I'm second from the right, next to the girl with a perfectly green and non-poisonous Cactus cider, I think. Really was an awesome night. Felt like Barney Stinson all evening in my suit and bow-tie (which is in my pocket at the time of the photo). ;D

Its hard to keep track of the general ebb and flow of this game. Some general reports would be nice. On a related note, you bastards killed my Imamate after only 7 turns! :D Admittedly it looks like it was already being attacked by its backstabbing neighbours :clown: by the beginning.

It's good to know you are still following the game! Sorry for the lack of progress reports - it's a little difficult to do that as the game is so adversarial, but I'll try to knock something up after my exam is out of the way.
Oman was attacked well before the end of CotF, we just didn't kill it off completely until some way into this game. Of course if you had still been around it would never have happened.

since i havent really contributed to the story section i want to review the things that happened so far here.
When I took over the Rajputs they already were ready to strike so I continued where my predecessor left off which meant moving my armies to the western front which at this time basically was Afghanistan.
In the beginning things werent going that well. My attempts to get into a hurry up offence and rush westwards were blocked my Phonics right in the beginning. He defeated me double digits several times and I was basically stuck straight there where I took over. I neither gained ground, nor defeated any army not to mention the conquering of any settlement instead I suffered major losses.
The tide was turning when my spies were capable to open a fort where Phonics fortified his northern army. The army was annihilated and my forces finally were able to brake through. For some unknown reason he didnt leave any units in the city of Torbal which I consequently could take at ease. The very same round I destroyed his entire eastern catapult forces what then enabled me to fortify my gained positions. Afghanistan had been conquered.
Due to the pretty worthless units and early major losses my armies had been depleted pretty much though so my offence came to halt. In a daring attempt to rush forward I combined my remaining cavalry forces into one army and rushed westwards.
The next decisive moment was when due to my spies I was capable to destroy another major Caliphate army with this very cavalry troop. Three family members and the last catapult in the region had been destroyed. It was also the moment when – imo – Phonics decided to stop any offensive movement in this region and draw back on defensive positions mainly. I guess that is due to the fact that my spies are pretty much able to open any fort so without chance to fortify in the field things get pretty difficult. So not engaging my positions might be the right decision.
That is even more true since the very same round my Mongol reinforcements arrived at the eastern front. Some recon forces I d send out had been able to conquer the castle of Shajan which also had no garrison whysoever. (This was Zims settlement though. Just for the records of leaving no garrision.) The next round the main forces arrived and conquered Zanji. The Rajput and Mongol forces united and are now stationed around Bam which has been conquered last round.. Due to the early defeats and my disregard of swift reinforcement from India the Rajputs are pretty much on halt now however. Thanks to the Mongols this part of the front is stable though.
As for the Mongols... The fact that I havent fought any battle on the field yet somehow gives away what has been happening so far. Due to the fact that the Mongol troops are limited I have to choose my battles carefully and cant rush straight ahead although I d like to. However I cant risk to experience another battle of Atrak.
The Mongols started off pretty well. When I took over the entire forces were stationed in Turkmenistan mainly and due to the siege equipment I was able to clear the field in that region pretty fast and secure my positions there. I then split my forces into two army groups to attack the Seljuks in the west the Caliphate in the south.
The first army group was rushing towards Iran were I was hopping to establish a strong position in the north then split it and manoeuvre one brigade eastwards to get in the back of the Caliphate forces in Afghanistan and the other westwards to get into striking position on Baghdad. Although I was able to conquer Yazd I had to withdrawal later due to the Mameluks expedition force of six armies which was moving northwards into Iran from the south. I could not risk another major battle like the now legendary Battle of Atrak River so I had to fall back on defensive positions which even meant the lost of Yazd.
The second army group was meant to rush to the Caspian Sea, make its move along the shore and finally rush southwards to the very west of Iran where it should have united with the western brigade of the southern army group which on its part should have left southern Iran behind and move along the very north of the Iranian Highland. The ultimate goal was to attempt a swift attack on Baghdad. Yet I had to skip those plans due to the battle of Atrak River.
When the battle took place I was gathering my forces around Atrak River waiting for the siege equipment to close up. The next round those troops were meant to strike westwards and reach the Caspian Sea. Yet this did not happen.
In a bold attempt to stop the Mongol offensive Quirl the Mongol Slaughter attacked the entire northern army group (see the story section for more detail) and succeeded. I didnt see that coming and although in the end the Seljuks lost the battle the Mongols lost about two armies too which is a lot! This was the moment when I had to change my overall strategy to a less offensive one. Risking more such battles to happen sooner or later would have meant the defeat of the Mongols.
Due to the new strategy the Mongols are now pretty much on halt advancing only carefully. Just the armies I deployed to the east are engaging in military action.
The main front now is Iran which probably is the worst terrain ever. It is like a one way mountain road. Furthermore its heavily fortified. Lets see how things will develop there...
Yeah. You pretty much summed it up, man! For my part, I waited about 12 turns just to get up to Iran. Now, I have to play hide-and-seek with you Mongols! :P At least I was able to take out that large Rajput navy on my own... there's SOME action.
Yeah, the Caliphate has been just trying to wait you out. We'll see who wins at this waiting game now!
I'm looking forward to more of your AARs, man. :D

