I'm getting the following error message when trying to start a campaign: Protection Error window:" Debugger detected. You need to close it and restart the program. When running Windows NT, programs like WinICE/SoftICE can cause this"

Things I checked so far:

- I'm on WinVista 32, installed directly on c: not under program files.
- Ran RTW vanilla, patched to 1.5. Campaign starts without problem
- Downloaded EB 1.1 and 1.2 several times an reinstalled several times. Always the same error. (Installed EB on my little notebook and it works...well slow...very slow...it's an old one ;), but at least I know I installed EB in the correct way)
- I'm not 100% sure about having a debugger program, but I'm sure I never installed one personally. I use McAffe as protection and use RegCure from time to time. I also could not find any program that might be a running debugger program in my task window.

Why does Vanilla run without problems and not EB? Does EB use a program not used by vanilla?

Any Help is appriciated!

This is RTW's DRM screwing things up, I believe it's Safedisc. I've had the same problem with M2TW Kingdoms (Securom), which was caused by me having had FileMon running at one time in the past. EB is RomeTW.exe, so there is nothing we do any other way than vanilla for this matter.

Try to restart your computer and run EB. That will clear out any remnant of whatever program it doesn't like, unless you automatically start it when you reboot.

Also you can check that the shortcut is correct, and run a validation.

Thanks bovi, but that doesn't seem to help. I have reinstalled the game and restarted the PC several times. Game runs until I choose to play the campaign and press the arrow button on the lower right to start it.

I went again through all the programs running on my task bar and I can't find anything that might be the cause of the debugger error.

The error might also be caused by some video codecs. Try to run EB without movies (-nm switch).
In google you can find other common sources like Ulead's amdfix.sys and

For those of you who installed the driver/application software from Creative Labs Audigy 2 Platinum, you simply need to "uncheck" the box that lets that annoying Creative Introduction/Getting Started/Demo screen launch on startup, then reboot your system to see if A-the annoying startup graphic stops launching at startup and B-your game stops prompting you to "unload the debugger" when you try to run it.

I'll try that tonight when I come home, Iamphet, thanks. There is probably an entry somewhere here on the forum how exactly you have to make the changes you mentioned. You have the link for the -nm switch?

Iamphet, that was it!!! Started without movies and that solved it.
For all of you who might have the same problem, it was caused by my brand new
Nvidea 280. Of no use this ultra hightech crap :smash:

Thanks for all your help Bovi and Iamphet! :2thumbsup:

Glad to hear my wild guess worked.
