View Full Version : How is the in-game support cost derived?
Anyone help me out with a minor technical point? The support stat in the unit production excel file is 4 for spearmen, for example. The actual in-game support cost is 50. The closest I can get to deriving the 50 is 4*12=48. Discrepancy of 2 florin. Likewise for feudals, stat is 5, cost is 63, 5*12=60. Discrepancy of 3 florin. Anyone tell me how to get the derivation exact?
Thanks for any advice.

Well, it seems to me that the cost is 12.5 for every point. I think the game actually uses 25 florins per point. But that is with huge units, at default size all units are cut in half and so are the costs.
With this system it is not possible to change the costs for every unit with the same percentage. If you make changes you will also change the balance between units and influence the choices the AI makes with training units.
12.5 Thanks, Westland, how could I not see that? I bury my head in shame... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
This qualifies as the dumbest thread ever made.
To think I am getting my seven year old to do extra maths every night... I should be doing it next to him.
But I do think I can use the costs to make an interesting point, which I'll post in the main hall.
Thanks, again.
To add a little to Westland's answer:
1 point = 12.5 for every 100 men.
So the formula is:
Support Cost = (# of SupportCostPoint)*(12.5)*(UnitSize/100)
Leave out all decimal places without rounding.
With the same number of support cost point, a 60-men unit will cost less than a 100-men unit in support cost.
Thanks guys, I was thinking you can use the price to support cost ratio as a rough measure of unit effectiveness:

The way it works is like so:
support value x number of men / 8
e.g. for Spearmen
4 x 100 / 8
= 50
simple as that. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
