Yay!

I figured this move would be beneficial.

Obvious gamebreaking idea is obvious. Still, we got some data.

Unless (unlikely) that they can steal as well as perform their regular action. I doubt it though.

In this case, the roleblock of Ishmael isn't supportive of any particular theory. In the next few nights, a repeated roleblock might have an effect.

Ishmael wasn't blocked last night, anyways.

Suspects list

Lowest risk:

Diana Abnoba- Protecting her gold last night, as the writeup says.
issaikhaan- stealing gold last night from Diana
TinCow- Stealing gold last night from Zaccino
Zaccino- Unconvert-able while Captain, and protecting his gold last night from Tincow
Askthepizzaguy- I can be found stealing treasure two nights ago. The person I stole treasure from is still alive. I can tell you who I stole from and how much treasure. They can confirm.
BSmith- unconvert-able while Quartermaster
[B]NinjaCow64- unconvert-able while First mate

Next:
Members of the Four Horsemen while they were doing the kill were not investigating or converting. Not completely bulletproof but something other than zero.
Four Horsemen: [B]Chaotix, etc, etc, ACIN?

Beskar was blocked last night, so while he could be a convert, he's not an original.

Waiting on scan results for two others on that list...

Askthepizzaguy
10-06-2012, 00:43
Three originals, two offering letters of marque, so.... are we overlooking something? The third could have been doing whatever.

Unlikely they were doing anything besides investigating, the head guy is too important to get involved in vigilantism (might get asked to do it every night and then they're boned) and we know for sure the other two were offering letters.

So that means it's extremely improbable that the folks with alibis are originals.

Could be Lieutenant though.

Askthepizzaguy

Every member of the Four Horsemen is highly unlikely to be an original Guardacosta, upon further reflection.

1) Busy last night, (I take it)
2) Would be expected to vig kill over and over. Not good for the starting Spanish.

Since we win with just the starting Spanish caught, I'm ignoring converts except for the case of who cannot be a convert due to game limitations.

Since the Four are at least partially public, they can police their own and should be able to form a voting bloc to prevent their deaths.

Also glad to see an inactive dead. Good choice by the Four.

edit- and yes, he could be Lieutenant. But, eliminating him as an option for the other two is still useful data.

Our best lynches are folks who can possibly be any of the three starting Spanish, for greatest odds of success.

Zack

*looks back at rules*

The Spanish lieutenants can:

kill working in pairs
offer a Letter of Marque by themself
able to "hide flawlessly in protection groups," whatever that means (just that they can participate in group actions?)

The Spanish officer can:

do everything the lieutenants can
scan two peeps per night to determine susceptibility

Spanish converts can:

same as lieutenants

Note: The Spanish automatically lose if all three originals are killed.

With that in mind, the following seems pretty clear:

The original Spanish lieutenants were working in protection groups and/or stealing the first two nights, since there were no mafia kills either of those nights and they are able to "hide flawlessly in protection groups"
The Spanish officer has been acting on his own every night. This eliminates a lot of people.
The lieutenants were recruiting last night.
The converts can be anyone except myself and my officers, even people like TinCow and Diana who were publicly stealing gold.
Eliminating the three original Spanish is our focus. Killing off converts is nice, but ultimately a distraction.

There are a lot of us who can be possibly starting Spanish, I'd be inclined to take JHT off that list though.

Askthepizzaguy
10-06-2012, 01:00
Because the officer can do the same as his lieutenants, the following is not necessarily true:

The lieutenants were recruiting last night.

Because the officer could have done it and one lieutenant could have been doing something else. Would be nicer, cleaner to fit everything together so neatly but that possibility is not eliminated.

Zack
10-06-2012, 01:01
I think it's a lot more likely that the officer was scanning people to determine susceptibility, rather than wasting time doing actions his underlings can perform.

I would be interested to hear people's thoughts regarding taking people "off that list".

Most of us might have reasons to be taken off the list or know that they were stolen from on earlier nights and it would be neat to match the target with the thief. If the night and gold amount matches, I'd be inclined not to lynch them today. That inclination will decrease as time goes on, but it's worth noting here.

The Spanish will have, up until now, been rather disinclined to steal. If my instincts are correct.

Captain Zackbeard clears his throat, calling for silence. The sailors, normally as rowdy and unruly as you'd expect pirates to be, all quiet themselves to listen to the Captain.

Sailors,

This is Captain Zackbeard speaking.

As you can see, the previous update all but guarantees I am town. I could not have been scanning for recruits or converting people, because I was publicly revealed to be guarding my stash of moola. Furthermore, I cannot be converted while Captain, so I am not a convert either. Therefore, I am 100% certifiably town. I'm a Captain you can trust, as well as an unkillable Captain.

