Where can (should) I build forts? Directly on a road through the mountains or should I build it to the side of that road?

Will a fort on the road hinder my movement past it?

Will a fort on the side of the road easily allow enemies to pass?

Do forts have zones of control that intercept all enemies moving through the area?

Place them on chokepoints on the map, River crossings, fords, mountain passes or just generally a narrow strip of land.

You can also place them in enemy territory which is great fun if your planning on cutting off the route of enemy reinforcements so you can besiege a settlement in peace.

I understand the chokepoint placements. My question is should the fort be directly on the road, bridgehead, ford or should it be slightly to the side of these features?

On the road, as units travel faster on roads so you'll slow down the enemy - if they choose to go around your fort.

A fort in the mountain pass to the west helped me ward off gaul's for long enough to seriously build up my julii armies before marching into the gaul lands off italian peninsula.
