First tournament (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?120020-Gameroom-Rock-Scissors-Paper-tournament-Concluded)
Second tournament (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?124371-Gameroom-Rock-Paper-Scissors-tournament-II-Concluded)
Third tournament (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?141522-Gameroom-Rock-Paper-Scissors-Tournament-III)

Yeah, it's time for another. But this time, by popular demand, I'm adding a wrinkle. :charge:

Rules:
Pretty simple really. I create the one-on-one matchup, each participant sends me a PM saying which one they pick. Rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, paper beats rock. In the case of there being a tie, players will also send me a second choice in the PM. If there's still a tie, then the game ends in a draw.

Tournament structure will be a single round robin which will determine seeding. The knockout round will be your standard seeded ladder structure, with the top four seeds earning first-round byes. In the round robin, players get 1 point for a win, 0 points for a loss, and 0.5 points for a tie. There are no draws in the knockout round, obviously.

BETTING RULES ZOMG IT'S HAPPENING:
If you don't want to test your skills at Rock/Paper/Scissors, or if you weren't able to sign up in time, or if you did sign up but want to take part anyway, I'm adding a betting feature for this game. Basically, anytime you want (even if the tournament has already started), just indicate your interest and I'll start you off with 100 gold (note: this sum is not transferable to future Pirate Ship Mafia games Barto). You can then wager on... whatever you want, so long as you have somebody to take your bet - I'm too lazy to be an actual bookie and establish odds, etc. At least not right away.

Transactions can be confirmed publicly or privately, as long as both sides agree on the stakes.

The person with the most gold at the end of the tournament is crowned, uh, Gameroom betting champion, I guess.

Post here to indicate interest in the tournament, betting, or both. For the tournament, I can take any number of players so long as we get at least 8, though I'll probably cap it at 13. Best of luck to all, and happy WIFOMing!

Count me in for both.

I played the first (7 yrs ago) and the third one.
Played the first tournament like the South African cricket team. Entering the last round of preliminaries at 1st position and then losing the next 2 games to exit the tournament when the pressure was on! :laugh4:
Played poorly in the third tournament and again lost the first knock out match!
I am looking to better my record and go all the way! :soapbox:

Be very afraid! :devilish: (:thinking:What is he talking about connection? Why is he frightened? ~)

On the fence about playing? Here, have some testimonials.

The tension! THE TENSION!!!

Man.... I'm kind wishing I'd been able to sign up for this. Never seen such an exciting rock/paper/scisssors tournament.

I've been wanting to participate in this tourney. Hopefully I shall be in the sequel.

whoa... Only my stomache has had more upsets than this tournment!

Wow.... this is some awesome rock paper scissors going on...

Waiting for the sequel and rooting for underdog!

I shouldn't have entered this. I got way too caught up in it.

Thank you GH for this fantastic game... I actually would check the results while lying in bed every morning before doing anything else. Even Facebook.

EPIC!!!!

Awesome tournament, awesome write-ups! Very entertaining even if you didn't participate!

I'm actually excited about this strangely. :beam:

I hate this game so much right now.

There's no way this should be as satisfying as it is.

I just have to say that I am actually lurking this with great interest. The writeups are really good, keep it coming! :2thumbsup::beam:

Yes, to bad I hadn't noticed this earlier, I'd have signed up :wall:

Awesome. It's remarkable how compelling this is.

Oh my giddleys. I'm actually pretty excited about this :wideeyed:

CURSE YOU ATHEOTES!!!!

This suspense is killing me!

That was so much fun.

Thanks GH for hosting this; it's been significantly more fun than I realised a RPS tournament could be! :beam:

Per tradition, I'm going to reserve one of the three remaining spots to defending champion Visorslash, who I know is around considering he's thanked a couple of posts in this thread. However, if he declines to participate, or if he doesn't respond in the next 24 hours, then I'll open it back up to the general public.

You will note that this tournament has 13 entrants instead of 12. The top four seeds will still receive first-round byes in the knockout round, but last place, the #13 seed, will miss out on the knockout round entirely. This is done to patch out an exploit that a certain person WHO WILL REMAIN NAMELESS used in order to go into the knockout round while purposely not scoring a single point in the round robin.

It is now Day 1! Scheduled matchups for today:
Zack vs. Csargo
Myrddraal vs. Sigurd
Visorslash vs. edse
Winston Hughes vs. atheotes
seireikhaan vs. Al Sipsclar
El Barto vs. BSmith
Jolt (bye)

Please PM me with your choice for either Rock, Paper, or Scissors. In addition, please send me your backup choice in case the first throws end in a tie. Once I get all results, I will resolve them immediately. Good luck! :viking:

Betting Start

This is going to be a little ad-hoc, so bear with me. First of all, you can sign up to bet at any point during the tournament, even if you've missed out on signups/only discovered the thread halfway through.

Everyone who signs up to bet starts with 100 gold - no rebuys allowed. Probably. You can wager on anything you want to, publicly or privately, but both/all sides must confirm to me - again, publicly or privately - in order for the bet to go through.

Bets do not have to be even on both sides: i.e. you can set up a wager where you can put up 1 gold saying that an unlikely event will happen (exactly four draws in one round, let's say) and somebody can take that bet but put up 10 gold. This could work out either way: on one hand, it's a good way to pick up small amounts of money, but on the other hand it could be a way to take a big gamble and have it pay off.

I will let you know when I receive all orders and begin my writeup. Bets made in the interim will be allowed, but there might not be enough time for all sides to agree unless you're online at the same time.

Various tournament errata:
- No #1 seed has ever won the tournament
- Each tournament has been won by someone from a Commonwealth nation (twice Australia, once UK)
- Sigurd has appeared in all four tournaments and made at least the semifinals each time, though he has never won
- atheotes and seireikhaan have appeared in three tournaments, though neither has made a semifinal
- This will be the second tournament for Csargo, BSmith, Zack, Visorslash, and edse. Visorslash is the defending champion.
- Out of the 32 entrants in the previous three tournaments, one person has made it through the round robin stage without any defeats

I can't think of any others at the moment but you should all get the idea of what you can bet on by now.

Bettors:
Zack - 100
El Barto - 100
BSmith - 100
Al Sipsclar - 100
atheotes - 100
edse - 100
Csargo - 100
Myrddraal - 100
Winston Hughes - 100
seireikhaan - 100

Jolt - 100 (unconfirmed)

Initial throws only, or factoring in rethrows?

edse

Initial throws only, or factoring in rethrows?

With rethrows. I misscalculated though, I meant the double (the probability is very high and no one should take it). The correct bet is 20 gold on a total of 6 or more rocks thrown in the first round.

Zack
02-23-2016, 23:14
I'll take the bet against.

Al Sipsclar
02-23-2016, 23:24
6 or more in 24 throws is still like 86% chance. I want a share in your profits, so I'll also bet 20 with you and hedge my chances with 2 gold against. ~;)

It's only 12 throws + possible rethrows. Should be around 16 throws in total.

edse
02-23-2016, 23:40
I think the bet is quite fair. I quickly calculated that the expected number of rocks is 5,33 but I haven't calculated the probability.

Al Sipsclar
02-23-2016, 23:51
For 16 it's only 45%, so come back, Zack, we play fair here.

Zack
02-23-2016, 23:57
You're assuming random, but 2 people are betting on it...

GeneralHankerchief
02-24-2016, 00:56
So, just to ensure I've got it right:

edse is betting 20 gold that at least six Rocks are shown.
Al Sipsclar is betting the same.
Al Sipsclar is also hedging by betting 2 gold that less than six Rocks are shown.

So, assuming no further betting on this issue, if we have 6+ rocks then edse is up 2 and Al Sips is down 2.
And if we have >6 rocks then edse is down 20 and Al Sips is up 20.
If someone else was to get in on the bet then edse's share would not move but Al Sips would receive less than 20 if we had >6 rocks shown (-edit- but he'd also be down 20 from losing the other side of his hedge)

Correct?

Told you this would be ad hoc

Al Sipsclar
02-24-2016, 01:10
replace ">6" with "<6", then yeah.
and I'll receive part of my 20 proportional to my 2

The mind boggles... I probably should know more about how this betting thing actually works before throwing myself into it.

Can I bet with skewed odds?

i.e. I'll take 10 if fewer than 6 rocks are shown, but give away 5 if 6 or more show?

GeneralHankerchief
02-24-2016, 15:36
Yes, but you have to get someone to agree to those stakes.

There are 42 gold currently wagered. If you bet 5 against 6+ rocks showing up, the pot will become 47 gold, and if <6 rocks are thrown, you and I will split it according to our wagers, 5:2. That is you get 34 gold, and I get 13 gold. If 6 or more are thrown, you lose your 5 gold bet.

Al Sipsclar, I don't think this betting system works very well in this case (your bet made Winston's possible profit to drop from 10 to 5 without him confirming it). The bets work better if they are made between only between two people.

I think starting with next round people could say that they'll match all bets or something to that effect in order to get around this.

-edit- Alternatively, I could look up "how to be a bookie" once I'm able to do so on a computer where I won't get fired for adding it to my search history.

Winston Hughes

I assumed any offered bet on an outcome would need to be met with a bet from somebody else on the opposing outcome.

Thus, Zack and I have already set our stakes against one another, and Al needs someone else to step up and bet against his 10 on Myrddraal for his wager to be activated, with GH needing only to act as bank (and referee in case of dispute).

Zack

Ok, I probably misunderstood (or didn't even try to understand) the betting system that was offered. But the shared pot and changing outcomes is what makes the betting interesting. If it's only the private bets between two people then meh.

