Oh man, the guy who wrote the article is so right. I can´t express with words the joy of not calling myself lazy, but procrastinator, which, you have to admit sounds much more important. Which is, of course self deception. ~;) But hey, who are we do stop us from fooling ourselves?
Anyway, I´ve just realized I´m learning to use 3dsMAX and editing RTWs models to avoid writing an essay on genetic research enthics due for March 11th. Yeah, 3 weeks ago. But I have so many excuses planned...

HAHA, Im posting here instead of doing dome Cadd work I had to finish weeks ago. My boss will kill me. I don't understand the root of the problem though. What causes this? What is it that destroys people's minds like this? I'm getting frustrated.

I can always do my homework...
...Tonight.
...Later tonight.
...Tommorow morning.
...On the bus.
...Before the first bell.
...In first block.
...At lunch.
...At the beginning of class.
...By the end of class.
...This afternoon, and email it then.
...After dinner, and email it then.
...Later tonight, and email it then.
...Tommorow morning, and hand it in late.

It's the futility of the whole process. Even if you would finish all the important things you have to do today, there will only be new "important things" to do tomorrow. It never ends, so you might as well stick with the ones you have for now. At least that's how it is with me.

Thats probably why we're here, because we're procrastinating. What I find odd is that I rarely hand in assignments and I still manage to always get an A average.

Oh so true. Hmm, I have calc homework to do. Ah, I have study hall first thing, I'll do it then. And then there are those chem lab rewrites. Aren't due for a while though. And it would be a REALLY good idea to study for the Science Olympiad Nations in May. I could just print more images for astronomy. I'll do that, maybe. The pics are nice and and I need a new backround. Brilliant article.

Hehe, here's a website I just found: click! (http://www-csli.stanford.edu/~john/procrastination.html)
He says: "This is the essence of what I call structured procrastination, an amazing strategy I have discovered that converts procrastinators into effective human beings, respected and admired for all that they can accomplish and the good use they make of time. "
Unfortunately, upon reading his essay, following that strategy seems vitally important to me. :embarassed:
Maybe I'll get around to installing those blinds while I delay applying structure to my procrastination? Or maybe I'll play some Total War. That is quite useless, unfortunately.

Have your apocalypse now,
Don't leave it till later.
Have your apocalypse now.
Don't be a procrastinator!
....
So have your apocalypse now,

The more I delay it the lesss posts I'll have, and that's a good thing. Don't wanna look like I post here all day like JAG. I wish there was a girl here I could f$$$ instead of posting but unfortunatly they only come out seasonably. :balloon2:

Hmm... that's kind of a part of the problem. It's like I try to avoid doing things that strain me somehow. Like even something as simple as doing a meeting with someone I don't particularly care for. Or going somewhere where it's going to be awkward. Or just doing my homework, it seems like there's nothing in the world that can get me down to doing it. It's that fear of strain. Maybe I'm just spoiled, my parent's always let do whatever I wanted and now I'm paying for it.
I spend more time thinking of ways to either avoid doing something or thinking of 'better' ways of doing something (read avoid) than to actually do it. It's definitely far from lazyness but some might call it a form of procrastination; I call it a gift of convenience...

I find that while I put things off, it's mostly just a mental block sort of thing-for example, I'll read a book, then play guitar, then listen to music for two hours to avoid doing my homework, but once I'm acyually doing it, it doesn't bother me and I normally quite enjoy it. It's just getting started that I put off.

Yeah same here BKS.
Hard work eventually has its rewards but laziness pays off immediately
It's that fear of strain.
OK, I can dig that.
Do you find that by trying to delay or avoid the strain that the overall stress decreases or increases?
For me when I avoid something that I need to do I usually wind up more stressed out, and then find that the stress goes away once I face whatever it is I'm hiding from.
Is procrastinating helping you or is making things worse?
Do you want to accept it or change it?

I definetly want to change it. It's a horrible desease that I've had to battle all my life. My parents always spoiled me and I blame them. I can't blame myself for being spoiled now can I?
lol no. I usually blame my parents, or society, or my wife, or my cat, for my problems.
At some point in my life I realized that things pile up, and if I didn't deal with them then I would quickly get overwhelmed.
This feeling of being overwhelmed stressed me out so much that the 'fear of strain' was totally overshadowed by the sense of being out of control of my life.
At that point I started dealing with things, which I found out made me feel good, and now I either jump on $h!t right away or make a conscious decision to let it go, and to tell people that I'm not going to deal with it. It's remarkably liberating.
Good luck with this BP

I often put things off until the last minute. A year or two ago I began to wonder if I actually liked the stress and fear of last-minute work. It is a dangerous gamble that is exhilarating when it pays off, and when it doesn't, it adds more feelings of risk and stress, raising the stakes.
One of the most egregious cases of procrastination was the weekend before a test on Monday. Already sleep-deprived, I stayed up late on Saturday night, watching TV, playing video games, and staring at websites until my eyes stung. Sleep meant waking up and having to cram the next day. I stayed up late, finally turning in at 3-4 A.M. Forgetting to set my alarms to a reasonable wake-up time, I woke up at 4:00 P.M. When that happened, I immediately knew that I would have to pull an all-nighter in order to salvage my sleep cycle and get my studying done. After pulling off a caffeine-free all-nighter, I went to class late Monday afternoon and aced the test. I felt utterly invincible.
Episodes like this one tend to create favorable "war stories" in my mind, things that I can take strength from whenever I am in similar situations. They have also created a dangerous Favre-like self-image that is comfortable in putting things off until the last minute. Fear seems to be my motivator, and unfortunately, instructors these days do not use it enough.

Sometimes it is eve the most trivial things you leave for "later", absolutely stupid things that take you 10 min max but that seem utterly impossible to engage in. Take ironing, how long does it take to iron 3 shirts? 8 min. How long does it take to actually start ironing? days.
But when someone says to me, do something by some date. I already know where it stands in my list of priorities, and I can tell it isnt getting done til a month or so afterwards. Which is, as ichi said, liberating. ~D

Procrastination is my life.
Hm, i have some homework. I'll do it in an hour, once i've gone on the computer for a while. An hour has passed. I don't want to do it now, there's a program on TV, i'll do it later in bed. The program's finished and i'm in bed. But i'm so tired. I'll do it in the morning. It's the morning. I could do it, but i have to get ready for school. I'll do it on the bus. I'm on the bus, but i would rather talk to my friends. I'll do it at lunchtime, at school. It's lunchtime, but i'm so hungry. I'll go eat lunch. Oh, look, my friends are calling. Lunch is over, and i have to give in the homework. I haven't got it. I'll have it tomorrow Miss/Mrs/Mr *insert name*.
Rinse and repeat.

Apart from I tend to rely on some of my teacher's usual habits: I think "She usually takes 5 minutes to take the register at the start of lesson and doesn't usually check the homework until the end of the lesson. But more often than not, I just don't do homework and rely on excuses. A thread on excuses can also be found in the Frontroom.
e.g. I get some homework to be done by 10 days time. If I were to even think about doing the homework, I would not be thinking about it until 9 days time.
e.g. I have some homework to be completed by the end of the Easter Holidays.. (next monday, I go back to school) It is to revise for some tests which are pretty important but I know already that I won't begin revising until the day/morning before the exams, so why bother even trying to have the will power to get it out of the way? ~D
Considering that I'm similar to almost everyone who's posted in this forum, I think everyone is a procrastinator. Just some people more than others.
