View Full Version : Small Mafia Game HAIKU MAFIA: The Cutting Word [Concluded]
Diamondeye
10-30-2010, 14:57
This game is inspired by a former mini-mafia game to run on the site. The idea is that the players may only express themselves in the forms of haiku poems, that is, non-rhyming verses of 5-7-5 mora (roughly, "syllables") - examples to come, and more may be found in the thread of the precursor game. On this point, this game will differ from the former game in some respects: You are allowed to post several "verses" in one post, as opposed to the artifical "one verse per post"-rule in the former game (to prevent cluttering; this game will also have more than double the amount of players, so it will be a necessity).
Also: Only the syllabic form of haiku is required by the players; other characteristics of haiku such as the kigo and kireji are not required (although inclusion is of course impressive ).
Finally, votes and unvotes may be made outside the poems if needed.
Don't sign up for the game if you do not plan on following the required form; a single accidental offence (misjudging the syllabic construction of a word, per example) can happen, but ignorance of the format will result in a Wrath of God punishment if done on purpose.
The game will have a single mafia faction, and several other "special" roles. They will not differ a lot from normal mafia roles, but be prepared for some minor quirks underway.
The structure of the game will be traditional day/night phases, and the "events of the night" writeup that launches each day will describe the happenings in haiku form - but other parts of the writeups will probably be in standard prose. An example - and illustration of a haiku for those waiting for one - would be that if mafia role "Talon" murders a vanilla townie (Diamondeye), who is being tracked by special role "Hawk":
Diamondeye walks
under the moonlit night sky,
being watched by two
Yet seeing no one,
he is struck by the Talon,
and the moon is gone.
In darkness above,
A Hawk loses sight of him.
But it smells his blood.
This means that, comparing several writeups, readers of the thread will be able to make out the role names of those who are active at night - perhaps even try and link them to a function.
With all that out of the way, for this game, I am looking for around 15 players. Of course, it'd be aesthetically pleasing to have exactly 17 players - so if there are that many signups (or more), the limit is 17.

The Game is starting!
Far from civilization, in a small, beautiful institution built on the side of a mountain, surrounded by gardens, glades, mountain roads and small, trickling rivers houses a dozen people. Eleven students in the art of haiku-writing, and their sensei, Diamondeye-san. For almost seven years, these people have lived together in isolation, the students receiving the most enlightening tutelage and their creative identities slowly unfolding themselves like the shy flower in the shade, slowly unfolding their true talents. Truly, their learning years are coming to an end, for when the sun rises tomorrow, the sensei will write those of them he finds worthy their diplomas, decorating them as the most proficient masters in that requiring art of haiku. Yet in the moonlight, two of the students sit outside, nerveous each for their own reasons, but of the same mind. One of them cooly expectant, the other nerveously clutching a penknife used for cutting their pens sharp; the only weapon within miles' reach.
The sensei sits in a meditative pose, facing the wall opposite his door. Yet he hears their footsteps. "So, you reveal yourselves. And you reveal about yourselves. I see that you are both afraid, though for different reasons. One of you is breathing very loudly."
The mentioned student bares his teeth, still clutching the penknife. He advances a pace, but the sensei keeps talking in calm tones. "Yet why are you here, then, my best student? Surely, you have nothing to fear compared to this... animal?"
The other figure, still in the doorway, merely shakes his head. "None of them deserves the honor. It should be mine alone."
The sensei slowly turns towards his assailants. "I see that this art that I have studied truly evokes the emotions of man - and beast. Your final test, then: What shall my epitaph be?"
The student at the doorway gasps for the break of a second before speaking.
"Thus the world rewards
he who gives it all he knows.
Diamondeye-san."
The penknife made brief work of the throat of the old sensei, and the animal-like killer fled into the night. The other student stood as if pondering something, staring at the expended sensei, before turning to leave.
It is now day 1!
This day will last about 34 hours - every succeeding round will last for roughly 24 hours.
Remember to keep your posts in haiku-format (5-7-5), and your votes in the proper format (votes are allowed outside the 5-7-5 structure).

Isolated in the mountainside lodge, far from any kind of justice system, the students have to make their own rules. And as it quickly shows, they have taken to the hard discipline that their sensei bestowed upon them, for while they were not too agreed on who should face punishment, they were all agreed that the punishment should be hard; as it was proper for he who slew a true artist. One of the students, ArpeggiateTHIS, said:
"We cannot leave room
for hesitation or frown.
We must strike true, now."
And the others simply nodded. As such, they each voiced their suspicions, and in the end, three of them stood back as the only ones who had recieved more than a single vote against them; sprig, landlubber and Tratorix.
The three of them stood in stoic silence, glaring at each other. Everyone else watched, tense with anticipation.
In the end, Tratorix was the first to lower his gaze. The two others looked at each other and nodded. They would both live through the night. Tratorix, on the other hand, was dragged by strong hands, his stoic mask again present, yet it was a fruitless gesture of resolution; without flinching, he was drowned by his head being held underwater in the pond of the establishment.
The dead Tratorix
was innocent after all.