man all those AAAAs make me think u ve been in serious pain. the ass dagger? told u man… dont do anything drastic…
anyways… the grand iran campaign has begun. mongolian forces have been invading the iranian mainland at large. two army groups successfully attacked caliphate positions and cities in northern and eastern iran. the caliphate crown princes fell during combat operations alongside several generals.
while mongolian forces in northern iran brake through the caliphate defense and are now pushing towards the city of kerman the southern forces reached the waters of the persian gulf cutting of the very eastern front and are now preparing to launch an attack on the remaining caliphate positions clearing up any outstanding resistance in the region. with swift assaults in the north and east the invasion of the iranian heartland is about to begin.

ok deguerra, you asked for it and you got it.
here it is, The Story so Far:
- The Fourth Caliphate had hardly been formed when the news came from the far east that a horde of eastern marauders had been sighted in the deserts of Khwarezm.
- The worst fears of all were confirmed when the invaders attacked and massacred the Seljuk city of Samarqand, beginning a war with the nations of the Fourth Caliphate and the Indian Rajput Princes.
- The initial wave of Mongol Invaders pushed into Ghazni lands, meeting little resistance as they conquered first the plains, and then the mountains of Afghanistan. The Shah’s capital, the fortress of Ghazni fell to the invaders provoking much sorrow in the lands of the faithful.
- So successful and swift was the Mongol advance that the Rajput Princes sued for peace with the invader, becoming their vassal and an enemy of the nations of the Fourth Caliphate.
- Then began the second stage of the conflict, where the Mongols divided their forces into two arms. One arm was sent around the Caspian Sea to strike at Seljuk-held Georgia and Azerbaijan, while the other assaulted the Seljuk front door at Merv.
- Meanwhile the nations of the Fourth Caliphate began an extensive recruitment and fortification drive, securing their lands against attack.
- The Rajput princes invaded Ghazni from the east, pushing as far as Zanji and Saravan but leaving the capital Gwadar.
- The Seljuks heroically held out against the Mongol advance in Georgia, finally defeating the invading force after many battles and the loss of thousands of lives.
- The Mongols were more successful in their frontal push, taking Merv and advancing as far as Nishapur.
- The city of Birjand, strategically placed between the Seljuk and Caliphate lands to the west, the Mongol-held north and the Rajput-held former Ghazni lands, became the focal point for a fierce series of confrontations between the invaders and the Fourth Caliphate forces.
- With Birjand re-taken and the Northern passage secure, the Caliph’s armies began a counter-offensive in Rajput-held Ghazni, retaking Zanji and Saravan and winning success after success as they pushed the front back past Turbat to the mountains of the Hindu Kush west of the city of Quetta.
- With the Mongols having received reinforcements from the east and their troops massing at Nishapur, the Seljuks make a fateful decision which leads to the Battle of Atrak River and the now-legendary death of the Six Atabegs, who take their place in the annals of Islamic history as heroes and martyrs to the ummah.
- This reversal, albeit minor for the Mongols, provokes a change of strategy and the invading hordes pause in their advance while they wait for a further wave of reinforcements.
- The peace does not last long and soon the Mongols have advanced again, this time in concert with the Rajputs who reinvade the lands of Ghazni.
- Soon all that had been gained by the Caliphate counter-offensive has been lost once more, with Zanji and Saravan, Turbat, Bam, Birjand, Kerman and Yazd, Hormuz and Chabahar falling to the invaders who have now pushed all the way to the Persian Gulf.
It's also in the first post of this thread. I'll try to keep this updated every now and again, and I'll also try to find the time to add some links into the text to stories which provide more detail of the action.

