View Full Version : Gameroom Chess Tourney?
Pannonian

Update:
I'm in my second game against Pannonian (entering mid game) and first game against Xiahou (early stage).
I'm pretty sure the game with Pannonian will be over tomorrow or the Friday, it'll probably take a bit longer to finish the two games against Xiahou because of different timezones.
I won't be able to play on Saturday and most of Sunday because of RL obligations.
A cracking game it currently is as well.

It seems as if I'm going to have to pull out of this mainly because I don't have too much time in the week coming up at least for me to be able to sit down and have a good chess game with anyone.

A blunder that results in the loss of a piece without compensation will usually result in a defeat. See my second game with Ichigo for examples of minor position mistakes that result in loss of time and a weaker position, and how that builds up. See my game with Cambovenzi for examples of positional mistakes that result in loss of activity and coordination, and how that builds up. I have a game somewhere where a bog standard opening was transformed, and my entire game from thereon was centred on an undefended square on d5.
Here's the game. Note that after 8...c5, my immediate response was to swap off my black-square Bishop, which can't control the d5 square, with his Knight, which can. Once that was done, I had 2 pieces that could control that square, and he had 1, and a further exhange gave me uncontested control of that square, from which my Bishop controlled the later game.

Qxf6 Rg8 14. Bd5 Qd2 15. Rfd1 Qxc2 16. Rac1 Qxb2 17. Rb1 1-0
And here's how it might have continued. After the played moves above, the best Black can do is to obfuscate the attack with a Queen for Rook exchange (not appetising), but the below is fairly plausible if White doesn't want to lose his Queen. After 18...Rg7 defending against Qxb7 mate, the subsequent moves are forced. Note the Bishop dancing around the d5 square where it's immune from attack, and how the d6 pawn blocks in the black Bishop.

Stephen Assen feels the reek of camels and of dead Argentinians that fills the air... Only his firm grip on the reins of his horse keeps the terrified animal under control. He stares at the Royal head of the Black King that was put on a spear. He lowers his gaze as to show more respect to the fallen general and occasionally meets the Arabian letters.
"One King to rule them all.
Fifteen pieces could fall,
but he shall ultimately survive.
Ohterwise your enemy will thrive!"
He smiles to himself and rides back followed by his hooded guards. Behind the hill his legions are waiting. And if his plan is correct, until Monday the next week he will invade the Rhy' Kingdom.
One King to rule them all...

IMO its best to be ahead of schedule than behind, especially when timezones differ and you may not be able to catch your opponent during certain times later.

http://www.chess.com/echess/game.html?id=10732823Defining moment in this game, IMO, happened after the Q-R skewer (9. ... Bg4 10. Qg3 Bxd1 11. Kxd1).
Noticed that defending both e and g pawns from Seamus' queen was impossible, but after a while realized that '#. Qxg7' was a death trap. (my queen met a similar fate during Game 2 against pevergreen)
Defended e pawn w/ '11. ... Qd6' and hoped... (with fingers crossed on both hands:7jester:)...he would notice the 'dangling' g pawn but not the trap.

Losing the Queen (I saw the trap one move late) not only put me at a power disadvantage, but the timing and placement put me behind the curve the rest of the game. I struggled on, but my efforts only increased his costs, G never let me change the power metric back to even. My only consolation is that a better player defeated me in this game, and did not beat AND embarrass me as in our first confrontation. Congratulations.

Announcement from His Imperial Highness:
Currently the Serpent-Prince is fighting three wars against the armies of Andres, Waspinator and Askthepizzaguy. Whilst the armies of the Prince are fighting well against Andres and still hold their own against Wasp, their center is nearly broken by the improved and upgraded army of Askthepizzaguy. But this is not what matters now. The decisive battle is against the armies of General Waspinator and his army should be defeated at any rate.

I accepted a challenge from Cambovenzi.
Report: Made silly mistake against Andres and lost a bishop unnecessarily. Now best chance is to play for a draw. Will remember to THINK before moving the pieces, and never to underestimate my opponents.
Battle versus the indestructible armies of the Asen is going well, but perhaps not as well as the Dark Lord suspects. Current status of our forces is that we are up by a single, isolated pawn, and we have the advantage of two bishops versus a bishop and a knight in an open game. Consequently, Asen's forces are weak on the light squares. The Lord himself is safe and his pieces are developed well, and the only concrete advantage we seem to have is that the Lord is on the defensive. We need to develop our King Rook and give the king a defense against possible back rank mates. Trading down to the endgame is premature, as our advantage is not enough to force the issue. We must proceed carefully, and not make any tactical blunders against Asen, who has been known to leap on such errors immediately, spotting them all with amazing skill.
Should we make a blunder like the one we made against Andres, all hope will be lost.
While we've engaged in a friendly bout with the armies of Lord Askthepizzaguy, our armies have been crushed by the might of Lord Asen. We'll return to the field shortly though, after these commercials.

