I have also played a bit with the stats.
I have modded the Handgun to make a carbine type musket that cavalry (dragoons, carabiniers) might use, with a slower reload time and less accuracy. It can also be used for poorly trained infantry.
I slowed down the rates of fire from the basic 1.7 stats actually because of the rotating ranks.
I also gave most infantry 1 supporting rank to help against frontal cav attacks as well as some small bonuses against cavalry (which I may remove).
It's tough to balance... becuase the AI is really inept at using the new units, you really have skirmish against a human and try different stuff out.
LeBob: Your messenger is in the top right hand corner of your screen. I sent you a test message a little while ago, hopefully it went through.
To Cuirassier66 and Soapyfrog: If you two want a live target to test your unit stats on, I volunteer my services. It would be nice to play against an army that doesn't skirmish away everytime I say "boo". If your interested in that, message me with a time (GMT) and day that would be good for you to play. I think all it would involve is you sending me your prod11 and projectile files. No biggy.
Lord of Storms: Thanks for listening The senior officer on the field, the one yelling at that cannon battery over, thanks you for considering lifting the responsibility of command from his unworthy shoulders

Dol , I am not the expert on this that would be Kraellin he works up alot of the Avatars for the Org . I know what you are asking is possible you just have to size the photograph properly in a photoshop type program and overwrite/replace and existing portrait in the game
I'd like to see two types a mounted and dismounted. I wouldn't give either of them firearms, just a sword, as it was a pretty rare day back then when officers would pick up a musket for the purpose of firing on the enemy. Maybe you could give them a handgun but nothing beyond that.
I was thinking that maybe having the dismounted version with 10 men would be enough but maybe 20 would be better.
They won't be pumping up anybody's morale ( unless of course you get a sp campaign going) and 10 men seems a little fragile to me. I'd like to see the dismounted because who wants to ride their charger into the breach at Badajoz? Not me brother
As for their actual prod stats, well until you get the manuever unit, projectile stats are all balanced, I'd wait to do them as then you'd be working off a good information base. I'd just make sure the morale and honor was higher.
LeBob,
I sent you an email, hope you got it.
The next map I'm doing is Borodino. Not the whole battle field just the Raevsky( probably spelled that wrong) redoubt and surrounding area. Basically the center of the line with Borodino on the attackers map edge and the redoubt deep in the center defenders position. I also plan on fixing and updating the maps I've already done as the ones I released have some topography details I wasn't sure about and some iffy texturing.
After i'm done those I'm going to start on the Peninsular campaign as I have an excellent reference for it in Captain John Kincaid's " Adventures in the the Rifle Brigade". I'll probably start with Busaco and work my way through his book from there. I have a nice map of Badajoz also so I'll definitely be doing that. I'm dying to storm those breaches. Too bad we didn't get ladders in MTW

Does this require some sort extensive knowledge?
No.
A copy of photoshop and a scanner, if the image is from
a format that needs a scanner.
Just clone the image onto a tga from the game.
This is not the only way but it's simple and it works.
I like simple it gets results quicker. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Heyas,
Just tried some of the units in the 1.7 release. Pretty cool stuff. One thing I noticed that when the Scots were busy gunning down the Young Guard, the Young Guard bodies were appearing as dead horses. I know those guys were big men but holy cow Anybody else getting this? Maybe i just have a bad install...
I just put the wrong coords in the deadpage coords.txt thats all.
Just open the file and copy the coords from another
unit that does not have a horse.
A new update will be available shortly.

What I am more looking for is a way to make a picture resemble the MTW portraits in style. You'll notice that the MTW portraits all resemble oil paintings made during the Renaissance. Is it possible to make an actual photograph of a person look like an oil painting of the same person?

Good point. Let me explain:
I don't know how you guys are doing for portraits but with so many different factions, I'm guessing you don't have nearly enough. My thought is that if suitable portraits are difficult to come by ( lots of time spent scouring history books) then a more feasable option may be to convert appropriate photographs into portraits for your mod. If it is easy and quick to do, then all that is necessary is a large number of photographs to work with. This is not difficult. Most sites that track celebrities include head shots that may work for this purpose. I'm also thinking quite a few patrons here would donate pictures if it meant being a Napoleonic general.
How are you guys doing with portraits and how quickly are you finding them?
If you like the idea, I can see if I can track down a site with suitable photographs.
P.S: If nothing else, this idea is a way for the people who helped build this mod to insert themselves into the game.

I see, then we could have me as Napoleon. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Or GW Bush as Fredrick the Great. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I like the idea and it has potential.
However I think we will stick to ripping off
other media sources and modders for now. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
It's easier that way believe me.
We have a lot of portraits that can be converted already.
Some have been so far.
I still have to confirm we can use them in manner
that will break down according to faction.

