View Full Version : MP MapPacks.
Konnichiwa,
This pack contains 184 custom maps made by many authors.
The maps are not changed, but extra prefixes are added to the name to make it easier to select a map for MultiPlayer games.
() means that a map is custom, this groups all custom maps together in the list.
_f stands for 'flat' maps.
_h stands for hilly maps.
_c stands for castle maps.
_r stands for rivermaps.
_m stands for miscellaneous maps. These maps have special features or don't fit easily in the other 4 categories (but that's arbitrary).
The miscellanous category surely contains maps that are less suited for regular league games, but this category contains many maps. It may very well be that your new favourite map can be found here. Give it a look if you have time.
_S, M and L tells the size of a map. So (hM)_7b7p_bearlands05 is a hilly Medium sized map. 7b7p_ is the personal tag of the author.
I hope that this system will make it easier to select the right map for your games.
There's also a pack with the default maps to help you install a clean mapfolder if needed.

Both this mappack and a pack containing the original maps
can be found here (http://www.mizus.com/Files/k0rgs8gVt/Maps.shtml). The defaultpack can be of help if you need to clean the mapfolder, remember that MTW only supports some 1,000 maps at a time. To clean: just delete everything inside MTW/Battle/Maps (or better back it up) and install both packs. If will find the right path by itself or you'll have to browse to your MTW game directory. This one and the default pack will give a total of 663 maps. Volume 2 will be published soon and will contain another ~125 maps.
None of these maps are made by me, except for a couple of the 'spaceholder' maps. The previous packs contain about the same maps, but without the categorizing pre-fixes. While the content is identical, these maps are not compatible.

A big thanks Tosa for spending the time doing this. Sorry you had to go through the renaming exercise more than once, but I like the system you finally adopted. I hope this will help get custom maps used by more players.

me too, i remember some fun games on mizulands and bach'sfarmland. (those who host regularly) should start hosting custom maps more often, i know it's a hassle waiting and explaining to peeps where to go, but it would probably further the cause better than just select groups playing on custom maps. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wink2.gif
This is very much appreciated by the community I am sure...thx a lot.

Konnichiwa HighFistRW san,
It's not unlikely that I messed something up. My CD is in the other machine, so I can't check it in game right now.
I did at least 2 checks on size when preparing them:
-load game in custom 4v4 and look at the size of center deployment circle in relation to map.
-Check filesize in windows. It varies a bit as a map may have many or no models, but
small maps ~25kb
medium maps ~45kb
large maps ~65kb
Checking filesize for some hf_ maps now (those are yours, right?) most are 45 kb and there's (at least) one 70kb. The former are xM, the latter xL.
I'll check them in game and in the editor soon. Would be nasty if I messed all those nice maps of yours :(

I have mixed feelings about the new map pack. I don't like the way the map description prefix causes maps to be scattered. I'll explain....
My maps all begin with O_ this was the map editor Tag that I applied for and the idea was to group an individuals maps together. If this is now preceded by (FL) or (HM) or whatever my maps are now mixed up and hard to locate. On the other hand, I suppose some would prefer not to mix custom maps with default ones, which was the reason for putting brackets first...all custom maps are grouped. It's well over a year now since MTW came along and I still don't see many custom games, if this idea helps that situation then great. I really wouldn't want all this to be just a waste of time
......Orda
Yes I understand your feelings Orda. It was either to continue using same method that left custom maps scattered all over (only grouped like with your O) or try and make it easier for people to use/find the new maps.
At first we didnt have many maps but with nearly 300 we IMO need some kind of grouping together. That can be done with just a front tag of say MP (simple and would still leave individual tags so all ones maps are in one group) or try and group them into different categories based on type.
With all these maps no one knows what to expect from new maps (and many of them are very different) so hopefully the categories will make it easier for people to pick and know what to expect.
But its an experiment really. Trying to make it as user friendly as possible and see what the effect it.

Some people are having trouble installing the mappack. After you download MTW_VI_MP_MapPackVol1.exe, you run it, and it finds your mtw/vi game folder using a registry key. However, if you don't have this key or if you have multiple installs of mtw and vi, the installer could default to the wrong folder and the maps will then install to the wrong place. The correct folder for your game is the path shown in the properties of the shortcut you use to start the game. Right click the shortcut and look at the "Start in:" line. If the mappack installer is showing a path different from that, you can copy and paste the correct path, without the quotes, into the installer on the line indicating the install directory. Alternately, you can navigate to your main mtw/vi folder using the ... button to the right of that line, and choose the install directory that way.
Note: For players who want as clean a map folder as possible, get the OriginalVI_Maps as well from the same place, delete all the maps in your \battle\maps folder and install both the MapPackVol1 and the OriginalVI maps.
These are the links to the individual mappacks:

