Well well well, look who's posted his FIRST USEFULL post. I knew of Beowulf and the rune-singers of Finland, but I was happy to find out that there is still one living.
So the dwarves's names are derived from mythological poems from Iceland (Edda) the elves's tongue from Finland, and the main plot of resisting temptation from Sir Gauvin (Gawain) amongst other.
This link also note the similarities between languages today and in LOtR:
Saruman: old anglo-saxon roots -> searu- or cunning, treachery.
Sauron: Linked with old norse or Icelandic origins for Uncleanness
Mordor: old english ->morthor for murder (of course)
Middle-earth: old english in poetics for the name of the earth itself and the battleground between the forces of good and evil.

In the link that you so helpfully provided they say he based the LoTR on Finnish language and lengend.

How can you make the leap from Scandinavian people to Mongolian people?

The Elves don't even look slightly Asiatic. They have blonde hair, blue eyes, they're tall and fair. They are based on WHITE PEOPLE from SCANDINAVIA.

Yes, their language is based mostly on the Finnish agglunative grammar but there are also Latin, Welsh and Greek influences.

Actually,

A VERY common misperception about elves is Blonde hair+ Blue Eyes...

If you read the Silmarillion you will find that different traints vary, depending on the group. Of the Noldor (one group of Elves... Galadriel is one such Elf), only one specific line/family has golden/blonde hair.
Amongst the more common Wood Elves and other... "dark" elves I am not sure about the ratios....

Finns are not Scandinavians though, but Finno-Ugrics, related to the Estonians, Hungarians and several obscure tribes in Central Russia along the River Volga. Not Germanic like the Swedes, Norwegians etc., but not really Asians either - and certainly not from "the Steppes of MONGOLIA". I'm actually ethnic Welsh/Swedish/English or Anglo-Saxon/Celtic/Scandiavian. I've got dark blonde/brown hair green/hazel eyes. One of my brothers has auburn hair and light hazel eyes and the third is a blue eyed light blond aryan with dark eyebrows [All characteristics of our Great Grandfathers].

So I suppose the last is the typical elf.

And since my girlfriend is Chinese but people mistake her for Japanese or Korean [Mongolian] and we do not look anything alike it would seem that the assumption that elves looking like mongolians when Tolkein bases them on Scandinavians is in the parlance of Aus; Bulldust!

Mind you I have always imagined D&D elves to be blond Eurasians...

4) Evolution is a series of dead ends as well as advances, it generally creates populations that are most suited to survival in their current environment. Having said that. More evolved individuals tend to be the latest. So the craddle in Asia makes them the least [note this is a flawed arguement by itself, it serves mearly to show that being the cradle does not make it the highest evolution of humanity].

5) The genetic variations within any group of humans is greater then the medium between any group. The vast number of differences between different groups is primarily visual superficial variants. The greatest group difference in humanity is not 'racial' but sexual. There is a far greater difference between male and female then African to Asian.

Interesting I thought there was only about 1.3 billion chinese in mainland china... so not only is there 200 million more (which is probable given exponential population growth) but the entire population is now celibate martial artists, would help the worlds over population crisis.
