Saxon Showdown

9594

The year is 2004, the place Magdeburg. The city had flourished since the reunification of Germany, becoming the capital of Saxony-Anhalt and having its city centre redesigned to befit a modern city of its stature. However this success has attracted some unwelcome guests. Organised crime was fast becoming a prevalent issue across the whole of Germany, nowhere more so than Magdeburg. Families from the likes of Italy, Serbia and Russia had set up headquarters in the city and were turning over huge profits in a variety of legal and, more significantly, illegal trades. The local authorities were struggling to cope and recent attempts to stop the mafia families had resulted in the suspicious death of the town mayor. A new mayor was due to take over in a few days, reportedly with powerful friends and a real determination to rid the city of this menace. Whether he would have the full support of the populace, or whether they would succumb to their inner criminal, remains to be seen.

Rules:
1. To begin with days will be 48 hours and nights will be 24 hours. This may change if I feel it is needed or my schedule makes it necessary.
2. Usual voting rules (must be bolded and in the form vote: Zim), unvotes aren’t needed, I’ll just use your most recent vote. Posts containing votes can be edited so long as the votes themselves aren’t changed.
3. Ties will be decided by the Town Mayor (a role that will be randomly assigned). If he is dead they will be decided by chance; only one person will be lynched each day.
4. Alignment and role will be revealed upon death.
5. Dead players may not communicate outside of the thread and may not reveal, allude to, or even hint at information that has not been revealed in the thread.

6. There are four main factions in the game, three mafia families and the town. Each mafia family is of a specific nationality and will have its own call sign. Neutral parties may or may not exist.
7. The goal of the town is to wipe out the mafia and the goal of the mafia is to wipe out the other mafia families and outnumber the remaining town. More detailed victory conditions will be given in role PMs.
8. There will be a chance of failure for every night action. This can be counteracted by other players sending in orders to help with a specific night action. However if this action fails there is a chance that assisting players may die. If a mafia player assists a town night action (or vice versa) the chance of success will decrease rather than increase. I will not reveal the standard success percentages or the quantitative effect bringing help will have, you’ll have to figure this out for yourselves. For this to occur both the initiator and any players joining must PM me the action and the target AND mention each other in the PM.
9. Experience will be gained for each vote and each successful night action (whether instigated or participated in), for 1xp and 2xp respectively. This experience can be exchanged for new night abilities (see below). It is possible to have more than one night ability but only one can be used at a time. Certain roles will have specific abilities and will not be able to learn new ones. Players assuming these roles during the game will lose any previously held abilities. Players in one of the crime families will require the blessing of their Don to gain new abilities.
10. Some players will have the option to change faction during the game, some will not (such as the Mayor and his friends and the initial mafia members).
11. Each faction will have at least one quicktopic, with further rules explained within.

Ability costs:
Watcher: 6xp
Detective: 8xp (requires watcher ability)
Redirector: 6xp
Doctor: 8xp (requires redirector ability)
Roleblocker: 8xp
Killer: 8xp (requires roleblocker ability)

As you can probably tell from the rules, this game has taken inspiration from Jarema’s Academy of Elemental Magic game and Seamus’ Capo games, so thank you to those guys.

I’d like to get at least 30 players but could probably make do with a few less.

Also just a note to say I will be away this weekend; I should still be able to check in, but apologies in advance if any questions go unanswered for a day or two.

I don't see any reason to change the standard voting procedures. Your proposed method is totally open to abuse - or - more likely mistakes. If you change this to the standard voting procedure, I'll certainly sign up.

The method I use to come up with the final tally is going through the thread in chronological order and marking down who each person has voted for in a spreadsheet, and then count up who has the most votes when I have everyone's vote down. If I went through and tried to do a running tally then sure, there would be problems, but I don't. The way I do it means it really makes no difference whether people write unvote or not as my spreadsheet will still only have a maximum of one vote made by each player.
I guarantee everyone still will unvote out of habit, I just put this in so people who forget to unvote won't be punished, as it really doesn't make a difference to my final tally.

I can see no way in which this method is open to abuse, but if there is please do explain it to me.