The above also applies to my officers - the First Mate, NinjaCow, and the Quartermaster, BSmith. Both have dutifully followed orders, and in BSmith's case especially the targets of his blocks have admitted it before it was mentioned by any officer or myself. Officers cannot be converted. Therefore, BSmith is 100% certifiably town. NinjaCow64 is still almost certainly town, but I won't put it at 100% because I don't know what he was doing Nights 1 and 2.

You can trust Captain Zackbeard and his officers with your utmost loyalty. We're pirates, through and through, and there's a mountain of evidence to prove it.

Therefore, I am asking the following of you, loyal sailors and pirates:

Contact me, Zaccino, in private detailing all previous night actions you have taken, as well as all night actions inflicted on you over the course of the game.

If you were protecting Bob with Jim and Susie last night, I need to know. If you stole from Carlos last night, and Carlos confirms someone stole from him last night, I need to know. THIS HELPS NARROW DOWN THE SUSPECT LIST AND BACK THE SPANISH INTO AN INESCAPABLE CORNER.

As an act of good faith, I will now list all night actions the captain and his officers have taken over the course of the game:

Night 1:

Captain Zaccino guarded his treasure.
First Mate choxorn scanned Person X and Person Y.
Quartermaster BSmith blocked Horseman Chaotix. Chaotix can confirm.

Night 2:

Captain Zaccino guarded his treasure.
First Mate choxorn killed Arjos. choxorn was killed.
Quartermaster BSmith blocked Ishmael. Ishmael can confirm.

Night 3:

Captain Zaccino guarded his treasure. Confirmed in update.
First Mate NinjaCow64 scanned Person A and Person B.
Quartermaster BSmith blocked Tiaxez, who can confirm.

I will also give a small amount of gold to any sailor who discloses their night actions to me privately.

Additionally, I pledge to consider any and all suggestions for scans, night-kills, and roleblocks. In addition to that, I encourage players to try and steal my treasure. I will be guarding it every night, and attempting to steal it, and thus revealing yourself publicly, helps clear your name.

I swear that as long as I am Captain of this vessel, I will use every power at my disposal, every iota of analytical prowess, every bone in my body to find those disloyal to the Presence and eliminate them from our midst. I swear that as long as I am Captain of this vessel, I will give small monetary rewards to those who cooperate with the Captain and his officers in completing the previously stated mission. Anyone who wishes to donate to this reward fund is certainly welcome to do so.

I swear that as long as I draw breath, I will fight against our enemies and protect true pirates. On my word as your Captain. On my word as a pirate. I swear we will win this game.

Captain Zackbeard acknowledges the end of the speech with a nod of his head. "Go on and get back to accusing each other, you lazy bums, or I'll have you swabbing the poop deck!"

Suspects list
Lowest risk:
Askthepizzaguy- I can be found stealing treasure two nights ago. The person I stole treasure from is still alive. I can tell you who I stole from and how much treasure. They can confirm.

ATPG knows as well as any of us that stealing N1 means nothing, yet he frames it as an alibi on par with those which resulted from N3. This is mafia-ATPG trying to hide amongst the semi-cleared. Townie-ATPG would have put himself in a different suspicion tier.

ATPG has also chosen a rather odd time to decide to dispose of our Captain. We just had a night when the Captain was confirmed to be guarding his treasure on a night when two of the three mafia were active. While the Captain could, theoretically, still be the third mafioso, it's looking very unlikely. As much as I really hate to support the same system that frustrated me so much in the first game, the townie in me says that the town would now be best served by keeping Zaccino as an officer permanently. Even those of us who were mostly cleared last night could be converted at some other point, but not Zaccino. He's the most pro-town player we have right now. Yet as soon as the night ended, ATPG wants a mutiny:

So honorable Pirate Lawyer. Or is it Lawyer Pirate?

I had been meaning to speak with ye. As one of yer loyal supporters in the Captaincy selection, I was dismayed to see your selection fail.

You have made plain your intentions to become Captain again. Obviously that means mutiny.

I have a group of folks I can talk into it, or talk out of it. Not many, by my usual standards, I be playin' this one closer to my chest and not engagin' in talk with half the ship like I always do.

But I have some supporters. I presume you still do as well.

The problem I see is that there are too many folks who won't even bother to vote still alive. If I understand it correctly, their presence counts as a vote against mutiny even if they don't vote. I am guessing that is your assessment as well.

What do you want me to do? Do you want me to foster mutinous sentiments sooner, later, or not at all?

Also ye needn't worry about offering me anything in return. I love gold, and being an officer might require me to do things that are all official and stuff, as opposed to guarding it.

