In MTW, some units wouldn't change their size, regardless of the size setting. This included general bodyguards and siege engines (and i think that in STW, it was true for the kensai).

The question is, do you think it would be necessary (or at least convenient) to do this for siege engines in Rome?? Because i just don't see any good reason 64 men are required to handle a couple of ballistas, especially when 16 can do the job perfectly well.

i think that the more men u have u should get a couple mor seige weapons.... cept that would be hard to manoeuvre

yeah, i dunno what the point of doing this was. as it is, on large and huge unit size, ballistas are pretty useless.

You can mod the number of siege weapons. So on large you can mod it for 4 and on huge possibly 8. I dont know what the max number of engines allowed is but at least this balances the price along with increased firing capabilty.

Don't drop your numbers too low, especially for Onagers. If you do, they might fire, but won't move - or at most just will be able to turn.

I know I took onager casualties and was down to 4 troops, usually I get 2 onagers per unit, but with 4 men I only had 1. What amount is required to bring a 2nd back in, I dont know as cant gradually increase troops, but if your on a front line with them and and get caught with archers b4 you can withdraw them, it helps to have some extra men in reservers, as non of my outbound territores could replace troops for siege engines, and they take forever to get back.