GeneralHankerchief
02-24-2016, 21:33
I might be overthinking. Maybe it would be easier if I split it into two categories:

- General bets, where bettors only have to say how much they're wagering that a certain outcome will happen, and then they get what they get out of it depending on how many people are involved. Bets that don't get taken obviously go back to the initial person regardless of the outcome.

- Specific side bets between two people of course.

Zack
02-24-2016, 21:40
Maybe GH can introduce prop bets (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proposition_bet) (e.g. something like edse's bet, x number of draws this round, y number of upsets, that sort of thing) that everyone can bet on, creating a prize pool that gets distributed out to the winners.

This sounds like a good compromise.

I'm still waiting for someone to take my bet for 20 gold on a total of more than 6 rocks thrown in the first round. It's a somewhat fair bet I can assure you! The probability for more than 6 rocks in only the initial throws is only 0,17.

In the meantime I can pool 10 gold on sigurd winning on day 1

Day 1 results

The world had changed since the last tournament in 2012. After the stadium went dark, people looked everywhere to fill the void that Rock/Paper/Scissors had left in their hearts. Some turned to vice, immersing themselves in all manner of activity in an attempt to replicate what was lost. Some turned to more productive ventures like starting a family. Still others moved on to following other types of games, but those were poor substitutes for the genuine article. Most people, though, spent the four years in a state of limbo. They moved through their lives as almost an automaton, as if they had no meaning without the tournament.

Everything changed, though, with the announcement. After nearly four long, dark, cold, miserable years, the stadium turned the lights on again. Gamblers started to see an uptick in action. The birth rate was set to spike. Rock/Paper/Scissors was back.

An expansion to the stadium and a structured pricing scheme meant that all manner of society's classes could go see the tournament, from the super-wealthy who wanted to be there because this was the place to be, to the down-on-their-luck who scrimped and saved to give themselves a good memory. But one thing was keeping them all in common: They all made noise.

The thirteen contestants (including Jolt, who is on bye this round) certainly notice this as they emerge out. Some have been there before. Visorslash gets a big grin on his face as he remembers his triumphs in 2012 and the crowd that spurred him on. Zack and atheotes try not to look at each other. Sigurd doesn't even seem to notice. For others, this is new. Myrddraal has a look of curiosity on his face. Al Sipsclar accidentally walks right past his starting position and is gently corrected by the referee.

Things only get louder. After nearly four years of waiting, the crowd is whipped up into an absolute frenzy, which only intensifies as the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

The inaugural matchup is between two tournament veterans, Zack and Csargo. Csargo, though he is rustier having missed the previous tournament, has a slightly better record than his opponent: he won his first playoff match and made it to the quarterfinals before bowing out to the eventual champion, while Zack lost his first playoff match to an opponent who exited the very next round. Their pasts are far our of their minds at the moment, though: this is a new tournament and the possibilities are wide open. Sadly, reality comes crashing down about a second later for Zack, as his Paper is cut by Csargo's Scissors. The first throw of the tournament has ended in a victory for Csargo.
Csargo defeats Zack

The next matchup is a study in contrasts: tournament newbie Myrddraal vs. cagey veteran Sigurd. This match saw quite a bit of betting action on it beforehand as people wondered how the two of these players would match up, and the betting was surprisingly even for both sides. The first throw proves why this is the case with both men showing Paper... and the second throw continues to prove the same as both throw Paper once again. Myrddraal looks somewhat satisfied with the result, as he got a good showing against a tough opponent, but Sigurd looks a little disappointed. This is not how he wanted his redemption tour to start.
Myrddraal and Sigurd draw

Defending champion Visorslash is up next and ready to take on edse. Interestingly, these two faced off on the first day of the previous tournament as well, with Visor triumphing on the rethrow as their first through came up as a draw. This time, though, Visor has become more effecient, as his Rock crushes edse's Scissors on the first try. No rethrow will be necessary. edse looks in pain, but Visor has bigger things to worry about. The defending champion has started off strong.
Visorslash defeats edse

Up next are Winston Hughes and atheotes. Both of these men are tournament veterans - this is Winston's second and atheotes's third - but both of them have yet to make the semifinals in any tournament. Determined to break their hard-luck streaks, they both want to start off the tournament with a good result, and one of them gets their wish. Winston, hoping atheotes starts with good old reliable rock, throws Paper, but atheotes has outfoxed him and thrown Scissors. He looks over at Zack and waves. There will be no bizarre connection this year, it seems.
atheotes defeats Winston Hughes

seireikhaan has a bemused look on his face as he takes on Al Sipsclar. After infamously not scoring a single point in the previous tournament, he went into the knockout round as the most feared opponent, because nobody had any data on him after he threw nothing but Rock all tournament. After organizers changed the structure this year to prevent this strategy from resurfacing, everyone wondered: would khaan stick to his pattern? His first throw appears to have provided an answer: yes, as he is showing Rock. Meanwhile, Al Sipsclar, perhaps outthinking himself, throws Scissors. khaan's bemusement continues - it has been so long since he's won, he's not quite sure how to react. Al Sipsclar certainly does - he's angry with himself.
seireikhaan defeats Al Sipsclar

The final matchup of the day is between El Barto and BSmith. Barto, somewhat confused as to where he is and speaking in pirate tongue and mentioning something about doubloons, has to be guided to his starting position as BSmith eyes him curiously. Once the throws start, though, Barto is laser-focused: his Scissors have cut right through BSmith's Paper.

Day 1 results - betting

The most-trafficked action on the first day was whether Sigurd or Myrddraal would win their matchup, so of course the two of them drew and refunded all bets. :laugh4: El Barto also had a couple of bets - that there would be at least three draws and that he would win, but nobody took him up on it in time so those bets went back to him as well.

The only bet that actually went through in this round was the edse/Al Sipsclar wager on how many total Rocks would be shown in Round 1, with edse betting 20 that there would be at least 6 and Al Sips matching that total while wagering 2 on the under in order to hedge. It isn't even close, with only two Rocks being thrown, but that's why Al Sipsclar hedged in the first place. After a lot of confusion on the bookmakers' parts (note: in the extremely likely event that I screwed this up, please let me know), they determine that edse loses 20 gold for his incorrect bet while Al Sips's hedge nets him that 20.

I think.

NEW BETTING SYSTEM:
I'm dividing this into three tiers:

Bank bets:
For simple wagers only. You don't need anyone to take these bets, you'll be going directly against me. The only bank bets that are allowed are as follows:
- Pick a winner (or a draw) in a matchup
- Pick the final throw made by one person (obviously you're not allowed to bet on what you yourself throw)
I offer 2:1 odds on winner picks and 3:1 odds on final throws.

Pool bets:
The most complex of the three bets. Ideally this works best with a lot of people involved. You simply put up how much money you're willing to lose on a certain outcome, and the profits are divided by how many people are in on the share. With pool bets people set their own odds.

Individual side bets:
Between two people, wagered on anything. Both sides must confirm to me.

Bettors:
Al Sipsclar - 102
Zack - 100
El Barto - 100
BSmith - 100
atheotes - 100
Csargo - 100
Myrddraal - 100
Winston Hughes - 100
seireikhaan - 100
edse - 98

Jolt - 100 (unconfirmed) - no, see below post

Again, confirmation on the Al Sips/edse outcome would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully the new system will make things go smoother from here on out.

Day 2 results

After one day of the tournament, the contestants hope that the butterflies have all left their stomachs. The spectacle continues to grow, as it will right up through the championship matchup far in the distance, but in the meantime these players all have work to do. For some, it's to remain on course. For others, it's to right the ship after a bad performance. For Jolt, it's to put in a good showing on his bye-delayed debut. For Zack, it's to hope that his bets pan out, as he has little else to do on the day of *his* bye.

All of this is cosmetic, however; it is variations on the same theme. Everyone wants to win. And winning is on everyone's mind as the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

The first matchup of the day has some pretty enormous stakes. An astonishing 200 gold is being wagered on the winner of the El Barto and seireikhaan matchup - but perhaps more importantly, both of these contestants come in with one win to their name already. A second here would put them in the driver's seat in the early part of the tournament. Barto sticks with the throw that brought them victory the previous day, Scissors, but is in for a nasty surprise as khaan has done the same and thrown Rock. It looks like khaan's last place finish in the third tournament is far in the rearview mirror.
seireikhaan defeats El Barto

Up next is an intriguing contest between BSmith and Winston Hughes. Neither was able to score a point yesterday, but the former (BSmith) and current (Winston) moderator of CFC do have somewhat of a personal rivalry between the two of them. "Time to test your knowledge of forum procedure," BSmith says, as the two of them both initially throw Paper. BSmith approvingly nods and prepares his second throw: Rock, which is once again matched by Winston. Apparently this was the correct procedure and BSmith turns to congratulate Winston on passing the test, but he finds Winston has already turned away - he's looking for a Manhattan to drink.
BSmith and Winston Hughes draw

Jolt could not have drawn a worse opponent for his first match in six years: He goes up against defending champion Visorslash, who kicked off his title defense in impressive fashion yesterday and has a hungry look on his face. Jolt tries to keep down his nerves and does well enough, matching Visor's Rock with his own. On the second throw, Visor refuses to change course and throws Rock again - as does Jolt. Jolt walks away looking rather pleased himself - this was an acceptable result for now.
Jolt and Visorslash draw

Two straight draws have left the crowd eager for a victory, and both Al Sipsclar and Myrddraal would be more than happy to oblige. The problem, of course, is that they have to do it against each other. Myrddraal had the better result from the previous day, and at the end of the day his momentum carries him through, with his Paper nicely triumphing over Al Sips's Rock. The crowd cheers at the result as Myrddraal waves them on, but Al Sipsclar has taken no notice. He needs a victory, fast.
Myrddraal defeats Al Sipsclar

Up next is a battle to keep pace with surprise leader khaan as atheotes takes on Csargo. Both men are experienced, having taken part in previous tournaments, and they both know what needs to be done. It all comes down to a question of execution, and atheotes emphatically answers it with his Paper covering Csargo's Rock. With two victories from two matches giving him a good start, perhaps the third time will be the charm for atheotes. Csargo, for his part, goes straight to watch the final matchup to do some scouting for tomorrow.
atheotes defeats Csargo

The final matchup in question is between edse and Sigurd, a rematch of the dramatic knockout round match (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?141522-Gameroom-Rock-Paper-Scissors-Tournament-III&p=2053457553&viewfull=1#post2053457553) last tournament which required five separate tiebreakers before a winner (Sigurd) could be declared. As this is merely a round robin match, that record would not be equaled today, but it isn't for lack of trying on the contestants' parts. Both Sigurd and edse initially throw Paper and they both then follow it up with Rock, proving that the two of them are truly evenly-matched. Both men are surely already privately hoping that they do not meet again in the knockout round - otherwise they might be there forever!

