When I was reading through the manual I came across the following under the vices and virtues section:

"A governor ... who is left to rot in a provincial backwater may develop a nasty personality"

Has anyone noticed this? If so, do you have any idea if it's related to distance from the capital, population, economy, etc.? I've completed the imperial campaign with the Jullii on N/N; I've had some good governors continue to be excellent managers and bad ones become worse at the far ends of my empire (though they were in rather large cities). So is this happening and I'm not noticing it or what?

I haven't noticed it happening, but if you're stuck in a place with hostle natives everywhere you would start to get a bit annoyed at the people who put you there! I don't put governers away from my capitol much for this reason, except if it's an important city (enemy capitol etc.).

It seems the further away the city is from your capital the more corrupt and disloyal a governor becomes. The best way to fight this I’ve found is to send your Governor out on token missions. Wipe out a very small army or rebel force and he calms down quite a bit. If you leave him stuck in a city he will turn sour. I usually take an army and fight towards a city. The leader of that army then becomes governor. That way it saves me from looking for enemies later on.

I've had quite a few heirs get the "Minion" vice if I have been getting victories with all generals but them. Not sure about the backwater thing though, I haven't noticed it.

I have a governor who has a "dangerously mad" vice. It changed his name to Flavius the Mad and says something about how he has a "disturbing tendency to bite people at inoportune moments." He is governing Thapsus.