The only people who should want to dislodge Zaccino right now are mafia/anti-town and those who want only fun and don't care about losing. ATPG's PM is clearly not of the latter type. He wants to dislodge Zaccino because he knows that Zaccino is about to become an very nasty thorn in his side. This is also consistent with his earlier behavior. ATPG was the person who told 'khaan that Zaccino wanted him dead, resulting in our protection of 'khaan on N2. That is consistent with ATPG attempting to nurture a mutiny (by keeping potential mutineers alive and friendly to him) for a prolonged period. Indeed, I've done nothing to further mutiny other than make a few public comments which were just for fun. ATPG, on the other hand, has been actively working for mutiny for multiple days. I suspect he is scum.

Vote: ATPG

I was also raising my eyebrows when ATPG came out with an alibi of stealing gold and protecting people, thereby taking himself off of his list, even after I explicitly said the Spanish lieutenants were most likely stealing gold and protecting people. Not to mention fostering insurrection and mutiny against an obviously pro-town Captain.

You don't think there's anything suspicious about colluding to mutiny against a clearly pro-town Captain, while simultaneously kissing the Captain's ass? What possible reason is there to mutiny against me at this point?

Because I'm all but confirmed town? Isn't that obvious?

Besides the fact that you may indeed be Spanish, gold is also a factor. There may also be roles better suited to captaincy then you.
How could I possibly be Spanish? The lieutenants were recruiting, and the officer would be a fool to guard his gold rather than scan two people for conversion susceptibility. Plus, the Captain cannot be converted. And no townie in their right mind would risk replacing an assuredly town Captain with a possible scumbag/unknown.

I'll reveal my night actions to people I trust. You are not one of those people. And heaven forbid I want to survive a game. That last question of yours is rather self explanatory.
How can you trust anyone more than me at this point? Isn't gaining gold a significant goal in this game? Why would you give so much away as a safeguard when you're so unlikely to be attacked? Who would kill you at night right now? Further, dying as a vanilla townie isn't the end of the world or anything, either. Nope, not Spanish. Just picked the wrong person to include in a mutiny, figured it was bound to happen eventually.

Why the change of heart, Tincow? You wanted the Captaincy.

You can't seriously believe that ONLY Spanish want a mutiny right now, or that it would be an altogether good idea for a Spanish to make the move to push the Captain overboard.

No, you're looking at a very gold-hungry townie. Zack's worth a lot of gold and I'm at that point where a little bit more gold would be really good for me.

Got my hand caught in the Captain's cookie jar is all. And no, I wouldn't make the allegation that the Captain is Spanish at this moment. Just got too much gold for his own good.

Gaining gold is significant (hence why mutiny should be a viable option at some stage). I'll tell you what I want, when I want, and you can demand all you want, but I network the way I want, you do it the way you want. When do I survive to the endgame Zack?

Vote: ATPG

Oh yes, I'll admit to being quite the two-faced bugger toward the Captain.

EDIT: Go look at ATPG mafia 2. I spent all my credits protecting myself, then stealing, to protect myself again. Go see TWC mafia where I protected myself correctly. I generally prefer to protect other people as doctor, but sometimes you just get a feeling you need to save yourself. I don't like dying in games, and protection is definitely a plus for me, as it stops people killing me, and gets a good alibi to those who are doing the protection.

Before we jump to conclusions too hastily and give out information to anyone who says he can't be guilty, because he was stealing.

The rules say the Spanish can hide in protection groups. That's not the same as the Spanish cannot go out stealing or protect their gold while doing their specific role related actions. I interpreted that part of the rules always as Spanish can hide in protection groups, but can't hide in a vig squad (so they can't go out killing twice each night).

GeneralHankerchief , can we get a clarification on the rules? Is it possible for the Spaniards to perform an individual action (like stealing or protecting gold) in combination with one of their specific actions?

Something is off with you. Now you say that you went out stealing on night 1; what was the lynching of Montmorency about then? Didn't you insist on lynching him, because you did a job for him on night 1 but didn't get paid?

For this entire game, you've been sounding extremely scummy, showing typical mafia behaviour. You also put Zaccino on your innocents list and Visorslash on your possible guilties. Later in the thread, you want protection for Visorslash and even blackmail our Captain into guaranteeing protection for Visorslash for the entire game, else you'll be part of a mutiny against him.

The game is still a bit vulnerable to brute forcing matters even with the rule change.

Note that there are still three attempts we could make on the stealing side of things. And that we have to be caught for it to go against our tally.

My alibi N2 is that I wasn't caught, and I can tell you who I stole from and how much it was. That information is impossible to fake unless me and player X are both guilty.