Day 2 results - betting

After a chaotic first day, the tournament bookies seem to have gotten their affairs in order and the result is a more streamlined process than before with the three-tiered betting system. As a result, the number of bets has gone up, including one monumental wager on the khaan-Barto matchup.

With that being the first match of the day, the drama came storming out of the gate. khaan, compounding his victory in the match, also racked up a cool 90 gold from his various wagers. He truly is having the best tournament so far. El Barto, meanwhile, has to be disappointed, and the less said about BSmith's current status, the better.

Elsewhere, Zack made a bank bet that Winston loses - as Winston did not lose, he's down on that gold. However, he does come out ahead in his "right vs. left" side wager with Winston, as two players on the right side of the matchup line won as opposed to only one on the left (with three draws). That puts up to 10 up for that bet in total and therefore 5 up on the day. Meanwhile, Winston is 10 down from that.

With trends starting to establish themselves that savvy bettors can pick up on, the action is sure to only get more intense from here on out.

Day 3 results

The jockeying for positions has already begun. With four all-important first round byes at stake, the likes of atheotes, Visorslash, Myrddraal, and, surprisingly, seireikhaan, are all looking to build on their solid starts and rack up as many early points as possible in order to make the stretch run easy for them. Meanwhile, on the other end of the leaderboard, Zack and Al Sipsclar look to score their first points. Jolt, Winston Hughes, BSmith, and edse too want to start making some more noise. New to this tournament is the Unlucky #13 seed, which, should you receive it, means you miss out on the knockout round entirely. Nobody wants to be put in that position. For them, in a sense, the must-win rounds have already begun.

Teeth gritted, steeled for battle, the contestants (except El Barto, taking a well-deserved nap on his bye) are ready as the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

The first match of the day is between Zack and Sigurd, both of whom have gotten off to shaky starts. Zack took a loss in his first matchup and then went on bye, while Sigurd, though he hasn't lost yet, hasn't won yet either. The Dragonslayer expects better of himself. The two of them played on Day 5 of the previous tournament and Sigurd won easily, but this time the result would not be repeated. In a somewhat ironic result considering Sigurd's pep talk to Zack before the battle, he throws Paper... only to see Zack's Scissors. Perhaps Sigurd should be less overt about his strategizing in the future.
Zack defeats Sigurd

Csargo and edse, so far, are in the middle of the pack. It's still extremely early in the tournament, obviously, but both men are looking for any kind of jump start to get to the vaunted Top Four. It's not going to happen on the first throw, as both of them show Scissors. The second throw does provide the separation, though. edse has stuck with Scissors - and it was a wise decision, as Csargo has unfortunately flipped to Paper. After an initial win on the first day, Csargo has now lost two matchups in a row. Meanwhile, edse has improved his result every day so far.
edse defeats Csargo

Up next is Myrddraal facing early leader atheotes in what could potentially be an early playoff preview. Of the four possible points the two of them could have earned by this stage of the tournament, they've collected 3.5. People are eagerly watching to see how this result could shape the scoreboard, but there is very little drama to be had. atheotes throws Rock, which crushes Myrddraal's Scissors. atheotes is now three wins for three and guarantees himself at least a share of the lead going into Day 4.
atheotes defeats Myrddraal

Defending champion Visorslash takes on Al Sipsclar, still searching for his first points, next. At first glance this would appear to be somewhat of a mismatch. Visorslash has the experience, championship pedigree, and a solid first two results in this tournament, while Al Sips has none of these things. One thing Al Sips *does* have, though, is Rock, which smashes Visor's Scissors and renders all of his previous advantages moot. With a decisive win over the defending champion, Al Sipsclar has scored his first points in the tournament in high style.
Al Sipsclar defeats Visorslash

Neither Winston Hughes nor Jolt has made too much headway in the tournament so far, though in fairness Jolt has had an early bye and thus received his 0.5 points in one fewer result than Winston. A win here for the returning veteran would be very telling and would probably put Jolt in the upper tier of competitors, but Winston won't go down easily. He matches Jolt's initial throw of Rock with his own, and then wisely switches to Paper on the rethrow, defeating Jolt's Rock. Winston isn't in the upper tier yet, but this win does put him within striking distance of the leaders.
Winston Hughes defeats Jolt

The final match of the day is between surprise leader seireikhaan and his betting victim from yesterday BSmith. This match is tinged with a little malice, as BSmith wants justice for his lost 80 gold and khaan, taking everything personally, is still stung that anyone would ever doubt his glory. The current theme holds, with khaan adding insult to injury by defeating BSmith's Scissors with his own Rock and kept pace with atheotes for first place overall. BSmith, on the other hand, would probably do well to just avoid all sort of competition with khaan for a while.

Not much action yesterday, but the bookies are still ready if called upon. The only wager taken was atheotes betting 10 on himself to win, which he happily collected on after his victory over Myrddraal. khaan still has a commanding lead in the gold count, but atheotes has now put himself in second. Day 4 results

With seireikhaan and atheotes setting an alarming pace after three days of the tournament, the contestants choose from two orders of the day. For khaan and atheotes, the task is simple: they have to simply keep winning. For everyone else, they have to stop them. The tasks specifically fall to Csargo and BSmith, but everyone else wants in on the action as well. As Sigurd watches on, the jockeying for positions has already begun.

The crowd is in a particularly good mood today, as they cheer and sing to their heroes as the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

The first match of the day is between rivals Zack and Visorslash. The defending champion took down Zack in their meeting in the previous tournament, right before it became common knowledge about Zack's strange connection with atheotes for the first half of that tournament. This time, free of such bonds, Zack is looking for revenge - but he is foiled once again, with Visor's Paper covering Zack's Rock on the first throw. After a brief stutter yesterday, Visor's title defense is back on track. Zack now has bigger problems, with a mere one point through his first three matches - less than his total to this point in the last tournament.
Visorslash defeats Zack

The battle between Winston Hughes and Myrddraal is next. This match has drawn attention as so far the two of them have been in prime position, leading the non-khaan/atheotes pack of contestants in the scoring race. Should either or both of those two falter, the winner of the Winston/Myrd matchup would be in a very good position to gain ground. Alas, it is not to be, as both men pick up their second draw of the tournament with identical throws of Scissors and then Scissors again.
Winston Hughes and Myrddraal draw

Surprise leader seireikhaan takes on Csargo next. khaan has been riding high so far and defying all expectations with three wins in three matches, but Csargo sensationally declared that he was "ready for" khaan in a press conference before the match and was confident that he'd pull off the upset. khaan, not one to tolerate any challenge - perceived or otherwise - to his supremacy, is eagerly anticipating the moment where he gets to swat Csar down - but then he sees what Csargo has thrown: Paper, the perfect counter to his Rock. Csargo, acknowledging his cheering supporters, has delivered on his promise. khaan now has to wonder if this was a one-time blip or if he's been figured out.
Csargo defeats seireikhaan

Up next is the match between El Barto and edse, both of whom are looking to climb up the leaderboard. edse has the slight advantage in points, his 1.5 looking a little better than Barto's 1.0, but Barto is coming off his bye that edse has yet to take. Their appearance of being evenly matched holds with the first throw, with both men showing Scissors. The tiebreaker, though, proves decisive, with Barto's Paper nicely covering edse's Rock. Barto has used his bye well and will now look to carry his momentum through his next match and beyond.
El Barto defeats edse

In what would appear to be the day's biggest mismatch, bottom feeder BSmith tries to take down undefeated atheotes. BSmith has yet to record a win in this tournament and has also seen most of his gold disappear, but at least seireikhaan is safely in his rearview mirror for a while. atheotes, for his part, wants to prove the validity of the expression "out of the frying pan, but into the fire", but fails to deliver: his Paper has come up short against BSmith's Scissors. With both leaders outright losing today, there is a renewed sense of optimism among the contestants. The gap has closed, they can still do this. Unsurprisingly, atheotes does not share these sentiments.
BSmith defeats atheotes

The final matchup of the day is between Jolt and newly invigorated Al Sipsclar, fresh off his win against the defending champion yesterday. Tournament reporters caught Al Sipsclar celebrating his victory late into the night yesterday in high style indeed, with various sources coming to a consensus of Al Sips "socializing" with nine women, four men, dozens of bottles of various liquors, an office printing machine, and a large grizzly bear named Bertha. With Al Sips's shirt torn revealing a large amount of claw marks, oddsmakers are wondering if he is in the mental state to face Jolt. Their suspicions appear to be correct, as his Paper is quickly cut down by Jolt's Scissors. Jolt has rebounded nicely from a loss on the previous day. Al Sipsclar, on the other hand, walks out without taking any questions, muttering something about "PC Load Letter" and "beef jerky" under his breath.
Jolt defeats Al Sipsclar

Standings through Day 4:

*seireikhaan: 3
*atheotes: 3
*Visorslash: 2.5
El Barto: 2
*Myrddraal: 2
*Winston Hughes: 2
*Csargo: 2
Jolt: 1.5
*edse: 1.5
*BSmith: 1.5
Zack: 1
Sigurd: 1
*Al Sipsclar: 1

* - still to go on bye

Note with the standings: I do not bother to adjust position for tiebreakers beyond boosting those who have already gone on bye above those who have not yet done so (provided they have the same score). If there are tiebreakers to be resolved, I will do so and explain the procedure once the round robin phase has concluded.

