It is called other things in other places; here in the USA it is Veteran's Day.

We honor those who took their place in the line, answering the call of their nations, and who in their hearts were defending home and loved ones. The politics leading them to war and the myriad other risks of service are debatable -- at times detestable -- but their service is not and should be honored.

As a history buff, I have always felt a special sense of sadness for the era that was ended by the Great War -- "A whole generation who were butchered and damned" indeed.
