And I just read the post to see when the patch was coming out Even making a comment like that makes me wanna hide under the parapet in case of the incoming missiles.
For my two cents, I think that the org does fulfil a very useful function, but of course like any truely free forum the parent institution will have somewhat of a love hate relationship with it. I think that this is a good thing, as if we did not say things that riled the "boss" from time to time, then a hell of a lot less would get done.
Indeed, concerning the issue of modding, this forum has directly sold one copy of the expansion pack. I have owned it for several months now (over a year, or has it not been out that long?) and I have NEVER played the added campaign - looked rather dull, especially comapred to the reason that I did buy the expansion pack - Wes's mod. Exams are now eating my time up, but I think that the quality of the additions as well as the care and attention that goes into it for NO renumberation is breathtaking. I hope that when I have finished I can again go and do some Frog bashing.
I wonder if any people hear have played any of the Space empires games (I think we are on 4 so far) - www.malfador.com/ They include mods with copies of the game, and have bended over backwards to make sure that any aspect of the game can be uverhauled if someone wants to, not this unlocking of areas to make us fork out money for the next expansion.
But at the end of the day, they have made one of the most addictive series of games that I've ever played. True they are not perfect, but who is?
I think that engaging for too long on such topics of point scoring (regardless of how right someone is) is not productive, as I'd rather the developers were making total war http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Yes, and the games are great, although I've never played the game modded, since they sell the same game plus the mods for the full price as a "gold" edition. Oops... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/redface.gif

Only the demo - Much as I enjoyed it I am not sure it justifies the price. Gameplay is excellent, but it does look very dated...
Incidentally, does anyone remember "Starfire" the paper-based game the rules set was clearly derived from? - I think I might actually still have it at home. Came in a small plastic bag as I recall...
PS OT I know, but a change from all the bickering...

Well, it should say "of Hungary", i've checked the loc files and the text doesn't appear there, will this mistake be corrected in the VI patch?...
Well, i've corrected this "little" bug. I've changed the of_clan_districts variable (array), the entry for the golden horde is commented, and that is the reason of the wrong order of the array elements. After uncommented the golden horde entry, the text shows correctly in the marriage proposal window. I've corrected the of_clan_districts of the viking campaign too, now it shows king X of the irish, king X of the mercians instead king X of Cait, Sci, etc.

I suspect its not CA but Activision who now have the patch. Gil told us (last week) that it was weeks (rather than months away).
Therefore this implies it's been sent to Activision who must now approve it, and in theory also test it, before it's released.

This is all just absolutely incredible How long does it take to fix problems that should have never be allowed to happen in the first place? Moreover, how long does it take to make a patch that fixes so little, according to what's been announced? What's up with this company? The game was released with bugs that never should have gotten past even the most inept testing. I'd have been embarrassed enough to get something out as quick as possible which would fix these supposedly simple problems.
Frankly, who gives a damn whether they release a patch at all? Most people no longer play the game, anyway. Most who are still playing are so disappointed with the support it will cloud future decisions about purchases.
Personally, I'm so disgusted I don't even want the patch, now. Who cares? It's not like the glaring deficiencies of the game are going to be fixed to make it the best damn game ever created. The AI is still going to be so stubborn it will go down in flames rather than accept a peace initiative. The internal trade will continue to be so lacking one can't live without ships from Egypt to Sweden. Spies and Inquistors will still have no worth at all. And the Golden Horde is still going to pop up at the same time every time.
Support is opportunity gained or lost. They lost it, and me. Call it whining, I don't care. I'm past caring. I'll just play what I got and know what could have been.
OBG

09-20-2003, 18:27
OBG, do you remember the old X-Com series? I am still rather partial to them (especially apocalypse). The final game compared to what hte first review was like was just a pale shell (a good game, but lacking c. 60% of the features - if not more). Most of the depth had been removedto get the game out for the Xmas season - sod the people who play the game
I agree that MTW has some GREAT failings - all those that you listed merely for starters. I can not think of many games that have a RTS AI that is truely great 1 on 1 and to be able to balance strateigic and tactical play is unheard of. The challenge is incredably steep, and I think that it is too much for one company alone to be able to produce something that can to a deadline.
So, I hope that in RTW people have the freedom to alter the AI - I am sure that no one person will have the killer routie, but with enough people trying to alter the way that the AI behaves at least there is going to be far more scope for different approaches. I hope that the success that MTW has had with modders adding things that the game has failed to deliver will persuade RTW to be this open to alteration. I don't think that this can be anything but a good thing in the long term.
I am sorry that you have come to the end of your patience with MTW. Just promice me that if you find a game with all that you are loking for, you'll tell the rest of us here http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

it should inteligently use its army.
not chase all its army after my 1 unit of holibars.

also it better build units a lot more and a lot better.
too many peasent armies have left me wanting no part in TW until rome comes out.

