Hey I got the title right this time!
Ahem, anyway, this is the thread for the second part of a game of politics in the 1980's. The first game, which can be found here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=119203), bombed due to the rules being too complex for me, lack of co-ordination between me and my writeup... er, guy and just general lazyness on my part. I cant do much about the latter because, well, I'm a lazy person, but, I am going to try to keep the other hampers of the last part of the game from repeating, or at least make sure that the game is fun.
Firstly I dont want any new recruits, It took me two weeks to do the role pms for 15 countries and I dont want to go through that again, you can replace players that have quit or do quit in the future but thats about it. Secondly dont point out that I havent explained what this game is, this isnt a proper sequel and the players allready know how to play the game.
Heres the recap from the timeskip:
October-December 1981: The Sino-Russian war rages on chinese advance into eastern russia is halted as most of the troops were sent to try to evict the russian invasion of the southern Chinese coast. The Chinese troops sent to attack Moscow arrive and a war of attrition is fought in its streets as the russians cut them off from the middle east supply depots.
A british sleeper cell in moscow becomes active and detonates a 300KT bomb under the west wing of the kremlin. No-one was hurt and very little important was destroyed however as the entire facility had been evacuated to lenningrad when china attacked. The newly restored British army attacks the blockaded Russians. They take most of the western half of south africa and Russian and British squadrons engage around the Cape of Good Hope, each trying to cut off the others supply lines.
Czechoslovakia and West germany surrenders to their respective former allies.
The west german government is forcebly retired and the replacements are staunch NATO supporters only.
Warsaw is more harsh in its punishment; the czechoslovakian politicians are executed and half of its land and civillians are absorbed into the neigbouring countries.
Result: Sino-Russian war is stagnating and the British are slowly pushing the Russians out of South africa. Czechoslovakia has been castrated and the occuping NATO forces are still sitting in West Germany.
1982:
Chinese take moscow in May and turn it into a Fortress; Mines, hidden anti-tank troops, machine gun turrets etc are deployed. Russians in response sit their armies outside the city and make fake attacks and slowly trick the besiged chinese into wasting most of the ammunition. Chinese forces try multiple times to raid the russian countryside for food and russian depots for ammo and fuel but are dismayed as the russians have harvested and burned nearby farms and that any russian ordinance they find are unuseable with Chinese firearms. When the Russians truely attack in November they find that a quarter of the army has starved and over three quarters of the remainders had allready fled the city into the countryside some time ago mainly during the attempted farm raids.
Iran and Pakistan after being Embargo'd along with the rest of the NAP by russia joins in the war on china's side in Febuary and they kick the Russians out of southern china freeing the remaining Chinese to start the northern offensive anew. The war in South Africa ended after the Russians withdraw their troops to help fend off the new combatants and Britain reclaimed the country. Just like history the Argentinians invaded the falkland islands in April 1982 and like history the were driven off. Unlike history however an allready enraged Britain decided to send the Argentinian sea trade back 3 Millennia by bombing and shelling every port in the Argentinan coast. They did such a thorough job that the american astronauts said they were able to see the craters from space.
1983:
At the start of the year Iran, Pakistan and China renewed the northern war and pushed the Russian forces further back to the point that mongolia was completely encircled by the Chinese. The anti MEC, now Anti NAP, were brought into the war in May by promises of high grade weapons from russia and the middle eastern war restarted with the Egyptian, Arabian and Syrian armies moving into the lands previously occupied by the chinese troops sent to moscow. This act forced Iran and Pakistan to withdraw from China removing their numerical advantage and moving the Northern line back south.
After America threatened that they would join in on the side of China if they resisted, Russia was forced to withdraw all claims on east germany and let it rejoin with the West to form a Central Germany under NATO's jurisdiction. It is unknown if it the Warsaw pact will accept it in the long run but as the Americans were quick to point out; "those Russian sucker's cant do a thing about it".
1984:
A deadly chapter in the Sino-Russian war started. The United kingdom invaded the Russian controled Sakhalin island opening a third front. Due to Russia allready being overstretched as it is warsaw was called into the war and polish, hungarian romanian and the small amount of czechoslovakian troops were deployed to the front lines and entered a war of attrition as warsaw and the Royal navy battled over the arctic islands with many ships and troops on both sides being lost to not only the enemy but the cold.
1985: There have been many powers over the years. Many have risen many have fallen but few have ever made the effort to become a superpower. In the last 5 years the power that is known as india has made such an effort and has now risen to be the 5th World Superpower its economy had exploded and its industry had boomed its nuclear program has been sucessfull and it after 5 years of work it has become one of the big boys. Both the NAP and the Warsaw pact had weakened after 3 and 1/2 years of non stop violence and it has left them bloodied and destitute. Fighting a seemingly never ending standoff has taken its toll and when on 1985 India declared its demands that both sides will stand down and restore things to the status quo the war or be destroyed they had no choice but to count their blessings and declare a draw.
The war between Warsaw and China's allies had ended. The United kingdom and the Middle east coalition, relatively unharmed by war in comparison to the others, were not perturbed by the threats of the subcontinent and only declared peace after India forced the Chinese to restore the lands taken in the Middle east and the Russians to surrender Sahkalin, Severny and Yuzhny Islands to the Royal Navy. Seeing the British takeover of stratiegic posictions in the arctic the Americans offered Britain its old position in Nato in exchange for the permission to position Air and Naval bases on them. Seeing as the USSR would most likely try to destroy the United kingdom if they didnt have a powerfull ally when Russia's strength was restored, Britain accepted the alliance.
1986:
The Eastern Continent starts to rebuild from the war.
Tibetian rebels, seeing the weakness in China's military, attempt a full on rebellion for Tibet's freedom but due to the entire continent being reluctant to start another war in Asia support is minimal. The rebelion stagnates as the Chinese are unable to find and kill all the rebels and the rebels have difficulty accumilating enough weaponry to do much damage.
1987
Russia and China both report a 50% resoration of thier country and Russia pettitions the UN to force the UK to return the Sahkalin Island, the pettition fails. The USA, being the only world wide superpower at full strength, demand the Chinese and Russians to surrender and send their nuclear arsenals to the USA. China and Russia take it badly.
http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/3/30655/611718-nuke_super.jpg
Just kidding.
In essence during the first half of the 1980's the World went to hell and back as russia and china each showed mankinds progess in killing the man next door without the use of nuclear arms.

