I'm not much for 20th century classical music. I'm more Baroque Era to Impressionist.how old are you? i'm wondering if it's a generational thing is why i ask (i'm 27). i like most 'classical' music (i.e. euro-american art music). the classical period (mozart, haydn, cpe bach, etc) is actually my least favorite. have you heard much bartók? if you the impressionists (speaking mainly of ravel), i'd think you'd dig the chromaticism of guys like bartók. if you haven't heard them, check out the wooden prince and bluebeard's castle from your local library.

I'm 17. I have heard Bartok, but his stuff just doesn't do it. My favourite composer of all time is Handel, but recently I've been studying the music of J.S. Bach's sons...pretty good stuff there :book: Haydn is good as well, only recently got into his stuff.

I'm 17.ahh, you're but a pup. :snobby:
when you've matured, you'll come to realize the grandeur of 20th century euro-american art music. :toff:
seriously though, not that this would happen to you, but i didn't like a lot of more modern music when i was younger (early teens). actually started with classical and moved my way up, chronologically. except when i fell backward into baroque and elizabethan a few years back.. hmm... and now my fav composer of all time, usually, is prokofiev. go figure.
anyway what's up now:
nikolai rimsky-korskov - scena e canto gitano (allegretto) - 4th mvmt from "capriccio espagnol".

A.
never cared much for janáček. he strikes me as similar to rimsky-korsakov in the respect that when i listen to him, i'm always waiting for the music to achieve it's potential, and it never quite gets there for some reason (of course musically, there's little similarity). as compared to his near-contemporary czech composers, dvorak is obviously superior, and smetana's melodic sense engages me more. basically, janáček is one of those guys that is interesting and somewhat forward-looking, but not very memorable.

Lol, no worries m8 ... tongue-in-cheek techno extreme from the late 80s or so. Great samples of southern US preachers doing their thing, layered over a cacaphony of burbling synths and a driving techno beat. My favorite part is the twisted, screaming guitar that threatens apocalypse over it all. Thes guys put out a lot of extremely bizarre stuff, much of which is technically brilliant.
Surely you didn't think I was waxing religious??!! If so, shame on you. :furious3:

Whew ... need to balance that out a bit. How's this, an anthem of sorts since high school when it was fresh:
(This band needs no introduction):
Living easy, lovin' free
Season ticket on a one-way ride
Asking nothing, leave me be
Taking everything in my stride
Don't need reason, don't need rhyme
Ain't nothing I would rather do
Going down, party time
My friends are gonna be there too
I'm on the highway to hell
No stop signs, speed limit
Nobody's gonna slow me down
Like a wheel, gonna spin it
Nobody's gonna mess me round
Hey Satan, paid my dues
Playing in a rocking band
Hey Momma, look at me
I'm on my way to the promised land
I'm on the highway to hell
(Don't stop me)

Tear down the walls
Wake up the world
Ignorance is not bliss
So fed up with second best
Our time is here and now
I am the enemy
I am the antidote
Watch me closely

We will rise
Rise above
Stereotype Fools
Playing the game
Nothing unique
They all look the same
In this sea of mediocrity
I can be anything
Anything I want to be
We will rise

Waiting like a stalking butler

Murder now the path called "must we"
just before the son has come.
Jesus, won't you f***ing whistle

Why can't we not be sober?

Why can't we drink forever.
I just want to start things over.
I am just a worthless liar.
I am just an imbecile.
I will only complicate you.
Trust in me and fall as well.
I will find a center in you.
I will chew it up and leave,
I will work to elevate you
just enough to bring you down.

Arch Enemy - Silent Wars.
Another great song of their latest album.
This is killing us
Fighting the truth a losing battle
We believe in nothing
Just hatred for each other
Tragic sinister serenade
Twisted melody shatters reality
Dying hopes for a better day
Fragile dreams that break away
No more No more This pain must end
We have chosen to suffer
Believe in nothing but
Hatred is a vicious circle
Betrayal is at hand
Paralysed souls bleeding
Begging for salvation
Deeper and deeper the wounds we cut
The truth burning our flesh
Silent war to set us free
Stigmata of a tragedy
No more No more this pain must end
We have chosen to suffer
Feeling nothing - But hate
It's eating us up from the inside
Taking our feelings away

Yeah. In my CD, you can here the crowd booing during his electric set (since it was his first electric tour). Then someone cries out "Judas!", Bob says "I don't believe you, You're a liar!" to the guy, and then informs the Band to "Play f****n' loud!".

Hey Steppe, you're a Stones fan? Awesome. I've just got Sticky Fingers and Beggars' Banquet a few weeks ago, and love them both to death. When I go over the way to Liverpool on Friday, I'm planning on getting two or three albums - one will definately be Led Zep III (I have I, II, and IV), but in your opinion, what should the other be, Let it Bleed or Exile on Main Street? I've heard they're both great albums and they're both if I recall from that magical '68 - '72 period where Mick and Keith were on fire with the songwriting. Plus they both (again, if I recall) have one of my top guitar partnerships ever, Mr. Mick Taylor on lead and Mr. Keith "Best Rythmn Guitarist Ever" Richards.
Oh, and what album is Jumpin' Jack Flash on?
Big King Sanctaphrax
03-31-2005, 00:14
I'd get Let it Bleed for two reasons-
1. Gimme Shelter
2.You can't always get what you want.
That's just me though. Exile on Main Street is a lot bluesier, and I like that album too.
Jumpin' Jack Flash was only released as a single. It was recorded during the Beggar's Banquet sessions, but kept off the album.
Oh, and another thing. I'm probably teaching my Grandmother to suck eggs here, but Led Zep III is pretty folksy. Not that it's not a fantastic album-Bron-Y-Aur Stomp is one of my favourite Zeppelin songs-but you should be aware it's not all hard rock, like Led Zep II. Apart from the immigrant song, which rocks harder than almost everything. ~D

Yeah, I know it's quite folksy, but that's cool. Gah, there's also a vinyl of Physical Graffitti in the house, along with loads of old Genesis, Slade, Hendrix, Springsteen et cetera, but we have no vinyl player!
You think Let it Bleed? I love Can't Always Get What You Want. That said, it's the time of year where I have money to spend, so I may get both.

