Music in Empire

With the lack of information at the moment things seem to be quite quiet on the Empire front.

So in the interest of stirring up activity and discussion I've come up with a new thread idea.

Music.

Music has always been well done in the Total War series. In every game the score has done a great job of adding to the atmosphere and excitement of the games.

In Empire CA have an opportunity that has not really been present before in the series. What do I mean? Well for this era we actually know what music people listened to. We have examples of folk songs, military marches, drinking songs, sea shanties, operas and classical scores that were all around at the time.

If CA were to include some of these in-game it could really set the mood and help draw us into the period.

There is another key example of music which could be a great addition the the game:

National anthems.

Many countries national anthems first appeared during the time period. Wouldn't it be great to hear your nation's anthem play after a heroic victory?

So what do you think about using classical and historical music in the game? Do you have any pieces you would paticularly like to hear? What do you think about national anthems, and which country do you think has the best anthem? (Try not to argue too much about this :laugh4:)

Traditional marches! Folk tunes from the various lands, It would be great if you could select a particular tune for your various generals and admirals. Their special march for battle…but that isn’t going to happen.

So we will listen to Yankee Doodle and maybe Gary Owen, Irish Washer Woman, and a few others until we pull out our hair…

While we could include national anthems, unless it was british or american I wouldn't be able to understand it...so I prefer the usual way CA does it. Long classical scores with plenty of unique and creative tunes that fit the time period.

CA has done a phenomenal job so far with music, I leave it up to them to figure out what to do this time.

As you listen to British military marches, you'll notice that often there is the "British military intro", which consists of two sets of rolling drums, each striking three times. (trrr-trrr-trrr, trrr-trrr-trrr)

Just about every song in Edinburgh Military Tattoo is good, depending on taste, I never heard them all, it's mostly bagpipe and fife and drums. Edinburgh Military Tattoo can be found easily on youtube.

So British national anthem is Rule Britannia) could be accompanying music to an event page, not the kind of music playing again and again

Again, the Francs are excellent at writing glorious military songs. I merely didn't post this one at first because there is a line describing immortality as dying for the fatherland, which isn't true. Immortality is living with Jesus. For a military composition the music is excellent. The lyrics has bravery such as "...To the death we stood in ranks. The regiment, by sprayed projectiles, was assailed on all sides. Yet the living/human rampart remained impassible and standing"

i would love to have some classical music, preferably some orchestral stuff, for the campaign map and naval battles especially. in particular, i would love stringed instruments in the naval music (dont ask why. i just do).
I also love the idea of national anthems-only problem is if some nations have them and others dont, it will seem more conspicuous if they aren't there.

I really hope some more effort is put into this. I´d like to see, or hear ;), faction specific music for each faction. Why they bother to hire an composer for each game is beyond me however good the music has been this far. The only prob, I guess, with my request, is the sheer volume that is needed to have authentic music for each faction.

Personally I would like to see faction specific music, with historical songs from each faction making up that faction's soundtrack.

As for not understanding the lyrics in the national anthems, it's personal choice of course but I say why bother about it? They are usually a good listen even if you don't know what exactly is being said. It's always the same thing anyway (our country is great, look at how great we are, we win in lots of fights etc.).

CA have already mentioned that units on the battle map will yell out commands and battle cries in the appropriate faction specific language. Faction specific national anthems would simply add another layer of atmosphere and immersion.

I can foresee a few problems with this however. What happens if Britian becomes a republic? Clearly 'God Save the King' is no longer appropriate. The game would have to switch to using 'Rule Brittania' instead. (Incidentally a very good song for a naval victory.)

I can just iamgine the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly playing during the tense stand off between two armies, just before both lines of muskets let loose. It would be a fantastic way of building the tension. :laugh4:

Native drumming wouldn't be so bad if done well. Personally military drumming is some of my favourite music (although not for casual listening.)

The things I am most looking forward to are the battlefield musicians. I want to hear a lone piper playing 'Scotland the Brave' as the last of the Jacobite rebels fall to English shot. Or a triumphant pipe song echoing eerily across a valley between two armies right before an epic battle begins.

In terms of dramatic tension you just can't get any better than drums and bagpipes.

The English general is walking though a misty dale on the Scottish border. Tendrils of fog curl around him, as if trying to drag him into the white blanket that surrounds his forces. He knows that there will be a battle today, but he knows not who will be the enemy or how many men they have. His own men are skittish, the boggy land and the clouds of fog make marching difficult. This land seems alien to them, hostile, as if the hills themselves hate their English masters.

As they trudge through the white hell, no sound can be heard. It is eerily silent in the same way a graveyard is, horrors lurking just beyond the edge of hearing and site.

And then one man hears it, a green foot soldier who has never seen battle before. He gestures to them men around him, now they hear it to.

The steady beat of a drum, somewhere in the mists.

The drum beat grows louder, and then is joined by another drum, and another. The beat stays simple, but the soldiers know it is now dozens of drums pounding out that steady thump, like the heartbeat of some great predator.

The beat grows louder, something is coming through the fog.