Even the rule change itself opens up the possibility of brute force solving: A group of ten suspects steals from Zack and gets caught three nights in a row, and they die.

If they refuse, they get lynched. Rather difficult for the scums to combat that unless our luck is extraordinarily bad.

My suggestion would be to avoid committing any of the following actions:

1) No top-down directing of night action groups, even by Zack. All actions must remain voluntary
2) No committing of the same type of group action forced on all players at once. I.E. you must steal and guard.

If you avoid that, then you avoid cheesy brute force solves. And we can just do a normal game.

Andres
10-06-2012, 22:39
Or GH could just allow the Spanish to combine an individual action with a scum action. And we have no guarantee this wasn't already the case at the start of the game, so the information we are now gathering could be useless.

Montmorency

This "brute force" scheme is nothing to argue against, as it would never be viable anyway. Zack does not command the absolute loyalty of all the crew. Many of the crew are not even active enough to respond to his inquiries.

Beyond that, it would take a week to kill everyone off in that manner even with guaranteed action by all parties.

Furthermore, arguing against the idea is one thing, but to use the argument as a tool to restrict the Captain's organizational tactics is scum-talk. Zack should absolutely direct actions, being the one with access to so much data. There is nothing cheesy about large-scale networking.

Just want to say that I will hold to this.

From this moment on, except in exceptional circumstances, I will not make direct orders to anyone except my officers. If you want suggestions, I'm happy to offer you some. But I will not take over in solving the game by brute force by forcing everyone to take certain actions or suffer the consequences, in the interests of fairness and keeping the game fun for everyone.

That said, I strongly, STRONGLY recommend restructuring any protection groups into vig groups. We know for a fact that the Spaniards cannot both participate in vig groups and perform their own actions. Don't make it easy for them to blend in to your protection groups. Either steal from others, guard your gold, or participate in a vigilante group. Again, if you want suggestions, come ask me - but I will not give orders unless asked.

Oh, and don't you dare attack my officers.

Day 4

The revelation that the Guardacosta had been out successfully recruiting sparked a fury of activity aboard the Presence as everybody weighed in with their interpretation of what it all meant, as well as their suggestions of what to do next. All in all it made for a very active, confusing ship that day of voting, leaving Captain Zaccino and his officers to try to sort it out.

Compounding things was the fact that First Mate NinjaCow64 seemed to be less and less on top of things. This seemed like a logical conclusion considering that NinjaCow wasn't as active in the discussion as some and the fact that damn near nobody on the ship could understand what he was saying when he was around. All in all, it meant more work for Zaccino and Quartermaster BSmith.

Stepping into this breach was, naturally, Askthepizzaguy, who seemed to alternate his tune throughout the day, first waving his traditional long list of parchment that went all the way down to his feet and even then was folded a few times which detailed what everyone could possibly have done at night and who that left to lynch, and then later saying how he was openly plotting to mutiny against the Captain because it would be good for his treasure stash (but not yet). Somehow, people were able to make sense out of this behavior and ATPG, while getting mild pressure, survived the lynch.

The day's victim was instead Memnon, who was a big fat question mark on ATPG's list. There had seemed to be quite a bit of backroom discussions going on throughout the day, with several people retiring below decks at various times and then emerging later with different opinions, but Memnon was privy to none of this, instead staying above deck all day and tending to his normal duties as a sailor aboard the Presence when he wasn't directly involved with the voting. He looked puzzled after receiving the first few votes, a look which gradually shifted to anger and then resignation as the day grew longer.

At sundown, Memnon was far and away the leading candidate for the day's lynch. He refused to go without one final word, though, gathering his bag of treasure before he walked the plank. "Fah," he said, "this ship be in such poor condition anyway that I'm sure I'll be able to find a spare piece o' wood that came off this mess and float away to safety! Just watch, you mateys, the current will be takin' me right to Nassau where I can spend me gold right away while ye all intrigue against each other and get killed by yourselves and the Spanish! Compared to that, I'll take a few days o' floatin' on the-"

Memnon's speech was interrupted by Captain Zaccino, who booted him right off the plank. Evidently, the Captain had a couple of his own things to say and was tired of Memnon preempting him.

"Right then," he said. "A bit o' official business. I be doin' some housekeepin' with me officers. NinjaCow64, sorry mate, but ye be demoted back to regular Able Seaman." NinjaCow muttered something incomprehensible at this. "To take his spot, I be relievin' BSmith of his Quartermaster duties and makin' him me new First Mate. To fill BSmith's old role, Askthepizzaguy is now Quartermaster."

