This can not be!

I have become accustomed to waiting for EB2: Total Wait!
The changes I'd be forced to make to my day to day life if EB2: Total Wait ever actually gets published is unacceptable!

I think its genius that you release EB2 just as school starts, so that you can destroy all of those college kids' grades by giving them EB2 to spend their time playing.

I think its genius that you release EB2 just as school starts, so that you can destroy all of those college kids' grades by giving them EB2 to spend their time playing.

I think it's actually intended that college kids with a bit of a thing for history will be inspired for their studies (if relevant), but also for the rest of their lives' aspects, by what can be achieved through dedication, enthusiasm and quite a bit of work. :-0 (WOW)
I have been always somewhat against volunteer work seeing how most of the time it is exploited, but EB changed that a bit for me. I genuinely wanted to contribute to this project. And I am no kid... have not been for quite some time...

Though I am wondering if I should change the thread title to "open beta release data confirmed", for the sake of accuracy.

I struggle with that terminology. When we release v.72 of EB1, THAT was a beta. It was buggy and crashed frequently. It was still fun, but the stability issues were frustrating. Not until v.74 (about 4-5 months later) were most of the worst CTDs tracked down and removed. That was a fairly complete game, but we still called it a beta as it was pre 1.0. Another 7 months go by and the team releases v.80. Huge improvements across the board, but randomly buggy and technically still a beta. Finally a few updates later, we released v1.0. Was that "finished"? Were all the bugs gone? No to both questions.

For me personally something is an alpha when it's not even playable...just a mess. A beta is full of bugs and likely to crash at any time. So where is EB2 in all this? We'll have 200 units out of a planned 500, so on that basis we're only 40% done. On the other hand the game hasn't crashed in MONTHS. So what is it? From my perspective, it's incomplete. And it will remain so for years to come, in all likelihood.

But will it be fun to play? Will it continue to be upgraded in various areas? Yes. So people should enjoy it for what it is, and help identify some things that can make it better. But it will not be a chore. It will be immersive and very interesting. The historical accuracy alone is breathtaking to me. Head and shoulders above what we did in EB1.

So people can call it anything they want, but we think you'll enjoy it.

Ludens

I struggle with that terminology.

That's good news. For the record, though, the "terminology" comes directly from the twitter message.

Kull

:laugh4: Quite true, and we'll almost certainly call the first release a beta. I just wanted to go on record with my thoughts on this because when most people hear the word "beta", they expect a buggy, unstable product. That won't be the case here, although it will be obviously incomplete in several areas.

Kull Wow. Here I thought that EB1 was impressive enough, and now you give us this. It seems that EB2 will be even more awesome than EB1 AND there will be fewer problems with CTDs even in the mod's early open beta stage. Great news.

INCOMPLETE. That is the key word you folks have to remember. EB1 has all the bases covered and EB2 is not there yet and won't be for some time. However, it has all the added benefits of the M2TW engine and we are working VERY hard to make is as immersive as possible upon the first release. That said it is remarkably stable for a 1st release product, and the team deserves a lot of kudos for that. Many months were spent in isolating and killing bugs that had been with us for years. And the worst ones were fiendishly difficult to track down.

V.T. Marvin
05-26-2014, 21:49
To reinforce Kull's point - the fact that we are not currently experiencing any persistent CTD-causing bugs does not mean that there not any in there. It is impossible to test the game as thoroughly and to experience all possible permutations of different factors as would be the case after massive testing once the game goes public. We do have faith in our product, we trust that the community will enjoy it, BUT do not let the hype to get the better of you so that you won't be disappointed once you get to actually play the game yourself. The first release will hopefully by fun and enjoyable, but indeed an incomplete version of what are we aiming for...

I joined this forum for EBI and EBII. I used to be very active in here but as the years went on, I became a lurker. Never lost hope though, I have always checked this forum at least once a week for the past 6 years.

Very happy to see the efforts of so many over so long finally come to fruition.

If the world ends on July 31st, we shall agree here and now to meet at a place roughly half way between where we both live and together we will fight our way through the hordes of survivors to the homes of the EB creators and find EB2 on their PC's.

Bring weapons and food.

Ave people!

I have to say i have lost track of the state of this mod back in '08, '09, but have thought of it every once in a while since then. When i bothered to check it out after a couple of years, i found to my amazement, that it is almost here. I am SO grateful to the modding team of old and new, that you/they didn't give up on this long awaited project. I can only suspect that great perseverance and determination was needed from those individuals who have sacrificed their free time to make EB II a reality.

My helmet -is down to you- great sers.

I would if I could but figure out how Twitter works. I tried signing up and learning how to use it once (I wanted to send abusive messages to The Pope and Gary Barlow) but I honestly couldn't figure out how the hell that thing works. I even googled how it works and really tried to learn but it was just so unnecessarily confusing to me.

Don't get too excited. The devs say 'release in August' but it's safer to assume it will be a lot closer to the 31st of August rather than the 1st.

I'm hoping it'll be August 1st. I know it's wrong of me to hope that because I'll probably end up being disappointed.

Don't hope that. From a reply I made over in the TWC forums:

Are you guys going to announce the day as well or is it gonna be a surprise release?

The month we can 99% control, the actual date is going to depend on a number of factors. Without going into too much detail:

- There is a stop work date in early August (no more new content after that date)
- There is a follow on period of a few days where all team members will play the final version to ensure the last minute "content rush" did not insert any previously unknown CTDs
- If needed, a short period to trace down and fix these new problems (should they be found)
- Release the result to the installer creation team.
- Installer built and released to the team.
- A brief period to test the installer.
- Release the mod to the public.

As you can see, there's a lot of moving parts there, so it would be foolish to try and lock this down to a day - at least until we know for sure that everything is ready and it works. Which won't be more than a day or so before the release, anyway.

Kull

Based on what Kull just said, I would be shocked it EB was out in August.

You shouldn't be. I personally have updated the build with 5 major changes in the last two days alone, and none of them caused a CTD. Our system for controlling updates is extremely rigorous. All the older, truly nasty CTDs were cleaned out of the build by the first part of the year, and those were VERY hard to find. New ones however, are usually spotted almost immediately. Even if multiple people have made updates on the same day - even to the same file - it is VERY easy to test and figure out which person's update caused the problem. The system will even give you a side-be-side comparison of the before and after files, highlighting only the sections of text that were changed, so it's piece of cake to spot the issue.

So yes, we are building in some time to stop and playtest for a few days so we can catch obvious problems and possibly even those that might be hidden deeper, but it's only to find CTDs, not seek out content omissions (those are a given). August is basically a done deal, barring something catastrophic.
