There is now an emulator mimicking DOS era hardware that can run inside your browser (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/05/18/javascript_pc_emulator/). It already is capable of running Linux, provided you grab one with an FPU emulator. You can get it here (http://bellard.org/jslinux/index.html)

Ah, I used an Apple II emulator (http://www.virtualapple.org/oregontraildisk.html) to run Oregon Trail. Much the same concept, I think.

What is different is that this is all written in JavaScript (and at least compared to QEMU it is different because the JavaScript code actually executes the x86 machine code).

So does this mean I can finally replay Wasteland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasteland_%28video_game%29)? In my browser?

No you'd have to port the DOS to it/extend the emulator to provide mimic more hardware capabilities: this emulator is just the strict minimum for Linux apparently.

Well, given that Linux can run on a saltine cracker with 64k of RAM, that's no fun at all. Pfooey.
