I looked around the forum and couldn't find any mention of this, but I'd like to give my theory on what triggers the Marius Reforms.

I got mine around 230 B.C., the exact same year I managed to build an Imperial Palace. I was intrigued and went to a previous saved game where I had the Imperial Palace still qeued up, and used the "process_cq Carthage" cheat, and like magic, the Marius Reforms happened.

According to the Prima Strat Guide, it's when you build an Urban Barracks

From the posters on total war center, it is when you get the imperial palace.

It's definitely the Imperial Palace. I changed the starting position file so that I could begin building it in the first turn, doing nothing else whatsoever, and as soon as it completed I got the Marius Reforms.

And for that, my friends, you need a Huge City. Guess what? Last night I hit the Marius Reforms for my Scipii campaign in Capua... at 247 B.C.

CA says it is the Imperial Palace, and will happen no matter which Roman faction (except the Senate) builds one first. However, CA is working on a change for a coming patch so that the reforms won't happen so early--it will have some sort of time element to the trigger.

Time released Marius reforms? Cool!

Maybe this can lead to a whole bunch of mods of different events in campaigns appearing.

Deffo the Imperial Palace; I even get the Marian Reforms going in the Prologue around 300BC!! ~

I've done a limited trawl through the files in the data directories and it looks like it might be a hard-coded event in the executables - so we probably can't mod it to be a little more realistic.

I agree a timed reform would be great. I hardly ever get to use triarii spearmen in battle because i have hit the reforms. I know you end up getting better units with the reforms... but i'd like to at least get all my pre-marius units before i get post marius units.. just seems more real that way.

Odd. My reforms didn't occur untol the Imperial Palace was constructed. I spent those six-or-so turns dismantling my current armies. My empire was at relative peace with the others, so I wasn't all too afraid of an attack.

in my game it could be that someone else finished an imperial palace as i started mine....
