I have VI and am working on a unit mod that gives a faction something other than generic Royal Knights. I am making the Royal Palaces unique and make them able to build units like The Order of the Black Eagle for Germany, etc. to give a bit of regionality to the game. Is there a way to make sure that the units can upgrade like the Royals do?

I have seen a thread on this somewhere. Someone managed to make Viking royal units the royal units for the Danes.
I think it is in the .com forum on MTW.

To make units a royal unit all you have to do is edit the field in crusader-unitprod file which relates to if the unit is to be a royal unit for factions, and put the faction name that you want.
if you have gnomeeditor it is very simple. in my campaigns, i made LK's Housecarles the royal unit for the Danes,
its one of the easiest things to mod in the game.

Thanks for the help bt I still have the question as to wheter the new Royal unit could be made to upgrade at each era like the RK's do if I make and early, High and Late

Yes, it should be quite easy. You just make three units, instead of the one - with appropriate stat, graphics, and icons.
I've been thinking of a similar modification - with every faction having a unique knight type unit. The goal would be twofold. First, to get more knights into the game. Second, to keep thier numbers under control. I'm going to start a seperate thread on this issue.