I'm still busy with the portraits. As for the number - I probably have enough Generals, Spies and Emissaries. I'm still lacking princesses, Admirals and especially Clerics (Priests, Bishops and Cardinals).
So if anyone would be willing to research the www for the portrait types mentioned above I will be more than thankful - actually I posted this before but unfortunately there was no reaction. It's WORK to go through - sometimes - pretty boring sites in search of these portraits. Probably this is the reason I'm doing it alone until now :-(.
I think it might be quite difficult to combine faces from photographs with other parts (uniform collars etc.) from oil paintings from that time and keep up a certain amount of quality and consistency. Not technically - should be easy in PS - but a whole lot of work - probably more than researching and scanning.

Hi LK http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
ROFL - everytime I ask people to help with research it gets rather qiet - it seems to be the easiest way to be left alone. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
I messed around a bit with the frontend images (cloth-type background aso..)and got them running, but when I want to load a game the red loading box fills halfway and then I can hear a pinging sound from an errormessage but I'm not able to see it. It's in the background somewhere on the desktop and alt+tab ist no more working neither is ctrl+alt+del. I have to restart the PC.
Any Idea?
I did as you told me by opening the original files and just copying the changes into them before saving. And it does look good - until the second half of the loading box.
As for the portraits I'm still busy converting them - should be around 150 now with probably another 100 still left to do (not quite sure if the numbers are right but should be around that).
Will post some more examples soon.

Well for a one man show your not doing to bad
anyway http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
when you save the files you create in photoshop you
will not end up with the same format as the file in
MTW as a rule.
I'm going to give a simplistic example
for my sake. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Open new tga same size and so on as tga in game,
add new image to new tga, save, add to game.
It won't work. simple ok. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Second option
copy an original tga from the game
open said tga in photo shop
clone new image onto said tga.
Save said tga
Put said tga in the game you will
see it. It may not be the most difficult
correct way to do it but it works.
The lbms are worse. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
so what did you change and how?
BTW please don't post it here it could get messy. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Truth be told, it was actually the very post that you directed me to that gave me the idea initially. I was asking about the ease of accomplishing such a task precisely because I thought it might be a more viable alternative to the research involved in getting authentic portraits. As you stated though, the task is too labor intensive to really be worth the trouble so...
Might I impose upon you to grant me a request Hal? The identification picture for my college is, by pure coincidence, a nearly perfect thumbnail of roughly the same proportions as a MTW portrait. Might I send you that picture that it may be rendered into a portrait in the style of Medieval Total War?

Apollinaris of Posat
http://www.capuchinfriars.org.au/apollina.htm
He exists the same era as Napoleon. He was killed during the French Revolution after refusing to swear allegiance to the Revolution. The site has names along the left side of the screen. These are Franciscans of note. Little attention needs to be paid to era as Franciscans are remakably consistant about their attire. Several pertraits there but you might want to religate them all to priests considering that bishops and cardinals looked MUCH different. Still, Franciscans did alot of the church's grunt work so it seems fitting that they would be represented as priests in the mod.
Another site. Much easier to navigate and some of the pictures look usable

@DoL
have a look at www.npg.org.uk - its the far most useful site for these portraits I ever found.
A very good example what I'm looking for is: http://www.npg.org.uk/live....ole=sit (http://www.npg.org.uk/live/search/portrait.asp?name=cardinal&ow=restrict&search=as&desc=&grp=&lDate=1850&LinkID=mp04973&occ=&eDate=1750&medium=painting&rNo=2&role=sit)
Prerequisites:
1. The portrait should have been made from 1750-1850
2. The face of the sitter should be roughly the size of an MTW portraits face - not less. Larger is ok http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
3. If it comes with a name it should be used as file name - later I can create the names lists from these.
4. The style should - if possible - be like an oil painting. It's much more work to change the look of drawings, prints or lithographs into the appropriate style.
I.e. Goyas paintings were very useful for me but I don't know enough portraitists of that time so I could search the web for their names.
What I'm still lacking:
1. Generals: Still Austrians missing (white Uniform - i have some 12 or 15), I have enough Russian, British, Prussian, Spanish and French
2. Admirals: I have mostly British (no surprise) but not enough of them (high priority)
3. Emmissaries: I have enough of them, but would accept more if the portraits are nice (low priority)
4. Spies and assassins: see Emmissaries
5. Priests, Bishops, Cardinals: I have not more than 20 - so lots of them missing (high priority)
6. Princesses: I have not more than 50 - so still some of them missing (but not at a high priority)
7. Monarchs: Not sure about what to do with them - of course I have the ones that ruled through the Napoleonic period - but probably they will not be enough. And in the game they never will be assigned correctly.
1-7 for Muslim (Ottoman Empire): I only have 4 or 5 portraits at all - so nearly all of them missing.
I guess someone who is more skillful than I am in modding the gamefiles should start thinking about the structure the Nap Mod will use. Will we try to use the religious structure in some way? During the Napolonic Period religions were not really a matter neither created differences between the factions (except maybe for the Ottoman Empire).
So what for could these structures be useful. May we be able to use them for assigning the right portraits to some of the factions? I.e. by dividing by uniform colours (blus for French and Prussian, red for British a.s.o.)?
Or will there be other items like development trees which will not match but override these needs?
I guess that the implementation into and the use of the religious system structure within the Nap Mod could be one of the most challenging tasks to do.
When considering this of course we should think about the development trees for the different factions. Hopefully we'll find a way to use them for grouping our Napoleonic factions so these groups could match the existing religious structure.
Just some thoughts...
In the meantime I will go on with the portraits - btw DoL - you didn't tell me what you would like to be - a princess I assume http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Mod (http://www.zen11872.zen.co.uk/)Stormer, here is the mirror link for the Nap. mod you should be able to get what you need here, as far as the Mods release date The Lords still have some work to do before the entire mod is released, with VI's release we have been busy sorting things out. The campaign script is being tweaked, trade issues, Names/Titles etc. being addressed I am sure once we complete and release the Mod as a whole the end result will be worth the wait http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif So until then enjoy the Unit Betas and keep sending us your feedback. Thanks LOS http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Ricky get over it lol, the infantry made up the majority of a napoleonic army. Never ever do a frontal assault, use diversional cavs and cavs to attack the flanks to cause disorder, then lead a bayonet charge with infantry in the centre while the enemy muskies are disordered from the flank cav attack and youll have a nice clean rout. Like krazy said this is only the beta, evolution has only just begun.
Long live the nap mod and may it reagn hard in VI.
TenkiSoratoti
Gaaah forgot to say, krazy the green jackets make the brits the best and the same goes with the jaegar infantry for the prussians. I think we have made a rule now not to bring them against nations that dont have those long range snipers.

