View Full Version : Ordered Retreats Possible?

Dear future EB-II players
I fear it is hardcoded, but when you are attacked, you either can accept the battle or retreat your troops. But you cannot control where your troops go. Well, after a lost battle, this makes sense. Your army is routing and you cannot control where or when you can gather and regroup the soldiers again. But if you retreat for strategically important reasons, even before a battle is started, you should actually be able to choose where you stop and wait for the enemy. For example the next bridge, city, wood or any other well defenable position.
What do you think, can something be done to change this?
Greetings

Nice idea.~:) Sadly yes It surely is hard-coded.
As a side note, I always wished there could be a way to see the terrain in 3D while you march your army as the map doesn't offer 100% reliable information.

Seconded! I think it is one of the more annnoying parts of total war games when you set an army to defend a area only to find out when they are attacked that your troops are at the bottom of a huge hill.
Another nice thing would be the ability to fortify river crossings.

This is a very nice idea. Maby the "tower" - option can be modified?

I could imagine, that the EB-II map solves this problem, at least to a certain extent. Look at the high mountains:

Love it
At some point it can improve that but still there are a lot of missing parts: like forests, small hills, etc.
If you are the defender then you choose your ground more carrefully.
Not to mention if this would be added to the AI it would improve his peformance too...
Anyway back to skinning the drapanai.

I'm not sure what your talking about there.

That is a bug, if you look in the provinces preview you will see Foot states its a problem with one of the map files.

What? Come on, high mountains are cool!
As for the "tower"-thing. Your generals can build forts and can build towers. Maybe one could replace the towers with bridge-defenses.
Yes they do look cool but you need to think for a gameplay perspective, there would be problems with seeing things that are behind them for one thing.

I thought thats what you were on about, can you build them on river crossings? I'm pretty sure you can't. Anyway the game can't be modded in that way.

Even more annoying is when the above happens and you try to save your army by trying to retreat over those red lines only to find out that no matter you do your units retreat up the hill and behind the enemy lines. :wall:
Though, that happened in M2TW Vanilla couple of times I haven't seen this kind of behavior in Kingdoms. Perhaps it was fixed??

What's even more frustrating is to see enemy soldiers routing towards a reserve army that hasn't been brought on the battlefield. Your soldiers - though fresh and eager - will take losses because they're not that eager to defend themselves.
Or some weird bug that makes your units loose soldiers when they enter battle (possibly because of some trees standing there), which affects their morale. :(