My most recent experience (before MTW) about RTS games was the Close Combat series and well, the AI was *really* disappointing.
Maybe we forget that MTW is just a game. I've been playing it since June, and I still have a great interest in it. (WesW Medmod has something to do with it, but ok)
The flaws everybody is talking about are real...but imho they just mark the difference between a good game and a classic. Many games have the potential to become classics, but more often than not this potential won't be exploited...there's nothing wrong about it, we are talking about entertainment, not about "art".
The only game that left me with sore disappointment because of its huge, unexploited potential was Darklands. (anybody remember, the Microprose RPG set in XV sec. Germany)
But Darklands was almost unplayble due to a terrifying amount of bugs (corrected by a patch when it was too late and the game was already doomed to become an underdog)...
so the project that would eventually see further expansion packs like the Hussite Revolt or Vlad Basorab Tepes' Vallachia never took off.
MTW IS playable. Properly modded, it becomes pretty interesting. If the developers provided something like a construction kit to let the gamers adjust things as they d'see fit (keeping hardcoded variables to the minimum), well, it would have been a classic.
I've spent some 80 Euros to get both the game and the expansion pack, and I don't feel robbed of my money at all.
I had three months of entertaining battles, and I'm going to enjoy at least three more months of them... so CA doesn't owe me nothing. The regret about this game not being a classic should be their, not mine...but honestly I think there should be no regret at all.
After all it is a nice game, and I suppose it got good sale results. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The patch is now in the hands of Activision, and will be released once they've done their final testing sweep. I don't know when that will be, however. If I find out a release date before it actually happens then I'll post it up; until it rolls around there's nothing to do except sit tight and wait, sorry.

Thx, Gil http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Thanks GilJaysmith for the update. You guys have been great.
I recently picked up Temple of Elemental Evil, and the game is shamefully buggy. The abundance of horrible, game breaking bugs really puts our bitching about the 56 year bug into perspective. Its been over a week, and still there has been no response from atari on their community forum. Worse, it seems that Atari wont even authorize a bug to correct the piss poor coding that was shipped.
Having ranted about that, thanks again for the continued support of the game and the org. We truely appreciate it.
So it'll be out for Christmas then http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Am I the only one who thinks this will hurt sales of RTW? You can bet I'm not going to buy it until I hear about the bugs and see a patch. But that won't be a problem, because by then, there may be the patch for MTW and I'll continue to play the game I really like.
Which will come first, the patch or RTW? How incredibly sad.
Hi Old Bald Guy, You 're prolly not on your own but I doubt RTW will be effected by the issue of this Patch (at least were getting a patch).IMO RTW will out sell STW MTW by a long way. So many games released are unsupported and you get the impression that the devs and pubs couldnt care less. This is not the caes with CA.The inpression I get from CA is a growing company developing a solid game formula in the Total war series.
As I' ve said in the past, as long as the series improves or adds new features with each new release,CA have my custom and support.
OOOOOOOOO.....Someone is going to chew up Saki. Let me get a good view. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Why would Saki get chewed up? He's right, in that most everybody who enjoyed MTW will get Rome. Most likely, I will, too, after seeing what kind of bugs and support it's going to get. Perhaps I am the only one who is greatly disappointed with CA's support of Viking Invasion.

OBG the support has been dissapointing on the matter that it took to long to bring the patch not only for the viking invasion but for the oringinal medieval aswell, im preety sure it wont hurt sales for rome tw which will out sale both shogun and medieval even if takes CA over 3-5+ months to bring a patch..:p

I don't know if you saw this but at the .com forum Giljaysmith posted the readme. Giljaysmith=This is the readme:
General Fixes
-------------
- Fixed a bug where cavalry would receive a charge bonus ad infinitum under certain circumstances.
- Removed a command line cheat that would unlock the camera giving an unfair advantage on the battlefield.
Singleplayer Fixes
------------------
- Reinforcements in campaign battles now appear in the order selected in the pre-battle screen.
- Kings will no longer die of old age at exactly 56 years.
Multiplayer Fixes
-----------------
- All multiplayer players will now appear in the Medieval: Total War chat room and can talk to one another. Please note that Medieval: Total War games will not show up for Viking Invasion players and vice versa.
- The occasional crash/lockup bug when a player quits from a multiplayer game has been eradicated.

In Sicily in 1099, there were norman principalities, the peasants and the people are sicilians, but the rulers are normans...for example...Bohemund of Tarento. Maybe this is the explanation of the scottish names (norman names).

In another post Gill says, that the modded games will run correctly after the patch. The patch will only change the executable file, not the text and configuration files:
Quote (GilJaysmith @ Aug. 30 2003,06:00)The patch is only a new EXE and changes nothing about the existing folder structure or how it's used.

I always play with the Restrict Camera option turned off but without -ian the Camera is still quite restricted. With -ian you have a truly free-flowing camera. For example, you can move the camera way, way up high above the battlefield and get a an epic view of the battle. You can also change the angle more freely.

