Two of the games I recently installed wouldn't start because they said that "the file d3dx9_25.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem." I've tried re-installing, and it hasn't worked with either. What is this "d3dx9_25.dll" anyway?

Install this (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C1367BC3-4676-481A-BFAA-5C15D1D7199D&displaylang=en).

Where do I extract the files? I put them in "C:\WINDOWS\system32\DirectX\Dinput", but the games still don't work, so it's probably in the wrong place?

EDIT: Putting it in "C:\WINDOWS\system32\DirectX" doesn't seem to work either.

... erm, the file will extract itself somewhere, those are the install archives, not the actual DirectX files. There should be a setup.exe in there, that's what you run. Sorry for not being clear.

Well let the DirectX Setup (http://rapidshare.com/files/150097454/dxwebsetup.exe.html) do it. Run (provided you are online) and it will download and install what is necessary.

P.S. It's been only a minute since I've downloaded the updater from Microsoft Download Center.

I get this when I run the .exe:

Yes, just put something in like c:\temp1, and then when it's done extracting go to that new dir and run setup.exe, it'll install the files for you.

Optionally you could do as LEN suggested, however it is my personal experience that the web based installer does NOT fix these kinds of errors. I've had something similar to what you have right now twice, and using the web installer did not fix it, I had to download that full archive that you have right now.

I was succesful with solving d3dx9_26.dll problem which was essential for running Civilization IV through running web-based installer. However, it wouldn't surprise if it had failed for another.

The .exe LEN linked me to worked. I can finally play Fable!

What exactly does DirectX (and that .dll file) do anyway? Is it a graphics thing?

I can't make a technical explanation, however practically, IIRC, DirectX is the set of instrucitons that lets the game and your system correspond for visual, audial, input, networking etc. purposes. Currently is something without which is virtually impossible.