Ok, i was merely pointing out that i have wooped ricky's arse so many times and he aint wooped me once at nap mod yet so ha
Anyway LordKrazy i can get you a huge database on all the units that fought at the battle of Waterloo, ligny, quatre bras, nivelles etc if you really want, im not sure how deep youll be going into the time but it would be a sin not to recreate those particular battles.
Plus wellingtons finest troops were located in the colonies (now known as america http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif), im not sure whether yuo'll want those troops either? because i think they were present in the peninsula campaigns....

OH its on
Lk i was wondering is it possible for u to create new formation say instead of the wedge maybe tunr it into a sqaure for cav charges and they get morale. also i got 2 bugs iv noticed
-when french young guard die there bodies are horses
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
-the royal dragoons some times when chargeing have a shadow below them which is the soldier on horses back but wearing blue lol its weird.

We are currently modifying the Nap.Mod campaign script to adapt it to VI, A new tech tree and buildings are in the works also. I would say a few months sounds about right , We are striving to make The Mods first release a quality project and this takes time , with VI now out we had to decide which platform to use for the Mod and we chose VI for now, and with that we all had to give VI a good going over to get used to the changes made to the files. So a little patience and the end result will be worth the wait. DOL, The Lords will most likely release a 1.1 version of the mod for those who do not choose to buy VI ,all in good time. As to the addition of "Heroes" this is an option we were looking forward to as the names tables in V 1.1 leave alot to be desired in adding names ( anyone who has done this knows what I mean)So we will be taking advantage of that feature, as to who appears and what there stats are remains to be discussed, for a Napoloeonic campaign some choices are obvious http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Quick question (I know another one)
You wouldn't happen to have any idea yet how big the final file will be to download?
It's just that i am on a 56k modem, and I'd hate to not be able to get this mod if it turns out to be HUGE or something.
Tenkisora, I will be back to playing Nap Mod Mp as soon as my exams are done and I don't have to waste valuable MP time revising. Don't give up hope, I will always be willing to play it.

Well I had some things to deal with recently
that left LBA working on his own.
This means we won't have another unit release
for a week or so as alot of files have to be
sorted still.
As for the masses , well I have a load of
bmps waiting to be turned into bifs
and untill then I don't have them either. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
You'd be surprised how quick the masses
(all 12 of you) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
get the files after we finish them.
On second toughts remember the
guards that became horses and the cav that

Hi,
I have been monitoring your mod for some time now, ever since I first stumbled across it. I have eagerly downloaded every version up to 1.7, and I just couldn't help but offer a few words of encouragement.
I love your mod. You have all done a fabulous job creating it. I actually play it in preference to the original Medieval game. Don't get me wrong, Medieval is quite a good game. But I guess it was the game we had to have before Rome : Total War.
But seriously, back to your mod. It is brilliant, and I can't wait to get hold of the completed version.
What would be heaven? Napoleon: Total War using the Rome:Total War game engine
Keep up the good work. People like you extend the pleasure that we get out of games, and give us much more enjoyment from them.