I have been doing a lot of tactics training, endgame studies, opening studies, and reading books by Yasser Seriawan and Josh Waitzkin. My big thick book is the Complete Chess course by Fred Reinfeld. Yasser's book teaches space, tactics, and pawn structure really well, and Josh is like the undisputed master of attacking.
I used to be very, very good at this game but I've gotten rusty over the years of not playing. I didn't play in school because no one wanted to play against me. Playing so many opponents recently and studying several hours each day has improved the game.
I'll even say it: My big weakness is playing as Black. I've studied White's game so much, that I am way out of my element when I am playing as the Black pieces. Too defensive, not enough attacking.

If you've never heard of it, join the 299,999,999 other Americans who haven't.
But ya, in the next few days, I'd like to get another game going.
Game invite sent, we'll redo the first game :beam:
So I've played a couple games, and I remembered something: I really suck at chess. Especially online chess, which I seem to do worse at than normal chess.
So I was wondering what you guys would recommend in the way of reading and the like in order to get better?

My mom bought this book so she could keep up with me. She never finished it and I devoured it myself.
As for online stuff, give yourself a few days or more per turn, and work things out on a plastic chessboard at home. Play both sides and really try to beat yourself as your opponent, dont pretend your opponent will go easy on you.
Try your best to beat yourself, and perhaps your opponent will not be able to.

I found the databases for downloading here (http://www.hoflink.com/~npollock/chess.html). Place them in your ChessBase\CompBase directory. It is also recommended that you download an opening book, which can be found here (http://www.rybkachess.com/index.php?auswahl=Download+demo) (The second download). It is put in the same location.

This game was interesting, because I accidentally allowed Andres to fork my queen and bishop. He snagged the piece and I was in a losing position. A couple of moves later, he had my queen and rook forked too, but that one was just a little bit premature... the king was not safe and that led to a sudden checkmate.
Pointless commentary and general observations by me:
[B]Dangerous positions and paralyzing tactics
We've all made moves which leave our king exposed, so remember the principle of King Safety. Castling in the opening or early middlegame is usually advised, but once the King is castled, keep an eye on any and all pieces that are currently attacking the squares around the king, or near the king, any knights which could attack a pawn or square near the king or check the king, and any rooks, bishops, or queens which are aiming themselves at these squares. Also be careful about sudden piece sacrifices. A bishop, pawn, or knight, even the queen, could throw themselves at these pawns like a suicide bomber, ripping open the pawn shield, exposing the king, and if there are enough enemy pieces in range, this could result in an immediate and unfortunate king hunt.
You can be up in material by several pieces, but if the enemy army is gunning for your king, your forces can become paralyzed. Especially dangerous are any discovered checks. Discovered checks allow one piece to move and reveal an attacking piece behind it, which checks the king. The opposing army has to respond to the check immediately, and that allows the moved piece a free hand to cause massive damage in an attack which would otherwise be a kamikaze maneuver, another turn is allowed for a safe return or another, second attack. Double checks are particularly devastating, if the discovered check is coupled with a check from the moving piece, the king is checked twice by two different pieces from two different directions. It is impossible to stop both checks without moving the king, which means double checks literally paralyze every piece on the board for one turn.
The King is the biggest target of them all, even if checkmate is not threatened, any check must be responded to, and that can lead to other pieces being captured. Also beware of any check the opponent can give which forces the king to move, which could lead to another check which forces the king back. That could draw the game no matter how well you're doing. Draw by perpetual check.
All of this is stuff most chess players know, but we forget that it's the top priority. We could use tactics to win material, like a fork, or a check, but before we do, we must ensure that we aren't open to any kind of sudden checks or forks ourselves. Defense is more important than offense, because once your position is secure, you are free to make the brilliant sacrifices and aggressive moves, secure in the knowledge that your opponent doesn't have an even better counterattack. Everything depends on the position itself, so don't move unless you know for sure your opponent doesn't have a devastating reply tactically.
Strategy is a different matter, and that is less about tactics and more about long term positional struggles and goals.
We shouldn't be so cautious that we never seize the moment, by all means do so. But before you make a good move, check to see if your opponent has a great reply. And always sit on your hands and look for an even better move. Had I done that in the above game, I would not have lost my bishop unnecessarily, and potentially the game. I was only saved by my opponent, and you should never put yourself in such a desperate position.
Overall strategy:
I admit my own long term strategic thinking has big gaping holes in it at times. But sometimes the strategy is obvious... come up with an idea which could win you a better position, maybe not the game, but a better position.
Imagine for example that you can win a knight for a bishop, and in order for your opponent to take the bishop, he must move his kingside pawn shield, thus making his castled position or potential castled position more dangerous. If you can rapidly mobilize your queen or rooks near that area, or send a knight in, you could expose and drag down the king. Also important, your opponent will usually have to respond to your threat.
When your opponent is busy responding to your threats, assuming they are sound ideas, often times their options will be limited and will not be able to think so much on how to attack you. If your position is safe and secure, and you're attacking with real threats or real long term threats, they may be forced to simply react to you, cramping their position, binding their pieces down to the defense of their king, and they become more passive and easy to control.
Some things like grabbing open files with your rooks are important strategically, they allow you to control a lot of squares even in the enemy position, which gives you a foothold and limits the movements of certain pieces for fear of being captured.
In this game (http://www.chess.com/echess/game.html?id=11497889):
I faced Quintus.JC and my whole idea was to trade my bad bishop for his good bishop, and a bishop for his knight. With the position closed, and no way to attack a knight placed on d4, I knew I would have a positional advantage. I could not force this position, but Quintus made several pawn moves which caused the dark squares to become weak, so I formed a plan around that very small weakness.
My second plan was to make the Queenside become very cramped and closed to his bishop, queen and rooks, so I could safely castle there. Then I would focus everything on the kingside and try to bring about an endgame where I have perhaps some passed pawns and force a queen.
If he makes weakening pawn moves around his king, I intend to capitalize. For now, his options would be quite limited and I would have the positional advantage, the initiative, and the all important concept of King Safety, whereas his King would be castled on a cramped side of the board under attack by my forces, which is less safe in my estimation.
We will see how the game progresses.