He meant the editing part. You don't know if the poster edited the vote or not when you see an edited post.
Exactly. Just don't let people edit their votes and I'm in. Point being, I enjoy reading game threads - they're cool - it's why I play, but I don't want to have to keep re-reading the damn thing every day just to see how people have decided to change their vote. I didn't come up with the 'standard' way it works around here, but it obviously came about for a reason. Why change it?

Ferret
06-13-2013, 18:01
Well then you could have just quoted that part. :clown:

I won't let people edit their votes, just the rest of the post. There is no problem with that and I've played more games here that use that rule than the no editing whatsoever rule. For example, the last large game you played had the exact same rules as this one regarding editing. Many hosts don't explicitly state it like I have but those are the rules that are often followed. This is the standard way...
I can scroll through the forum and point out games you have played in that use the exact same system if that will make you feel any better.

And there are ways to check if the actual votes have been edited, just not by members.

I have debated on this issue before and I firmly stand by this system.

You certainly may.

How similar is this to caps?

Similar in that there are multiple mafia families, each win a Don. Similar in that townies can potentially be recruited into the mafia families. Similar in that detectives may just learn whether a player is guilty or perhaps what their faction or even role is. Similar in many other more generic ways.

Short answer: a little bit :clown:

I'm certainly not claiming this game will be anywhere near as good as a Capo game, just that I have implemented certain aspects into this one.

Start of Day 1

The committee had finally been formed, Mayor Abstain was pleased with the selection he had made and felt confident that this group of gentlemen would soon rid the city of its criminal parasites. He stepped forward to address the gathering crowd;

“Thank you for coming everyone. Today we shall begin the vote on who to imprison for the good of the town. Of course discussion and reason is heartily encouraged, but at this stage I am eager to put these criminals behind bars. If a few innocents go down with them then so be it, it is for the greater good. LET US BEGIN!”

The last sentence was shouted with such passion that members of the crowd looked at each other, unsure of whether they were expected to cheer or something. The odd person clapped a little and one eager citizen let out a whistle but there was a dour mood amongst the committee. Nevertheless, the voting soon began.

Day 1 should end at noon GMT on the 27th (48 hours from now), but as I am moving house that day it will likely be 12 or even 24 hours after that. Apologies for such a needlessly long day 1.

On the off chance that anyone is still interested then reserve players are most welcome to sign up.

Ferret

Mayor Abstain had been walking around checking in with each of the committee members when he realised that there were only 23 people there, rather than 24. It was then that he noticed the fish flapping around on the floor. He felt a fool as realisation struck him, Makrell was not the unusual name of a human, it was a genuine fish. The flapping of the fish gradually slowed as it began to suffocate in the open air. Mayor Abstain waited until it was still before scooping it up, it would make for a good meal later.

Why not interpret this statement to entail that "the Mayor and his friends" and "the initial mafia members" are mutually exclusive sets?

Because that would conflict with the the host's statement that the mayor is randomly assigned. Randomly assigned means anyone can be picked. If anyone can be picked, scum can be picked. Plus this game is specifically based on Capo, and the Capo Director was perfectly capable of being scum.

See, that just invites all kinds of confusion. Someone who hasn't seen this post or has chosen to disregard it could do something like this:

Tincow: while I grant you the possibility of a corrupt mayor, I deem it unlikely.

A new mayor was due to take over in a few days, reportedly with powerful friends and a real determination to rid the city of this menace. Whether he would have the full support of the populace, or whether they would succumb to their inner criminal, remains to be seen.

The implication behind the game's premise is that the mayor is battling against the mafiosi. Whether that is for his own ends or not remains to be seen, but it is more likely prima facie that the mayor is pro-town, or at least a non-mafia, role. The only people who would know for sure are the mayor, his friends and the mafiosi.

I agree that the name itself is an annoyance, but this strikes me as a ready-made excuse. I would not put it past you to, as mafia, to attempt to lynch a known town role day 1 if you thought you had a chance. Abstain's own choices make it easy...

I think caution regarding the mayor ought to be the order of Day 1.

1. Not at all. It could be randomly picked from the set of non-scum players.

That is certainly a possibility, but it's just a possibility. The rules are not sufficiently clear for either of us to be able to prove our theories one way or the other for certain, absent a clarification from the host. This is mafia; when it's not clearly stated in the rules that a person is a townie, the default presumption must be that the person could be scum.

