CA Staff and Admin
Hi guys,
We will be rolling out the first of a series of updates later today with a variety of fixes for Empire: Total War, including:
* Fixed Alt-Tab issue which prevents players from switching away from a full screen window
* Fixed text rendering for certain resolutions
* Fixed localized font overrun issues.
* Fixed a variety of crash and memory leak issues
* Fixed a variety of multiplayer client lock
* Fixed trade nodes for those nations with resource in home region which caused unprofitable trade theatre routes eg: Sweden and Marathas.
There is a constant support program in process which is using your feedback as well as our own testing. We are currently working on the next update which will be available early next week.
Thanks,
Mark O'Connell
Looks like Steam is going to have its upside, better patch support. :beam:

M2 wasn't a steam game however, ETW is.

Wow, a patch a week. Go CA! (Of course they could have tried to makre sure we didn't have problems in the first place ).
One of the biggest issues developers have, is that so many machines have so many different specifications which produce so many problems.
If PC's were all carbon copies of each other, like game consoles or Mac's, they would have a far easier time.

Well this is exellent news.
And great to see the Steam functionality providing an excellent add on.
Doesn't fix, real gameplay issues which are ruining the game and should have been sorted before release.

I'm sure they will be fixed eventually. But bigger issues generally take more time to fix.

Differences in graphics cards do not stop troops from getting on a boat. Hopefully they are going to stop the save game corruption though with this patch.
For all you Steam haters though, this is a great benefit of Steam ... regular patching.

I never had that problem, however, it does stop conflicts, crashes, memory leaks and other things.
Only problem I have had is broken land bridge between mainland Europe and Denmark if you don't own the territory.

Have you been trying to load the troops at a port?
Can't just load up anywhere anymore, need a proper dock etc. :whip:
and as far as the land bridge not working, would the other side be so friendly about receiving an invading army? I know I sure wouldn't be!

You can load them up basically anywhere, and drop them off basically anywhere too. To load, you have to put the ship right at the shore and when your troops are next to it, order them on.
Land bridge is an in game mechanic to cross an area of Ocean without need of a boat. It works on the Swedish side, but the other side is bugged.

It should do, yes.
Great, I keep getting that error in the bigger, more epic battles, curently in the battle of London(UP vs UK)

I'd say we will see a good level of performance increase as CA get to grips with issues that arise from mass usage.
At least I hope so.
I am hoping it fixes my Poland-Lith game. One of the other factions keeps doing something that crashes the game, and it's very annoying due to me being so close to getting every province under my control achievement.

the problem with that is once your land army moves to land it removes all move points.
whereas if you use the "disembark" option from the enemy port your land army retains its move points when you loaded them in your own port.....capish?
Indeed, this is really good and appreciated. Its also politically good since the community can see when , how and how much the developers work on problems and bugs.
Good one.

That I have noticed. However, the poster was saying he couldn't load troops on a boot, not have no movement points when his army has disembarked.
Yes Ultimate 32 Bit
Then you can already fix that.
Get the program CFF Explorer and run it.
Open Empire.exe, click on "file header", Click where it says "click here"(hehe) and check the "app can handle >2gb address space" and then save.
I did this and haven't had this problem since.
Infact haven't had a CTD since I did this.
It pretty much allows ETW to use more then 2gb which Vista puts on games.

Thanks for the good news. Thank god they will continously be updating this game to make it top notch unlike some other developers.
I got the patch now, no luck with my Poland-Lith game though, damn. :(

Where can the patch be downloaded from? Steam?
Right click launch game and then it goes straight to updating it.
Where can the patch be downloaded from? Steam?
Yes in steam.
If you right click on ETW in your game folder (in steam app) and select properties. From there click on the updates tab. You will see a combo box labeled "Automatic Updates". Select "Always keep this game up to date".
From now on whenever you start steam it will check if there a new patch available.
hope it help.

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.
I had it set to always update, so I guess it updated without me knowing it. Never saw anything load... or any signal that ETW had officially installed anything. I rebooted and restarted steam just to be sure.
I still have the same crashing problems unfortunately :(

1) Thank you, Creative Assembly, for keeping on top of these things. I hope this is a portent for the future that you will be doing a much better job from now on of keeping games in a good state.
2) There are still more issues out there, so please keep up the updates.

I had it set to always update, so I guess it updated without me knowing it.
I have it set to ask me before updating, but it still just updated anyway. :furious3: I mean, I would've updated, but I don't like it when my PC does stuff without asking me first.
Anyway, what's the deal with the patch? does it work on saved games, or do you have to start a fresh one for it to take effect?