I second ATPG's sentiment on the importance of protecting your king. Look for example at my recent friendly game with shlin.
http://www.chess.com/echess/game.html?id=11538819
I made some absolutedly criminal moves early on, and things didn't stabilise until I was 10-0 down in points. I had lost a knights, rook, and two pawns. However, using my queen and a bishop I was able to pin shlin back, and take dominance of the game. By the time I had just about pinned back the deficit, I made another criminally stupid move, sacrificing my queen because I thought his would check-mate me (what was I thinking). There was no recovery from that, but the resurgence after the early mistakes shows how vulnerable shlin's king was, and the consequences it nearly had for him.

The final position loses a bishop for black, and most of his pieces are undeveloped or passive. The pawn takes pawn, and the queen or the bishop hangs. The rook is also dangerously undefended.
If 14 exf6, e5, 15 fxg7 wins the bishop. If ... exf4, Rxe8+, then after the king takes the pawn, Rae1 doubles the Rooks and white has a dominant game.
Pannonian asked me to use this position to show what the dangers of a passive defense were. However, I feel that except for 13....f6?, black had a playable game, if perhaps weaker.
If 13... Qb6, attacking a pawn, black's knight is in danger of 14. h3. But black wins two pawns in compensation for his knight with Nxf2, 15. Qxf2, Qxb2 Not an overwhelming margin, but the position favors white.