im out of words now. 4h of fighting being unable to save and knowing that this thing might crash any second and all the work being worth nothing is kinda nerv racking. i ll try to put a story together and put in some of the screen shots i took later. so far caliphate next
Oh. Great. We're dead I'm guessing? Oh well... at least this sludge fest might end. :P

nah i dont think the 4th caliphate is dead already u guys still can recruit new units and there are still troops left in the region. if i remember it correctly one entire army of u managed to escape unharmed Quirl. this might have been a strategic victory but the war isnt over yet i figure. the seljuks are advancing again and definitely will have to be checked. so this aint over yet. the caliphates position in iran however is pretty much weakened
well how do i embed pictures like u guys did in the story section? i dont seem to be able to just upload it
Nah. It's over. I can't recruit anymore armies. I'm so far in the hole its retarded. Frankly, we never really stood a chance anyways. Oh well. I don't really have time for hotseats anymore anyhow. Kinda glad this one will be wrapped up around the time I'll be wrapping up LotE. :P

I guess I could afford to recruit new armies after you vanquish my current ones, but even if we summoned up a new resistance we would need 30-40 stacks to defeast the seven of yours, or something like that. By the time we would have eventually worn your forces out, you would be at Jerusalem and Constantinople. So I say this game is up. Well played SS, but the end-result has pretty much been inevitable all along.

Well it sounds like it's time to declare the Mongols the winner!
Well played Silvershield, and The Lemongate before him! Congratulations!
And well played all the allies of the Fourth Caliphate: barcamartin, Quirl al-Mustafa Mubarak, Zim and for a time Ramses II CP.
This was fun - however I can hardly believe it's over after all this time. Commanders of the Faithful started way back in 2008...
My Caliph Suleyman just died of old age this turn so it's an appropriate point for the new Caliph to change policy and offer vassalage to the Great Khan. Silver, will you accept that? If so I'll write a couple of stories to wrap things up, after you post your story about the great battle of Iran in which the Mamluks were destroyed...
well how do i embed pictures like u guys did in the story section? i dont seem to be able to just upload it
You have to upload the pic to a hosting site (like photobucket) and then put the link in [IMG] code
I can't wait to see your story!
Wow! This is over too! Man, LotE is coming to and end and now this?! Well, maybe we can start up another hotseat soonish. It's been fun. Let's all chat and pick a mod to play sometime soon my brothers. :D
I should be less busy in the coming weeks...

Thanks for the game guys! Although I must admit I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as CotF, it was a brand new idea, with a completely different type of play. Basically, the feeling of hopelessness and boredom won over enjoyment and excitement in this game, for me anyhow. But it had its moments, and it was interesting to see how very superior the Mongols really are in BC, especially in a player's hands. Again, thanks, we gave it our all anyway. :)

This would be better in BC2 where the Mongols have had their stats rejigged so that they are closer to the strength of the other factions.
I admit when I started this game I had not encountered the Mongols in a BC campaign and hadn't experienced their might first-hand - neither did I realise that they received so many reinforcements.
Still, I think we had our moments in this game and we can't blame anyone for our tactics but ourselves - perhaps if we had been more aggressive we could have seized the initiative. I think the key moment to do that was probably after Atrak...in a straight fight we still would have lost, but there's a lot to be said for psychological momentum...
The other unbalancing factor was the fact that the Rajputs had no siege equipment..once they (rightly) were allowed to use spies my eastern front just crumbled..
Silver, you played well! And thanks for rescuing this game and allowing us to play it out to its conclusion!
In RP terms I am quite pleased with the outcome - waaaay back when I made my very first story post for CotF (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?100395-In-the-Lands-of-the-Faithful-BC-Hotseat-Story-Thread&p=1872529&viewfull=1#post1872529) I anticipated the fall of the Caliphate to the Mongols...those whirlwinds are the 15 mongol starting stacks...
I think the thing that unbalanced the Mongols the most was how far they could move on the campaign map (about twice as far as any of our own generals). We just couldn't keep pace. That was the thing that frustrated me the most. :/