Ferret
06-26-2013, 01:47
Okay just to clarify, the Mayor is a guaranteed townie, and will remain so until he dies or the game is over. By randomly assigned I simply meant that any player could receive that role in the same way they would receive the role of detective, don etc, rather than a role that was assigned via a vote, such as the director in Capo.

My apologies for not making this clearer, it was intended to be public knowledge.

A townie should try to kill scum, not be led around by the nose by self-appointed rulers and dubious offers of cooperation.

Start of Night 1

Mayor Abstain returned to his position on the main stage, concerned with how the day had gone and furious that some of the committee members would dare to attempt to imprison him. It had been a long day, with the citizens of Magdeburg torn between abstaining, voting for a man named Abstain, cheering, voting for a man named after a cheer and hounding down a distinctly Roman fellow.

"A decision has been reached." He pointed at Curio, "take him away boys. A few more days, a few more imprisoned criminals and we can all get back to our lives, I'll see you all in the morning."

Curio walked ahead of his escort, he knew the police station well having worked there before. He went into the cell and sat down without complaint, resigned to his fate.

Tally:
Curio: 5 (FoxLeLay, Chaotix, Yay!, White eyes, Ironside)
Yay!: 4 (Curio, ATPG, TinCow, Monty)

Off to a strong start!

Wouldn't surprise me if the host prefers to remain silent on this, but if the "lynched" are going to be imprisoned rather than executed, perhaps that implies the possibility of releasing them later on? Perhaps there's a special role that can do that, or maybe it's a one-time Mayor ability. Makes me hopeful, at least.

Start of Day 2

El Barto was unable to sleep, troubled by what was happening in the city. He gave up trying and went to his kitchen to get some milk. After spending a good half hour decided whether to go for skimmed or semi skimmed he noticed a figure hiding behind the kitchen door. Panicked he threw an open carton at the knife brandishing figure and scrambled around for some kind of weapon. He needn't bother though as the figure seemed to have some kind of deep set phobia of milk, had dropped the knife and was now running around waving his arms in the air and screaming. El Barto shepherded him out of the door before locking and barricading it and returning to bed with a whole selection of weapons within reach, terrified that he would have more visitors.

Montmorency had also had trouble sleeping and had decided to go for a stroll in a nearby park. On his way round he noticed a glint in one of the bushes, excited that it might be coin or something valuable he skipped over. When he was around 5 metres away he stopped dead, realising that the shiny object looked very much like the barrel of a gun at this distance. Sure enough it began to fire. Fortunately for Montmorency the would be killer's vision was heavily obscured by shrubbery and he was able to avoid the bullets and sprint back to his house, safe for tonight at least.

Chaotix was not so lucky. He woke up early and helped himself to a bowl of sushi for breakfast. The sun was only just rising as he heard a knock at his door. Confident that he could deal with any trouble he answered without looking outside first. He was met by two figures holding AK-47s, which immediately began to unload straight into Chaotix's torso. Once Chaotix's bloody mess of corpse had become barely recognisable the two men finally stopped firing. One of them withdrew a pack of cards and flicked one towards the corpse, with it landing right over the Japanese man's eyes. It was the 2 of spades.

The citizens of Magdeburg reassembled in the City Hall a few hours later, with one committee member missing and two looking considerably more fearful than they had the previous day. The voting will continue.

Day 2 will end at 22:00 GMT on the 30th (~48 hours from the time of this post).

The town was split, should TinCow be lynched for his campaigning against the Mayor, or should Yay! be lynched for having a silly na... I mean for acting all scummy and stuff. Unfortunately for Yay! the mayor was of the latter opinion so what seemed a tie was not a tie at all, and Yay! was promptly thrown into the cells alongside Curio, who was clearly not enjoying his stay. After the cell door had been secured the committee members returned home, each praying that this night would not be their last.

Start of Day 3

Montmorency lay awake, terrified by the attempt on his life the previous night. He had barred his door and boarded up his windows but that would only make things worse. The first he knew of what was happening was a sudden flash of light through his door, which was soon followed by thick smoke spreading into his bedroom and billowing above his head. Someone had set his house on fire. He sprinted out of his room and, knowing that someone would be watching the front door, went instead to a window at the back of his house. Snatching up the hammer that he had left there after boarding up earlier in the day he went about tearing his barricades down. By the time he had removed the wood and smashed through the window he could feel the skin on his back bubbling from the heat. But he was alive, he had survived another night.