The computer concluded, as I did, that neither side made any blunders until 13. ...f6
It only so happens that white made small positional grabs.
[B]
My analysis:
1. d4 queens pawn opening, followed by g6 with the bishop fianchetto, allows 2. e4, with the dreaded twin center pawn opening for white, grabbing the most space possible and two lines for the bishops, and extra squares for both knights. This opening is technically called the Robatsch Defense transposed, according to my opening book.
Black's compensation, the fianchettoed bishop, is powerful, but in my estimation covers only one color. White's game controls both colors more equally.
3. Nf3 a logical developing move, hitting the center and even countering black's claim to the dark squares. d6 continues challenging the dark squares and opens a line for the Queen bishop, also reasonable.
4. Bg5 is a pet move I came up with, out of the opening book. This move pins the king pawn to the queen, blocks the g6 pawn, and if h6, black's castled pawn structure is somewhat weakened and loses time. White retreats to safety, losing nothing.
Nf6 removes the pin, but blocks the fianchettoed bishop, black's main piece. The knight attacks white's undefended king pawn.
5. Bd3 defends the pawn and develops a piece. The bishop move allows castling kingside. 0-0 castles black.
White's bishops are more active than Black's. White's pawns are more centralized and advanced than Black's. The knights are equal in strength, and Black has castled while white has not committed himself to castling on either side, with no danger on the king yet.
6. Nc3 develops a new piece and attacks the center again, before castling. c6 challenges the center, but occupies a critical square for the queen knight, blocking it in. The pawn does limit the movement of white's queen knight.
7. 0-0 castles whites king on the kingside, preparing to develop the rooks in the volatile center. Re8 challenges white's plans to control the center.
8. e5 forces black to commit himself to a structure. He either can take or move the knight, and neither is palatable. the pawns are exchanged, and the knight has to move.
Black chooses 9...Ng4 which looks aggressive, but is a hasty advance. It has no support and puts the knight on a square where advance isn't recommended and retreat is just as bad.
The computer cannot see this, but look at the squares the knight can move to; none of them look very good. All of them trade or lose the knight, which results in far more limited options for the piece. This move weakens the piece itself in this position, a less tangible weakness, as the position could change. But for now, the piece is less useful and vulnerable. Better is Nd5.
10 Qe2 develops the queen on the dangerous e-file and defends the pawn at e5. Qc7 removes the pin on the e-pawn and attacks white's e-pawn.
The queen has limited scope here. Note how few squares the queen commands. She is not on an active file, she is attacking a well defended pawn, she no longer defends the Rook on e8, is blocked in by her own pieces and pawns on several sides.
Black's structure is limiting his options. Note how the queen rook cannot move, the queen knight cannot move to an active square without blocking the queen, the bishop cannot move to a square that does not block in the queen, the e-pawn, or allows a bishop trade which weakens pawn structure. The knight on g4 is still barely engaged in the center and is hanging vulnerably to pawn attacks. The queen bishop is blocked in by its own lightsquare pawns, the queen isn't as dangerous on d8 or c7 as white's queen, developing the queen to the queenside takes her majesty far away from her royal consort and avoids the center. Due to white's queen, knight, bishops, and pawns, the queenside is also dangerous to Black's queen who would be posted out there by herself, with open lines of attack against her shortly. Black's pawn structure is fairly strong, but cramped. He commands less space than white.
11. Rfe1 doubles rook and queen on the e-file, forming a battering ram. Nh6 is far too passive.
12. Qd2 threatens to win the knight outright, it must retreat. Nf5 would be better, but it returns to g4, trying to be aggressive when it is not effective in that role here.
13. Bf4 defends the pawn again, and threatens a discovery against the queen next turn with a pawn move.
13...f6 loses to the tactical scenarios described above. Before the error, blacks' game was down by slightly more than two points, according to chess.com analysis (*2000 rated).

When you're ahead by such a wide margin, and you can trap someone's King, always remember to give the king two spaces to move back and forth in.
And when you queen or do anything that might affect the coverage of the board, be sure you are not taking squares away from the king.
Stalemate is easy to avoid. Just let your opponent breathe and he will choke himself to death.

I managed to come back against Caius after he tricked me into losing my Queen. We both offered each other draws at different stages in the came, however I trapped his Queen and won it in the end.

To the Pizzaguy opponents:
He is not strong but he beats us all because we give him the opportunity. Try to do better and stop hiding in the bushes like coward women!
:p
Lost another game with the reborn pizzaguy (look the link above).

My strategy is pretty simple.
I like to render your pieces ineffective. Look at my recent games. I like to trap your bishops behind your own pawns, and make them bite on granite against my pawn formation. I like to take squares away from your knights, so they are less effective. It's all about the pawns.
I like to trade queens, because I render counterplay ineffective with less powerful pieces on the board. I look for forks and pins at every opportunity, anything to limit options.
Don't let me take away options. To keep the game even, open up space and trade your ineffective pieces for my good pieces.

Well, I could be wrong but I still have the good opportunity to trun the game with my pair of knights. The problem was that I made a stupid blunder without preparing the ground first! I do not blame it on a single blunder but this determined the battle.
Third game. At least I finlally got a constant player to kill the time, :2thumbsup:
My duel with Quintus has ended in my favor (2-0). GG good sir:bow:

Just wondering, but we still seem very even, and your special pieces are more more 'established' than mine
I maneuvered your queen into a deadly trap, and tried to win the game outright by winning the queen, even though I KNEW you had a good reply by attacking my king.
I gambled that you wouldn't see the move, but you did.
To defend my king against checkmate, I have to interpose with a piece, using my queen loses the queen outright, and using the knight loses a bishop. No master level player would call that position even after losing the bishop, and with strong attack on my exposed king position, I'm done for.
Well played, and although I created the weakness which won you the game deliberately, you seriously deserve credit for keeping a cool head and seeing the solution.
Your queen is toast, but not if my king is. Rematch anytime, my friend.