Go to your shortcut to MTW on the Start Menu and right-click. This will be bring up the context menu. From the context menu select Properties. There should be a field labelled "Target" (under the tab "Shortcut"). Click on the white box for that field. You should be able to see and scroll through with the cursor a string of characters beginning and ending with a "
Move the cursur as far to the right as it can go (i.e. immediately to the right of the right ") and then type:
SPACE BAR
-
i
a
n
so that it looks something like this:
"C:\Program Files\Total War\Medieval - Total War\Medieval_TW.exe" -ian
You might want to make sure you have Restrict Camera deselected in the in-game meny. I don't know whether it works with it selected.
It's a real pity that they're getting rid of this feature. If it's out of a concern for cheating in online battles, why not just disable it for multiplayer?
Don't worry, it is only disabled for MP. -ian will still be on in SP.

as long as we are talking about a patch, sometimes when i build a unit of men the game takes the money from my stockpile as if it built the unit, but doesn't give me the unit. i've noticed this happens when there isn't enough room for a full unit of men in the castle(or any of the stages of fortifications).
Generally, when there isn't room in the castle for a newly constructed unit, it'll pop it into a stack outside the castle. Have a quick check of any stacks in the same province.
MizuKokami
10-09-2003, 08:01
i have checked that...no other units in the province but the garrison. if i move the garrison out of the castle, it starts building the troops again. and i noticed this most when building cav.
Basileus
10-09-2003, 10:41
sometimes you can train units and they will be in the province but you cant see them so you should go to the lower left menu buttons and look for the units in the military screen on the far left of the menu..

LOS, Do you know if this has any implications for the NTW mod? I'll understand if you don't, as we don't know that much about the patch, but I was just wondering.
I'll answer for LOS.
We (the Lordz) are currently of the belief that the patch should not effect the Nap Mod in any way.
Don't take this for gospel, but I am confident that it will not.

Thanks Lord Derfel, If the problems addressed in the patch such as the 56yr bug, and the reinforcments bug and some other issues, should not directly affect any NTW files or operation of the Mod, what remains to be seen is anything else we might not be aware of that might be included in the patch, also we must take in to account the patch will most likely have to be installed over a clean copy of MTW VI 2.0...LOS

No known effect on mods; this should just be an EXE update.

No savegame formats are affected... your campaign saves and any saved custom battle configs will still work fine.
The only thing that might be affected is battle replays created by previous versions of the game; these may play out differently due to small changes in the battle logic.

From Xymph on the TotalWar.com forum: " Bad news folks: despite Gil confirming the patch was official, Activision states that it was released prematurely, and is in the process of taking it off their own download server, as well as requesting all mirrors to pull their copy.
So regrettably and reluctantly, 3D Gamers is no longer carrying the file. [:\]
I'll let everyone know as soon as we've got the *real* official patch online."

No, it was the offical patch, it was even on the .com. It's just that activision have released it accidentaly, and, deciding that sticking to a meaningless release date is more important than customer satisfaction, have decided to recall it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif
I thought they were pulling it because people were having big problems....its because of release date? I'm inclined to think that even the most not-so-smart of the not-so-smart people wouldn't do something like that. Must be a QA problem.
most likely activision sticking to a preset release date,
the only QA issue occurs if you dont have VI in windows registry
This is probably released in order for us not to take their heads and make from them drinkin' cups after they announced the release date for RTW. Smart thinkin' CA http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

This is too weird
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
Is that seriously what it is? Because of Release Date? If thats the reason.... wow I'll definitely label them the worst customer relations company of all time. Well it works fine for me, so unless I see something to the contrary...
I said probably But I'd say now most probably.

Its strange that they have said that on 3dgamers.com, even the adrenalin vault is saying the same which is odd as I downloaded the patch from both fileplanet and activision today. Phaps activision wanted some extra traffic through their website for a couple days

Hi guys,
I am 'slightly' annoyed by Activisions release 'policies' concerning the VI 2.01 patch. The way they treat the result of your hard work, and the community that should benefit from that, is a disgrace.
Let's face it. The Medieval_TW.exe is the patch. Tested, QA'd, and now Activision is handling it. They claim there are QA issues left so the one they prematurely released is not the official one.
Now UNofficially, I know that what is not up to par with their release is their attempt to make an installer for it. Whatever they will do with it, before they finally release the final one, it's not going to change the Game patch itself.
The sad result of this @#%$-up though, is that first we had a split community, with MTW and VI foyers split. Now we have a split split community, with part of the VI players on the MTW foyer, and the others in the VI foyer still.
So unofficially, and against any rules that I am not aware of, nor responsible for, I will keep the links to the patch alive. And if that makes me a bad boy, I am sure someone will officially let me know on Monday, and if so I will promise to never do it again
Have a great weekend Gil, and others, and on behalf of the community, thanks for a great patch.

Yes, I am ignoring the recall by Activision. This is too much. The download at Activision is still active. If it vanishes, it will be live on my mirror until someone strictly forbids me to host it. Which won't be before monday morning.
Download and use it.
Is it normal to have release dates for patches? I would think they would want to get the patch out asap to fix their broken software. I wish people from Activision visited these forums often so we could bash them. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
Alas I dont have much web space to host but if any members did want it i would happily Mirc it to them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Just pm me