Day 2 has ended!
The poet students gathered once again, their strength resolved by the most criminal of happenings in the dark of night; They would answer the foul play of those who sought to steal from them everything, life by life, and today, they had cast their suspicion on God Emperor; It would seem that some of the students thought that he was quite too vocal about who should face justice; and yet it seemed that he would now be the one who faced it himself. When the sun set on the small gathering, he threw his hands into the air in surrender. "Fine, fine, I understand. If it cannot be otherwise. Follow me," and they followed him to the pond. Before they could take hold of him, he took out a folded sheet of paper and placed it in the dry safety. "The last written words of a true poet," he said, with what many of the others took as an egotistic tone. His head was held underwater for long before he stopped moving. One of the others took the sheet, jokingly first, but he quickly gaped in wonder. "Listen..."
"Dear God Emperor,
I hope this letter finds you
intact, yes, and quickly.
There are those students
who are misled and selfish
and will hurt others
You must promise me;
keep all my students alive.
Be their safeguard, son."
The reading student stammered. "It's in the hand of the late sensei."
Dumbstruck and demoralized, they all retired for the night, now without their best man watching over them.
God Emperor was the innocent safeguard!

Day 3 has ended!
The students gathered once more, now in desperate resolution as the numbers of the fallen were ever increasing; Most of them were more vocal than the previous day, and the votes flew throughout the day, but in the end, the one known as classical_hero was condemned to death. He protested loudly all the way to the pond, and even after being submerged, and quickly used up his breath. His death brought little consolation, though, and no progress; they had again killed in vain and struck an innocent down. Thus demoralized, they returned each to their own chambers, in darkened moods. Among them, a sardonic smile lined the face of the purist. Already, he knew who to strike down in the dark of night.

Night 3 is over!
The cunning purist
smiles devilishly and grim
moving through the night
He has set his eyes
on the prize of the poet school:
A girl; The beauty.
Renata is dead,
look at the poor girl, blooded,
broken and murdered.
Renata was the pro-town beauty!
It is now day 4!
Due to the death of Renata, nobody will be lynched today as the day is spent in mourning!
The five remaining students stood, depressed and mourning around the body of the beautiful Renata, the only girl to ever attend the haiku academy. None could remove their eyes from the still image of the beauty; It was as if the spark of life sparkled just beneath her skin, but it was cold and stiff to the touch, and the wound on her neck could not be ignored; someone had murdered her in cold blood. The students looked up at each other with dead eyes, and it seemed as if time itselfpassed with no notice. Finally, their apathy was conquered by physical weariness, and they realized that the sun had just set; they had wasted an entire day in lament.
Day 4 has ended! It is now night 4!
This night, two poets met
The Purist and the Jealeous
and joined ways again.
"AskThePizzaGuy,"
one sneered. "Finally got you!"
The knife spoke from then.
AskThePizzaGuy was a vanilla townie!
It is now day 5!
The last four students gathered, looking at each other nerveously. The wicked grin that passed between two of them was easily visible. Panicking, ArpeggiateTHIS took a step backwards. "No! This... This is impossible. Why all this blood? Why all this death?"
He felt someone clench his arms behind his back, baring his breast. Forth stepped Sprig; his face was a mask of calculated calm, and his pale fingers clenched a deadly penknife. "None of you deserves it. Look at your amateurish poetry. YOU ARE NOT WORTHY! I had to... I had to kill them, Arpeg. Whenever one of them said a faulty poem, I carefully noticed the offence. And I repaid it in full with this knife, every night, one at a time. And now, you."
Before ArpeggiateTHIS could answer, Sprig violently thrusted the penknife into him time and again, again, again, just below the ribcage. The poor victim, still retained by Sprig's partner, sputtered a low whimper, blood running from his mouth, mixing with spit and froth as his body spasmed and collapsed on the floortiles.
The two murderers turned and looked at the last remaining student, Captain Blackadder. "Now, you," Sprig noticed. The Captain backed nerveously. "No, no... Please say this is just a bad dream! I want to wake up!"
Sprig smiled his devilish smile and threw the penknife to his partner, Joooray. "Get him," he said, turning his back and already on his way to his chamber. The beastlike Joooray quickly overpowered the innocent captain, and Sprig shrugged as he went inside, trying to ignore the noise.
The mafia have won the game!
Congratulations to Sprig (the Purist) and Joooray (the Jealeous)!
And thanks to everyone for playing! Postgame discussion may now begin!

