View Full Version : Kung Fu Mafia III [Concluded]

When we last left our heroes...
Beefy had begun to sober up...holding his head to combat his hangover he wandered the halls of the temple. Everywhere he went he saw dead pirates, bottles of rum smashed on the ground beside them. These Incan's were tougher than they'd thought they would be. Coming around the corner he spotted CountArach. He was smiling.
"di shui zhi en dang yi yong quan xiang bao" said CA.
"What kinda sun god jibber jabber is that?" Beefy was still confused. CountArach smashed his forehead in with his bare hand. Stepping over the bodies of dead pirates he made his way down to the docks. Most of the monks had left the island with the women and children when the pirate ship had appeared. He had been left behind with makaikhaan to deal with the pirate rabble. One kung fu master would have been sufficient but they thought it would be nice to have company. Of course they hadn't counted on the incan god...CountArach stopped to pay his respects at makaikhaan's grave before leaving the island. They would build a small shrine here in tribute to his sacrifice:

CountArach heads out in his boat:

Having realized that the coastline was not a safe place for a monastery after all, CountArach led his people deep into the mountains, where he founded a new monastery.
https://img97.imageshack.us/img97/9109/p330677bhutanpanoramicv.jpg
The years seemed to fly by, and CountArach matured from a young and brash monk to the aged leader of the monastery, a wise kung fu master. There was peace in the monastery, but he worried that it was his reputation that kept those who would attack it away, and that once he was gone the monastery would fall.
And so one day, he gathered the monks for an announcement.
:stwmean:"You are all soft and weak!"
(this was how he began every speech)
:stwmean:"And so I have devised a test. When you return to your rooms, you will find a slip of paper under your pillow. For most of you it will contain your name only. Once you have read it, you must destroy it immediately. For three of you, those who I consider to be the strongest fighters, it will contain your name and the names of your partners. You had better be especially careful to destroy that paper. You will be monks by day, ninja by night. During the night, you will mark a select few with the symbol of our monastery. That symbol will remain until the exercise is complete. And for the rest of you monks, during the day you will attempt to find the ninja, and to vote for who you think they are. The person receiving the most votes will also have the symbol painted on their forehead. You must hone your instincts and your detective skills, for it is they alone that will save you in a real infiltration.
Good luck!"
**********************
The three ninja will get 2 "kills" per night at the start, dropping to 1 after the first of them is lynched (or they can choose to kill just one...).
The monks (townies) each have a duel score. They all start with a duel score of six. This can change in the following ways:
Not voting drops it by one for each day missed. The kung fu master will kick anyone whose score is too low out of the temple.
Winning a duel will increase it by one. Losing a duel has no effect.
Voting for one of the ninja will raise it by 2 if that person is not in the lead when the vote is cast, and by another 2 if they are lynched that round. Voting for a ninja who is in the lead raises it by 1. The final vote cast is the one that counts.
Giving the best answer to a riddle raises it by one.
Surviving a night attack raises it by one.
The dueling system:
Duels occur when one person posts "Challenge: So-and-so". That person is honor bound to take part in the duel. There will be a maximum of three per day.
If you find you don't have time for the game and wish to "suicide", you may post Challenge:CountArach. You will of course, lose, and be removed from the game. Suicide pacts will not be allowed however.
Duels are not done by a 7 > 6 so 7 wins system. Instead it will be a dice role, so 2 can beat 12.
The person defeated in combat must rest to heal their wounds, and cannot post for 24 hours or until the end of the day phase, whichever is longer. Their vote is invalidated. I will try and catch the duels during the day and do a quick write-up.
Monks have a chance of beating back their ninja attacker, this chance starts at 6% (1% for every duel point). You would have to work very hard to make this a significant obstacle.
You will not be informed of any changes to your duel score (too much work, and it would reveal who the ninja were). At the end of the game the numbers will be posted however.
There will be no night phase, instead the day will last 36-48 hours, during which time all night orders will be sent to me. I will probably ask for a set in advance to ensure that none are missed.
The ninja will do their own "kill" write-ups.
At the beginning of each day, I will post a riddle or trick question with a vaguely eastern theme (as accurately eastern as my depiction of monastery life :p ). The kung fu master encourages mental acuity as well as physical ability!
Rules and such:
There will be no townie pm.
Roles will not be revealed upon "death".
Since "dead" players aren't really dead they can talk as much as they want too.
The ninja win when they eliminate every last monk, not when the numbers become equal as in a regular game, because the monks have a chance to survive a night attack and to nullify a ninja's vote. A very slim chance. Ninja start with higher scores, gain in score for making "kills", and in the scenario that would normally be game over, they don't need to hide and may combine their numbers.
PM's from me or from other players may be quoted. No screenshots however.
Rule Addendum: If you lose a duel you are allowed 1 "Darn it!" type post, no game commentary though.
Rule Addendum: Since I just realized this could be a problem, if you lose a duel you are still allowed to post an answer to the riddle, as long as you don't reference the game.