From my recent experience, it makes no sense to host custom maps from this mappack at this time, unless you agreed to meet with a couple of people beforehand, who also have the pack installed.
When I was on, nobody had either heard of the pack, even some well known clans, nor were willing to join. I didn't check at TWN, but it appears they should advertise a little more and all serious clans should encourage their members not only to download it, but to actually use it as well...
Unless that is done, we will continue to see the same steppe and flatinland maps as always.
We have seen that many times.
Always is hard to introduce new maps, but im sure with time ppl will get it.
I have played some games in really nice maps (even 4vs4) and we did not agree in to be there at that time. We played just with the ppl on the foyer. Well, in some case we had to wait a lot (coz swoosh pressed wrong key http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ), but again we played 4vs4.
As soon as ppl start to don't be able to join a game coz of no map we will see them dl the mappack fast.
So keep hosting new maps, even if u have to wait a bit...

Is it one of those maps that just will not load and CTD?
There were a few others in the original map pack that did this and/or caused chaos with army deployment. You could tell that the Map Designer had something in mind, however this may not have been a 4v4 or 3v3. For the game to crash I'd say there are model errors somewhere. Maps with lots of models do look very nice but models can seriously impede unit pathfinding, so houses too close together, closely clumped trees, carts etc can make your units perform crazy little manoeuvres, often walking strangely to their death http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-oops.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-yes.gif
I have seen quite a few maps where individual trees are used to form wooded areas...It's a shame we don't have the 'scrubland' texture that we had with STW, that allowed wooded areas without the density...so no hiding. When maps are discussed, I always try to emphasise simplicity. It's not for me to try and tell others what to do, but when things are kept simple you get no problems. I use models in some of my maps but these usually strategic ( make you go where you'd rather not ) or placed 'out of the way' as part of the scenery. The majority are just textures and terrain, I think you can achieve all you need for a good map with just these alone.
One small point Tosa..(mL)_O_Mizulands 12.... I'd call it flat. Did you list it as a mountain map because of the quarry hole? It certainly changes your normal game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I remember the comment made by CBR...
"Rest of the map is fine...maybe edit that hole??" http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif
It's really important that people test their maps in all formats, from 1v1 to 4v4 and make sure these non players don't arise. Buggy custom maps will be just another reason for the community to ignore the Map pack.
Btw...I lost to Jochi on Mizulands 12 last night http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I still like that big hole http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Konnichiwa,
I've played (fL)_CBAR_Great_Redoubt again in custom 4v4 today. My experience with STW maps was, that if a map works fine in custom 4v4, it will also work in MP.
That map is mostly 'steppe' with two lines of wood and some nice scenery bits. It has something which looks like a crater surrounded by stakes. The 4v4 ran fine, the stakes did not cause any problems. I've loaded the map in the mapeditor, because the camera there can reveil some potential flaws: land that's actually sea and models that are placed below land surface (a keep is put in there, terrain raised, burried and forgotten and a source of trouble).
I haven't found such things. I'm clueless why it doesn't work and I doubt that the map's responsible for the crash(es). Could be though, but it's a nice map and it should be granted a few more tries.
m is miscellanous Orda. Used for maps that are different, but also maps I failed to classify as hilly or flat. When is a hill a hill? The same gopher bump from a large map looks like a mountain in small maps. What to call a map that has both a big hill and large plains?
I agree about buggy maps, buggy maps should not be in a MP mappack. It already takes quite some time to get a game going.
Hard maps are a different story. What's annoying for one, is paradise for others.

Custom battle, (fL)_CBAR_Great_Redoubt, high era, lush, normal difficulty, spring, clear weather, 5000 florins, no time limit, fatigue on, morale on, limited ammo, human attacker = almohad, computer defender = byzantine.
Take a v0 Faris for the human and a v0 Byz lancer for the computer. Start the battle and march quickly toward the redoubt. The computer will retreat it's Byz lancer. The game will freeze shortly after your Faris crosses the map's center before reaching the redoubt as you try to move teh camera forward, and CTD about 15 seconds after that. I tested this twice with exactly the same result each time. I use the -ian switch in my shortcut.
Online [FF]Heart was hosting, and is a very solid host for 4v4. I was experiencing severe mouse lag during deploy unlike anything I've ever seen before. AMP dropped during deploy. He was right next to me, and I never saw any of his unit move. About 30 sec after that another player dropped, and I CTD'ed.
Thanks Yuuki. I'll try the setup you mentioned.

