View Full Version : Catch the Thief [Concluded]

I'm bored. Sue me..
Anyway, I had an idea for a small game.
Basic Rules:
We need 3-4 players. ! Thief(:mask:) and 2-3 Policemen(:policeman::bobby::bobby2:).
This game will be played in a table format(See example below).
The Thief must get the "treasure" and the Policemen must capture the Thief.
From FPS games - NO BASE CAMPING!
Starting positions will be sent to me via PM.
The Thief must send it's move orders to me via PM. His smilie is not shown on map unless Policemen is 2 squares away from him(must have a clear sight). Policemen will move their smilies themselves.
The Thief can move up-down, left-right and diagonally. Policemen can move only up-down and left right.
One of the Policemen will be Chief and he can place 3-4 alarm systems. If Thief steps on one of them his position is revealed.
If Thief catches the "treasure" and manages to escape he will win. If Policemen catch the Thief they will win.
To catch a Thief, Policemen have to enter the same square where the Thief is or successfully surround the Thief and prevent him moving.

So, anyone up to this? :clown:
Edit: If this is not appropriate game for Gameroom then feel free to move it!

That's interesting; could take a while to play as there will be a large number of moves, presumably. I'd be willing to play.
Centurion1
07-19-2009, 18:08
Im willing to play. Its a novel idea, what would turn lengths be like?
Ibn-Khaldun
07-19-2009, 18:13
If we can fill all the roles soon and all players are online then turn will last as long as all Policemen have made their moves and Thief have sent me PM with his moves. Otherwise we should go with 12-24 hours a turn.
If you like to join then which character would you like to be?
@ATPG, If Thief at the start of the game places himself right next to Policemen then .. the game will not last long! :clown:

Just commeting on the game:
It sounds very familiar to a certain board game I used to play a decade or two ago. Was also about a thief needing to get past policemen in a museum who could put down alarms etc. Forgot the name, loved it.

Askthepizzaguy
07-21-2009, 17:47
From the placement of the alarms and the starting positions of the police, I'm not sure it's even possible to win the game. I think I can even prove it.
Since the pillars block off access to the mask on the north and south, and the police occupy east and west, and they have access to the diagonal squares, all they would have to do is move back and forth and they automatically win.
Can anyone refute that?
Centurion1
07-21-2009, 17:54
I dont believe you can move diagonally in this game. i think you could manage to worm your way out. i can see one path.... (not that i am going to tell you)
Askthepizzaguy
07-21-2009, 18:00
I can move diagonally.
It might be possible for me to escape however if the policemen are stationed to the east and west of the mask it is impossible to take it and flee.
It takes one turn to move into one of the squares surrounding the mask.
It takes one turn to capture the mask.
It takes one turn to move away from the mask towards the exit.
The police can cover those squares in 2 turns. On one turn, they cover the east and west squares, and on the next turn they can see the thief, and capture him if he lands on the mask or an adjacent square. That would make the game unwinnable.
A Very Super Market
07-21-2009, 18:06
Yeah, but we need to keep moving. You can outmaneuvre us.
Centurion1
07-21-2009, 18:23
Exactly no one is requiring you to make your move the very first turn. you can retreat and move in for the kill a second time. plus we aren't allowed to camp we Have to move one space
Askthepizzaguy
07-21-2009, 18:34
It might have been possible without the pillars there, but there is no way to take the mask and then escape.
As it stands, you have a mate in one if I move anywhere but directly north or directly northeast. You have a mate in four if I move directly north. I believe you have a mate in three if I move directly northeast.
1. anywhere besides north or northeast: adjacent policeman captures thief.
2. ATPG moves north:
Centurion moves east, AVSM moves north.
Only legal ATPG move: east.
Centurion moves east, AVSM moves south.
IF ATPG moves east, Centurion moves east, AVSM moves east.
Only legal ATPG move: south
Centurion moves east, AVSM moves east with mate in one.
3. ATPG moves northeast:
Centurion moves east, AVSM moves east.
IF ATPG moves southwest towards the mask,
Centurion moves east, AVSM moves west to guard the mask and block off escape routes, and mate in one to follow.
IF ATPG moves east,
Centurion moves east, AVSM moves east with mate to follow. As soon as ATPG is either on the top-right or one below the top-right square, it is impossible to escape due to the policemen controlling the top two squares on column 6 and the last two squares of the middle row. All escape routes are blocked and mate to follow in two.
Also, due to the pillar configuration, as I said, no matter where the thief starts, the policemen starting on the squares east and west of the mask, presumably with alarms diagonal from the mask (not that they are even required), a simple shuffling back and forth to their original squares prevents the required four moves to take the mask and escape from the mask square and the six squares surrounding it. At the starting position, this is a solved game for the policemen.
FactionHeir