ATPG bounded up besides Zaccino and immediately launched into a speech, but Zaccino silenced him after three words. "Shut it, Pizza. Ye were just made Quartermaster, not Lord God o' the High Seas." The captain got a minor chuckle out of the crew, and everyone retired for the night.

Zack would have had to have been starting Spanish as he's not convertible while Captain
Zack has been guarding his gold at night, and was seen in the writeup doing so while two letters of marque were being offered elsewhere by 2 of the starting three spanish.

Those two data points eliminate him as a possibility for 4 of the 5 current Spanish, and the utter foolishness of a starting Spanish making himself Captain and thus, begging for a good scanning from the first officer, or eventual death by mutiny, all add up to "More townie than you are".

Zack was guarding his stash from Tincow in the write up the same night when two of the Spaniards shows up in the writeup. That rules out a setup. So the only way Zack is guilty is that he choosed to guard his stash on the hope that someone would steal from him, instead of doing something vastly more useful (from Spanish perspective) like scanning for more recruits.
So not 100% foolproof, but probably in the 99% range of him being innocent.

I rather thought it was me. After all, I dared to taunt Andres, and he is known for being the guardian of more than just Pirate Ships.

He also can cause Biblical plagues, hurl bolts of lightning at people, and he drinks a mean cask of ale.

If the ship were adrift on a sea of ale, Andres would drink it, so we could walk to shore.

But his Spanish finding powers are second to none.

In other words, folks with no Spanish finding powers whatsoever would find more Spanish than Andres. Hence, he plays second banana to those people.

Night 4

An unearthly mist seemed to engulf the Presence and nothing else on this night, making for very poor visibility aboard. The really old salts among the remaining crewmen were certain that this mist would be the cloak of madness tonight. In other words, there was going to be a bloodbath.

Visorslash was the first target of the night's activities. The attack began rather ingloriously, as one of his assailants outright bumped into him as they were prowling the ship on the lookout for him. There was a grunt of pain, followed by some cursing, followed by shouting. Visorslash could barely make out the figures, now running for him in the mist, but he heard three distinct voices.

Immediately, he bolted in the other direction. Visorslash really wasn't able to formulate a plan in his mind; he was just making it up as he went along. Sensing the edge of the ship through the fog, Visorslash looped around and continued running full speed in the other direction. This time, he full-on crashed into one of his pursuers. The would-be assailant took the worst of it, screaming in pain and crumpling to the ground. Visorslash was only a little bruised up and managed to stay on his feet, running.

Eventually he made it back to safety, no longer pursued. Evidently the injured attacker's two companions decided to help him out rather than give up the chase.

Lyra found himself in a similar situation as to Visorslash: Alone on the ship, at night, and three attackers coming in the mist. Lyra though, by way of his placement, wasn't able to pull Visor's strategy and run to safety. Lyra was already backed into a corner.

"Nothing to do but to fight, I s'pose," he muttered to himself and drew his cutlass, watching as his three attackers did the same as they advanced upon him.

"Right then, I'm already goin' to Hell so I guess a bit o' dirty fightin' won't hurt much in the long run," he said, holding his cutlass in a guarded post around his midsection. Naturally, Lyra's lead attacker and saw this, going high with his attack by raising his own sword well above his body for the kill swing. This was all the opening that Lyra needed, as he kicked the lead attacker right in the privates.

Lyra now stepped back as the other two attackers broke off their assault in order to check on their friend, now moaning softly on the ground, curled up into the fetal position. Disregading Lyra entirely, they peered in through the mist to see how their buddy was doing. "All too easy," Lyra said, smirking for the first time, and he crunched both of their heads together.

With one attacker probably no longer able to reproduce and the other two out cold, Lyra was in no further danger that night, and whistled a merry sea shanty as he went back below deck.

"Oh, you've got to be kidding me," Visorslash said to himself as he saw what was happening in front of him. Due to the sheer amount of volume coming his way, the mist was actually starting to become displaced, so Visorslash could clearly see what faced him: a full six sailors, their swords out. There would be no running circles around this group.

The six attackers charged, and now Visorslash stopped thinking entirely, instead operating solely on instinct. He parried the blows he could, with priority for the attacks that would be fatal. There was no blocking all six, so he let some minor cuts accumulate. Hurt was better than dead, after all, and it bought time for him to come up with a plan.

He knew that it would be impossible to fight off all six attackers using nothing but his sword. Therefore, the only possible way out of this, assuming no squadron of Good Samaritans would charge in to save him, was to use the ship to his advantage. There were plenty of ropes and heavy things aboard. The ropes could help him make a quick getaway when needed and the heavy things could knock out some of the attackers, making it a fairer fight.