I'm not sure its accurate and I've probably missed afew names or mislabled a country, anyway dont mae a fuss just tell me and I'll fix it.
Main changes from the old game:
1. We are dropping the whole economy system from the start, so no dicking around.
2. I am actually going to be doing the writeups.
3. If there is a mistake and we catch a mistake within 3 days I will correct it no matter the amount of work that needs modifying. Believe it or not but the Host isnt allways right.
4. Change 3 wont be accepted as an excuse to moan about the mistakes of the last game.

Also Greyblades, will our Role PM's be changing at all?
Could we have an updated list of who is who and if they are part of NATO/Warsaw/Non-aligned/Other ? Thank you.

From what I gather, NATO and Warsaw are both at Status quo (Czechoslovakia is rather messed up though), while India is it's own faction. The NAP is Pakistan, Iran, and China.
Is Turkey a part of the MEC now? Somalia is back to anarchy.
Greyblades

Turkey went back into nato so it could use the position to get its land back from china.

Sorry, I won't be playing as I'm a tad busy right now... And I'm already killing my self by playing Bleach Shippuden.
If I'm lucky, I could start playing from 29th but if not, I won't be able to play till early November.
I'm glad this showed up as the top thread in the forum. I'm not a gameroom regular so I might have missed it a couple days otherwise. :beam:
Nice to see India did ok during the timeskip, although they suddenly seem very alone... :sweatdrop:
I saw a mention of my activity in the last game with two rather different perspectives mentioned. I turned in a lot of orders and did a fair amount of diplomacy outside the main thread (pms, etc.). I can see how to someone I didn't deal with directly India could have seemed to not be extremely active. I had invoked an ability from my role pm that made India much weaker in the short term, in exchange for a stronger position later on, which forced me to lay low when possible.
Indian politics will be more active and open in this game, although I can only hope they're also more successful. :dizzy2:

Oh and beefy unless you have plans to do something specific you can just tell me to put japan on auto pilot untill you think you can handle it. It'l do very little unless it or an ally is attacked though.
Just a couple of questions -
Is India still part of the NAP?
Could the 'NAP' be renamed to something else by its members?
Did Spain join NATO after Franco's death and other similar real time-line events?
Is the USSR still in existence or has it reformed into Russia and the CIS?
etc
Also, what is sort of funny, Germany re-united in the real time-line in this period as well.

I be honest, what this game sort of needs is more factions, powers and far far less status quo. Greyblades might hate it, but alternative history then basically almost replicating 1992 would be more interesting and opening up many new powers to new players, making the game a successor to the previous.
At the moment, it is:
8 players versus 2 players versus 2 players versus 1.
White_eyes:D
09-20-2009, 00:16
They will team-up, of course:shrug:

09-20-2009, 00:27
then why don't we scrap the alliances all out no nato, no warsaw, no nap. who knows what would happen then.
Or give more countries to the other countries. Like get rid of some nations like portugal and make them non-affiliated, or make someone like brazil into iran, and add in the up and coming powers like Australia, etc. however, greyblades doesn't want any more players or anymore role pms to write. however, he could add in some players to like warsaw or nap that are not taken this round.
I think ignoramus, blackadder, and caius do not have countries yet, but either participated last time or showed interest. give them like iran, poland, somalia, etc.
Centurion1
09-20-2009, 00:29
OFF GAME-
I would rather not but i mean what choice do we have if it is nato vs. the world. Really no other option and then it just becomes 2 on 2 play with the 3 superpowers with an advantage. at least last round we mixed it up a little with the nap and added a third wheel. and i respect ylc for at least trying to make a European power center.
Greyblades
09-20-2009, 00:34
But Russia and China.. working together with India?
Thats up to the players. I think I'm starting to tire of this game, but I'm not going to quit, as of this moment the shackels are off, there wont be any politicians being killed automatically, no uprisings, no overrulements by congress/parliment/whatever and no nuclear restrictions. You want to play this game the way you want it go ahead I'm not going to stop you, If that includes nuking the world into slag thats your perogotive but either way there wont be anymore asspulls on my part to keep the game from turning into a nukefest... Well apart from one thing NATO members will have to declare Defcom 1 a turn earlier than launch if only to let the world kiss thier backsides goodbye.
Now if you dont mind I'm going to get the map updated find a way to pull Polands Role PM together and then we can start this sucker.

Uh actually this for myself I was kinda getting bored with this game before the reboot so I'm kicking the restictions, either the game will get interesting as you lot start trying to keep eachother from pushing the button or the game ends as the world burns, either way I dont feel like I'm screwing everyone out of a conclusion just because I'm bored.
I had an idea for a game similar to this, which would be done after this game. I haven't decided on the time period (either middle ages style or futuristic) where you can either be a Ruler/Empire Builder, or you can be either a Hero/(General/Warband).
The latter work like mercanies, which can be hired out by the Ruler/(Empire builder) to help them do things such as acquire land/resource points for them and other things.
Through work, these can get more powerful or weaker as time passes, it is sort of a mixture of two games in one, and you can pick what you want your "end goal" to be.
It's a little early to talk of some grand everyone outside of NATO alliance. If we got some players playing countries outside of NATO (and there are plenty just among those with role pms already) we could have a world with three or more sides easily. I won't lie, I sent a pm to Russia as did many of the other players here I'm sure, but that doesn't mean I have an alliance with them, or that they want one (and YLC is a great player for having his own plans, and I'm sure he will surprise all of us in the new game.).
I tried to grab some players from one of my games, and CDF is going to check with a few people. Let's see how many players join before deciding that any side is overpowered...