I was asking questions about the patching process last week...
I didn't seem to notice Steam update anything. I have it set to automatically update Empire:TW, but again...didn't see any update get downloaded.
Is this normal? As in, it's totally behind the scenes with no prompting or notification?

Nine times out of ten, yes. Steam does most of the updates without telling you, although major updates usually trigger a pop-up message when you log in to Steam telling you the update is out (class updates in Team Fortress 2 or the recent UT3 update, for example).
Personally, i love it. I've come online, done everything i needed to do, popped on here, discovered there was an update and that it's already installed. In previous games i'd be searching around for a download link right now, but instead i'm off to play the game :D

The Spartan (Returns)
03-10-2009, 20:06
Well since it's on Steam, there's gonna be frequent minor patches, and some big ones.
So the patch didn't fix my Swedish campaign's CTD issue on Austria's turn. That and the campaign map seems no more smooth than before. I haven't tried anything else but I've heard way too many reports that a lot of people can't even play any battles because of crashing immediately post-patch. Let's hope there's a much quicker stability patch put out instead of waiting another week to add gameplay stuff, if even that.

I saw this too, but I thought it would be more useful for them to put the actual patch notes there...not a message totally unrelated to the patch :laugh4:
I'm not sure about today's, but the one on the 4th was just like a "welcome, the game is available now" message.

This I know from Pevergreen and Sir Beane: With Steam games, version numbers are obsolete. Steam games don't use them.

Pfff....people should have known that major bugs like 'Crash to Desktop' and memory leaks will be patched first and then, secondly, gameplay and balance issues at later date.
I am not happy about it either, but at least having two patches in two weeks shows they are doing something.

I guess, but most posters in the link have the problem that the game doesn't start anymore after the patch or crashes once they want to play a battle.

Ah thank you looks like I've got it!
Just rushed through an essay so I can get playing the game. Not to test the patch mind because I've had no trouble with it and yeah it was clearly going to be the literally game breaking issues that were fixed first. I feel bad for people who are getting contant crashes and seeing all kinds of bugs but I'm not so I suppose ignorance is bliss. Then again I'm making a concerted effort not to read the bug lists because that almost ruined my enjoyment of Med 2.

It wasn't suppose to fix those issues.
Shogun clearly stated that this week's patch would focus on performance, not AI issues.

Well, I for one, am very happy to report much improved reliability post patch.
I was getting 'freeze to reboot' crashes hourly but have just gone four hours without a stutter.
And I am also encouraged that the multitude of pirate copies will not have the patch and will still be suffering!
New Patch - New Bug
When you move a ship out of the trade spot fleet, the entire fleet becomes "void" and invalid.
https://img27.imageshack.us/img27/7359/newbugfun.jpg
no ive seen that trade spot bug befor i had to sell a bunsh of trade ships as they were stuck there not doing anything.
Personally I want a patch for Royal Mail so they finally deliver my game... :inquisitive:
Just ring up Mandy and ask him to stop the privatisation process (OH SNAP)
All the people complaining that everything hasn't been fixed in a week is slightly annoying though. It's hardly like you could do it better.
no ive seen that trade spot bug befor i had to sell a bunsh of trade ships as they were stuck there not doing anything.
That's a different bug. In this one, you have no control of those ships, they just basically exist as numbers on navy outgoings. You can't even sell/move/whatever the ships.
ah befor if i took 1 ship from a fleet in the trade spot i could not move the fleet left or put them back on the trade spot but i could sell them just nothing elce
All the people complaining that everything hasn't been fixed in a week is slightly annoying though. It's hardly like you could do it better.
I wish in got a week to fix any mistakes I made in my line of work and I doubt they can do better than me in that.
Argument is rather defunct.

Frankly that is pretty impressive. They took an annoying bug and managed to make it even worse. Hats off CA . :laugh4:
Reminds me when I played Spore when that came out. That had a serious bug in it which made it crash, it was totally random and there was no auto_save feature. It really did hurt.
Yeah, just look at that British fleet, going "LOL@U" and stealing my trade spot. Damn, gits.
A warning for everyone having a (localised) german version of the game. Todays patch breaks the game so that any land or sea battle results in a crash to desktop after loading.
Happend to me and judging from various german speaking ETW forums it occurs to all/almost all german language players. ~:(
No idea if other language versions are affected as well.

Yeah I think I got it...I love the patch process (so easy) except for the fact that I'm so used to having to go to a mirror site, etc. that it seems TOO easy. That's why I'm wondering "Is that it?". It took like 5 seconds when I restarted Steam.
For the record - A Steam client update was just released this hour. So anyone who starts Steam - expect to have to restart it after it installs the update. (This is separate from the ETW update today).