It wasn't really your fault (okay, but not in that sense); The mafia had to kill someone who had made a wrong haiku if anyone had done so during the day before.
Hence why ATPG got to live to the end. They were aching to kill him but he was simply in the clear with his haiku

I knew Sprig had something to hide, and Pizza fell for it! Hah, that was good.
As for Jooray, I can't believe I bought his early-on inactivity story. Sounded so legit.
What? The game is over already, and there I was afraid to look at the threat, because I feared to be put under more pressure by pizza. :laugh4:
Yeah, Sprigs move day one was probably what made the game for us, as I said, it was a risky move, but I'm sure he would have been under a lot of pressure if he had broken the tie. I also could have saved Sprig there, because I had the ability to add a vote in private, but felt it wouldn't be a good idea to use it day one and thus putting a lot of attention on Sprig. We definitely took our chances there.
Also we were a bit limited because of having to choose as our kill target someone that made a mistake during the day, but maybe that also helped, because our kill pattern wasn't readable this way (e. g. I'd never kill landlubber night one). Ultimately it maybe won us the game though, as we would have killed pizza last night if we had free choice. :laugh4:
BTW: Here (http://www.quicktopic.com/45/H/LPHDkPUUhqP) is our quicktopic, in order to impress DE it is also mostly in Haiku.
And the inactivity story was totally legit, although as pizza says, I'm not the most outspoken person anyway and the Haiku thing limited that even more, as it always took me quite a while to actually post.
Finally, thanks a lot for the game DE, I had a blast. I'm sure I'm not the only one that took some time to write the Haiku which may have limited participation quite a bit. But I found it worth it, as it was a real nice variation and break from the normal routine.
Will comment later tonight. I am stuck in a project managment course.
Even if we had another round, ATPG would have been lynched and the mafia would have won anyway. Congrats to the mafia, especially Sprig whose, um, interesting strategy of not saving himself from a tie vote certainly threw me off the trail.
FYI - which innocent person does this? when I reflect back on it, if I was innocent I would have saved myself. I think most people would have as well? The reason that I voted for you to make the 3-way tie is that I thought my 33% chance of dieing was better odds than having to defend myself from the lynch the next day.
In that regards, voting for the tie was scummy.
I am glad we won as I was suspecting that I would have to sacrifice myself the following morning (as per QT).
I also think we are in a rather comfortable situation. But we should be weary of the things that might happen during the day phase. It's good we have 3 ways to approach the day tomorrow. But both in which pizza isn't lynched, have their drawbacks:
- My extra vote will only help if it's a close vote and for this at least one townie has to vote with us otherwise we can only achieve a tie and this will most likely expose our connection.
- You confessing can be easily interpreted as you trying to save someone, especially if I'm the one up for the lynch.
So we either get pizza lynched or you have to claim rather early and with what explanation?
Not sure if i need to send this but just in case.
Death to Renata though i wish it was someone else. Even in our lovely situation I would prefer to have killed ATPG.

I do wonder if tommorrow we should sacrifice myself? Once i am dead you should get another vote and be able to kill whoever you chooce.
Hmm if i think about it. We should win?
If we lynch Atpg we outnumber the innocents
If we can't we might be able to use your extra vote to get an innocent killed, if not it might be good to sacrifice myself. I can admit to being the purist.
Night 3 - Kill Renata
Day 4 - Lynch sprig
Night 4 - Kill ATPG
Day 3 - only 3 would remain, and you can lynch whoever you want with your two extra votes

Would anyone please use their
logic and EXPLAIN?
To be fair, (you can ask Renata)
Logic tends to fly out the window
when I (and that Seon guy too) are involved.
Good game guys. I blew it when I grabbed onto classical_hero and wouldn't let go. Had I instead chosen Joooray who I was sure was creeping up the scum meter for going after me (the case on me WAS ridiculous), we would have been fine.
I don't know, I liked it. :laugh4:
Yeah, it was me trying to look super innocent, I thought if I just joined the bandwagon and ignored the bad feeling about you and Sprig that was expressed by others, I might appear more scum, than by adding to the case against you, which had no chance of succeeding that day anyway. But I guess it was a bit much and might have gotten me lynched the next day, which was the only scenario in which we actually could have lost at that point. So, yeah, dodged a bullet there.