Oh, and before I forget, about the riddles. Mainly just for fun, but I thought they could add flavor in a zen koan kind of way. Obviously I can't think up zen koans on my own though.
It may be one person, multiple people, or nobody who gets the credit, I will say which. Sometimes I will give it even if I had a difference answer in mind sometimes not.
And to get us started, an opening question which you can answer in your sign up post if you like (it will count):
Why does the kung fu master value mental acuity as much as physical ability?

I must defend my title... actually I was reading back over this game the other day whilst procrastinating. Good times.
EDIT: As for the question - Kung Fu is a totality. Only by becoming one with the world and experiencing the true fullness of what the Universe has to offer can one truly become a master.

Why does the kung fu master value mental acuity as much as physical ability?
Only through the mastering of mental acuity, will a monk be disciplined enough to master his physical ability, yet, without physical ability, a monk's mental acuity is of no use in defense.
In.
Why does the kung fu master value mental acuity as much as physical ability?
He's just making that stuff up to keep his position, because kung fu master is old and fat. To divert attention away from his miserable physical condition, he claims that the mind is as important as the body and of course, hís mind is "superior" and blahblahblah and compensates for his age and fatness. Time to remove granddad and to put a younger, stronger and more attractive monk, like me, in charge of this monastery. I promise women, free beer and awesome parties.

I'm very interested in seeing how the "no posting for 24 hours" bit works. I've read a lot of descriptions of mafia roles, and preventing people from posting is an apparently common ability/rule that never gets used in our games.

Voting for one of the ninja will raise it by 2 if that person is not in the lead when the vote is cast, and by another 2 if they are lynched that round. Voting for a ninja who is in the lead raises it by 1. The final vote cast is the one that counts.
Need clarification on this. Please confirm my understanding of the rules:
Vote for ninja, not in the lead (2), ninja is lynched (2)= 4 points
Vote for ninja, in the lead (2) , ninja is lynched (1) = 3 points
Vote for monk (0), monk is lynched (0) = 0 points

You can get just 2 points in the first scenario if the ninja isn't lynched--the extra two are a bonus of sorts.

It seems to me that this system will automatically tell us if we voted for a ninja. If you get 1 or 2 points after a day phase, you know that the person you voted for was a ninja. Is that how it works? If so, I'm concerned about this being exploited by an intentionally dispersed voting pattern.

You don't know if you got points for voting or not, only I do(and the ninja...):
You will not be informed of any changes to your duel score (too much work, and it would reveal who the ninja were). At the end of the game the numbers will be posted however.
Although this is slightly incorrect because you will know if it went up from winning a duel or answering a riddle.

CA being a Master in the Arts of the Tiger grabs AA's ankle and foot then spins him around in the air. AA spins in the air for up to 10 seconds.
CA Jumps backwards up to 20 paces lifting his left arm above his head and placing his right arm fully stretched out in front of him " I will defeat you Double A!" says CountArach with his lips not moving at the same time as his words. AA also gets into a pose and then kicks the air with his right leg, then the left, then a quick 4 strikes with his arms; these moves are followed by a Chuck Norris style kicking sound effects.