Well I d liked to see Baghdad fall but I think it s fair enough call it an end now. There is no need for any humiliation sort of thing in game since it really has been close so far.
The Mongols do accept vassalage of the Caliphate.
Well first of all thanks for having me. I really enjoyed this. Each of you had been a great opponent in the game. You all really gave me some brain wracking moments and put up a great fight. I m sure there are things each and anyone of you will remember. Especially since you guys had been playing your factions in the predecessor already. For me there surly will be some pleasant memories… I especially will remember the vibe when I took over in the beginning of March. There was this freshness and excitement and everyone was amped up sort of thing. Kinda sad it went down a bit the last weeks but I do understand that this thing wasnt that exciting for you guys anymore. But anyways I definitely will remember this feeling of awakening in early March the most.
Of course the ending somehow was inevitable. Unless the Mongols are ruled by an idiot it s hard not to be victorious. However the sudden annihilation of the Mameluk forces and of parts of the Caliphs own troops somehow put a too sudden end to it somehow. If I wouldnt have been able to crush the Caliphate main forces this turn it could still have become quite tricky. Yet in the end the outcome nevertheless would have been the same - the sooner or later. With the Rajput reinforcements arriving within the next 2 or 3 turns things certainly would have turned once and for all. Talking three half size armies of elephants and 3 or 4 main armies of infantry which although quite worthless would have worn down the Caliphate main forces so they wouldnt have posed a severe threat to my Mongol armies anymore even though you guys would have been the attacker. The Rajputs furthermore would have landed straight at the front door of Baghdad bringing with them all the 8 and 9 talent spies and lots of money to build numerous forts and recruit endless mercenaries. So yes the fall of the Caliphate somehow was inevitable. The Great Dominion of the East has rise above all. (I really should have insisted more on the Dominion of the East thing. I really liked this idea.)
Of course there where some majors odds in my favour that somehow come along with the Mongols the way they are set up in Broken Crescent.
Quirl mentioned the enormous movement range. No matter how much you guys would have tried to get my back I d always outmanoeuvred you – as I successfully did. So yes the movement range was definitely the biggest advantage.
Of course the strengths of the Mongols was another major aspect. The fact that I killed six main armies with one army of my own losing only half of its size in six battles somehow does tell a lot.
The reason that the things developed the way they did also root in the uneven spy situation. As you rightfully mentioned Phonics, the very eastern front collapsed due to the fact that you couldnt defend probably against the spies anymore since you earlier on agreed on not using spies so yeah that definitely put me ahead.
As for the strategy of the 4th Caliphate. I think there was one big mistake you guys made and that was to withdrawal the Mameluk forces from the very eastern front straight into Iran. That pretty much was a door opener not just to eastern Iran but also to ending this game altogether. From that point you d pretty much been trapped inside Iran.
After all I think being more aggressive might have been a better strategy. Pushing me into battles by sieging my cities might could have been a way to wear me down. Although the Mongols certainly would have destroyed any army still any battle would also have cost Mongol troops. Such a war of wearout however is quite expansive and you might not have been able to recruit troops as fast as they d been crushed.
Maybe advancing on different fronts like you just did Barca would have been a good idea.
(Quite remarkable btw that the outpost of GhaZim lasted until the end. I guess you really did a good job there in this battle Zim.)
Finally the fact that the battles had been human vs computer did break the neck of the Caliphate. The outcome of the Great Seven Battles - as I like to call them - being auto resolved would have been quite different. I m definitely in favour of auto resolve battles since this does soften the effects of a battle where the human is the attacker. Although the outcome of these battles can be strange too and obviously puts other unites in advantage as we d seen in Lords of the East with Civics elephants. However at the end of an autoresolve battle armies do at least not get totally annihilated so the punishment for not being cautious enough and allowing your opponent to force a battle on you is softened. However as you mentioned earlier on Phonics the Mongols then would have had a big disadvantage since they do rely heavily on horse archers and bow units.
No matter what I did have a great time and I guess you guys did as well no matter the outcome and the sudden ending.
The Mongols – the whirlwinds of the step…
Altright I ll try to put on the screen shots now.
Since story writing isnt my strong suit really this will be more like a field report I guess but maybe you guys can make use of some of the information in one of the stories you might want to come up with. I definitely would be looking forward to reading about the end of the Caliphate in a more poetic way than the field report I m going to put up.

Good analysis Silver, I agree with a lot of what you said there, and I'm glad you enjoyed the game!
One thing I disagree on though is autoresolve - try it out for yourself, you'll see that these Mongols rule in autoresolve as well as on the battle field..
Looking forward to your story!

well in this case auto resolving would be the way to go i think. this would have prevented the complete annihilation of the mameluk forces. anyways...
writing and editing and photo doing this stuff is almost as exhausting as the battles themselves so i ll continue this later

Glad you liked the story - I was sad for Suleyman and I wanted him to find peace after all the hardship he faced in his life. I hope you find Tariq's end fitting to, and not too depressing...an old man drifts off by the fire, it's not so bad right?
Well I have updated the first post with the progress report and the announcement of victory, so there's just one thing left for me to do which is write a little epilogue I've been thinking about for a while..might get to that in a few days, in the meantime feel free to post any thoughts, reminiscences etc here..