Day 5 results

With four rounds in the book, the contestants have officially entered the midgame portion of the round robin. Now the great shuffling begins: who can withstand the grueling day-after-day pressure and claw a way into the top four (or, at least, out of the dreaded #13 spot)? Those who have done their research, those who can read their opponent, those who have the mental strength, will do well here. As the old saying goes, the cream rises to the top, and everybody's hoping to be the gourmet French crème au lait rather than the store-brand ReadyWhip.

After his win against surprise leader seireikhaan yesterday, Csargo is the man on a well-deserved bye. He takes his place and sits back, ready to observe, as the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

The first match of the day sees a battle of the basement as Zack takes on fellow bottom feeder Al Sipsclar, in a match that could be crucial in determining who ends up with the dreaded #13 seed. Despite them both having the same amount of points to their name, Zach is listed as the slight favorite over Al Sipsclar due to his experience and the fact that he's already had a bye. The bookies are proven wrong again, though, as Al Sips quickly defeats his opponent via a timely throw of Paper covering Zack's Rock. With the outright loss, now Zack is really in trouble and must hope that Sigurd loses to keep pace.
Al Sipsclar defeats Zack

First-place atheotes battles Jolt in the next match. The former superfan has put up a good showing so far, having accumulated the second most points of anyone who's already had a bye, but atheotes is out for revenge after his loss to BSmith the previous day. Jolt tries to point out that he literally had nothing to do with the loss in question and thus "revenge" is a questionable term at best but this fails to deter atheotes in the slightest. His Rock smashes through Jolt's Scissors, ensuring that atheotes would once again have at least a share of first place.
atheotes defeats Jolt

With two losses, a draw, a win, and no byes each, edse and BSmith have matched each other in results so far and are looking for some separation. A win would most likely keep them in the slog at the middle of the leaderboard, which isn't ideal, but it's certainly preferable to being near the bottom. Both men are to be denied, though, with edse and BSmith first throwing Paper and then following it up with a double Rock. The end result leaves neither contestant satisfied, as their slog continues.
edse and BSmith draw

Up next is Sigurd taking on El Barto. If you had told the oddsmakers before the start of the tournament that when these two meet on Day 5 their positions on the leaderboard would be one point behind the leader and then tied for last, they would have agreed, but they probably would have put Sigurd as the one higher up the board than Barto. His campaign has creaked to a surprisingly slow start and, without a win to his name yet, people are starting to wonder if the Dragonslayer has lost his edge. Today, though, he shows them he won't go down without a fight, his Rock smashing Barto's Scissors, leading him to pump his fist in elation. Meanwhile, Barto's uneven campaign continues. He has never drawn and never gotten the same result two days in a row.
Sigurd defeats El Barto

Myrddraal, trying to reverse his recent skid, faces off against surprise leader seireikhaan next. A win here would really boost his confidence, but khaan, coming off his first loss of the tournament yesterday is in no mood to make it easy for him. On their first throw, both men show Rock. Myrddraal looks deep in thought; khaan appears supremely unconcerned. At the end of the day it seems as if Myrddraal has out-thought himself: taking a gamble, he switches to Scissors, only to groan as he sees that khaan has stuck with Rock. khaan has kept pace with atheotes for first place.
seireikhaan defeats Myrddraal

The final matchup of the day pits defending champion Visorslash against Winston Hughes. Visor, in third at the start of the day and seeing outright wins by the two people ahead of him, knows he has some work to do, but Winston is a dangerous opponent who has only lost once so far (and to atheotes at that). Winston steps into position with a knowing smirk on his face - has he gotten into Visor's head? The result - his Rock defeating Visor's Scissors - only serves to intensify suspicion. With this victory over Visor, Winston has confirmed himself a force to be reckoned with in the tournament, perhaps in the tier below khaan and atheotes. Meanwhile, the defending champion will look to rebound next match against BSmith.

Despite his tense victory over Myrddraal and thus remaining in a share of first place, khaan looks somewhat crestfallen after the match. When questioned on why, he reveals that he had made a private bet over the course of the round that Myrddraal would, in fact, defeat him. In essence he bet against himself and paid the price for it.

"How much did you wager on Myrddraal?"

"...100 gold," khaan muttered, slinking off to try to collect the remainder of his dignity. Afterwards, a huge debate launched about the validity of betting against oneself and whether or not khaan somehow engineered this result, but the general consensus was that, considering khaan's reaction, this was not his desired result and was simply the whims of Fate not having his back this day.

Day 6 results

Up to this point, the byes have made themselves known, with the current top four scorers all having yet to take their round off. seireikhaan, atheotes, Winston Hughes, and Visorslash have all made the most of their schedules so far, but now the pack is primed to catch up to them. In the next four rounds, three of the top four - exempting atheotes - will be taking their byes. Whether anyone in the gigantic pack of people at 2 points can overtake them will soon be determined.

As seireikhaan takes his place in the audience and hopes for an atheotes loss, the crowd goes wild as the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

The first matchup of the day sees Zack, desperate for a win, take on edse, part of the gigantic pack in the middle. In their matchup on Day 7 of the previous tournament, edse took him down, which just adds to Zack's feeling that nothing has gone right for him this tournament, but at last: he has a reversal! edse avoids picking up his draw in six days, but he also scores no points at all as his Scissors comes up short against Zack's Rock. The pack of people at exactly two points has somehow grown even larger, causing tournament organizers to start to sweat. Zack, happy he got the victory, is unsympathetic.
Zack defeats edse

Up next is what would have been a battle of heavyweights between Sigurd and atheotes, but Sigurd has been uncharacteristically underperforming in this tournament so far, only collecting his first outright win yesterday against El Barto. atheotes, meanwhile, has righted his course with a win yesterday after a loss to BSmith and wants to start racking up a gap between himself and everyone else. With atheotes drinking in the crowd's adoration, he gets his wish and continues Sigurd's malaise by smashing Sigurd's Scissors with his own Rock. Just about halfway through the tournament and Sigurd is staring at four knockout round matches if he wants to win it all... and probably a rematch against atheotes at some point down the line if this keeps up.
atheotes defeats Sigurd

Csargo and Al Sipsclar are currently tied in points, but Csargo has had the more impressive tournament so far, having already taken his bye and recording the only win over seireikhaan to this point. Al Sips has stabilized himself after losses in the first two rounds, but still needs to make an impact beyond partying with Bertha the bear. He doesn't get it today, though, with Csar's Scissors carving through his own Paper. Csargo has bookended his bye with two wins and is on a nice little run at he goes into his match tomorrow.
Csargo defeats Al Sipsclar

Myrddraal has not had a win since Day 2 of the round robin. Jolt has only had one win in the tournament up to this point. Something has to give here (unless of course they draw in which case it doesn't). Myrddraal is a student of the game, having exhaustively analyzed the throwing patterns of the people in this tournament as well as previous ones. While not having come up with any sort of algorithm, he does think he has good enough intuition as to what Jolt will throw and responds accordingly by throwing Rock. He then sees Jolt's Paper. Muttering menacingly, Myrddraal's misery might metastasize.
Jolt defeats Myrddraal

Defending champion Visorslash tries to rebound from his loss to Winston yesterday with a win over BSmith, but it won't be easy. BSmith, after all, after a horrendous start, has picked up a win and a draw over the past two days and is really looking to go on a hot streak. Add in the fact that BSmith defeated Visor late in the last tournament and he's actually the slight favorite here. Then Visor, because of course he does, promptly throws that all out the window by throwing Scissors which cuts through BSmith's Paper - not to mention also cutting through his hopes of breaking into a higher tier.
Visorslash defeats BSmith

Ending the day's slate of matches is a contest between Winston Hughes and El Barto. Winston has been quietly strong in this tournament so far, with his only outright loss coming against atheotes on Day 1 - a loss that is looking more and more forgivable by the day. Barto, on the other hand, has been erratic, never drawing and never posting the same result twice in a row. Considering he lost yesterday, this would mean that he is in line for a win, but Winston's consistency rubs off on him: Barto has now lost twice in a row with his Scissors getting smashed by Winston's Rock.

Day 7 results

After a weekend off after which the tournament officials seem to be uncharacteristically unorganized, we are set to resume at the stadium and the crowd has worked itself up into a frenzy. With this day marking the halfway point of the round robin, it is absolutely imperative for the contestants to pick up a good result today - and they know it, decidedly not looking at each other or anything else as they make their way to their positions.