I´ve had the german-version-patch-bug and Haudegen from this forum experienced it, too. A possible workaround in these days (until the problem is hotfixed) is to uninstall the game and install the english version. This is working for Haudegen so far. Today evening I will test this myself.
Don´t know but I think CA has not even tried to test the other language patch versions. :inquisitive:

Some Steam/Patch questions:
Any way to find out what your current version number of the game is?
One poster has said Steam doesn't use version numbers. If true, ... no, surely it can't be true. How on earth are we supposed to know if a patch has been applied or not? How can we sensibly discuss what (possibly different) versions we all have without language to do that? How can modders control what version their mods are being applied to? How can we downgrade (or decide not to upgrade) if it turns out that a patch makes things worse? Speaking of that last one:
Has the patch (of 10 or 11 March) made things worse?
Is it save game compatible?
Sorry to repeat a question others have asked :embarassed:
Can I roll back (downgrade) to an earlier version on Steam?
I'm beginning to think that the Steam philosophy is to allow no control to users at all, so I'm guessing the answer will be no. But if so, that really stinks.
My first plan to get round this if the answer is no was to make a complete copy of the Steam folder in C:\Program Files, then connect to get the patch and try it out. If it is worse, go offline (and stay offline) and swap the new & original Steam folders. But I wouldn't bet against Steam using some other mechanisms to control what I have or what it thinks I have, and it wouldn't surprise me if this plan just led to a messed up installation.
<rant mode on>
Why, after large parts of the history of Microsoft has provided proof that it has the opposite effect to the one intended, do software companies deliberately take away information and functionality from users, on the basis that they know better than we do what we want.

They have stated because that its steam, they will keep everything save game compatible. So unless they go all out with major changes, save games will work.
As for version numbers. Steam does make them obsolete. You argue on behalf of modders...well, too bad? It will work fine.
Luckily I didn't buy the german version and ordered from the UK, also luckily that means I will apparently only get my game once it's fully patched because it still isn't here. Oh wait, i mentioned that before didn't I? Obviously it's driving me nuts! :wall:

Ah. Great. I wondered how to do that. It seems to vary from game to game. RTW requires a Ctrl + Esc while FM09 and EVE only need the windows button pressing.
Very useful. Thanks.

Does steam automatically install the patch? I don't remember downloading it or seeing any update notice from steam, but I can alt+tab out of game now so I'm thinking its been installed, but then on turn 21 I declare war on hurons and game crashes. As long as you haven't changed the update settings to tell it not to keep the game updated automatically, you more than likely wont have even noticed that the patch has been applied. Should be completely behind the scenes, especially if you leave Steam running in the background, and have had your computer on for a while.

Anyone know if the patch now supports the latest Nvidia driver ?
RTW requires a Ctrl + Esc:inquisitive: Alt + Tab worked fine in Rome:Total War for me.
Anyone know if the patch now supports the latest Nvidia driver ?The question should probably be addressed to Nvidia as to when they will have drivers that properly support ETW.
If something worked ok in earlier drivers but is broken in newer drivers its because Nvidia changed something & their responsibility to fix it. (unless CA did something very wierd with their code)

In that linked thread from the Shogun someone said that there isn't multithreading support yet and that they expect a patch for that in couple of months. Is that right? That would explain why I can't play the game, then, if that's correct, since if the game's only using a single core then I'm a little below the minimum spec--I was hoping it'd use both and push me over the bar. Is CA blissfully unaware that most computers sold in the last few years are dual core?:furious3: The irony is that my old computer had a faster single core but I "upgraded" to dual.

I noticed with some multi-threaded (Total War) games that they seem to use all available cores but it seems like they use only 50% total of both cores on a dual core and around 25% of the total available power on a quad core(based on a screenshot I saw elsewhere from a guy playing ETW on his quad core).
If that is true then the game is multithreaded but still only effectively uses the power a single core would provide. I noticed that in M2TW as well and I think the ETW demo also showed this kind of behaviour. Of course if that is true, the game could really use a fix, maybe someone wants to test this as I don't have ETW yet and deleted the demo already. :sweatdrop:

I've got a quad core, and E:TW definitely uses all 4 cores, but is by no means exercising them to their full capacity. Makes me wonder where my slowdown is coming from, when I've got a fairly current graphics card too (Geforce 260, 216 series). :dizzy2:

That sounds very wrong Shadow_Wolf. I'd look into that.
I got a quad core, it doesn't use them all to 100% at any time, and it hardly uses any of my 8gig of ram. Though since the new patch, I got a few saved games doing CTD :(
Well, what I thought was when you have a quad core, does the overall usage of all cores combined stay at roughly 25%?

For thsoe complaining about not full CPU utilization, more is not better. The idea range is 50-75. Otherwise the CPU starts to choke because it can't handle sudden load increases and random background stuff.