Visorslash had now succeeded in making a very rough outline for how to survive this night. Taking a few more minor cuts as he adjusted, he started backing up to the ship's rigging. Using his left hand, he grabbed a rope. Using his right hand, still gripping his sword, he parried the latest attack, knocking the man off balance. Now, taking a risk, he swung his sword high above his head, cutting through a different rope in one fluid motion. The result carried Visorslash up far out of the attackers' reach, putting him out of harm's way a nanosecond before he would have been stabbed in the heart.

At a height that was about level to the crow's nest, Visorslash started to think. The crow's nest, after all, was not the safest place to weather out an attack. If memory served, in the aftermath of the sack of Charleston, the British Special Officer tried the very same tactic. He quickly realized the folly of his action when the Four Horsemen - the *true* Four Horsemen, not this squad of pretenders that had bungled as many kills as they had succeeded in - simply wheeled a portable cannon above deck, aimed it right at the crow's nest, and fired.

Then, the idea came to him all at once. A cannon!

Ignoring his wounds, Visorslash started to climb down the rigging, while his six attackers were simply waiting for him below, their swords drawn. While he was climbing, Visor completely cut away a few strings of rope and pocketed it. About ten feet out of range, Visor more blatantly cut a different rope, causing a large block of wood to start falling... directly over the attackers' location.

"Scatter!" one of them said, and the six of them did, leaving the block of wood to crash down harmlessly and providing Visorslash with enough time to safely get down. He immediately sprinted for the other side of the ship, his attackers in hot pursuit. He opened the door to a different cabin, dashed inside, shut the door, went downstairs, opened another door, entered that one, and shut it.

Three seconds later, the door blasted open, and the six attackers saw Visorslash, bleeding from several wounds, but still with a triumphant look on his face. You see, they were all in the ship's powder magazine, and Visorslash held in his hand a few strands of slowly burning rope.

"Right then," he said (and quickly, for the rope was still burning), "This be endin' in one o' two ways. Either you leave me alone and we go our separate ways, or this rope here burns all the way out and nobody on the ship sees any treasure o' any kind. What'll it be, mateys?"

The six attackers loudly swore and backed away. After a torrid pursuit, Visorslash had checkmated them.

After three days of quietly doing his duty aboard the Presence and really not taking much of an interest in the greater intrigues that went on around him, Thermal finally showed some signs of life late yesterday by lodging a late vote. In the grand scheme of things, it didn't matter that much, as his vote was not for any of the main candidates... but evidently it twigged one man's interest.

That night, Thermal was visited by a large man wielding a sinister-looking cutlass who didn't look much the type for answering questions. This character trait was confirmed when Thermal asked him if this was about the vote he had lodged earlier that day, to no avail.

Thermal parried a few blows, then tried again with a different tactic. "You know what they say about a man with a big sword," he said with a tinge of humor. Perhaps not surprisingly, this approach too accomplished absolutely nothing.

From here on out, Thermal decided that it was best if he just concentrated on fighting, but for the third time this approach wasn't working either as it became clear that Thermal was losing. Of all the rotten luck... Thermal estimated that he was a better fighter than about 50% of the sailors aboard, but this man was clearly in the upper bracket. Thermal held out for as long as he could, hoping in vain that protection would come, but eventually the killing blow hit. Thermal bled out on the decks, his last thoughts being that at least he was able to make a somewhat good joke to his attacker. Who knows, perhaps dark humor would serve him well in the next life...

Captain Zaccino had just finished being debriefed by one of his sailors on a mission that he had assigned the sailor when the attack came. He saw a cannonball get tossed through his window, followed immediately by a man leaping through it. He regarded the Captain coolly for a minute, his rapier drawn. If he expected the Captain to show some sign of shock, he was disappointed.

Zaccino calmly drew his own sword. "I'm a little surprised to see you here," he said.

"La Presence est à moi," the attacker replied, his white teeth gleaming. "You have no idea how far I will go to get her back, Monsieur."

"I guess we'll see," Zaccino said, the the duel was on.

Almost immediately, Zaccino knew that he was outclassed as a swordsman by this attacker. The rapier was a very finely-made weapon, and its quality was equal to that of its wielder. Together, the two made for an extraordinarily deadly weapon. Zaccino was no slouch with a cutlass himself, but this was comparing a bar fight to the Thirty Years' War. Zaccino quickly found himself on the defensive and retreated out of his cabin in search of more room to play with.

As he barely dodged blow after blow, Zaccino started thinking to himself. The power of his Captaincy was determined by the loyalty of his men. His greatest fear was that of a mutiny. But perhaps worse than that, perhaps what he was facing right now, was a coup. His cabin, after all, was farther back on the ship. Any attacker would have to pass by the Quartermaster's and First Mate's cabins to get to him.