Some are handling the pressure better than others (particularly Myrddraal, who has a well-timed bye this round), but it's time to see if that translates to results. The crowd noise only amps up as the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

The first matchup of the day is between Zack and the so-far impressive Winston Hughes. Winston moved into a tie for second the previous day with his victory over El Barto and has not outright lost since Day 1. Zack, though, finally broke his hard-luck run on the previous day with a win over edse and is looking to put those days well behind him. With momentum on both their sides, they prove evenly matched with the first throw, both men showing Scissors. However, the second throw provides separation. Winston sticks with Scissors, but Zack correctly switches to Rock. With two successive victories, one of them having the potential to be his signature win of the tournament, Zack is looking a lot stronger than he was two days ago.
Zack defeats Winston Hughes

The next match sees a clash of the titans between seireikhaan and Visorslash. khaan, having been on bye the most recent day, hopes to use his rest period well as a preparation for the defending champion (who would pass him in the leaderboard with a win), but Visor is coming off a win and wants to reassert his authority. Visor has faced khaan before and knows exactly what is coming, as he easily anticipates khaan's Rock with his own Paper. With this win combined by Winston's and khaan's losses, the defending champion looks good to secure a first-round bye come the knockout round.
Visorslash defeats seireikhaan

Up next is El Barto vs. Csargo in a battle of two upper-midlevel players. Csargo has scored one more point than Barto thusfar and the two have gone in opposite directions: Csargo's last two results were wins and Barto's last two were losses. With Csar looking to take advantage of khaan and Winston's losses, he concentrates very hard on trying to beat his opponent... and does. His Rock smashes through El Barto's Scissors, sending him (temporarily) into the top four and officially confirming Barto's tailspin. With a match against the defending champion coming up, El Barto needs to correct himself, and fast.
Csargo defeats El Barto

Late in the round robin of the previous tournament, Sigurd defeated BSmith to seal his top four position and dooming BSmith to the morass that was the middle tier. Having had an underwhelming run so far, Sigurd is hoping to recapture the magic, but BSmith is in just as rough of a position as Sigurd and is desperate to start some kind of run. In previous tournaments, a bad set of results just meant you were in for a rougher knockout round matchup, but now there is an added element of danger. Finish with the unlucky #13 seed and you miss out on the fun entirely. With the threat of that increasing with every day, Sigurd is the one who delivers, his Rock triumphing over BSmith's Scissors. He still has work to do, but he's certainly in a lot better position than his opponent, who still has to go on bye and is really in trouble now.
Sigurd defeats BSmith

Jolt takes on edse next in a battle to stay out of the basement. Jolt's positioning is better than what it looks like on first glance, as he has already taken his bye and has had a decent run of results lately, but edse's is just as grim as it looks. With him not having scored a win since Day 3 and only managing a draw against BSmith in that time, edse is hoping the freefall ends today. Jolt has other ideas though. His Scissors cuts through edse's Paper, and it also cuts through his hopes of being anything more than a low seed in the knockout rounds. Tomorrow, Jolt plays Csargo in a critical match that could put him in striking distance of the top four.
Jolt defeats edse

Al Sipsclar is nervous. He hasn't done well in this tournament so far. He's only scored two points. He hasn't gone on bye yet. And he's facing tournament steamroller atheotes, who has only lost once and not drawn at all on his way to first place so far. He knows the odds. People have bet against him. Bertha the bear has not provided as much solace as he would have liked. But a funny thing happens in these tournaments: the results take on a mind of their own. atheotes, perhaps expecting a rock, has thrown Paper, but Al Sips has defied the odds and thrown Scissors. atheotes won't be too unhappy as he's still maintained his lead, but Al Sips now has a lifeline.

An amusing day of results for all but one of the bettors. He picked edse, seireikhaan, Winston Hughes, BSmith, and atheotes to triumph, and none of them did. His only solace was correctly picking Csargo over El Barto, but when all was said and done Myrddraal still finds himself down 25 gold for the day.

Jolt is gunning for a top four spot as he looks to continue his hot streak. Sigurd, Zack, and Al Sipsclar are searching for consistency as they try to claw out of the middle of the pack. El Barto, Myrddraal, BSmith, and edse, are desperate to stay out of the unlucky #13 spot. And Winston Hughes, enjoying his bye, just wants to watch it all burn down.

The intensity ratchets up on this pivotal day, and the crowd responds to it. They go bezerk as the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

Zack battles seireikhaan in the first match of the day, a critical match for both of them, but Zack almost looks... bored? "I mean, really, it's not too hard to figure this guy's pattern out," Zack explained in an interview before the match. "He has literally thrown nothing but rock since the second tournament back in 2009. It's the fourth tournament in 2016 now. I'm pretty sure I've cracked the code." khaan, when pressed for comment, mumbled something about the Stone singing through his veins. In any case, Zack's prediction pays off, as he correctly throws Paper to khaan's Rock.
Zack defeats seireikhaan

Up next is the match between El Barto and defending champion Visorslash. Visor, having won two straight and three out of four, is brimming with confidence and is looking to overtake atheotes, but his act does not work on Barto, who is never fazed by anything beyond a lack of rum and/or grog. And a lack of people to do business with. And expanding Papist influence over the colonies and international waters, but let's not go there. The point is, Barto is not scared by Visorslash in the slightest and it shows, covering Visor's Rock with his throw of Paper.
El Barto defeats Visorslash

BSmith (winless since Day 4, scoreless since Day 5) and Myrddraal (0.5 points from his last four matches) are both at the bottom. They both have a low gold count from the betting. They both really need a win here, but Rock/Paper/Scissors is a cruel mistress and, by the laws of the universe, must deny at least one of them their greatest desire. At the end of the day, BSmith "triumphs" and keeps his cold streak intact, his throw of Paper getting snipped by Myrd's Scissors. This result makes BSmith the odds-on favorite for the dreaded #13 seed.
Myrddraal defeats BSmith

Contrary to the two previous contestants, Jolt is red-hot. After a deceptively slow start, which included his bye on the very first day, Jolt has won three of his last four matches, with the only blemish being a totally respectable loss to atheotes during that time. However, today he is facing the only player who's even hotter than him: Csargo, who has won three straight. What happens when two unstoppable forces meet head-on? Well, initially, they both throw Scissors. But the rethrow provides separation, and Jolt moves on, correctly switching to Paper while Csargo throws Rock. It's an entertaining matchup and while Csargo is disheartened, these two might meet again in the knockout round should their fine tournaments continue.
Jolt defeats Csargo

The penultimate match of the day sees Al Sipsclar take on Sigurd. With both men standing at three points, this match could be huge and launch one of them into top four contention... and it could send one of them spiraling downwards to the oblivion of the unlucky #13 seed. Or they could both draw, but with the dearth of draws we've had that seems unlikely. Everybody in the tournament is waiting for the Dragonslayer to go into beserker mode and run riot on the competition, but it has not happened yet. Does it happen today? Reply Hazy, Try Again responds the Magic 8-Ball, as both men start with Rock. The second answer, though, is an unequivocal Don't Count On It - Sigurd switches to Scissors, but Al Sips sticks with Rock. Sigurd's uneven tournament continues while Al Sipsclar has quietly won three out of four.
Al Sipsclar defeats Sigurd

The final match of the day is a battle of extremes. On one side you have first-place atheotes, ready to slay all comers and put a stranglehold on his #1 seed. On the other side you have edse, who is... trying. Crazy upsets have happened in the tournament before, the biggest one being #11 LazyMcCrow's miracle over the undefeated Ibn-Khaldun in the quarterfinals of the last tournament, but standard hold-to-form victories have also happened. Here, the latter scenario wins out, as edse's Rock is covered by atheotes's Paper.

Day 8 results - betting

One interesting wrinkle that tournament officials have noticed is that there have been no draws at all for three consecutive days. The last contest to end in a split result was edse/BSmith all the way back on Day 5. Considering these two are tied for last place *and* both of them still have to go on bye, this could have implications for any potential tiebreakers.

For now though, it just adds to the questions. Will khaan ever break away from his worship of the Holy Mineral? Will there ever be a draw again? Has GeneralHankerchief, after nearly four tournaments' worth of writeups, finally run out of ways to say that one contestant has defeated another? FIND OUT NEXT TIME ON "AS THE PAPER FLIPS".

Day 9 results

The gaps, with two exceptions, are nearly nonexistent. At the top of the leaderboard, atheotes surveys his domain stretched out before him. His 1.5 point advantage over his nearest competitors mean that he will all but clinch a first-round bye with another victory today. That same 1.5 points separates second place from eleventh. Bringing up the rear are BSmith and edse, in a death struggle to avoid the dreaded #13 seed, but for pretty much everyone, the margin of error does not exist. The line between success and failure is so thin, and every throw is quite literally the single most important throw of their lives (Visor and Sigurd, having made the finals in the past, disagree, but the point stands nonetheless).