As per what I wrote to the host:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1484
That is more balanced I think  (manual on wikipedia/hasbro)
The current setup does seem a bit unfair. If the police had to choose who moves rather than both move, it would be fairer maybe.
Ibn-Khaldun
07-21-2009, 19:38
I think it would've been much simpler if ATPG would've started on A3 square while policemen would've started where they did.
ATPG, as I understand You gave up?
FactionHeir, thank you for sending me that link!
We could start all over with a bigger room and with some changes in the rules?
Askthepizzaguy
07-21-2009, 23:40
The size of the board and starting position do not matter so long as the two pillars adjacent to the mask and the two policemen remain. Because of those factors the game is solved for the policemen, meaning there is a solution (already posted) to winning the game which cannot be refuted.
Ibn-Khaldun
07-21-2009, 23:48
If that map problem will be solved in a larger map and with edited rules will you try again?
Though, with edited rules there should be more Policemen.
Askthepizzaguy
07-22-2009, 00:09
The other thing; you should only be able to see the thief if he is directly adjacent, not two squares away. In order to give the policemen a genuine challenge, it actually needs to be tough to figure out where the thief is. Remembering that the thief has a square that he must absolutely reach, and a square that he must absolutely leave on, that is enough of a handicap. the size of the map will have no meaning if there are 3 policemen. The additional cop would cover two squares next to the mask, which is what the two pillars are doing. Basically you're trading one impossible win position for another.
I'd be willing to prove it to you by playing on the side of the policeman with 3 police. Boy I sound like a whiner, don't I? I'm just saying; the policemen should not be able to cover every square surrounding the mask in one move, because it takes 4 moves to enter the 3*3 box around the mask, get to the center, and then leave it. Having the policemen cover all the squares means it is still impossible for the thief to devise a strategy to win.
The real secret to this game is that the policemen don't have to catch the thief at all, they simply need to cover all the squares around the mask. If they can do that, and they do, then the thief cannot win and the game is solved.
Ibn-Khaldun
07-22-2009, 00:16
No, you don't sound a whiner. :beam:
I actually expected things to go wrong with the first one. Now, when I know where the problems were I can fix them and probably the next attempt will be a lot better.

This game is ready for sign ups again!
Rules
Game needs 3-5 players! Thief and 2-4 Policemen.
This game will be played in a table format.
The Thief must get the "treasure" and the Policemen must capture the Thief. If Thief catches the "treasure" and manages to escape he will win. If Policemen catch the Thief they will win.
To catch a Thief, Policemen have to enter the same square where the Thief is or successfully surround the Thief and prevent him moving.
Everyone will send their starting positions to me via PM.
The Thief must send a PM every turn with his move orders. His smiley is not shown on map unless Policeman is on adjacent square(must have a clear sight).
The Thief can move vertically, horizontally and diagonally. Policemen can move only vertically and horizontally.
One of the Policemen will be Chief and he can place 4 Alarm Systems(AS) or 2 AS and 1 Security Camera. If Thief steps on one of the Alarm Systems his position is revealed.
Thief can twice in game test the square he moves. If Alarm System is on that square it will be disabled by the Thief automatically and his position will not be revealed.
Once during the game the Chief can order two Policemen to move in the same turn.
Security Cameras spotting range is 2 squares. It must be placed either on wall or on pillar. All security measures can be switched off from Security Switchboard(SSB). Policeman must be in the same square with SSB in order to control whether security measures are on/off.
Policeman and Thief have max 24 hours to send me their move orders. The faster they send their orders the faster the game will move on.
When Thief have captured the "treasure" then Policemen can lock the exits if they stand in the same square where the exits are.

Thanks, I just figured there'd be no other place to put em. Though I was somewhat concerned about alarms at the top exit as pever wasn't really guarding it, which is why I didn't escape via that route (besides realizing that even if I did, pever would get there faster than I - but he didn't move much at first)
Mistake visible at T5, that shouldve been diagonal, not just right.