Suddenly an unearthly wail cuts through the air. A piper has begun to play a dirge. The piercing music of the bagpipes chills English hearts. Now they know the enemy, and they know they are close. Terror wells up inside the untested soldiers. their courage is wavering on the brink of routing.

The drum beat gets faster. More pipes join in the fearsome chorus. The music builds to a crescendo! And then suddenly...

A thousand hardy Scottish clansmen roar out of the fog, screaming defiance and murder at the hated English.


That sort of thing would make for a fantastically atmospheric battle, no matter which side you happened to be playing. :2thumbsup::beam:

Execllent choice of song sir! See this is exactly the kind of song that should be included in Empire! This paticular one could be if Scotland gain a heroic victory against the English.

For those not familiar with Scottish folk songs the lyrics are from 'Hey, Johnnie Cope, are Ye Waking Yet?', a.k.a 'Hey Johnnie Cope, are you awake yet' or 'Heigh! Johnnie Cowp, are ye wauken yet?', or simply "Johnny Cope." Since it's a folk song different regions give it different titles.

It's an account of the Battle of Prestonpans from the view of the Jacobite forces of the Second Jacobite Uprising (Bonnie Prince Charlie's lot.). They won the battle decisively, but a most of the lyrics about Cope's cowardice or either made up or heavily exagerrated.

Still, the winners get to say whatever they like. And in this case write a nifty little folk song to commemorate the victory. :2thumbsup:

Hearing can supplement seeing and direct your attention to active portions of the line, and a quick look for smoke will confirm who is shooting who.

I think that military marches should be included. It would bring the game a alot of realism.
About national anthems, I dont think they were that important back then. I suppose they could be included as part of an achievement event or total victory.

This is a must. I would like to hear some Mozart and other classical composers during the Strategic Phase and then hear the Marches and such during Battle. Gotta have plenty of bagpipes anytime a Scottish Unit sets foot on the field of battle.

I really hope some more effort is put into this. I´d like to see, or hear ;), faction specific music for each faction. Why they bother to hire an composer for each game is beyond me however good the music has been this far. The only prob, I guess, with my request, is the sheer volume that is needed to have authentic music for each faction.

This is an extremely good an idea. And it makes me wonder. If CA don't put much historical, classical music in the game then perhaps the modding community could.

Since all of these songs are well out of copyrite there would be no problem with modders releasing a music mod aimed at giving each faction its own specific songs and tunes.

What do we think? Good idea or bad? I'm not a modder so I don't know how feasible this is.

Reviving this thread to complain about the lack of campaign map music. There's only the (rather medieval sounding) mood music. If a small company like Paradox could license a few hours of the Naxos catalogue, I don't see why CA/Sega couldn't have managed. Need mod or something.

Do appreciate the Bach events though.

I'd love some proper music... the first 2 minutes into the demo i knew i absolutely hated the music. I think the absolute worst decision by CA with this game was to exclude absolutely every score of music we all expected to hear in it.

Where the hell is the marching music? It's utterly crazy CA didn't at least including marching drum and fife music, absolutely astoundingly moronic...

But i know someone will eventually mod it in, and that's how i sleep at night.

It's because music was so astoundingly important in battles of this period. Music alters the mind and instills discipline in men. Drum beats encourage bravado. Certain scores of music played at the right time will give a man an adrenaline rush, and it's just not there and i want it there.

They didn't include battlefield music at all, aside from a slight nod to it in the form of the drummer. Where are the fifes and the bagpipes? Where are the military tattoo's (sp?)?

The game also features no classical or historic music whatsoever :no:.

It would have been nice to see some period music in the game. I don't have a great deal of classical music to put in my stereo and what-not, even though I enjoy it, and Empires music is quite spartan. I end up listening to heavy metal and jazz-fusion most of the time, which is a bit out of the period, I think. :laugh4:

I like the music they have in Empire but why is there hardly any at all? It's also not as dynamic as it was in Rome and Med 2. No marching music for one as others have stated. The music gets old real fast. Need much more.

I turned the music off as I find it distracting during battles.

I'd like to be able to have music on the campaign map, but not on the battle map. Unfortunately it seems this isn't an option. As far as I can tell music has to be either on or off throughout the game.


I could keep going to the options menu to change it every time I enter or exit a battle, but that's far too much hassle......


Why can't CA just give us the option to have different settings for the different modes? It would make sense, after all......

I have to say that I am extremely impressed with the soundtrack. It just doesn't sound like a video game soundtrack - it brings to mind a sweeping film epic. Whoever did it is deserves a fair amount of praise.

I liked MTW2 and Rome's soundtracks. In fact some of the music cut from MTW2 was really good (The extended version of the Northern European Battle music had a nice Organ intro). Empire has really good music but unfortunately its the same 3 tracks. Its either European battle music, Indian battle music, or American battle music. The naval music is OK and the campaign music is meh. I do think it'd be nice to hear marching songs depending on what nation you play but it might have ended up being a hassle when it comes to copyrights, or are they mainly in the public domain? (And would have put Jeff Van Dyck out of a job)
