function call, still working on investigating that one. Oh, and of course the most frustrating one of all that is caused by AI cities rebelling way into a campaign during the AI turn..but thats another story.

I hope this helps someone

Salut!

Not had a single one so far in my new game, at 264BC. The whole "wait 15 seconds after a battle on the AI turn" business worked admirably well to preserve my Heroic Victory recently.

EDIT: 257BC and still no crashes.

i rarely got CTD's and I'm pretty sure it wasn't EB's fault, I got CTD's at the same rate i usually get CTD's (and yes I know, I should reinstall my windows :P )

I have loads of CTD's at the end of a battle or after with the loading screen. I will try the 15 sec thing.
I don't like Autocalc, as the AI will ruin my precious Vet armies.

This is my second PC, both have done it, both had/have ATi cards. The newest PC has 2 gigs of ram!

Are players with Nvidia cards getting the same problems? Also are there players with ATi cards, with no CTD's?

Funny thing is, I find armies get more experience when you autocalc, than running the battles yourself. Possibly for the same reason that casualties are generally spread evenly throughout your army on autocalc.

250BC and I've had two CTDs, but neither during the game. Once on trying to re-load from the main game screen after saving and quitting, and once on trying to quit. Obviously neither had any impact on the game whatsoever, and didn't repeat.

Just got a CTD in the middle of a battle as Hayasdan pushing into Persis =(

They aren't always. Sometimes only a few units engage the enemy, those could be either the first units of the stack, or only the cavalry. If you've ever seen the AI control a reinforcement army, you'll see he rushes the cavalry and the general into the battle. I guess that also happens in some auto_calc battles.

Was going to say that I don't get any CTD's on my new machine, but I was just rewarded with a "nice" CTD after defeating 2000 men Arverni army near Ankira on my KH campaign, while losing only 350out of 1100 men. It didn't even happen immediately after battle as another AI faction was already in the middle of its turn. That was actually only my 1st or 2nd CTD on the new computer (and what a great timing:furious3:).

On the old PC I was getting CTDs quite regularly, but it was P4 with 1Gb of RAM and ATI 9250 video card. EB was rather stressful for that PC. New PC is AMD X2 4800 CPU, 2Gb of RAM and 8800 GT graphics card, so hardware specs are surely not the reason this time.

I am playing a KH game now (very fun) but I am getting CTD's about once every three years, usually while a battle is loading. I did not have many with my Baktria campaign (2-3 in 90 years) and I had no problems at all while playing with SABA or Makedonia. Could these be faction related?

Could any of you kind players post whether you are getting CTDs(or not) around battles, and whether it's an ATi or Nvidia GPU.
I am about to build a new PC, and need to make some sort of informed decision on whether one make of card causes any more CTDs than the other.

I would like to buy the decent value for money ATi HD 4870, but I am not sure if Nvidia cards work better with CAs products?

Thanks for any help.

Arrrgh! Just got a post-battle on AI turn CTD. Fortunately not in a turn with a string of battles, nor a particularly important one. I obviously didn't wait long enough before clicking finish.

2 CTD yesterday. one is

https://img523.imageshack.us/img523/669/81253125wo9.png (https://imageshack.us)

https://img261.imageshack.us/img261/8341/89990077fn4.png (https://imageshack.us)

1st picture is showing the invisible clone army.
2nd picture is showing the existed army which can merge to the invisible clone army.

Then I say to myself, what will happen if I merge them? After I click the mouse, something tell me it will CRASH!!! But it's too late.

But you are the Saka? So cloning also happens in your own faction, actually? Holy crap.

I was getting an alarming number of CTDs, mainly in battles and just at the point where the victory was inevitably mine. I changed the battle resolution down one level to see what happened. No CTDs!!!!! The game is very playable at the lower res - no degradation of quality.

I have version 1.1 I have had more Crashes than a vehicle safety test lab. Alot were after battles, before battles, engaging in subterfuge, ending turns ( due to riots and revolts). But I have also been trying to solve this problem, at first I thought it was because I had total realism installed, so i reinstalled the game, no luck, (also the game is installed to the rome folder (might be problem)), it might be my less than quality graphics card, I also have vista don't know if that is a problem. RAM and processor isn't a problem.

After battle crashes are easy to avoid - wait 10-15 seconds after getting the summary before clicking to finish. Mine have stopped altogether as a result of that.

It's supposed to be a subfolder of the main RTW folder. Nothing wrong there.

Are you using the newest optimised script? I ask because it's relatively untested, and I personally found it seemed to encourage the existing client ruler/FM clone bug.

I deleted the client ruler section from the standard (but fixed) script and I've not had a single repeatable CTD. The odd one here and there for seemingly no reason, but to date I've still had less than 5 and I'm at 225BC in my game.

My computer is as follows:

AMD Athlon 64 4000
2 gigs of PNY Ultima RAM
NVidia (PNY) 6800 GS
ECS KVN1 (Light) Motherboard

I've had 2-3 CTDS (by the way, what does this stand for?) while playing. It was happening when I hit end turn. I tried making different decisions in terms of building structures and moving units, but nothing helped. I rebooted my computer and then hit end turn without enabling the script or issuing any orders. This solved the problem.

My OS image is 2+ years old, and I've installed various Rome mods over the past two years. My OS is stable, but I could use a re-image, but I just hate doing it.