Did BSmith and Askthepizzaguy - "Ow!" He was poked in the shoulder, but the wound was very minor - did his officers willingly allow this attacker to pass by? If this was the case, then he was doomed. There would be no help from the regular sailors coming for the Captain. They all assumed they wouldn't need his help to survive.

Zaccino was desperately hanging on as the fight moved to the middle of the ship, above decks. The mist was clearing up by now, allowing the Captain to see every single expression of determination on his attacker's face as he rained blow after blow down upon his target. This attacker obviously wanted Zaccino dead very badly.

Unlike Visorslash against his army of attackers, Zaccino was not even able to formulate a plan. He was just mindlessly trying to parry every single rapier attack that came his way. All of this was tiring him out. His already-thin margin of error became even less existent. Not only was his attacker a better swordsman than him, he also clearly had more stamina...

After about ten minutes of intense swordfighting, the attacker finally scored a major hit, slashing Zaccino from roughly his navel to his armpit. The slash was not terribly deep but still Zaccino went down to his knees from the pain. A second later, he felt the rapier point at his neck. "It was a good fight, monsieur," the man said, almost sympathetically. Zaccino felt the break of pain on his neck as the attacker pulled back for the killing blow, and then -

Two figures burst out of the Officers' Cabins. Zaccino clearly could tell that it was his First Mate and Quartermaster. He made the loudest possible sigh of relief as the attacker stepped back, cursing about the lost opportunity. The four of them stood at the middle of the Presence, facing each other, none making a move. Finally, Zaccino, still on his knees, addressed his officers.

"Did ye allow this man to get through?" he demanded. Both officers instantly and vehemently denied it.

"Good," the Captain continued. "I suppose I should be thankin' ye fer comin' when you did. A second later and I would have been dead. This was a very close call indeed, mateys, but now order must be restored. I tolerate dissent aboard me ship, aye, but there be a clear line between dissent and out-and-out mutiny. And that line was crossed." At this point Zaccino got back up to his feet and drew, for the first time, a very dangerous-looking blunderbuss.

"Now, it only serves to reason that mutiny must be punished. As Captain, it be my duty to set an example in situations like this. After all, when I told my crew that I did not tolerate mutiny..."

He fired the blunderbuss...

"I meant it."

...right at his Quartermaster, Askthepizzaguy.

In the bedlam, the attacker, not believing his luck, slipped off into the night, while Zaccino and BSmith discussed what had just happened. "We be needin' a new Quartermaster," the Captain said, "seeing as how the last one went and got himself shot in the heart. String him up on the mast, BSmith, let the entire crew see what happens to those who would undermine my authority."

"Aye Aye," the First Mate said, and went to work. The rest of the night passed without incident.

That morning, Zaccino called the crew to order and addressed them. "All right, mateys. As ye can see we had two more kills last night. One o' them, as ye can see, is accounted for." He pointed at the mast, where Askthepizzaguy's body was grusomely displayed. "But clearly, there still be crime aboard the ship, so as a result the votin' system will stay. Now, for me next order o' business, I be appointin' TinCow as my new Quartermaster, and may you be more loyal than the last.

TinCow nodded, took a look up at ATPG's corpse, and gulped.

"Now, for some results! Montmorency, Choxorn, and Xenoneb were all loyal sailors and their deaths were all our loss. Arjos, on the other hand, er, seemed to be a woman. I'm not exactly sure what she was doing on board, but her only possession aside from her treasure was a love letter written in French. I be havin' no idea what that's about, seeing as I can't read French. Anyway, there's bound to be some Spaniards farther down the pike, so perk up, lads!"

Yes I'm the Frenchman as you have no doubt figured out. If you want to compare 'cojones' and be bragging about your size, I suggest you make peace with the world, as testicular cancer will come a knocking. :stare:

My death will not help you catch Spaniards, though. The only thing I can offer is my powers for my life, to see this character survive the game. I have lost, I admit it. My only chance was a coup, as it is extremely hard if I don't get captain Day 1 to unseat the captain. I might've gained more by revealing I had a role Day 1, but that's in the past now. I did try to achieve my victory conditions, and I suppose I came closeish to getting them. Zack, you actually told me that you knew I had an investigation power, before I told you, IIRC. I actually knew BSmith had told you before tonight, though I ignored it, hoping that he may have told you that to dissuade you from ordering my death. That I am alive is a minor miracle in itself.

