View Full Version : Winning Conditions?
A quick question for you guys that frequent the Sword Dojo. What are the winning conditions for Shogun? I`m asking because I`m playing as Shimazu at the moment and I am the only remaining clan. I currently hold 1 third of Japan. Do I have to conquer every single province? I dont really fancy having to slog through all the rebel held territories when I am the only power left.
Either eliminate all other clans (excluding rebels), or conquer whole/40 of the 60 provinces (this depends on what you selected at the beginning of the campaign.
Sorry mate, just ignore me lol. I forgot that you can set the victory conditions before the campaign begins. So, annoyingly, that campaign of mine is set to conquer all provinces. I`m just gonna claim moral high ground for the victory as I`m the only one left :)
Yeah, it's just your own choice before the campaign. I always choose conquer 40 out of 60 + Eliminate all enemy clans. (so if there's 20 rebel regions left you win) That's realistic enough, and it's nice that you don't have to play through those last boring minutes and still get the nice 'end video'. ~:)
Btw, iirc, the victory conditions aren't choosable in orginial S:TW. Only in MI and WE versions.
Yeah cheers mate, I`ve sorted it now. Just started Imagawa 1530 on expert and set conditions to wipe out other clans.

Same here -- usually. On rare occasions I've been in a particularly bloodthirsty mood and decided I wanted to conquer every last territory opposed to my rightful rule, but generally I go with the 40/60 win condition as well.

Really? It's been so long since I played vanilla STW I'd forgotten that. Good to know.
Lol, I always choose "Conquer all." Dunno why. I guess because I want to see the map in unicolour? Yeah, I think that's the reason. :dizzy2:

I always choose conquer all and then often get annoyed when I drive the enemy back to one province where he has so many troops I can't defeat them before the timer so one of my generals has to take a loss. It's always annoying to see a general lose a star after he's killed his opponent and routed successive waves of enemy troops only to run out of time.
well i knew that feeling until i switched off the timer :D
I always did and still do opt for the conquer the entire map scenerio. It feels more satisfying for some reason. Never did like it though that the only clan left to contend with, who owned perhaps the other half of the map would go rebel after he sacrificed all his family members in a few battles for a few provinces. Oh well, still entertaing though!
I used to think that the availability of winning conditions was a good thing in the past - and perhaps it was given that with the costs of buildings in MI one can win the camapaign without having to starve other clans of land. However after i got back playing "original" STW (that has only domination as goal) i think that domination suits far better, and i enjoy that more, even the mopping up phase. In technical terms having domination as a single goal could have helped with tuning better the strategic AI capabilities to that goal - it was one the AI understood. In MTW, GA goals were a great mode of play but only when the player used them as a pretext to play slow expansion/little expansion campaigns. The AI did not understood them and so it was less competitive with them, not to mention that it was greatly undermined by the influence feature.

Total War = Total Domination for me. It's not a huge affair like it is in MTW, so I tend to play out entire games. I like comparing how long it takes each time too, depending on what strategy I used, etc..
I think the shortest campaign i ever played was approx 16 hours, uesugi/expert/huge units/v1.12. I finished in 1548 and about 4 hours were the sieges. I played all battles and didn't use the speed slider. i played them straight - it was a great camp.
Usually i dont get that lucky of course and campaigns last far longer (for days with brakes), especially when choosing southwestern clans like the Mori and the Shimazu or the Oda. I haven't played the Hojo in a long while; they are the easiest imo and for the same reason good for beginners; it was the first clan with which i managed to succeed slightly with (like holding my own and not getting wiped out) 10 years ago when i first played.