To GreasePaintMonkeyBrains
You defenetely can help I was making some historical battles (Marengo) but since I worked on the tech tree, the music, and other stuff I let this down a little....
So here are something you could help with. Maybe you could lead in the development of some historical campaign. Starting maybe with the italian campaign (first Napoleon campaign)...I can help with the modding and finding some info.
To all, Check the Napoleon mod web site at http://napoleontotalwar.tripod.com
What can you find there, Starting tomorrow, you will have an update on where does the mod stand, some screenshots and maybe more if I have time.
The mod is progressing well as LOS mentioned. The music is done and will be probably a 7 Meg file (mp3) that will need to be changed into wav (wav are way to big to be downloaded).
If you have any oilpainting images of units please let us know and we will see if we could use them.
Thanks for your interest.

Heya Lords, just a quick question:
Can I use those units in VI if I insert manually the appropriate entries for the respective files? Names, descriptions, deadpage, of course the Unitprod... am I missing something?
I used to do that alot in MTW but with VI I am kinda lost and I'd appreciate any help. Are there any other txts besides the above three in which I have to add something?
Becuase I've gone through the whole thing and I got the message "unknown Unit in column 2 row 183" - which is actually the first of the custom units I added.
Am I doing something wrong? bifs and txts are all in the appropriate folders.
Lord Krazy

Ros you got the idea. The error sounds like
you have messed up the prod11.
Have you just added the lines from the mtw prod11
to the VI prod11? If so this will happen.
If you can be bothered you will have to
add the units youself to the prod11.
i.e copy existing unit from VI prod11
add edit the name and add the other entries.
It's what I'm doing right now http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hi. I just downloaded your superlative Mod, and I am really enjoying it. Your dedication and commitment shines through in the gameplay and presentation.
Anyway, I wonder if you can help me. One of the things I was excited about was the new moveable cannon. Unfortunately, when I take one in battle it only comes with 2 crewman, so it can't fire because there are 'not enough crewmen'. Also, they can't move. Is this a bug, or am I just being stupid? If you guys are trying to make a campaign out of this in VI, then there is a bug you might want to consider. Currently, every king in both the Viking campaigns and the regular campiagn in version 2.0 dies at the age of 56. It seems to me that such a bug would likely shorten the time a person could play a campaign if it is not fixed. CA is not planning on fixing this for a good long while so it may be incumbent on you if the campaign idea is to succeed.

Not too sure about Old Nosey being such a statesman. If I remember, he was a bit of a duffer at school and so forth and his family was highly dissapointed in his academia. He had really no other choice than the military since affairs of state didn't suit him. I would say a maximum of 3 Accumen for good old Wellers.
On the other hand, Napoleon ought to have a full 9 stars in his Accumen and no other ruler should come close to that.
Just my two cents.

- Light and heavy Cavalry training center
- College of Art (improve happiness people)
- college of Science (improve Weapon)
- School of Officer (improve discipline and moral)
- College of medicine (improve moral)
- Bank
- Recognition/Merit Office (recognize elite soldiers)
- Improve infrastructure
- Scientific expedition
- and many of the original buildings

Of the major European powers (Austria, France, Gr. Britain, Prussia & Russia) one could make a very strong argument for Austria. Beyond this I believe the best European cavalry of the period came from the smaller Germanic states. Aside from the loss of prestige, political influence and manpower the defection of Saxony and other Germanic states from the side of France to the Allies in 1813-1814 also deprived Napoleon of the best sources of quality horses and horsemen.

Just a point about Welly being a poor administraitor.
I tend to dissagree. Yes, he did seem to have a poor grasp of subjects at school, but what do Lattin and Greek realy have to do with running a country?
Wellington was a master of organising his supplies, in fact he had to be so good that his army never needed to pillage from the local population.
Wellington also had experieince of governing in India, his Brother was Governer over there, and together they effectively ran the country.
I think 3 Acumen is a little underestimating his skills. 5 or even more is around about my opinion.