Visor, for his part, is more than happy to be spending this round on bye. Sure, he doesn't get any points out of it, but at least he gets to avoid the cauldron of uncertainty for a day. He lounges back and relaxes as the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

The first match of the day is a big one: Zack vs. first-place atheotes. After a miserable start to his tournament, Zack has righted the ship and won three matches in a row, but now he faces the ultimate test. Can he take down the titan of the tournament? atheotes, for his part, is in no mood to let up. In the very first tournament, back in 2009, atheotes was the #1 seed going into the final day of the round robin, sitting pretty. What happened? He choked it away on the final day, tumbled down to the #4 spot, and bowed out to eventual champion CountArach in the first matchup of the knockout round. He is determined to not let that happen again. As befitting of a tense match, it starts out even, as both men throw Scissors, but then Zack proves his quality. He switches to Paper while atheotes unwisely turns to Rock. Zack has now won four in a row, taken down the first-place contestant, and is steamrolling his way to a top-four seed.
Zack defeats atheotes

Up next is a match with slightly fewer stakes to it: edse vs. Al Sipsclar. Certainly, the battle to avoid the #13 seed is an attractive one, but edse's opponent Al Sips is not a giant, he's just... Al Sips. In the middle of the pack, trying to win as much as he can, and go into the knockout round on a hot streak. edse doesn't care that much about the romance of it all, he's just trying to win, but he does not get his wish today as his Rock is covered by Al Sips's Paper. Al Sips is certainly happy: he's kept pace with Zack, but now edse must hope that BSmith loses.
Al Sipsclar defeats edse

Sigurd, again searching for consistency, faces Jolt in the next matchup. After his big victory against Csargo yesterday, Jolt has now won three in a row, putting himself in second place overall, and is riding high. With atheotes losing earlier today, the former superfan has his eyes set on the prize of the #1 seed - a win would put him within 0.5 points of atheotes. But all of this looking ahead has caused him to possibly overlook his competition. The wily veteran matches Jolt's initial throw of Paper with his own, and then sticks with Paper on the rethrow when Jolt switches to Rock. In the turbulent waters of Rock/Paper/Scissors, Sigurd may not be pacing the pack, but he is still swimming along.
Sigurd defeats Jolt

Csargo knows better than to overlook his next opponent, hard-luck BSmith. Sure, BSmith may be tied for last, but he is also sensing an opportunity with edse having lost earlier today. A win here against an opponent with eyes on the top four would send a message that, record aside, BSmith would be a tough foe in the knockout round. Csargo knows all of this and is ready for a battle, but comes out misfiring. His Scissors is crushed by BSmith's Rock. With this loss knocking him down a peg, Csargo now has work to do to reestablish himself as a top-four contender.
BSmith defeats Csargo

Myrddraal isn't quite sure of what to make of El Barto, what with his prancing around and talk of doubloons and general other pirate-y behavior, but he tries to put it out of his mind. His win over BSmith the previous day pulled him out of the abyss, and he's looking to build on that with another victory here. Barto, for his part, has righted his own ship with an impressive win over Visorslash yesterday and is currently letting the world know what he thinks of Myrddraal by making some weird "yarr"ing noises with the corner of his mouth. At the end of the day though, Barto's intimidation(?) tactics fail, as Myrddraal's Paper nicely counters his own Rock.
Myrddraal defeats El Barto

The final match of the day would have been more highly anticipated had one of the contestants not started to fall fast. Winston Hughes has come off his bye looking to reestablish momentum, and he might have picked the perfect opponent to do it against: seireikhaan has lost two straight and seems to have been figured out. Not testing the waters at all, Winston goes straight for the kill shot of Paper... and the pattern holds, as khaan's Rock has failed him once again.

Day 9 results - betting

A great cheer went up after Winston's victory over seireikhaan, as quite a few people bet on khaan's predictability coming back to bite him. That said, the Winston's victory only caused many people to break even for the day. Two of the people who bet on each of the day's matches - Myrddraal and Zack - were down five gold until their final wager on Winston. edse, up five gold, bet on khaan, meaning all of that betting happened for nothing, because of course it did.

The only person to profit from the day's scoring was, naturally, atheotes. Picking his spots instead of putting down blanket wagers, atheotes raked in a cool 20 gold from betting on Winston and 10 more from controversially picking Zack over himself. This is leaving people to wonder if he threw the match in order to solidify his hold over first place in the betting race while predicting that nobody can catch him in the tournament itself.

Day 10 results

The noise emanating from the stadium isn't particularly rhythmic, nor is it organized. It is not focused, directed, or about anything in particular. What it is, however, is loud. All-encompassing. It threatens to swallow up the contestants whole if they're unable to deal with the immense pressure on their shoulders. The question of if the contestants are able to is a private matter, one that will soon be answered today. And tomorrow, and over the rest of the round robin. And, should they be so lucky, their final exam will come in the knockout round.

But first, they have to get there. And with the crowd mindlessly cheering and with Al Sipsclar enjoying a well-deserved bye, the players prepare themselves for the storm as the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

Can anyone stop Zack? He's won four matchups in a row including taking down first place atheotes, but BSmith is going to give it a try. He's bought himself a modicum of breathing room between him and last place edse with his win over Csargo, but this is still going to be a very tough ask. After all, Zack has rebounded from a terrible start and has steamrolled all comers lately. BSmith, for his part, doesn't go down so easily, as he matches Zack's Paper with his own. As a matter of fact, BSmith doesn't go down at all. On the rethrow he once again proves himself equal to his opponent by throwing Scissors, as does Zack. With the first draw in the tournament since Round 5, both contestants are reasonably satisfied with the result... but the bettors, on the other hand, are not.
Zack and BSmith draw

Jolt and El Barto face off next in a battle for positioning. Jolt saw his streak snapped yesterday with a tough loss to Sigurd and wants to start another one, but Barto is motivated to keep pace with BSmith and make sure he doesn't fall in danger of getting the dreaded #13 seed. The end result sees the draws apparently making up for lost time, as after a four-day drought we now have two in two matches. The initial throw for both men is Paper, as is the follow-up.
Jolt and El Barto draw

The matchup between atheotes and seireikhaan has an air of impatience to it. Everybody knows what's going to happen, after all. khaan is going to throw Rock, atheotes will be ready for it, collect his point, and the world will move on. The only question is if atheotes will play cautious and throw Rock first before switching to Paper, or skip the formality and just go for Paper right away. In the end, atheotes opts for caution, starting with Rock, fully expecting things to go to the rethrow. But then, something happens. After nearly two entire tournaments and over six years, khaan has broken from his pattern. Perhaps realizing his position is more tenuous than what it was earlier in the tournament, perhaps wanting to score a major victory against the current leader, or, most probably, just wanting to throw some chaos into the equation, does something different. But this is where atheotes's caution pays off. Because, for the first time, khaan has thrown something besides Rock. Unfortunately for him, it is Scissors.
atheotes defeats seireikhaan

After that shock result (and khaan's subsequent temper tantrum, and atheotes's laughter in disbelief), the matchup between edse and Winston Hughes is greeted with muted anticipation. With both BSmith and El Barto drawing, edse really needs a victory here if he is to have any hope of avoiding the unlucky #13 seed, but he faces stiff opposition in Winston, who was in second place at the start of the day and is angling for a top four seed. In the end, edse's misery is compounded as his hopeful throw of Scissors - and his chances of making the knockout round - is crushed by Winston's Rock.
Winston Hughes defeats edse

Up next is the rematch from last tournament's finals (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?141522-Gameroom-Rock-Paper-Scissors-Tournament-III&p=2053458869&viewfull=1#post2053458869): Sigurd vs. Visorslash. Naturally, the stakes are significantly lower now than what they were last time, but this is still an important match. Sigurd, still haunted by that result, has studied it in great detail. In the championship, they both started with Scissors. On the rethrow, Sigurd, thinking Visor wouldn't move, switched over to Rock, but Visor correctly predicted this, threw Paper, and won the championship. By Sigurd's reasoning, Visor liked to switch things up. So he wouldn't be expecting Sigurd to lead with what lost him the title last time. With all of this in mind, Sigurd throws Rock... but history repeats itself, and Visor throws Paper to improve his record against the Dragonslayer to 3-0 all time. For Sigurd's sake, he hopes he avoids Visor in the knockout round - if he makes it to the knockout round at all.
Visorslash defeats Sigurd

Day 10's final match sees Csargo face off against Myrddraal. Both of these contestants started the match day with 4 points, right in the middle of the pack. With the other two at 4 points - khaan and Sigurd - both losing, a victory here would all but guarantee the winner safety from the dreaded #13 and give them an outside chance of making the top four. Gripping stakes indeed, and ultimately it is Csargo who launches himself ahead, with a correct throw of Paper to counter Myrddraal's Rock.
Csargo defeats Myrddraal

Standings through Day 10:

*atheotes: 7
Winston Hughes: 6
Zack: 5.5
Visorslash: 5.5
Al Sipsclar: 5
Jolt: 5
Csargo: 5
Myrddraal: 4
seireikhaan: 4
Sigurd: 4
El Barto: 3.5
*BSmith: 3.5
*edse: 2

* - still to go on bye

Everyone with at least 4.5 points has clinched a spot in the knockout round. El Barto has the tiebreaker over edse should it come down to that. All other possible tiebreakers to avoid the #13 seed against edse are either yet to be decided or will come down to a sudden death throw.

Day 10 results - betting

More and more people are putting money on whoever goes up against seireikhaan, and after a huge scare, they are rewarded for doing so. The khaan results help a lot of people out - Winston ends the day up 20 and Myrddraal does up 10. It also allows Zack to break even for the day. El Barto, who did not bet on the khaan matchup, ends the day down 5 (nobody took his side bet, which would have allowed him to break even). All who picked winners for the Zack/BSmith and Jolt/Barto matchups were refunded their gold, as these ended in draws.

One person, though, has busted out. khaan, who knew exactly what he was going to throw against atheotes, made a private wager that he would upset the front-runner. He put all of his remaining 90 gold on himself to win - and then atheotes was cautious and blew up his plan. The result is that khaan has become the first person to lose all of his gold - a far cry from his halycon days of when he had a share of first place and 190 gold in the bank. Most of the other bettors seem to be holding back laughter when they hear about this result.

Day 11 results

Sorry for the poor quality on my end, busy day. I'm declaring this to be my one mulligan in terms of writeups.

