View Full Version : Names.txt & Default Heroes.txt

Can anyone please explain how these 2 files interact? Default Heroes says you can assign a list of fore- & sur-names to your faction, but that each name must appear in names.txt or changes.txt. But how are those names to appear in names.txt? As in the left column "[]" or the translation column "{}"? And why are there English forenames in Default Heroes list that are not in either names.txt or changes.txt?
In MTW it was very simple; just change the names in the translation column. Now in VI, it doesn't matter what I change, it might seem to work on the vast majority of added names, but eventually I still get some "Henry...Can't Translate" type messages, and after days of trying to figure out why, I'm stumped.
I just added my own English surnames list in Default Heroes; I made it #17, and assigned that list at top of file. Run MTW, and all my generals are using the Khazar list (which is #16)
I give up... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-help.gif

Yo
I think that Famous heroes must be in names.txt not in _heroes.txt, but i have problems too. Kings must be in _heroes.txt and names.txt.
I put 1o heroes for each faction, and in game i get only first hero x 10. ??????? Where are others?

each list in either changes or names must be EXACTLY the same as the one in default_heroes.
some new hero names - such as english ones - are added in changes just on their own, notr appended to the list, they also appear appended to the list in _heroes
for the faction you're editing, find the most recent names list, either names.txt or changes.txt
add your name at the bottom
["black"] {"black"}
then add it in default_heroes as well
if the name generates errors then its not been added in names or hcnages properly. either there is a newer version or something.
english generates several problems vbecause there is no exact list in names or chnages that matches the one in heroes.
your best bet is to edit your name as the ninth on the list, below kings names in names.txt and in heroes.txt
however this will mrean that some of the original english hero names are out of sink now... so you tancred de normandy may become robin de normandy... not sure...
tell me how it goes, and maybe we can work something out...

Hero names won't be a problem because I can (and will) change them directly in the Heroes list, which will work as long as the initial problem has been ironed out: changing the default "random" names that are given to generals.
So I add them to names or changes, with both a "[]" column on left, and a "{}" translation column on right? And then do same in Heroes? I noticed the 2 lists (names.txt and default heroes.txt) aren't necessarily in the same order; to set order (like for royal names purposes), I would change the order in Default Heroes, correct?
Thanks again Black Prince.

default heroes just contains the {"text"} column, but yes

If I get it right it means that HEROES must be in names.txt and heroes.txt, right?
for example:
names.txt:
["Man1"] {"Man1"}
["Man2"] {"Man2"}
heroes.txt:
["Man1"]
["Man2"]
+ I must put them in ADD FAMOUS HEROES::
Is that right?

i think so, i've found some major disparties withnthe english ones though, and i'm now checking other factions. i've posted a new topic with severla questions relating to this issue, hoping we can all get together and resolve this.

Excellent tool you have made... or so it seems since it doesn't work with VI factions; FN_01 etc.
Is it possible to edit your tool so that VI mods can also use it?
Many thanks,

It will work with ALL factions, they FN_01 stuff is in there, but I removed it, it's all in the discourse on the ickle site.
I'm creating the tool to help us Lordz continue modding for NTW, so it's a bonus I'm letting it loose on the public.
But like I said, bare with me, it'll be done.