You can act obnoxious, and have me killed because 'I'm a threat to the ship', 'I'm mutinous' yadda yadda yadda. But the truth is, I will never get another chance to unseat you. So finally, I'm asking you to lynch someone else, and I'll do what you wish for night orders. Maybe I should just give up on chasing the Presence.

I still have my life to lose. You haven't taken that from me.

What am I going to do that could harm you? BSmith will not mutiny/coup. It is highly unlikely that TinCow will either. My actions are shown in the writeup unless I investigate. I'm not going to win if I survive, but I would like to the character to survive for epilogue purposes, hence the offer. The ONLY way I can win is if I am Captain by the end of the game. That will not happen, we both know that. But if I could survive to the end of the game, I'd be happy.

No offense, but this statement is absurd. The Frenchman is a third party role that wins solo (or possibly with his woman, who is already dead). A Frenchman victory means a defeat for everyone else. Absent a mafioso to lynch, there is no better alternative. I see this mistake made constantly in games: townies let non-town-oriented third party roles seduce them and 'work' for them for no reason. There is no possible way we could ever trust anything the Frenchman said anyway, so attempting to use him as an ally is pointless.

You can say that I was lying, but we both know that's absurd. Why would I roleclaim a role that's anti town to a townie?

Truth of the matter is, you can lynch me and lose my services. Or you can lynch someone else, and have a vig/investigation role on your side. And if I annoy the mafia too much, they can waste a kill on me, rather then an actual townie.

I've already said I've given up on my VC. It is practically impossible to complete. I am willing to *again* work with the town. (I was planning to anyway as Captain, when I could offer an extra vig kill a night or an investigation.)

What you don't seem to realize is that he can never outlynch us. Even the Mafia, should they gain the upper hand, could easily outlynch him.

The only way is for him to somehow break both the town and the scum. Even assuming he lies about his VC: how? He would be monitored the entire time, and no one is saying that we necessarily should keep him around until the final night if the game goes south.

It's better to lynch a mafioso today, as there are five. Of over two dozen players, we may discount Tincow(for now), Zack, Visor, and BSmith. Out of 22, 4 or 5: that's about a 1/5 chance of blind-lynching scum, which IMO is better than eliminating a potentially useful and known role.

Mistake? I've done it to game-winning effect. A well-managed 3rd-party killer is invaluable, and the last time someone advocated against using one such individual, he turned out to be scum: won the game, even.

My thoughts on the matter are that whilst we could keep Visor alive on a good-behaviour bond, if we were to get to the endgame and need to lynch him to guarantee that he wouldn't make a kill, we'd be essentially wasting a lynch that could have been used to catch a Spaniard. That could potentially prove costly.

In fact, the only case I can even find on why the guy is scum is this post (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?142535-Pirate-Ship-Mafia-II-IN-PLAY&p=2053488040&viewfull=1#post2053488040), in which Zaccino includes him on a list of 12 suspects, bolding him for reasons which aren't explained. There's also a post by ATPG (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?142535-Pirate-Ship-Mafia-II-IN-PLAY&p=2053488044&viewfull=1#post2053488044) supporting removing him simply because ATPG can't read him and wasn't working with him. Neither of those are particularly noteworthy cases, let alone worthy of classifying him as "actually scummy."

If you want my vote on Buddhafish, you're going to have to give me a reason for putting it there.

ATPG wanted Buddhafish eliminated because he was unlikely to show up and vote for a mutiny, thus making himself a threat to ATPG.

Buddhafish is not a good lynch.

Exactly what I thought. How about this one for a Visor-saving alterna-lynch?

Unvote; Vote: Diana Abnoba

Buddhafish is not a good lynch.
To elaborate, this was the reasoning on edse as well.

Actual legitimate suspects:

autolycus
Double A
JoanK
JHT
Jolt
Kagemusha
Kaiser Friedrich III
Lyra

But I were very likely to show up and vote for mutiny :stare:

We don't have much time left, so everyone needs to switch to Buddhafish, even though he isn't the ideal lynch choice.

If you are currently voting for Visorslash: VOTE FOR BUDDHAFISH

If you are currently voting for anyone else: VOTE FOR BUDDHAFISH

If you are currently not voting: VOTE FOR BUDDHAFISH

If you are currently voting for Buddhafish: VOTE FOR BUDDHAFISH

Also, keep in mind that the Spanish want to see Visorslash dead, and will be reluctant to change their votes. He is more dangerous to them than he is to us at this point in the game.

This is the tally I have:

Visorslash - 10
Buddhafish - 5
Diana Abnoba - 1

Oh, very well. Omelette, eggs, etc.

Unvote; Vote: Buddhafish

I admit I would get some small pleasure out of seeing the Frenchman survive into another epilogue.