Don Csargo had been stalking the streets all night, checking up on the various legitimate and illegitimate businesses that he ran in the city. With new recruit Ironside shadowing every step he took, he felt invincible and walked with real swagger. That feeling vanished after he exited a French restaurant that his family ran. He was halfway through telling Ironside a racist joke involving snails and garlic when a flagpole came swooping down from above the restaurant doorway. It ran right through Ironside's shoulder and impaled him into the ground, with the now bloodied French flag it held swaying in the breeze. A figure shouted "vive la France" from above Csargo, but soon vanished into the night.

Csargo, now alone and unprotected, broke into a swift jog, hoping to return to the Serbian headquarters before the figure, or any of his other enemies, could catch him alone. He was not so lucky. As he rounded a corner he ran straight into two men brandishing AK-47s. His hand immediately went to his trench coat in an attempt to draw his pistol but the Russians were too quick and Csargo was mowed down in the street. One of the figures stooped to leave a card showing the three of spades on Csargo's corpse before both strolled away, AKs rested on their shoulders.

edse heard the gunshots in the distance and quickened his pace. He had been busy that night himself, and was eager to get home before he ran into trouble. Just a few minutes away from his house he saw two shady figures, even though they spoke in hushed voices he recognised their accents as Serbian. Panicking he attempted to sprint past them. He felt the stinging pain in his leg before he heard the bang and his head was spinning as he fell to the ground. The two men walked up to him and as one casually slit edse's throat, the other pulled out a red rose, which he placed gently onto edse's now motionless chest.

A good night for the town, overall. :applause: Or at least it was a bad night for the Serbian mafia.

So let's do some math based on what we've learned today. The Serbian don and a new recruit were killed, but he write-up mentions two more Serbs who killed edse. Unless one was a recruit from a previous night, that would indicate 3 mafia per family (or more, but 3 seems more reasonable), which would mean a total of 9 mafia at start. Plus a yakuza. That leaves, at most, 13 townies to begin with. Pretty bad odds.

At this point, I say the "best" candidates for lynch are those who voted for Yay/Jarema last round. Those would be edse, TinCow, Lazy McCrow, and Visorstain. We can safely(?) rule out Abslash. TinCow was acting out of self-preservation, so I can't blame him for that. Between edse and TinCow, the later's posts seem slightly more scummy. Which probably means he's innocent. A good night for the town, overall. :applause: Or at least it was a bad night for the Serbian mafia.

TinCow was acting out of self-preservation, so I can't blame him for that. Between edse and TinCow, the later's posts seem slightly more scummy. Which probably means he's innocent. But, vote: TinCow nonetheless.

I'm not gonna pretend to remember the exact minutes of composition, but I'm fairly certain that after I typed paragraph 2, I turned my attention toward something else (most likely wrestling) before beginning paragraph 3. When I came back to typing, I was done analyzing write-ups and was concerned with who to vote for, so I was only paying attention to the last vote tally. The fact that edse was dead slipped my mind by this point; he was just one of the four who voted for Jarema. I admit that I deserve some criticism for the general blunder of that post, but you two are reading too much into my choice of words.

Riedquat, of all the players in this game, you ought to realize my capacity to fumble words and names. :tongue2: Recall El Barto's Random-ice-cream-flavored Friends of the Friends game? At some point in the mafia QT, I was attempting to make a suggestion about who to kill, and I got the names horribly mixed up to the point that it didn't make any sense? I remember because you were the one who pointed out how confusing it was. I'll find the link later if you want, I've used up all my lunch break for today.

I would like everyone to heed Tincow's display of his own apparent priorities here.

He pursues me on a throwaway comment on my rivalry with Pizza (who hasn't made himself visible for the better part of a week) rather than a PISsy post in which I soft-claim knowledge of who attacked the Serbian mafiosi last night.

He raises no quarrel with my words here:

Why would the Russian Mafia demolish the Serbian Mafia?

Yet how do we know that it was the Russian mafia and not the French? How could I know that?

