So I've had EB off the computer for a while but wanted to try 1.1... I can't install RTW, because when I click install, it doesn't install, it tries to uninstall, and simply errors at the end and "rolls back." I know I uninstalled rtw and EB using the control panel, and deleted any left over folders. I've searched the computer thoroughly, no luck, there's no files -- so what's it trying to uninstall? It claims it can't read an .msi, but that msi doesn't even exist. It goes through a long, long uninstall, going through countless files that I'm sure aren't on the computer, which really makes no sense. I can't find anything relevant in the registry either.
So, if the install button tries to uninstall something that's not there, well, i don't know how I can ever install it. I've read other topics here on this, still, no luck. Any advice?
thanks

You are clicking the wrong thing.
EB 1.1 installer is not build using msi and thus doesnt require any msi file to work.

This is how you install EB.

Preparation:
Install RTW, patch it to 1.3 and then 1.5 (If you have gold version you dont need the patches)
Download EB 1.1 (it will be EB1.1_setup.exe file I think)

Installation:
Double click EB install file and fallow instructions.

@LordBula, didnt he say he was having trouble installing Rome rather than EB?

Yeah, it's Rome I need to install first. It's not on my computer, but the RTW installer thinks it is, and tries to uninstall it instead of installing -- I have no idea how it's running through so many files that aren't even on the computer. I'm just wondering if anyone else here has ever seen that happen...

There are endless numbers of threads on how to completely delete RTW from your system, but suffice to say you need to delete the keys in the registry using regedit.

Yeah, the other threads seem to all involve deleting creative assembly entries from the registry, as well as hand-deleting any left-over files. I've deleted the folders, and there's no creative assembly or rtw references in my registry. As far as I know, that means it _should_ be gone, but it's not. Ah well.

Wipe the harddrive lol...that should help :beam:. But no i havent come across this before. Did you delete the R:TW folders and files before you uninstalled it through Add/Remove Programs, because the comp doesnt usually like that...

Wiping this HD not gonna happen, way too much stuff of importance. Sad, means no EB for me. I never should have uninstalled it in the first place.

Did you read this? Purple emphasis is mine.

first off, check the Activision Support pages and do a search on your problem. most likely, if you had a problem, someone else had the same or similar problem and there's a good chance you can find the answer on the Support site. i refer to their pages to help others here and they're actually pretty good.

the main Activision site is: http://activision.com/en_US/home/home.jsp

the start of the support pages: https://activision.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/activision.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php

the following is copied from the Activision Support page. i'm reprinting it here because of the number of problems we've seen with un-install and re-installing of Rome: Total War:

This answer is for an Advanced user. Please do not attempt the below solution if you are not comfortable editing the Registry. Damaging the Registry could result in very adverse effects to your system. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

If you are having problems uninstalling the game you can manually remove it from your machine. First it will be necessary to remove the registry keys the game creates. Please be cautious when working with the registry as it is very sensitive. Deleting the wrong thing can result in complete operating system failure.

1) Click Start then Run.
2) At the prompt type: REGEDIT. The registry editor will open.
3) Click the "+" next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
4) Click the "+" next to SOFTWARE.
5) Click the "+" next to The Creative Assembly
6) Right-Click to delete the The Creative Assembly entry.
7) Click the "+" next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
8) Click the "+" next to SOFTWARE.
9) Click the "+" next to The Creative Assembly
10) Right-Click to delete the The Creative Assembly entry.
11) Close the registry editor.

Once the registry keys are removed, we'll need to remove the game files from your hard drive. These instructions assume you've installed the game in the default directory.
1) Double-click My Computer.
2) Double-click the C:\ drive.
3) Double-click Program Files.
4) Double-click Total War
4) Right-click on the Rome: Total War folder and choose delete.

Remove the RomeTW.ini file from your hard drive.
12) Click the Start button > Find (or Search) > Files & Folders.
13) Search your C:\ drive for a file named RomeTW.ini.
14) The file should be located in C:\WINDOWS.
15) Delete this file.
16) Reboot your machine. At this point the game is completely removed from your system.

you shld particularly note number 13. this is one of the 'hidden' files of RTW. it is normally NOT in the same place as the game installation! if this doesnt get removed and you attempt to re-install the game to a different location on your harddrive, it most likely will fail and you'll need to remove this file first.

additionally, if you're doing the same thing with the Rome demo, uninstalling and reinstalling, there is also one of these .ini files for the demo and that one also will need to be removed prior to reinstalling.

K.

I did those things... anyway, a professional uninstall program did the trick.