Tongues of fire on Idris flaring,
news of foe-men near declaring,
to heroic deeds of daring,
call you Harlech men
Groans of wounded peasants drying,
wails of wives and children flying,
for the distant succour crying,
call you Harlech men.
Shall the voice of wailing,
now be unavailing,
You to rouse who never yet
in battles hour were failing,
His our answer crowds down pouring
swift as winter torrents roaring,
Not in vain the voice imploring,
call on Harlech men
Loud the martial pipes are sounding
every manly heart is bounding
As our trusted chief surrounding,
march we Harlech men.
Short the sleep the foe is taking,
ere the morrows morn is breaking,
They shall have a rude awakening,
roused by Harlech men.
Mothers cease your weeping,
calm may be your sleeping,
you and yours in safety now
the Harlech men are keeping,

LOL ... Tesla! Frankie Hannon (lead guitar), Brian Wheat (bass) and I all went to high school together (Hiram Johnson High, Sacramento). Used to get stoned with them all the time during class out on Redding Avenue. When they were called Earthshaker (before they hit it big) we often played on the same bill at the Oasis Ballroom, (which no longer exists unfortunately). I'm a couple of years older than Frank, and back in the day a garage band of mine considered auditioning him (he was 15 at the time). But you know how it is: such a HUGE different in age between 15 and 17, he looked like a grinning cherub. It was ruled that he was too young, and we looked elsewhere. BIG mistake!

Me'shell NdegeOcello - Plantation Lullabies, a fabulous album. My kind of hip-hop.
(1) She's darker than a child's deepest sleep and into his mind she creeps in this world of lies and confusion she's the only thing not clouded by illusions the pain of everyday life is hidden by the blackness of our skin he searches to find peace within he finds love in the blackness of her skin (2) back to the ghetto serenaded by the violence outside the window project aristocrats gather they realize that our hearts and minds are shackled by the lies but he finds peace when he looks into her eyes see her blackness is fine the blackness of her skin the blackness of her mind (3) straight from the womb right smack dab in the middle of ... poverty, insecurity no one to save me the young black man lays his head on her young black thighs so that the child in her womb can hear the tears that the black man cries soon come on a wave of positivity the big swinger, swingin' like jazz singer travelin,' movin,' movin' steppin' in my three-quarter shell-toes, groovin' love to hear the brothers signify sisters with their head held high summertime the livin' is easy dreaming of seas of dark tranquility on the project full of speed on the project train heading for my love that's sweet like sugarcane - STEP INTO THE PROJECTS
***
From the album insert:
"There's no such thing as alternative hiphop because the only known alternative to hiphop is dead silence.
The grim little sister in the black raincoat stepped up to the mic and said, "I WANT YOU ALL TO REPEAT AFTER ME! THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS ALTERNATIVE HIPHOP. THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS ALTERNATIVE HIPHOP!"
Hiphop is the black aesthetic by-product of the American dream machine, our culture of consumption, commodification, and subliminal seduction ... where George Clinton was out to warn us about Madison Ave. urge overkill, the pimping of the pleasure principle ...
Hiphop is the first Black musical movement in history that black people pimped before the white boys got to it.
Hiphop converted raw soul into a fetishized commodity.
Hiphop has no morales, no conscience, and no ecological concern for the scavenged earth or the scavenged American minds wrecked in its pursuit of new markets.
Unlike Sigourney Weaver's nemesis Alien, hiphop is not the other man's rape fantasy of the black sex machine gone berserk.
Hiphop is James Brown's pelvis digitally grinded into technomorphine.
Hiphop is the DOPE-KNOW-LOGY, THE ONLY KNOWN ANTIDOTE FOR PRIME TIME SENSORY DEPRIVATION."
- Greg Tate, 1993.

"Big fat fannie, you made a bad boy outta me .... GET ON YOUR BIKES AND RIDE!"
Luv that song ~:). Gotta be my favorite rendition of a simple major scale in rock music ... wait, that's in BICYCLE. Oh well, I always listen to those two songs together.
In between the (excellent) Shogun clips as I write my little story for the Sword Dojo, I'm listening to Patrick O'Hearn - Ancient Dreams, his debute album, and Between Two Worlds, his second. I was flabbergasted when this awesome bassplayer, formerly with Zappa and Missing Persons, went solo and focused on digital keyboards and percussion in addition to bass. His new age flavor is probably my favorite--thoughtful, haunting, atmospheric, and very very deep. He has since released a number of excellent albums. I highly recommend him to those who enjoy New Age stuff.
One of my favorite sounds on this album (I'm a keyboardist and sound programmer so odd sounds catch my attention) is a digital sample of him striking the door of his washing machine with a mallet. Drenched in reverb, it makes a timpani sound like a bongo. Cool stuff.

That must have been a really good time. As for the age gap, yeah I remember all those years ago when I was a teenager, at 15, you thought 17 year olds were so grown up, and yes, at 17 you feel that your an adult, and 15 year olds are still but kids.
Back on topic, I am listening to Lush - Lovelife CD, song currently playing, 500, which has now just finished, and I've been here before has just came on.