Louis,
I tried the (fL)_CBAR_Great_Redoubt map in several custom battles today, and it worked ok. I couldn't recreate the crash. It could be the crash is a hard thing to recreate. I know Toda had a lot of trouble with a map with stakes he made with obscure crashes in multiplayer. I believe he was eventually able to fix the map, but it took many test battles before he was confident the map was ok. I made a map with stakes that I've never seen crash, but I also stayed well under the maximum model limit on that map as Orda advised. The (fL)_CBAR_Great_Redoubt map is max'ed out on models. You can't place anymore models on that map.

It does get very frustrating I know. At times it seems that the players in the Lobby are not frequent visitors here. I am sure that all who visit .Org are aware of the maps. I can only encourage members of Clans who have the pack to promote them among your Clanmates. These maps offer so much to rejuvenate the game and tactics need to be adjusted a bit now that there isn't always a hill on attackers right...generally with some trees on it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
But there are those who value Steppe and its precious fairness http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif ( Is war fair? ) and others who won't install anything, map or mod http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
I have always preferred maps with features and I like historical maps too. I am currently working on a new series of maps which hopefully people will find enjoyable.
Just to re emphasize Test all maps fully before releasing them
.......Orda
Such a thing could be Yuuki. I guess that lower spec video cards will be more vulnerable there. Those stakes are deceiving, I didn't notice a load of models.
Dionysus9
01-23-2004, 18:45
The "overload" of models is a really strange beast. For example, Bachs_Gambit2 was designed using "Dark Ages Lush" as the climate. I never even thought to test it in other climates.
It works just fine on Dark Ages Lush, with no error messages. But if you use, for example, "Temperate" then it gives you the "too many models" error.
All of that being said, I've never had the map crash on me and I've played numerous 4v4's on it. Its got a ton of models on it (tombstones and wells, fences, hedges, you name it) but never had a problem with it (other than the occasional error message, but not crashes).
So who knows what causes the crash? Its just one of those mysteries of the universe.

TosaInu,
I do use an older Voodoo V3/3000 32 MB video card, and I am restricted to playing battles in 800x600 with that card since 1024x768 is likely to give "surface lost" errors and then a game freeze. My video card does meet and exceed MTW requrements, but maybe I'm likely to see problems that someone using a newer video card would not see.
Can these maps be used by the SP Campaign and come up as additional maps in the Battles. This way you can have different maps. I am starting to get real familiar with the original maps and was wondering whether this will help to add to the variety.
Konnichiwa kiwitt san,
These maps can be used in SP, but the campaign won't use them just like that. My guess is that you have to rename them to flatinlands25 and so on as flatinland24 is the last in that series. Same with flatinlandriver, flattomountaininland and other series. That should add more maps to the campaign pool. Don't skip numbers, I guess that starting at flatinlands26 will cause the game to think: 1,2..24, no 25 -> no more. Never tried it, but that's how I guess it will work.
Antalis::
01-27-2004, 13:34
Yes, if you want to use them in the SP-campaign of MTW you must rename them: How Tosa said to hillyinland01, hillyinland02..., mountaininland01, flattomountaininland01, hillyinlandriver01, and so on.
You can search for the used names in the "Maps" (Battle/Maps) folder.
There are about 18 or 19 names which are used to represent landscape-styles (without the castles).
So rename them and use for every name some maps which are right for a specific landscape (it depends how many regions are defined for a specific terrain, like for mountains) in the startpos.txt)) with numbers from 01 - ... .
Its very easy, but a hell of a work ;)
Konnichiwa Antalis:: san,
That is a possibilty that must work, but it's a proces of replacing rather than adding. Do you know whether adding works when you continue numbering where the game stops?
Antalis::
01-27-2004, 18:10
I don´t believe that there is an end of numbering: from 01- no end of the numbers, but I don´t know exactly.
I installed both packs and I'm wondering if I need to install texture packs to go with it. I tried 3 maps and all of them seemed to be lacking the hedge texture, it looked very odd. Or is this a convention of MP maps to speed up the game? Thanks so much for compiling these
Quote[/b] (TosaInu @ Jan. 27 2004,06:21)]Don't skip numbers, I guess that starting at flatinlands26 will cause the game to think: 1,2..24, no 25 -> no more. Never tried it, but that's how I guess it will work.
as far as i can tell that is how it works,
skip a number the anything beyond that gets "overlooked"
B.
Hedges are actually models not textures, and the number of models you can have on a map is limited. Most of the custom maps don't use hedges.