Right lets get this over with there wasnt much going on publicly so I asked to publicise one or two turns results to fill the space so heres the first part.:
Kiichi Miyazawa Prime minister of Japan looked around the room, across the table from him sat Paul Keating PM of Australia wearing a slightly bemused expression on his face. To his right Yon Hyong-muk Premier of North korea was nursing a black eye that had been administered by Chun Doo-hwan PM of south korea who was sitting to the left with a grin on his face. This was going well. It had taken many favours to get some of these men into the same room and a even more to keep them here, so what happens? 5 minutes in the two Koreans had allready been forcebly separated 3 times and Kiichi was being billed for 3 broken chairs and smashed drinks cabnet. Well, may aswell...
Kiichi-"Ahem as I was saying before I was so rudely interuped,"
Paul-"And the waiter was brained by a foot stool."
Kiichi-"Quite. Now lets get down to buisness, I have invited you here in the hopes that you will help me forge a new beggining for the east pacific. The Sino-middle eastern war showcased what powers like china and russia are willing to do to gain dominance over Asia and the war showed how powerful they realy are. Now I dont know what they will do next or when but I know this: NATO has proved that unless they are attacked directly they will not take up arms if Asia burns. I believe we should join together to keep that from happening, as such I ask you to join us in an alliance specifically to make sure China and Russia don't manage to destroy the continent."
Yon-"Why am I here? What makes you think I would entaer into an alliace to oppose them when China and Russia are our friends?"
Chun-"Oh realy? If I remember correctly you predecessor had one heck of a job explaining to both of them why you didnt help either of them during the war."
"Hah, if we had helped you backstabbing demons would have attacked us when we were weak."
"Weak? I thought you had the worlds finest army or were you just bluffing when you claimed your army had 4 million troops?"
"I assure you we do have 4 million and theyre all three times as good as your mob of hoodlums."
"My mob? Please, the reason you have 4 million is you count 'peasants with dustbin lids and barbecue forks' as soldiers."
Yon stood up from his seat
"Thats it you son of a-"
Kiichi-"Shut. Up."
Yon paused.
"I didn't invite you here to bicker, if you want to fight do it in your own time, but right now either say you agree to this alliance or shut up and sit down."
Yon looked puzzled for a moment, wondering why he should obey the Japanese PM, but that quickly subsided and he sank back into his chair.
Paul-"Well that was a fine show, it's not my decision alone but I dont see why my government wouldn't agree to this."
Chun-"I agree, if all goes well, South Korea and japan should be allies by the end of the week."
Yon-"There is no way in hell that we will join an alliance that has him in it."
Kiichi-"What a shame, the exit is 3 doors down the hall just keep going you cant miss it."
Yon glared at Kiichi, got up and walked out.
"Well I think that went pretty well."
Japan is now in a seperate alliance with South Korea and Australia.
It had been a long day for Madhukar Hiralal Kania. He had spent all his life striving to become Supreme court justice expecting to be ordering all the judges around from the big chair. He had finaly become big cheese just last month and what happens in his first week? a bout of flu knocks out most of his staff and now the Supreme court justice was forced to stand in for a blasted Magistrate. It was therefore understandable that when an american suit sauntered up to the stand with a formal request for permission to build a car dealership, Madhukar had to keep himself from whacking his secretary with his gavel.
"Name?"
"John Smith, your honor."
"Seriously?"
"Yep."
The irritated judge eyed the man.
"Ok then... Mr Smith... it says here you want to set up a car dealership in Panaji on the vacant lot on St Inez road, is that correct?"
"Yessir"
A security camera swiveled around observing the room. Blasted contraptions, thought Madhukar, every minuite that damn tinker toy screams into life, it doesn't help that the security guards never bother to oil the thing, its half rusted.
"Blasted thing, well, this shouldn't take long I'll just need to sign this and..."
After what seemed like an age the security camera fell silent.
"Finaly I swear that damn thing is not worth the money. Right mr smith go with my secritary here down to the record room to collect the deed."
In their collective relief niether the judge, nor the american, noticed that the camera had not returned to its starting postition.
As Mr smith was walking to the door two burly men in Indian millitary gear walked in.
"John Smith?"
"Yes?"
"AKA Mr Alfred Willick?"
"Excuse me?"
"Mr alfred willick of the United States of America, secret service?"
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"Mr Wilick you are under arest under the suspicion of being a spy, any attempt at resistance will be met with lethal force you are to surrender any weapons you have and come with us."
"This has to be a mistake I'm not Alfred Willick and I'm no spy."
"According to the chinese records captured 1985 you are, now come with us."
Alfred reached into his jacket but froze when the two soldiers aimed their rifles at him.
"Mr Willick you are suspected spy that means we are allowed to kill you if you resist, either come with us peacefully or come in an ambulance, your choice."
An american attempt to infiltrate India failed.
I dont see the point in putting up a new map seeing as not much has changed so.
Day 2 april 1st 1992.