I have posted this as a separate thread. No replies as yet. In desperation, I am posting the questions here. Hope someone from CA takes a look at this:
***********************************************************
I am starting this separate thread as the original Napoleonic thread has become too long and it is possible for the signals to get buried in the noise.
This is a humble request for help from the CA programmers and designers to make the Napoleonic Mod for MTW as realistic as possible.
My background in the Napoleonics Wargaming goes back to the TalonSoft hex based games. I have played Waterloo:Napoleon's Last Battle from BreakAway Games as well. All the while the longing was there for a true 3D Napoleonic game that takes into account terrain features, has decent sprites, has weather properly modelled etc etc. It was a recurring wet dream for me to imagine how it would look if somebody does a Napoleonic game on the Shogun engine.
Then came MTW with the thundering cannons and fusil-wielding musketeers. I found myself ever so close to the dream of 3D Napoleonic nirvana. The start of effort by Lord Krazy and the other good lords to do a Napoleonic Mod was the final spark. I threw myself into the fray to contribute my little iota of modding goodness.
When I look at the MTW engine for use in a Nap mode, I almost cry; it is almost there but not quite You know that feeling when a beautifully crafted tool would almost fit your needs but not quite The story is the same with the MTW engine. We need a few changes before we could faithfully simulate Napoleonics using this jewel.
To begin with, cannons were not movable. The good Lord Krazy fixed that. We now have horse guns that gallop along with charging cavaliers This is a good example of playing around with the graphics and the unit data files to get a new unit. There is other stuff that would require something more drastic. So enough of the rambling and let me come to the point.
We, the modders that are working on the Napoleonic mod for MTW would like to get some help from the CA programmers and producers on the following topics. It is understood that not all of the requests could be honoured but hey I still believe in Santa Claus We also understand that the schedules for the programmers are extremely tight but we believe that the Napoleonic mod would only give the MTW longer legs.
To aid clear communication, I have numbered the wish list items below. I have also classified them into two categories, easy and challenging. Without further ado here it comes:
1* (Easy) In the tactical battle screen does the AI have an unfair advantage if I set the difficulty level at EXPERT? When tuning the troop stats I always set the difficulty level to EXPERT in my custom designed battles (for example to test the melee results between heavy and light cavalry). I have a feeling that the AI has an unfair advantage at the EXPERT setting. Is this true?
2*(Easy) Column #45, Unit Specialties Labels in the Crusaders_Unit_Prod11.txt has the following strings and enumerated values for some of the units :"DEFENDING_RIVER(1), DEFENDING_CASTLE(1)". Are there any other strings that the AI would recognize? For example "DEFENDING_FOREST(4), DEFENDING_BUILDING(3)". I am trying to make light infantry deadly in the woods, forests and other broken terrain. I have not found a way to fix this. This might help.
3*(Easy) Lancers and heavy cavalry had an advantage when attacking infantry. Lancers had a longer reach and the heavies could just break through by sheer weight. There is a column that says Cav_Attack_Bonus. But none for Infantry_Attack_Bonus. How do I give an infantry attack bonus to an unit?
3*(Challenging) How to make infantry form square when being charged by cavalry? The square formation should be nearly impervious to a cavalry charge but should be vulnerable to volley fire from deployed infantry and should be very vulnerable to artillery. I have played quite a few battles with the Napoleonic mod on the MTW. The inf vs cav interaction is just not right When charged by cavalry, infantry almost always runs away. Rather it should form squares and weather the charge.
Could we change the animation for one of the formations, say the wedge, and change it into a square formation? The wedge is not a Napoleonic formation anyway. Is it possible to change the animation for the W command from a wedge to a hollow square and give anti-cavalry bonus to the unit only when the unit is in this formation? If we could it would be perfect.
Enough for now. More coming later. Thanks for a wonderful game.

Um, all oficers in the British army bought their commisions. Only a very, very small number were promoted from the ranks. It was the way the British army was run. Most of the soldiers would only trust an officer who had 'true breeding'.
The French on the other hand promoted frequently from the ranks and several of Napoleons Marshalls were originaly Privates. Napoleon wanted quality, not men with money.

Guys, help me out on this one. Any thoughts on the following problems?

I can help you with the first concern.
I am prety positive that on Expert seting the AI gets a moral bonus of +2or3 (not certain on which). I would suggest that you test units on Normal or Hard, as on easy your troops gain the moral bonus.

I am no modder, but I am sure that i read somewhere that formations were hard coded and couldn't be changed http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
I believe someone was working along the lines of giving Infantry high bonuses for being in deep rancks, but this is just not the same as having a square that is safe on all sides from every cavalry charge. (Althought there were one or two examples of cavalry breaking squares, but not enough to make an exception.)
Cuirassier66
06-09-2003, 17:47
I am the (official) stats adjuster for the Lords group. Indeed I have given the infantry some additional bonus for using deep ranks. This in a crude way simulates the square. But not quite.
Have you played Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Battle?
Brother Derfel
06-09-2003, 17:54
No, I havn't tried it. Do you recomend it?
The only Napoleonic Computer games i posses are the BattleGround series Napoleon in Russia, and another game that i can't quite remember as it is boxed away somwhere, it was based on the 1813-14 campaign I think.

Napoleons last battle is a bit of a flawed game but playable none the less, its where the sounds for the sound pack are got from http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Fields of glory is an all time classic if you want some poor sprites but good gameplay.
Cuirrassier after playing alot of battles with uxbridge, deep formation works just as effectively as a square i think. Cavalry cant smash through it due to there being too many troops. The infantry in deep are always losing badly but the numbers they have easily send cavs of any kind running home to mummy.

Giving the attribute "STRONG" in the unit class labels for infantry units seems to make them stand fast and receive cavalry with closed ranks.
I am experimenting this further. Hopefully I would be able to push the tweaks into the 1.8 version of the mod.