Yet Tincow passed it over. Such an analytical guy - how could he miss it?

Or did he simply find that it would be otiose to contest the line as it would draw attention to his own implied knowledge?

But anyway, here's what the writeup says:

A figure shouted "vive la France" from above Csargo

Perhaps he's French himself?

So it seems Tincow fell directly into my perfect trap. :smug:

This guy is clearly a mafioso of some kind and needs to be lynched.

So many choices today! It's quite a pleasant surprise for D3.

Anyway, vote: autolycus. I am always suspicious of somebody who's first, last and only argument for voting somebody is that they're acting too townie (it was a toss of a coin between you and Lazy, incidentally). SalmonSoil was also in contention due to vote-only posts, which are a pet peeve of mine, but I prefer to vote for somebody who is a possibility to get lynched when my suspicions are shared.

I enquire about posts that look odd to me. So far today two caught my eye, yours and B-Wing's. I thus probed about both of them. Apparently you think that your relationship with ATPG is some kind of given, but I have no knowledge of it. If you've got some kind of long-running rivalry with him, it's news to me. Earlier in the game you made some comment about networking, and today you essentially throw an FOS on ATPG but don't follow it up with anything. That looks scummy to me, like you're trying to toss some scum on him to keep him safe from night attacks without actually moving for his lynch. As for the "PISsy" post, if that qualifies as PIS then that term has lost all meaning around here. As I read it, your post was nothing but a joke. I don't even recall reading anything about a Russian faction even existing in the write-ups, so when I saw a Russian reference I read it entirely as humor. The fact that I assumed it was a joke should have been pretty obvious from my horrible pun response.

Regardless, you do appear to have answered my question, albeit in a roundabout way. Mafioso typically are not quite so aggressive against me either, so you've got that in favor of your townieness.

From the Night 2 write-up:

Also, from the OP:

Either you're being very disingenuous, or you really didn't read the writeup too carefully.

Honestly, I stopped reading most write-ups a couple years ago. I was obsessed with the things when I first started playing but my text-wall write-up analysis more frequently led in the exact wrong direction. For a long time now I've simply read posts and looked for responses that looked odd. I'll go back and read the write-ups later in the game if it seems pertinent at the time. In this game, scum is scum, at least so far, so I've put no effort whatsoever into trying to differentiate between them.

I've never quite admitted to this because I tend to play most frequently in Andres' games. He produces the best write-ups ever, but I'm still too lazy to read the things most of the time. I think he would WoG me if he knew that. :creep:

Start of Day 4

B-Wing was out having a drink, trying to take his mind of the plight of the city, when the trouble started. He knew something was up when the barman disappeared, leaving him alone in the room. Shortly after two men in trench coats entered the bar. B-Wing reacted quickly and just as they were drawing their AK-47s he launched himself over the bar and into cover. LazyMcCrow began to empty his clip into the bar, confident that B-Wing had no escape but before his accomplice could reach the end of the bar to flank their prey, two more men entered the room. This wasn't part of the plan and LazyMcCrow panicked. The two newcomers kept their cool and despatched Lazy coolly as he sprayed bullets mostly into the ceiling. As B-Wing and the Crow's accomplice bolted into the night, the Crow's killers laid a single red rose onto his corpse and strolled out into the night.

Darth Feather stopped dead in his tracks the moment LazyMcCrow was killed. He had always been close to his brother and could feel in his gut that something had happened, despite being on the other side of the city. Troubled, he laid down his Russian red lightsaber and walked to the window of his office. Strong Belgian beer had dulled his senses and the sound of the Imperial March blaring out of Darth Feather's speakers drowned out the footsteps of the intruder. It was a simple enough affair to slit the Russian's throat. After Darth Feather's body had stopped twitching the intruder laid a gold florin in between his eyes and left.

Scum. Waited too long to self-save. Not legitimately town enough motivation. Should have at least declared his intentions to lynch Auto sooner.

I FoS'ed autolycus before anyone had even voted for him, so I didn't have any qualms about lynching him in place of myself. But I didn't have any "intentions" to lynch him unless it was necessary, and announcing such ahead of time would only have jeopardized my opportunity to do so. Definitely sneaky, but not really scummy.

