Hey i've been thinking it would be cool to work harder on trying to build up generals. Right now I just wait for a 6 star general to magically be born, and never focus on the lower down leaders unless thats all i got. So i wanted to ask is there any official word on what the battles won to stars earned ratio is?
I read this in an earlier post about assasins gaining stars...
Quote[/b] ]Shinano:
Rank Kills(victories for generals)
1 1
2 2
3 4
4 8
5 16
6 32
Can anyone confirm or disconfirm this?
Everything seems sound until you want to get to 4 stars, 4 more battles is a lot. And then 5 or 6 stars? Thats way too much work. Anyone know for sure if this is how its done?
Oh and you know what would be cool, if units recorded where they had fought before. Sure valour is some indication, but with valour bonuses, provinces that naturally give valour and Vice/Virtue valour modifiers its hard to tell who actually earned their badass status.
I dunno, it just occured to me when i was thinking about trying to build up a general's stats that i would also be more likely to use units that had fought in many battles. It gives the whole thing a more personal touch i think, when you have some proof that these guys have fought for you before.
I dunno, I've had my generals go from 8 to 9 stars with only about 6-7 fights for me... I don't think it's as hard as getting an assassin to rank 6.
it be sweet if you can train generals... ie like the asassin and spy on VI, the highest you can train em is 3 stars. so why not have the generals do that? say you can train generals up to 3 stars too http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif.

Granted 4 stars isn't much for some factions, which have 8 star generals pop up every few days (starts with a byz, ends with a tines http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ), but if a general fights that many battles with his army, you'll end up with high valor units and lots of good v&v's, and that's sometimes better than an 8 star general with nasty vices and inexperienced troops. As some factions, like the HRE, you basically have to build your generals that way, because they...really suck...

Yes you can train generals, as Rowan11088 said some factions rely on it. Home grown generals are also very handy for those times when you don't need your 8 star general to teleport across the map to become king and leave a pidly 2 star facing the vast, angry hordes of Egyptians you just Peed of.
The numbers in that chart sound about right, the higher ranks are hard to achieve if you don't get a training province. To get a training province you should pick a province like Scotland that rebels easily, give it a dreadless govener (or no govener), tax it to death and destroy any happiness structures (watchtowers, churches etc). When the province rebels just move your training army in on the turn you get the first warning, this means you will be fighting a defensive battle against the rebels. If you keep doing this you can build up the stars and valour quite quickly.
You can tell which units are the badasses, they wear leather jackets on the field and march around to heavy rock music http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif Or, more accurately, they are the ones with valour above 8, it is possible to get past the 9 valour displayed on the unit tab. If you pull up the F1 screen in battle you caan see troops valour, this is the only(?) way to see if a troop has gone beyong 9. Someone's currently talking about a 14 valour prince in the entrance hall, and last year someone posted screenshots of a valour 26 prince

Yeah by the time you win 8 battles to become a 4 star general im sure you have the Skilled Attacker V&V or something similar.
I hope those V&V don't add to your "base" number of stars. i.e. if you were a 3 star gen with a +1 to attack, it would still take only 8 victories to get your next star.
I bet titles do add to your base star number since you are basically gaining stars for free. Seems only fair to me.
Anywho i guess ill have to wait till next game to start building up generals seeing as how im now in the endgame of this one and all the enemy generals are too smart to send novices against.
Oh i have a 13 valour genearl but he's only 1 man. We'll see what happens once i fold him into another unit.
I used the training ground idea. Until that too became a bit mundane. I do recommend it though, Valor 11 Khwarazmians http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

With those titles that add 2 stars its pretty easy for you to get any faction general to 9 stars. Just make sure you dont lose any fights he is in
I love seeing a general in command of a valor 7 SAPs with a specialist attacker V+V. No force ever made can defeat that.
I just checked, and you only need like 6 battles or so to get a general to 4 stars... Least thats how it went for me.

Those numbers I posted are correct for Shogun...I havn't played Medieval much so I don't know how it works there. Would be nice if they had changed it so that it worked the same way as for ninja's, so that your general got more points for defeating a higher ranked general.

As best I can ascertain it works as shown in the chart. Start with a 0 star general with no battles, he wins 1 he gets a star. If he wins two more, he gets two stars.
Note that if you give them a title with 1 or 2 stars it is a free boost. Same for having a fresh general that arrives on the map with one or more stars. For instance, if I give a fresh two star royal bodyguard unit a 2 star title that makes him 4 star. First battle he wins makes him 5 star (assuming he didn't lose any in the process...) Two more wins and he had 6. More than likely he will pick up skilled attacker and skilled defender quickly and get those bonuses as well.
An important way to produce generals is building things like palaces. Once you get a province built up with palaces and other upgrades, producing elite units there like CMAA, or royal bodyguards often results in a 1 or 2 star general.

Now don't quote me...
When I want to make a star of a general I do a couple of things. I involve him in every battle he is in. His squad regenerates, no one else does. Free royal knights. Better to lose his guys that a unit you've got to rebuild. So get him involved, don't be too afraid as kings have super powers as far as hand to hand on the field goes. Most of my battles end up with him the only guy left in his unit. Sometimes on the field. Make him a hero on the field and I swear he gets stars faster.
Every battle you put him into and you want to jack him up, make the battle completely against him. Go in with like a third of the army the other fella has. And do what I said in the previous paragraph.
I swear he get's stars faster. He also get tougher and tougher.
I think only your King as a general got regenerative royal knights. Even prince couldn't. Is this true?
Annie
Well, I know as the Egyptians, my princes' ghulam units don't regenerate, so I believe you're right. Only faction leader's unit automatically "heals" itself.
Yep, only the king/sultan.
And he dissapears off the map when he turns 56.
Nope, I don't bother using a king for commanding unless I'm short of generals simply because there is no point in pumping up the stars of a general that is going to vanish all too soon.
OK, so if he's an 8 star or something already I might.
But then, I've had enough civil wars break out from getting my king cut off from his empire that I don't like to send him off on hair-braned missions...

Es true, my bad. I wasn't thinking.
But do those other things apply to rank or just V&V's?

one of the developers from CA had an explanation of the way generals obtain stars, it was probably 6 months or so ago.
I think this is it.
Generals Stars (Ranks)
Rank Net Victories
1 1
2 2
3 4
4 8
5 16
6 32
7 64
8 128
Generals supposedly start with some number of battles already won so if you start with a 4 star general, it may not take 16 wins to become 5 star, but it would take at least 49 battles won to get up to 6 star. Supposedly this is how it works.