TenkiSoratoti

Well if full authentic, military tactics cannot be implemented, then i'll be dissapointed with Cossacks 2. However, it is Napoleonic and is something I like quite alot, so I will buy it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Cossacks was perhaps the worst thing to ever happen to gamers of the Age of Wallenstein to Frederick (ie. between the Middle Ages w/c is very well depicted in games and the Napoleonic wars which are also pretty well depicted. Excepting, of course, the American Revolution.)
I suppose it's ignored because it is better known for the splendor of its uniforms rather than solid tactics, but there were many great battles, many 'famous victories' during this period.
The game has many good points w/c I hope are picked up by other companies like, oh lets say, Creative Assembly. I like the idea that a company must be formed from a CO (in reality this would be a Captain, an Ensign and a couple of NCOs) w/c 'take posts' like they would in reality. I was an ROTC company commander and that brings back very fond memories. The troop types are more than complete as are the technologies. There is one major flaw though... The game is an RTS. Which often than not means mindless AI assaults en masse with precious little maneuver. Its all fireworks and blood, no solid 'strategy' no place for the armchair Marlborough or Frederick to really get a taste of Blenheim or Mollwitz. For pitys sake there are no morale rules. More men died of disease than of bullets in war and realistically troops should not take the horrible casualties that they do in Cossacks. They're not soldiers, they're robots in uniform.
Now, if it had been a Total War or Napoleon's Last Battle type of game, with those techs and units then that would have been perfect. As it is you got all this history, beautiful graphics, troop types and techs dressed up with no where to go.

*French Lanciers de la Garde (the famous Imperial Guard Red Lancers regiment, always brigaded with the Chasseurs a Cheval de la Garde)
*French Line Lancers
*French Gendarmes d' Elite ( French Mounted Military Police, Guard status, very similar in shape, size, uniform and experience to the Horse Grenadiers, more than capable of charging boot to boot with the heavies in a pinch)

A new development in the Nap Mod. I have been able to add the Formation "Square" to the AI's formations file, and by increasing the priority quotient the AI is choosing it exclusively for defensive formation. I am in the process of tweaking some of the settings to change the units that comprise the Square. Thanks to GilJaySmith who graciously provided CA's formation Data without which this would not have been possible. Some problems still need to be addressed, in the face of a Cav charge the AI will break ranks so the Square seems useless? I was able to add the command HoldTheLine which only helps the AI to reform into square after the initial charge not literally Hold The Line so it is a mixed blessing ,the AI will now have Square in its defensive repetoir but some things still need to be ironed out. I am not sure if the Brunswikers are available in 1.8 cos i don't have it yet, but if they are not then they will be essential for the Waterloo campaign.
To represent this brigade at the very least these units would be needed (off the top of my head):
Avante Guard
Deaths Head Hussars
Lancers
Line Infantry
Light Infantry
Also are French Carabiniers available yet, as they would be needed?
Marines of the Imperial Guard?
Polish lancers?

Well, not actual British foot troops, as the current units are quite sufficient for that (perhaps a light infantry unit if 1.8 does not already offer that).
What would be usefuel to add would be allied Infantry units, such as Spanish and portugese in British service.
Also if the KGL have not yet been done, they should at the very least recieve a rifle armed light unit.
I suppose a unit of Foot guards would be nice as well.

Not happy with the Square alone I have now added the Defensive formation "The Block" to the AI's repetoir of Defensive formations, I was not pleased with the rudimentary square formed by the AI it is more a 3 sided Rectangle, dont get me wrong I am happy that the AI can now use the Square I just want to add as much dimension to the Battle as possible ."The Block" is just that a solid square with the Royal unit protected in the background. In 1 of my test battles the AI formed up in the Block I sent 4 Cav units over the hill to engage on 3 sides to see what the AI would do, after the initial engagement I withdrew my Cav to lure the AI over the hill to my waiting Infantry, When the AI saw my infantry it immediatley went back to its defensive Block formation embedding the Royal unit to the rear. The gun battle ensued we exchanged fire until slowly each unit got whittled down to nothing, but lo and behold the Royal unit was protected to the last and still intact. So I think this formation although not conventinal might serve some purpose in our campaign. The tweaking continues.

Convert the Camels into gray horses, and convert the Camel riders or whatever elite camel unit there is (dont play Egyptian very often!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif into the Scots Greys. The look will be right but the horses will be 'fiercer'

Sadly the AI has so to speak a mind of its own, By inputting the data for the AI to form square and block does not mean the AI will be invincible it is just meant for variety. Like I stated earlier in the face of a cav charge any formation will break ranks unless told to hold and still even then. The data I used for the formations is just that we can not control evry aspect of the AI reactions, what I have noticed if given time the AI will try to reform the square or block when you withdraw and regroup.By changing the priority quotient you can get more of a variety. Good idea Stormer. Although perhaps for certain 'elite' units like the Greenjackets this could be lower. If we are taking 200men = a batalion, the Greenjackets should have much less as they tended to operate as companies being assigned individualy to army divisions and brigades.