Evidence, you say! Well, you know, I started out as a detective in the last mafia game I played (And Suddenly by Andres). And you know what happened? I turned into a murdering psychopath!! So clearly, the wise move here would be to lynch this so-called detective, just to be safe, before it's too late. As Bill Murray's character discovered in Groundhog Day, if we do not learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it.

Start of Day 5

El Barto was strolling through the city centre as the sun set over Magdeburg. Whilst walking he noticed a mime pretending to pull a rope in the street. He stood watching the mime for a while, confused as to why such a profession would even exist. He continued on his way home but when he rounded the next corner he came face to face with BSmith, who had a gun in hand. BSmith let off a few shots immediately but El Barto reacted exceptionally quickly and avoided being hit. He rushed BSmith and knocked him to the ground, sending the gun skimming into the road. After a brief struggle El Barto withdrew the pen knife he recently taken to carrying and wedged it firmly into the neck of his would be killer. Shaken, he turned round and ran back the way he came, deciding that a different route would be safer if the mafia were out to kill him. The mime was still there and had now formed his imaginary rope into a lasso. He jokingly flung it in El Barto's direction. In no mood for joking around El Barto attempted to continue running but after passing the mime he felt a sharp tug around his neck. Looking down he saw a rope wrapped around his neck, leading to the hands of the mime. Struggling for breath the mime drew ever closer as El Barto's world began to turn black. The last words he heard were "vive le France".

Day 5 will end at 22:00 GMT on the 7th (~24 hours from the time of this post).

I can't imagine there's a townie left amongst you - Why has the game not yet ended? You're all onh-hee-honh and ooh-la-lah.

Of course that, assuming someone doesn't start serving buffalo-wing pizza, I'm voting for Mr. B-Wing.
Quoted for toxx.

Very good work, El Barto. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten by the people who will analyze the actions of all the scum known thus far.

Vote: B-Wing

The Serbians are surely finished.

The following night action will be my last of the game, as I am going away for the end-phase. Any townie who needs me should contact me before it's too late.

Why to frame him if this course of action was already decided from yesterday?

Abstain was strolling around the City Hall, sharing opinions with various committee members. He was delighted that the Serbians had be removed as a threat but knew that there was still a lot of work to be done. B-Wing gave him a hostile look as he approached but the Mayor was used to this kind of treatment and continued towards him anyway. B-Wing picked his moment perfectly, making sure that no one was looking when he smashed the Mayor round the head with a heavy hole puncher and threw his body to the ground. Shouting that the mayor had tripped he drew the other committee members over. They were not so easily convinced however and it was not long before accusations of the murder were shot in B-Wing's direction.
The voting would continue.

My own suspicions haven't lessened any by the fact that our reliable source has already suggested that B_Wing was a sure mafioso.

Let's put barbecue sauce on him.

Vote: B_Wing mostly for the xp at this point. The rare time when I might advocate for a massive wagon.

The Desperate Plea and the Decent Proposal
Yes, I killed Abstain, and yes, I am the French murderer. Abstain's day-kill was 1 of 3 single-use abilities I possess, in addition to the night kills. My win condition is to achieve a victory for any faction other than town, which we would presumably share, or be the last man standing.

If my assumptions about mafia numbers are correct, then there should be at least 3 Italian mafia left and 1 Russian, possibly more if they've recruited. Maybe another neutral. I propose that the remaining non-town aligned players band together and ensure our own survival. With judicious night kills and unified voting, we can take down the town in a couple turns, and then just let it come down to a good old-fashioned gang war! I realize that prospect might sound more appealing to the Italians than to the Russian(s), but how does it compare to the current situation? If Abstain's claims were true, the town have a detective and a network. Would you rather contend with that?

I realize it is late in this round to be proposing a new bandwagon, especially since it's highly possible that we might only be able to achieve a tie. But you'll have tonight to think about it, too. I'll wait til then to make my suggestion about how we can coordinate this in a way that allows both families to remain unknown to each other until the town is eliminated. So in the meantime, just think my suggestion and decide if it would benefit you.

You have severely miscalculated. The scum are outnumbered. Moreover, if there were even one more scumbag than townies, not one of the former would be the first to reveal himself.

Edit: Oh, I see. He can survive a lynch. Townies, join me in attacking him tonight.