The reason it wasn't a good case was because my behavior was demonstrably not what you said it was, and I was able to rally townies to my side and avoid being lynched.
Had the wagon been on someone besides classical, it would have been a bad move for you to go after me like that. The real error was mine, but the case you put up against me wasn't strong and I was able to deflect it. Like I said, I blame myself for not capitalizing like I should have.

Well you did the dirty work for the mafia by getting the lynch onto me. I was correct in my suspicions of sprig and yet you did not listen to me. It was a shame we did not have enough people, since their might have been a chance for the town to get onto the mafia, but we did not have a chance. two killers for this small group is too many.

I admit, I screwed this one up.

Yeah, I've never been very good it making strong cases against others. But making a case out of little while knowing it is wrong is even harder.

As you probably know, roughly 50% of the actual cases I toss at mafia suspects while town are entirely contrived. I take a little bit of actual suspicious evidence and I combine it with other things which look suspicious but don't really conclude one way or another. I combine that with the usual emotional trickery and that usually sells it.
Even as townie you have to embellish and sell your case, otherwise it won't be popular. So one could say I do exactly what I do as townie when I am mafia... which is try to convince people based on a little bit of truth and a little bit of opinion and a lot of selling. That's why it is hard to tell when I am mafia or not (woe be upon me).
It always has to make sense as an accusation, though; if for example the case was I'm defending Sprig, then it has to hold up in the most dire example, which was his near-death experience. I didn't bat an eye. That's one of the reasons your case smelled wrong to me.
It was wrong enough to make me immediately suspect you; that's the kind of thing you have to avoid. If it is a lie you tell, you want to try to make it consistent for the entire game, no matter what it is. If at one point during the game it rings inconsistent, and someone remembers why, then you generally can get called out on it.
But Sprig's gambit fooled me. I don't like to take that kind of risk when I am mafia, and that's why it never registered. I started trying to look at the game from a Sprig is innocent viewpoint, and that's a bad foundation to work from.
Sprig let me implode, and that's a good strategy when mafia against me; get past my senses and then let me toss myself off a cliff.

I wanted to vote Joooray by then, too, but my :daisy: role hampered me. If I was right, but couldn't push it through in time, my chances of being killed and thus ending the game would have gone way up. I can't believe that one extraneous "a" is the reason I was killed. Argh!
You're absolutely right, though. And even more so from my perspective. I really did get a bit of BS whiff from your posts (up until your obvious frustration over CH, which changed my mind). But that's a reason peculiar to me, and I knew my own alignment. CH's vote was also understandable. But Joooray's was not. Although he did very well with his reasoning otherwise (even about Sprig), that vote was pure opportunism.
Regardless, a very strong game from Sprig and Joooray.

I disagree; we (collectively) just got outplayed. It happens. Kudos for calling out Sprig.

Good, then the obviousness of Joooray's guilt wasn't just my imagination; and I felt by the end it should have been clear I was being genuine to those who were paying close attention. I'm glad you made the right judgment there. You get points for noticing I wasn't scum in time.
I am having trouble telling classical as townie from classical as mafia. Game was too short and his posts were too few to get an accurate reading.

Yeah, but I didn't save him there either, not even in private with my ability to add one vote. Isn't saving someone from the lynch the most obvious way of showing a connection. That's why your argument of not having saved Sprig at that point didn't stick with me.
Anyway, I have to put a some major work into my ability to play when I'm mafia. Here I apparently got lucky, but the Star Wars game over at the TWC was a disaster.

So Renata and ATPG, if we work together, we can do much damage against those who are mafia.
Heh. Unless I'm mafia, mwahahaha.

When Renata is mafia, I can accuse her all day long and be 100% right (as I have several times in the past) and people don't listen to me and she wins.
She is the Teflon Don, and totally immune to my charms powers.
Renata has to teach me some of that, I become a nervous wreck as soon as pizza puts his attention towards me, which ultimately gets me lynched. :laugh4:

Meh, you're nearly as elusive as she is. I'll get you someday.

Yeah, I'm elusive as in, I remain unnoticed to you for longer than others maybe. But as soon as you focus your attention on me it's very bad news. Look at the Star Wars game over at TWC. Sure it was Rebel Jeb that got me lynched in the end, but for me the downfall started when you started to accuse me for flinching during the night. Not sure if that was part of why Rebel Jeb blocked me, but it most certainly made me look might suspicious.

I had actually forgotten about that, but yeah I baited you and you came out of hiding and I accused you of flinching, and called for a bounty hunter to take you out. When that didn't happen you were lynched the next day I think. I don't remember, though, that was when I was busy starting up this game and I was kind of phoning it in over there. I got more active at the end though, and that turned out.... okay.