The Canadian Prime Minister expresses his slight disappointment in our neighbor partaking in espionage actions.
We hope that you will take this on a more globalized scale, and join us in peace making for all
With that, Canada is open to Diplomatic talks, even from Russia.
America is disappointed in India's ruse of arresting American citizens on false charges.
We would request India to demostrate the following:
What evidence of any crimes are there? What has been committed?
Why was this person granted a visa by your government, then arrested?
We would like to inform India:
Innocent before proven guility. A person, if they even are a member of the CIA (which they were not) cannot simply be arrested unless they commit any crimes. Has this person committed any crimes? I fail to see anything other than susposed "counterfiet topsecret information" from the Chinese, from a decade ago. The CIA is the most respected and feared intelligence organisation in the world, to imply we would even use an agent that was leaked from 7 years ago is a very poor judgement.
We would request the return of the American citizen, John Smith, and hope to put an end to the sour relationship between our nations.

japan china is hurt that you consider us a threat. throughout the entire history we have done nothing but help you even going so far as negotiating your armys free build up with america.
You must realize the russian chinese war was a defensive one on our part and we most definetly diid not uinitiate hostilities
India is quite unhappy with this American attempt to gain intelligence on our country. We find it interesting that a country so quick to tout its position as a model of democracy and its solidarity with free nations would commit such an action against a fellow republic.
"John Smith"'s trial is set to start within a few months, at which point further state evidence against him will be revealed. You are welcome to send a lawyer to defend him, otherwise he will be provided one by the Indian state.

America is firm in its defence that no crimes have been committed on Indian soil by the subject, especially on the charges of conducting criminal activities. The citizen John Smith is currently having his 5th Amendment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution) rights breached by Draconian actions and false charges.
United States of America will offer a compromise. An independent court, such as that by the sovereign nation of Switzerland will take care of the proceedings. This will remove undue government and political motives that your government processes from the verdict, also, you must also specific exactly what crimes have been committed within your borders and this visit, by this individual. Surely, a free nation and model of democracy and fellow republic would agree to a fair, balanced trial where justice can be served.

(ooc: didn't you supply the so-called evidence? :beam: according to the write-up)

Um actually that was fluff from me, America just fumbled the roll but I wanted to write something more interesting than "America get's its agent captured by India in the middle of a covert action".
Centurion1
10-01-2009, 03:13
yes i had nothing to do with that. so perhaps you would be more willing to accept my friendly offer
(ooc: We officially never sent an agent, again that was fluff by greyblades, who wanted to deny what we really wanted to do.. a car dealership scheme. :beam: which allowed for the possibility of sending agents in, incase Zim decided to attack NATO. )

As a peaceful nation, Canada is highly concerned at the sudden militarization of the globe.
We demand an instant reasoning for your issues, and a third party to mediate if something in private went wrong.
As a final resort, Canada would like to remind all parties nuking the USA to plan to NOT include Canada in its blast radius...
We may be NATO, but we sure aren't warmongers. We're peaceful peacekeepers... but I'm telling you, one bullet or bomb dropped in Canada, and its war! :furious3:
We will be taking a neutral stand on the matter, unless otherwise "compelled" to by your hostile actions.