What causes great concern is the square stiuation, I understand this is to be addressed by using columns. Will this still work if attacked in the rear?
Suggest that Greenjackets be renamed Rifles/riflemen and indeed need to be in smaller units.
Is there still some AI forcing units to fear shot?, this may no longer be required.

I have made some important strides in the infantry vs cavalry combat balancing. Here is the summary:
*I have resigned myself to the fact that infantry battalions can not form square individually.
*I have set NUM_PREFERRED_RANKS for almost all regular infantry to 8 ranks. Only exclusive light infantry units like the Prussian Jegers start with three ranks.
*I have set NUM_SUPPORTING_RANKS bonus to 7 so that all the ranks in an 8 deep column would be able to give support against a cavalry charge.
*What I have modelled is essentially the "Battalion Mass" formation used with a good degree of success by the Austrians at Aspern-Essling and Wagram.
*Battalion mass was very vulnerable to artillery fire. (So is the square formation.)
*Battalion mass had very reduced firepower (So is the square formation.)
*Battalion mass had a good degree of defence against a cavalry charge (Just like the the square formation.)
*The human player has to give the command "Hold Formation (H)" to the battalion mass in case of a cav charge. Otherwise the inf runs away. The AI automatically does it I think if you are threatening the AI inf with your cav.
*Artillery still has problem. One direct hit and the battery is vapourised.
The infantry vs cavalry problem now stands thus:
You are attacking a brigade of infantry perched squarely on the top of a hill, protected by two regiments of cavalry. You have a brigade of inf and two regiments of cav.
If you deploy your inf in 3 ranks line before climbing the hill, you risk a rout when the cav comes charging downhill (d'Erlon, anyone!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
The options are:
*Hold your inf in 8 ranks deep formation to weather the eventual cav charge (and be shot at by the enemy inf in line)
*Neutralise the enemy cav with your own before sending in the inf deployed in line
*Move the inf uphill in battalion mass, let the enemy cav come to you. You could weather the charge as you have 7 supporting ranks bonus. Send your own cav to the flanks. Chase away the marauding enemy horsemen. Then, only then, deploy your infantry in line and attack the enemy inf. With a bit of finesse it could be done.
I made all of the changes mentioned above yesterday. Lord Krazy, shall I send the modified files with the battalion mass formation stats for the infantry?

Dear Marshall McDonald,
Please read my earlier posts on the challenges of using the MTW engine for a Napoleonic Mod.
The engine is so close but not close enough. I have written a couple of emails to the CA staff. No replies yet.
In my opinion, the MTW engine still has some life for a Napoleonic Mod. They should have done a Napoleonic AddOn instead of those screaming Viking hordes.

Thanks for all the feed back
The idea of creating a database i'm affraid is out of the question none of it is in data format, all books, but I'll assist with any questions.
One suggestion that I have recived from a buddy was to change the British Infantry to 2 ranks for optimised fire power, but I'm thinking that this was the case anyways with the game. That being so how do you force the other nations to use 3 ranks, or am I just being fickle.
Are units in column benifiting from greater moral than those deployed in line?
What is the suggested scale of the units in the game?
1 unit = 1 coy, 1battalion, regiment, brigade etc....
Does 1 gun represent a battery of 8-12 guns?
The unit size as is suggests companies all be it oversized, once again am I being fickle. The mod has all the feel and action I would expect from a Napoleonic game, setting scale aside. But does the scale thing not hamper the making of historic battles. Alot of the guys have been talking about Waterloo (possibly the most uninteresting battle of the period), theres just no way you could get all of those fantasic units that have be made represented in one game.
Looking forward to a campaign version.

A 60 man infantry unit represents a battalion of 600 muskets (about the average strength of a field battalion at that time.)
A 40 man cavalry unit represents a regiment with 400 sabres on the field.
Attack columns do receive a bonus. If infantry forms up 8 ranks deep, it benefits from the NUM_SUPPORTING_RANKS parameter (which is set to 7)

level 3: a townhouse
level 4: a townhouse + 1 house
level 5: a townhouse + 3 houses
concenrning the building bif's, I have seveal bmp's to use but I still have problem with the colors so I would like you to try on some...send me an email and I will reply with the bmp's.

Anyone have any interesting stories on Napoleon's Line Chasseurs a Cheval. Re unit descriptions. Can't seem to find anything special to say about them other than what they were.
Scots is not a word used in Scotland, Scottish is. But suggest changing Scots infantry to Highland. Non Highland units looked in the main like English Line units. My local unit, the Seaforth Highlanders lost the right to wear the kilt after losing honor in combat. But pround to say that the Gordon Highlanders 92nd also came from my area.