Meditating on his rice mat, Askthepizzaguy said to himself "How would Buddha handle this dilemma?"
After meditating for some time, he realized that buddha would have rolled a dice and decided randomly. Charging out into the courtyard with his eyes closed he waited until he knocked into somebody, and then called out his challenge to the confused monk lying on the ground in front of him.
Sithlord was surprised, but accepted. They fought all around the courtyard, but eventually Sithlord got a little to fancy with his weird backwards pushups and pizza stomped on his gut, ending the fight.
Askthepizzaguy Wins!

atheotes vs Renata
https://img38.imageshack.us/img38/6008/zhangziyimichelleyeohcr.jpg
atheotes approached Renata in the courtyard.
"It looks to me like it is a new day" he said, pointing towards the rising sun and nodding his head.
And then he attacked her. Spinning and leaping around the room, the fought with a multitude of different weapons, pausing occasionally to say catty things to each other. Eventually Renata hit atheotes in the side of the head with the flat of her sword, stunning him.
Renata Wins!
Double A vs Centurion
Double A had thought long and hard about the monks dilemma during the night. He had gone over each conversation, each subtle exchange, each expression, searching for clues that would reveal who the ninja were. He had an epiphany during the morning meal. Standing up, he yelled out to the room, "I challenge you, Centurion, you sneaky ninja!"
But everyone just laughed at him.
johnhughthom vs Beskar
https://img24.imageshack.us/img24/275/yamanin31891315b5226755.jpg
Apropos of nothing, johnhughthom challenged beskar. They fought for some time, each making sure to go out of their way to demonstrate their table busting powers. Eventually beskar had the bright idea to fake stepping to the side to break a chair that happened to be there. When john relaxed, waiting for him to finish with the chair, beskar spun around and sucker punched him.
Beskar Wins!
Tratorix Vs Beefy
https://img193.imageshack.us/img193/9005/bruceleechucknorris.jpg
John was standing next to beefy, talking about the fight. Tratorix came up to them and said "john, unless you care to withdraw your fight, I would like to challenge beefy"
John said "huh? But I already...?"
And Beefy took the initiative and kicked tratorix in the face as hard as he could.
Beefy Wins!

Being honest CR's reason is a bad one. ATPG wouldn't do that for a start as as far as I know, he has no grudge against CR. I would bet money on it that ATPG didn't do it.
So the WIFOM would be if ATPG would do it, however, if he did do it, it was probably just a random choice.

I am calling Sigurd's rule of three and voting: shlin28 for being third on the bandwagon.
I try my very hardest not to meta-game.
All you guys who vote for Sasaki just for being Sasaki, every game, I generally disapprove. If someone annoys me or engages in a rivalry with me, I do my best to treat them like every other player when considering my vote or my murder. I try to make sure I don't investigate or block or perform any other action against the same player on round one, unlike some who have deemed it necessary to investigate me four times and block me once on round one out of the last five games I have played, consecutively.
If anyone thinks I have a grudge against Crazed Rabbit, they are mistaken. If anyone thinks that I carry ill will from one game to another, they are mistaken. The only thing I do is go after certain strategies which I feel are bad for the town, such as not posting or voting, because it doesn't catch mafia to do so and it also seems like an attempt to avoid being caught in a lie. As such, I'm an anti-lurker. But even so, I leave them alone when they choose to actually be active in a game. It's nothing personal.
Remember, it's not personal, it's just business. Shame on any who think I'm that low of a player.

Hmm, thinking about it, ATPG strikes me as a worthy target.
Killing me could well be vengeance for the pirate game. Now, there's no kill write-ups, and we all know how ATPG writes thousands of words per mafia game.
But what better excuse for him that he's not the mafia? And who was the first to point it out? Why, none other than ATPG.

