Well, GTA IV was released for PC yesterday, but from what I have seen on hardware forums, it is a monster. It may possibly replace Crysis as the most computer intensive game out there, or at least replace it for CPUs.

It DOES NOT SUPPORT SLI/Crossfire. Thats right, the game that recommends the ATI 3870 to run it can't even use SLI.

Just to show you guys how awful it is, look at this from a guy with a pretty sick ass computer:

Statistics
Average FPS: 44.63
Duration: 37.51 sec
CPU Usage: 49%
System memory usage: 39%
Video memory usage: 75%

Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 (60 Hz)
Texture Quality: High
Render Quality: Highest
View Distance: 32
Detail Distance: 70

Hardware
Microsoft® Windows Vista" Ultimate
Service Pack 1
Video Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
Video Driver version: 7.14.10.621
Audio Adapter: Speakers (Creative SB X-Fi)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9650 @ 3.00GHz

Okay, this guy has a ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2, the fastest videocard on the planet out there and it still doesn't too well. Apparently, the FPS dips down to 10 at times too so the benchmarks are actually making it seem faster than it actually is

It seems like it is very poorly optimized. Even though it requires an absolutely insane computer to run even half decently, it looks nowhere as decent as Crysis which is old now. Apparently, Rockstar has said that current computers should be expected to only run the game on medium settings; the high settings will only be available on next generation hardware computers, ie probably Core i7 and 4870s/GTX 280s

It seems like it is very poorly optimized. I think that's always been the case with their ports PC hasn't it? I remember having numerous issues with the PC version of Vice City....

Well, now I can stop wondering if I want to get it.

Really, this is pathetic.

It's running pretty fine on my PS3, though granted the resolution is a bit low but still.

Otherwise reminds me of Operation Flashpoint, that game was also made for future computers, at least if you wanted long visible ranges and highest terrain details. In a way that is a good thing as it gives you something to get excited about next time you upgrade your computer.

Don't see what is the problem. I've been playing my X360 version without any problems so far. The game is a blast, arguably the best GTA so far. Though Samuel L. Jackson is Samuel L. Jackson, can't beat that.

MUAHAHAAA!!!

And I was looking forward to it too. Such a pity that new games are all such monsters nowadays. GTA:VC and even GTA:SA were pretty managable for me.

And its times like this that I wished I had a console.

The high end computer hardware should beat PS3/XBOX360 no problem in terms of benchmarks, but Rockstar somehow messed it all up..... The thing is, I'm fine if you want to create the next Crysis, but for god sakes, at least support SLI/Crossfire.....Also, if you want a game that rivals Crysis's hardware requirements, at least make the game look as nice as the huge amounts of money needed to buy the hardware to play it....

How could something that graphics intensive not support SLI? That's insane!

A post (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=2076476&postcount=116) I made in the Gaming New Thread regarding this.

Apparently now it seems whenever a big name game goes wrong in some fashion, its off to 1 star Amazon reviews....

I don't know. The last three GTA's released, I have PC versions of them and I have only tried the console versions for less than 30 minutes of each. I think that the game is just not optimized properly as it should have been, this is a lazy sloppy work. Really sends me a message, that they made enough of paper bags on X360 and PS3 versions. And like with previous titles, this is pretty much a straightforward port without too much stress and additional costs, testing. Plus, they are making new content for at least X360, this simply takes valuable resources. So there you have it.

What is funny to me is that as far as I know, these games have been developed in Scotland for ages. Core parts of them anyway engines, coding all that. Excluding soundtracks, maybe art, voice acting and testing (done probably mostly in New York). These are the same PC developers that started the whole franchise. I'm not sure how many of the same people are still there, but some of them definitely are and they are probably senior leaders by now.

Threads devoted to specs and performance are better suited to the Software/Hardware forum.
Threads devoted to gameplay go in the Arena.

Your probably thinking of Grand Theft Auto III - horrible performance compared to the PC ports of Vice City and San Andreas. IIRC it tried to render everything, not just your view.

I own all 3 PC versions, cos I'm a thug :smash:

I own Vice City and San Andreas, but so far im keeping my cash for GTA IV until they fix everything. I've been waiting for it but until they fix it, I ain't shelling my cash.