Something about them withdrawing from a position in India before the Napoleonic wars. On their return they were dishonored and played no part in the Napoleonic wars. Me thinks they ended up on garrison duties in the East Indies.
They were always under dogs there after, as a regiment. Just goes to show what one fearful mistake could do in the British Army.

I have to agree with De Moray on this point, but didnt really want to mention it till later. The uniforms of the ScotsLineInf are clearly those of Highlanders (i like to think they are the Black Watch), as De Moray pointed out, Scots Line Inf wore tartan trousers, not kilts. Do they yet have a melee bonus over their line counterparts....? they should do. Apart from that little rant, everything is going well at my end

PS De Moray: Dont worry too much about about the chasseurs, a description of what they were and what function they served will suffice. To be honest, i want to try and cut out any references to real battles or persons in these descriptions.

Hmmm, well it could be argued that there was little difference in melee ability between the Highlanders and the Line, although i would be inclined to say thet were more fierce fighters. After all, they were the direct descendents of the earlier Clansmen, a warrior caste, and there can be little doubting that they were all physically big men.....i would be happy to see them have a melee bonus.

Hello http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
If you want a rough version of the VI unit's mod
mail me at TheLords@thelordz.co.uk
and I'll send you a link .
I say rough because it replaces alot of
default files still so a second install is best
unless you know what you are doing or you just don't care. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
All I know is it will work with a clean install
of VI and forget about plating VI as all the
animations have changed.
I mention this as It's been asked a few times
as to why the MTW unit are all wierd when
you install the MOD?
Well it's because I refuse to have
any animation in the mod that is better than our http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
OK seriously http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif it's because the game has limited amount
of unit animations files available , so if we wish to add one we must remove one .
VI allows for ten custom animations files to be added ,
which is great However we have already added
more than double that and people keep asking for more . http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif So you'll never be able to play both
on the same install ,well untill it comes
with an installer that restores the default files.
This will happen but not for a while yet.
We have made smaller sprites in an effort to try
get more units in less bifs and we are testing them at the moment .Non the less a limit exists which will need to
be addressed . I still don't know how many it will be in the end and exactly which ones .
You'll be the first to know , well after the team

Hmmmm, thats a very good point about the limitation on unit numbers LK.
May I make a suggestion.
Do away with the current 'specific' units (e.g HessenHomburg Hussars, Pavlograd Hussars, Marioupal Hussars....) and replace them with just 1 general unit. So instead of having 3 hussar units for the Russians you would only have 1.
There is also a certain historical argument for this as well because you would only have 1 regiment of each of those specific troops and at the moment you are free to build as many as you want.
Just a thought and probably not very high on your to do list, but could solve part of a problem.
Lord De Moray
07-06-2003, 11:37
Very good point Brother Derfel, Really Hussars for all the nations are very much the same, more or less unless guard units. Adding a generic General unit in one of those spare spaces would be ideal. Kinda a general model and staff, say a unit of 6-10 models in bicorns etc...

French line wore Bicorns for a good deal of the early revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. I have forgotten when they adopted the Shako. Also i have noticed that the cannon batery aprears buried, although my Howitzers and 12lb's do not.

Could'nt agree more my friend. Just all the other units have shakos.
1806/07 Is when the shako came into use.

Just the imperial guard retained the bicorne in their ranks as well as their old fashioned uniforms.

Hmm.. the Emperial guard retained the bicorn only as an undress hat. Since the creation of the Consular Guard in 1800 the had adopted the Bearskin, but correct that they retained the older cut of coat with the longer tails.
LK are the units in the mod so far everything you will be doing or do you plan to add more at this stage, just realised that I had written descriptions for French Lancers, guard lancers, middle guards etc...
Spot on to Cuirassier for the square effect seems to work well. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

1. LK do you require a list of all the nations generals and their qualities for the campaign? I mean not the leaders but the rest.
Well for the campaign the generals are given random
names only the kings and heros can be given names
as far as I know . LOS has a lot of names already
but I'm not sure to what extent so ask him first
what he has and he may need.
Quote[/b] ]2. Why are the French line in bicorns, just wondering?
Because they wore them . http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
Quote[/b] ]3. Would there be any reason why the howitzers and cannon batteries are poorly diplayed on my machine, they appear buried in the ground.
So your machine is the same as mine . http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
The guy that did the camer angles messed up.
I'll have a word with him . http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

The campaign is suposed to start before 1806.
The bicorns and the tricorn that will be done
are for that period , the militia unit might be made
in that fashion also . A French line unit with a shako hat
will be added too . BTW the French line infantry
was the first unit we added. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Different version to De Moray it seems .
One version has the wrong bif tagged in the prod
yours I believe and the other has the dodgy angles.

No some more will be added the French Lancers
will be but the guards no .
We could add the guards but we would have to use the
same annimation and that may not go down well. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Send whatever you have done so far and I'll put it in.
Thanks