Personally the current bandwagon on ATPG just strikes me as utter rubbish.
ATPG is too much of an addict to writing long write ups to forgo the opportunity. This isn't a case of finding a cigarette butt at the murder scene and ruling out the non smoker suspects, this is basically telling us, that ATPG is willing to reduce the enjoyment in the game (from long write ups), disappoint the host (with no write ups), all just to further his position as a mafia, that's a rather low blow

I voted Renata for voting me, it appears your a much better option. Surely you have more reason to lynch ATPG, other than deliberately joining the bandwagon.
There is always, as I say, a difference between WIFOM and common sense.
The logic in the argument against ATPG is entirely flawed, IMO.

I don't have access to Sasaki's inbox. I could find out who sends him PMs, but all Moderators can do this and won't as it breaks the sportsmanship rule.
Usually game hosts will inform us if there are any hidden or secret roles in their games. Sasaki has not. The only roles mentioned are the three ninja hence my assertion that no-one else got role PMs from Sasaki.

Well, this is odd.
Abstains: 4 (Chaotix, CA, RR, split)
In the rules, you get extra points which go on your duel score merely for voting a ninja... they don't even have to die from the lynch for it to work. This increases your ability to survive against the ninja themselves. Why, in this game, would a townie abstain? At least vote a random person with zero votes and attempt to increase your abilities, yes? No?
Am I missing something which explains why abstaining is a good strategy? :juggle2:
Also those not voting who have been online today and yesterday... your duel score drops from doing that. Reminder.
ATPG is right. Read the rules, guys, if you haven't. If you're Town, you get points for each vote on a Ninja (day-end votes only, I presume? otherwise we could just vote everyone one right after the other). Points give you a better chance to survive night attacks. Survived night attacks give us confirmed Town (i.e. Scottishranger, right? Am I missing anything?) Confirmed Town is how we win.

Then the Mafia would obviously exploit this by feigning kills on each other or by making sure they get killed.

Then the Mafia would obviously exploit this by feigning kills on each other or by making sure they get killed.
feigning kills on each other = fewer dead townies.
attacking only the people with higher duel scores = statistically fewer dead townies.
predictable mafia kills = also good for the town.

TinCow received the most votes, and approached the master, who painted the symbol on his forehead.
"In a real ninja attack, you would not get off so easy. Go and meditate on the difference until dawn"
Back in his room, TinCow spent a few seconds pondering what he would do if ninja's really were attacking, and then headed for his rice wine stash. It was no Bordeaux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Gigondas Vaqueras, he thought, but it'll do.

Scottishranger went out for a stroll to relieve his bladder when suddenly a masked man in black garb jumped in front of him. Scottishranger immediately adopted a defensive posture "Fight me, for I will not surrender without one!" The dark figure drew a multitude of weapons. Schottishranger scowled:"Are you too afraid to face me without weapons you coward?"
The dark one sneered:" I won´t fight you at all, you fool!"
Scottishranger noticed a light breeze from behind. He turned around to see a giant hammer that took in all of his vision before he was knocked out cold.
A few hours later scottishranger came to immediately feeing a searing pain like his head was going to explode, a large red sign was imprinted on his forehead.

Or at least, that's how it was supposed to happen. But in actuality, scottishranger once more fended off his attacker.

Sithlord was waiting for his friend, constantly waiting. He was aspiring to use this precious free-time together with his friend. He checks the sundial and looks up at the heavens.
Sithlord travels to the sacred gardens, a place of beauty, out of the sight of others. He sees his friend sprawled on the floor with a large red sign imprinted on his forehead. He stands behind him, trying to assess the situation and surveying the area around him. Sithlord never heard the rustling of the sakura tree as he loses consciousness.
Sithlord returned to reality with warm sensation running down his body, and a soft breeze against his bare skin. He opened his eyes to see the back of his friends head laying underneath him, discovering his body was against his in an awkward angle. He stepped up and six large ribbons of his robe lay on the floor around him, partially dyed scarlet from the manner they have been removed from his body.
He was left exposed and vulnerable. The marks on his back may heal with time, but the marks on his dignity will stay with him forever.

Or at least that's how it was supposed to happen. But in actuality, sithlord managed to defeat his attacker.