BSmith on bye this round.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

Zack vs. El Barto: First throw is Rock for both. Second throw is also Rock for both.
Zack and El Barto draw

Jolt vs. seireikhaan: Jolt pulls the atheotes strategy of starting off with Rock to see what khaan does. Looks like he's back to form with Rock. Satisfied, Jolt switches to Paper which works because khaan throws Rock again.
Jolt defeats seireikhaan

Al Sipsclar vs. Winston Hughes: Winston won't overtake atheotes for first place today. He and Al Sips both throw Rock and then Paper. They both maintain their positions for the time being.
Al Sipsclar and Winston Hughes draw

atheotes vs. Visorslash: This one could be a playoff preview. atheotes caps a fine round robin and clinches himself a first round bye thanks to his throw of Paper, defeating Visor's Rock.
atheotes defeats Visorslash

edse vs. Myrddraal: First throw is Scissors for each. edse then keeps his hopes of avoiding the #13 seed alive by switching to Rock while Myrddraal remains at Scissors. Should it come down to it edse now has the tiebreaker over Myrd. Much is still in doubt.
edse defeats Myrddraal

Sigurd vs. Csargo: With edse's win, the pressure is on for Sigurd to get out of danger here. He doesn't. His Paper gets cut by Csargo's Scissors on the first throw.
Csargo defeats Sigurd

Standings through Day 11:

*atheotes: 8
Winston Hughes: 6.5
Zack: 6
Jolt: 6
Csargo: 6
Visorslash: 5.5

Myrddraal: 4
seireikhaan: 4
Sigurd: 4
El Barto: 4
BSmith: 3.5

* - still to go on bye

With wins over Jolt and Csargo, atheotes has clinched a first-round bye. In terms of avoiding the #13 seed this round has provided no clarity as edse won and nobody else was able to reach the threshold of 4.5 points. El Barto has the tiebreaker over edse, edse has the tiebreaker over Myrddraal, and any other tiebreaking combination involving edse is either yet to be determined or will come down to sudden death.

Well, nobody went bust this round. :laugh4: Of the people who placed bets, Winston Hughes had the best day going +20 overall - a result of his correct wager on Jolt over khaan (his other bet ended in a draw and was thus refunded). Zack had the biggest wager on Jolt over khaan, but a lot of his other wagers went the other way and he only ended up +15 for the day. Barto went two-for-two, but placed comparatively smaller bets and is +10.

Day 12 results

We are now officially in the homestretch of the round robin. It has been a long, exhausting, and emotional run, with the players giving it everything they've got. Will it be enough to propel them to glory (or, at the very least, the avoidance of misery)? We're two more throws from finding out.

Everyone is looking for a position, everyone has done the necessary research. And with first-place atheotes enjoying a well-deserved day off, everyone's hoping for a little bit more breathing room as the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

The first match of the day is between two people that are in vastly different places: Zack and Myrddraal. Zack, after a wretched start, has really found his legs in the second half of the round robin and is looking to obtain one of the four first-round byes. Myrddraal, on the other hand, is not out of the danger zone yet, and needs but a single draw in his last two throws to make it to the knockout round. Can he get it here? Not right away, as he and Zack both throw Scissors. On the rethrow, though, there is separation: Zack throws Rock but Myrddraal has Paper. Zack curses loudly at this setback, but nobody can hear him over his opponent's shout of joy. Myrddraal is safe.
Myrddraal defeats Zack

The next two players, Visorslash and Csargo, are in prime position to take advantage of Zack's stumble. With 5.5 and 6 points respectively, a win for either of them would be huge and provide a solid amount of separation going into the final day. But both of these men are grizzled veterans and will not go down easily, and they prove it with their throws: First Paper from each, and then Rock for both on the rethrow. Mission partially accomplished for both of them, though Csargo, with the 0.5 point advantage, has to be feeling a little better when all is said and done.
Visorslash and Csargo draw

There is a shock result at the next matchup between Winston Hughes and Sigurd: Sigurd has failed to show up! After waiting for a more-than-reasonable amount of time for the Dragonslayer to reveal himself, tournament officials have no choice to award Winston the victory by default. This could have major implications on both ends of the leaderboard, with Winston now having clinched a top-four spot and Sigurd still in danger of missing out going into the final day.
Winston Hughes wins by forfeit

Up next can be termed as the Battle of the Basement: seireikhaan vs. edse. After a scorching start to the tournament, khaan got figured out and now needs a victory or at least a draw to avoid the dreaded #13 seed. edse, meanwhile, improbably, is still alive, but only barely. With a bye tomorrow, this is his final throw of the round robin, and a loss dooms him for good (a draw means there is only one other player who he could pass). Does he have it in him? Will khaan stick to his pattern or start to play mind games? The tension is very thick, but there is a quick resolution: khaan, banking on edse following up atheotes's successful use of caution, starts with Rock. edse, though, has thrown caution to the wind and gone with Paper. He now has the tiebreaker over khaan and is still alive going into the final day.
edse defeats seireikhaan

El Barto sees this result and grimaces. edse's win has meant that he is still in danger - though only temporarily, Barto hopes. Al Sipsclar, trying to keep pace with the earlier winners for a top four seed, awaits him. For once, Barto is uncharacteristically silent as he takes his place. The stakes are simply too high, for both him and Al Sips. The first throw is very tension-filled, but there is respite: there will be no rethrow. Barto has successfully covered Al Sips's Rock with his own Paper. Barto is safe, and Al Sips is most likely en route to a middle seed.
El Barto defeats Al Sipsclar

With edse's victory, BSmith stands in last place, facing a heavy favorite in top-four-seeking Jolt. However, just like Barto, he manages to pull the rabbit out of his hat and make it to safety, his Paper triumphing over Jolt's Rock.
BSmith defeats Jolt

Standings through Day 12:

atheotes: 8
Winston Hughes: 7.5
Csargo: 6.5
Zack: 6
Jolt: 6
Visorslash: 6
Al Sipsclar: 5.5
Myrddraal: 5
El Barto: 5
BSmith: 4.5
seireikhaan: 4
Sigurd: 4
*edse: 4

* - still to go on bye

atheotes and Winston Hughes have clinched first-round byes. edse, seireikhaan, and Sigurd are the only three in danger of missing out on the knockout round. Csargo, Zack, Jolt, Visorslash, and (most likely) Al Sipsclar are still in contention for the other two byes. Myrddraal, El Barto, and BSmith are just playing for seeding at this point.

All tiebreakers (if necessary) will be determined after the final set of round robin results.

Day 12 results - betting

As expected, the heaviest action is once again on seireikhaan's matchup, as a huge amount of gold is being moved on his result against edse. First, the winner: Zack has bet a shocking 100 gold on edse triumphing, and can't help but smile as he collects his winnings. khaan's misery, on the other hand, continues, as he took the 50 gold Csargo lent him, promptly put it all on himself to win, and busts out again. The expression on Csargo's face is some combination of exasperated and amused. His fault for not putting conditions on the loan, really.

Other action sees El Barto breaking even for the day, as his bet on Zack loses out but makes it up with Winston's victory by default over Sigurd.

Day 13 results

This is it. The reckoning has come for everybody. After a long, grinding, round robin full of triumph and heartbreak, it is about to end. But not before one final test.

The storylines are myriad. atheotes and Winston Hughes, their top-four spots sealed, are battling for the prestige of the #1 overall seed... or perhaps to avoid it, as no #1 has ever won the championship. Csargo, Zack, Visorslash, and Jolt, all four within a half point of each other, are tangling to take the other two byes. Al Sipsclar is in the mix too, though he has a higher mountain to climb. Myrddraal might have a chance if literally everything breaks right for him. El Barto and BSmith completed their hard work yesterday by avoiding the danger of the #13 seed, and they will look to today as a chance to build up momentum for the push ahead of them.

The greatest drama, though, lies at the bottom of the leaderboard. edse has done all he could to avoid the dreaded #13 seed by winning his last two contests, but now, he must agonizingly wait. The two people tied with him and the only other two who could miss out on the knockout round, Sigurd and seireikhaan, are battling each other on this final day. If Sigurd defeats khaan, edse is in. If the two of them draw, then edse is out. And if khaan defeats Sigurd, then edse and Sigurd will face off in a sudden death tiebreaker that could prove to be just as epic as their quarterfinal matchup in the previous tournament.

These are the stakes. Everyone is ready. edse, on bye, can't bear to watch as the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

The first match of the day is a good one. Both Zack and Jolt are in direct competition for a top four slot and a critical first-round bye. The extra day of rest could mean a lot mentally for the overworked players and could even be the difference between a title run and bowing out in the first round. The first throw proves that these two are evenly matched, as both show Scissors. There is to be no draw, though. Jolt, keeping his nerve, stays with Scissors, but it is to no avail. Zack has switched to Rock and by doing so potentially has earned himself a top-four spot. Truly he's come a long way from being prisoner to atheotes's results in the last tournament.
Zack defeats Jolt

Up next is the matchup between Al Sipsclar and BSmith, most likely one that will only determine exact seeding unless a couple of different things go Al's way. BSmith, playing for very little, still wants to put in a good effort though, and he does by matching Al Sips's Rock with his own. On the second throw, neither man flinches as they both stick with Rock, earning themselves a draw. On this final day it is a result that they can build on, but at the same time be not exactly satisfied with. Perhaps there will be a resolution in a few days' time.
Al Sipsclar and BSmith draw

Going into the final day of the round robin of the very first tournament, atheotes was the #1 seed. The rest is history: he choked away his seed, dropped to #4, and lost his first knockout match. He does not want history to repeat itself here. El Barto, wanting to be more than a footnote in this tournament, stands against him, looking to slay the giant as a means to springboard himself into the knockout round. What happens? This time, as it has for most of the tournament, there is no doubting atheotes. His Rock quickly crushes Barto's Scissors and he heads into the knockout round as the strong favorite.
atheotes defeats El Barto

