twas wondering if someone could help me with the castles thing, just list them for me as i dont remember all of the order of it all,
like say,
castle1 consists of ...fort?
castle2 ...fort and motte? and so on...
castle3...fort, motte, bailey, or what not, and so on...
and what year some of them take effect, like when cannon/culverin towers are available, i was thinking 1259 or something, but its been awhile since i played a whole campaign, so i figure i am off here and there with the particulars and just working out the kinks, ya know how it is...thanx people...

You can build up your castles to have culverin towers already in early era. Castles are not restricted by gunpowder invention, which only affects the availability of a Gunsmith and a Foundry. So no period restrictions for castle artillery.

yes, thanx again eastside, i remembered one could create a castle with cannons in early, was unsure about building during the campaign though, and unsure as to which year gunpowder is discovered and used...

Really? I can't build culverin towers unless I have a cannon foundry in the same province.

Some castle upgrades indeed require Gunsmith of Foundry, sorry for misleading you Seven.the.Hun...

But one thing is odd. You can build a fortress, wich has no cannons (i believe it's castle 13) But you can't build a fully upgraded citadel(castle 12) Unless you've foundsome gunpowder

Fort
Fort + motte
Fort + motte + bailey

keep
keep + curtain wall
keep + curtain wall + ballista towers

Not to sure on castle level

castle
castle + ring wall
castle + ring wall + catapult towers

citadel
citadel + barbiecan

Fortress

All my games have been early era and I have never been able to add guns to them even at citadel or fortress level. I am playing Viking Invasion as that could make a difference.

Also just a nice little note when a castle gets downgraded due to change of ownership a fully upgraded castle (castle ringwall and catapult towers) will get downgraded to castle and ringwall. after another change of ownership it will be downgrade to a plain castle. If it should change hands again it will get degrade into a keep curtain wall and ballista towers and so on. A citadel almost never gets downgrade if it does and I never had a fortress get taken over

I found that getting a fortress meant you get demiculv towers built in and thus you could circumvent the gunpowda restriction.

I personally turned the foundry requirement off as I enjoyed facing the horde with fully upgraded fortress in khazar http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif packed with upgraded joms of course.