Csargo is battling Winston Hughes with top-four positioning on the line. At the start of the day these two stood at second and third, both of which are respectable positions, but there could always be more. They will provide an excellent test for each other heading into the knockout round. Csargo, having not lost since Day 9, keeps his hot streak going by smashing Winston's Scissors with his Rock, thereby clinching the #2 overall seed.
Csargo defeats Winston Hughes

The penultimate match of the round robin is between Myrddraal and Visorslash. The defending champion is still holding out hope for a top four seed, just as he did last time which helped spur him onto victory. Myrddraal, after a very shaky go of things, finally climbed out of danger yesterday and is looking to start a hot streak, but starts slowly by throwing Scissors, which matches Visor's. On the rethrow, Myrddraal makes the same mistake as Jolt from earlier and sticks with Scissors, while Visor, showing his experience, correctly moves to Rock and clinches the #4 overall seed by virtue of his having the tiebreaker over Zack.
Visorslash defeats Myrddraal

At last, we come to it. The battle to avoid #13. If Sigurd wins, seireikhaan is the odd man out. If khaan wins, it goes to a tiebreaker between Sigurd and edse. And if there is a draw, then edse's good work over the past few days was for nothing. Sigurd eyes his opposition up, wondering what he will do. After all, khaan has been recently burned by people both showing caution *and* going for broke early against him. How will he react this time? Sigurd thinks... and then throws. He chooses Rock, and thus caution. He sees that khaan has done the same. It's now down to the rethrow. edse, watching from the audience, looks like he is going to be sick. Untold thousands of calculations are running through Sigurd's mind at every instant... but one result seems the most likely. It is also one he is satisfied with. Trusting his instincts, he throws Rock on the second throw... and once again, khaan has done the same, not believing his luck. By the skins of their teeth, both will be moving onto the knockout round, and poor edse will at least solace himself with the best seat in the house.
Sigurd and seireikhaan draw

Standings through Day 13:

1. atheotes: 9
2. Csargo: 7.5
3. Winston Hughes: 7.5
4. Visorslash: 7
5. Zack: 7
6. Jolt: 6
7. Al Sipsclar: 6
8. Myrddraal: 5
9. El Barto: 5
10. BSmith: 5
??. seireikhaan: 4.5
??. Sigurd: 4.5
13. edse: 4

Tiebreaker notes:
We had a few two-way tiebreakers. In these cases, I used the round robin result to break the tie. This put Csargo over Winston (Day 13), Visor over Zack (Day 4), and Jolt over Al Sipsclar (Day 4). In the case of a draw in the round robin, we go to a sudden death tiebreaker between khaan and Sigurd, in which both contestants give me as many choices as they deem necessary unless they mutually agree to a resolution.

In the case of the three-way tiebreaker between Myrddraal, El Barto, and BSmith, I looked at their records against each other. Myrddraal is 2-0, El Barto is 1-1, and BSmith is 0-2, which worked out quite well for me as I hate resolving three-way tiebreakers when everybody's 1-1 or something. :laugh4: Which means we only have to resolve one thing before the knockout round.

The Knockout Round has begun!!!

As previously mentioned, the top 4 seeds get a first-round bye, meaning they get back to sit and watch the madness for once. Seeds 5-12 will play each other in matchups determined by seeding. 5 plays 12, 6 plays 11, etc. Participants will be re-seeded after each round - i.e. the #12 seed will always play the highest seeded player left in the tournament. There will be no draws, and matches will go as long as they need. Therefore, I ask that players send me as many backup choices as they think is necessary. Win 4 matches (or 3, if you're one of the top seeds) and you are officially the Rock/Paper/Scissors champion of the Gameroom.

First Round results

At last, the true tournament has begun. After thirteen long and punishing days of the round robin, separation has been achieved. Seeds have been determined. The passive voice has been abused. Now the fun begins. From here on out, there are no draws. Matches will go as long as they need to, and people are wondering if the record of five tiebreakers set by Sigurd and edse is going to be broken.

Of course, that's not the only thing they're wondering about. Will seireikhaan break out of his funk and win a knockout round matchup for the first time since his upset victory over Sasaki Kojiro in the second tournament? Can Sigurd put a poor round robin behind him and go on a run to win it all after four tries? Can Al Sipsclar and BSmith, who met on the final day of the round robin and battled to a draw, settle their accounts? And can anyone in the first round do what has never been done before and win all four necessary matches to become champion?

The betting has been fast and furious this round, a mark of the heightened stakes as well as the fact that the bettors now have previous matches to use as data. Of today's matchups, #5 Zack defeated #12 Sigurd on Day 3, #6 Jolt beat #11 seireikhaan on Day 11, #7 Al Sipsclar and #10 BSmith drew on Day 13, and #8 Myrddraal took down #9 El Barto on Day 9. In other words, the lower seeds are not only underdogs by virtue of seeding, but also by virtue of having outright lost their round robin contests in three of the four matchups. We will see if the chalk holds.

With the stakes as high as they've ever been, whichever contestant does the best job of keeping down his nerves has the best chance of advancing. And so they all fight their private battles as the referee walks out, acknowledges the contestants, and raises his hand in the air.

"Rock... paper... scissors... shoot!"

#5 Zack vs. #12 Sigurd
Despite the disparity in seeding, Sigurd's fine knockout round record (3-0 lifetime before the semifinals) and his immense experience means that he can by no means be considered an easy out. Zack, having participated in the previous tournament - and bowing out in his first match in the knockout round - is fully aware of this and is prepared for a battle. Battle is exactly what Sigurd gives him. Zack's first throw is Scissors, but Sigurd, in no hurry, meets it with some Scissors of his own. On the rethrow, Sigurd stares Zack down, searching for weakness, but the #5 seed is able to keep his composure. He switches to Rock... but sees Sigurd's likeminded Rock. Now we're getting into truly unique territory, but Sigurd has been here before and looks, for his part, the most relaxed he's been all tournament while Zack is starting to sweat. On the second rethrow, he decides to switch it up one more time, showing Paper... and this time Sigurd has held steady with Rock. After a brutal matchup, the seedings have held and Sigurd's glittering streak of making every semifinal is finally over. He gamely congratulates Zack, shakes his hand, and walks off saluting the crowd in what could be the final match of his fine career.

#6 Jolt vs. #11 seireikhaan
Jolt is slightly annoyed at his solid performance in the round robin resulting in a first-round matchup with the Chaotic Neutral of the tournament in seireikhaan, but he consoles himself with the fact that most of khaan's attempts to shake up the status quo lately have epically backfired on himself. That said, he knows this is not going to be an easy match - khaan, having received the equivalent of a Rock/Paper/Scissors tar-and-feathering lately, is focused and out for blood. It's in Jolt's interests to end this as quickly as possible, and he goes right for the throat by throwing Paper... only to see that it matches khaan's Paper of his own. khaan raises his eyebrow once and smiles. He's gotten over the hump, and how he has the initiative. Will Jolt react well? On the second throw, he remains with Paper... but khaan, *finally*, has guessed right and thrown Scissors. With this victory, and the break from the pattern, khaan has re-assumed the title of "most dangerous opponent in the tournament". Jolt may only be the first of his victims.

#7 Al Sipsclar vs. #10 BSmith
This is the second match in a row these two have faced each other, and they each have unfinished business - the draw ensured that Al Sipsclar lost any chance of being a top-four seed, and doomed BSmith to being third in a series of three tiebreakers to determine the 8, 9, and 10 slots. Both of them angry for vengeance, they face each other with nothing but victory on their minds. However, it looks like they drew on Day 13 for a reason. Al Sipsclar starts off with Rock. So does BSmith. Of course, nothing would be this easy. Al Sipsclar moves to Paper. So does BSmith. Now, the pressure is truly on. The second tiebreaker is where we see resolutions in most of these scenarios, and this is no exception. Al Sipsclar switches to Scissors - and BSmith correctly guesses this by moving back to Rock. After five throws over two days, a victor is finally crowned in their personal battle.
BSmith advances

#8 Myrddraal vs. #9 El Barto
The two of them are exactly equal in seeding (and points accrued in the round robin), but Myrddraal does have the mental advantage going into this by virtue of his victory over El Barto on Day 9. That is the only separation the two of them have. Will a fourth straight match go to tiebreakers? Unfortunately (but fortunately for the overworked ER doctors concerned about heart attacks) it does not, with Myrddraal's Paper dispatching El Barto's Rock on the first throw.
Myrddraal advances

I've talked a lot in the tournament about the "dreaded #13" seed, but the #6 seed is proving to be just as deadly. It has now been upset by the #11 seed for the third tournament in a row.

Congratulations to the four players who advanced, as well as to the ones who lost for their great efforts. The real challenge for these four begins next round, as they get to play the top four seeds in the tournament for the right to advance to the semi-finals.

First Round results - betting

Lots of money being thrown around for this set of matchups - and oddly, most of it was not at khaan's expense but in his favor! Correctly guessing that khaan would put his malaise behind him in this round, Myrddraal, atheotes, Winston, and Csargo picked up 10, 20, 20, and 50 gold, respectively. The Zack/Sigurd and El Barto/Myrddraal matchups were similarly fruitful, though the Al Sipsclar/BSmith result dinged a couple of people. It was a good day for the people who gambled on themselves, with Myrddraal and BSmith picking up a respective 10 and 20 gold for their faith in themselves.

All in all everybody who gambled made money this round. atheotes profited the most with 60, followed by Csargo with 50, Winston with 40, and BSmith and Myrddraal with 20 each. No word on seireikhaan's financial situation and how he was impacted by the results.

Since I won't be around to make further bets...

If khaan should win, I'm prepared to lend him the full 340 on two conditions:

(i) he must go all-in on himself in the semi and the final

(ii) if he succeeds, I take 60% of the total
