head to the Shetlands first, there are places called Twat up there.
Moderators please note: Twat is a place name in this instance, not a swearword.

"We will not stand for the F---ing signs being removed," the officer told the broadsheet.
"It may be very amusing for you British, but F---ing is simply F---ing to us. What is this big F---ing joke?
"Just this morning I had to tell an English lady who stopped by that there were no F---ing postcards."
Thats hilarious! ~D Imagine a big fat Austrian Policeman saying this in a highly agitated voice! LMAO!!! ~D
~
Apparently it gets better. From snopes.com...
The second sign carries the hilarity even further: "Bitte — nicht so schnell!" is German for "Please — not so fast!" (Evidently this type of sign is a commonplace reminder in those parts for drivers to keep their speed down to protect children, but the unintended double meaning in this case is particularly amusing.) This sign is posted under the sign bearing the town name- they have a photo on the site.
Here's the sign itself:

Ive been there. It was funny for the first 5 minutes. ~
Hmmm, accorcing to this site (http://home.comcast.net/~mitchell.waters/blog/C2115040507/E1222031186/) there are many more wonderfull places with such.... names across Europe. France has Pussy, Romania has Clit, and I know myself that in the Netherlands you can find Rectum. I was already aware that there are quite a lot of places with strange names (for me, Wales still comes at number one), but most aren't that amusing in their own language (although in Holland you also have two places called Boerenhol and Boerengat, which both means something like "Small farmers' village", but also it means "Farmers' asshole")
Btw, I beforehand excuse myself for the obscene words in this post, it's all in good fun. ~

Good fun or not - I expect people to respect the forum rules and refrain from posting a collection of obscenities.
The first post was OK - should this topic degrade completely into frat party humour it will be closed.
@Brutus: I edited your post
I already imagined it would be too much, but I hoped it would be okay (where I come from, this wouldn't have been much of a problem, but I agree one has to obey the rules...which I'll have to read again). I however understand this be over the line and I apologize again. Anyway, most of the placenames never were meant to be obscene anyway... they all have perfectly good etymological origins that only became fun recently. As the site about F***ing said, the names dates back to 1070, and I doubt the locals were by then already chuckling about the reaction of English people. I actually remember someone telling me that he once followed a class about Medieval France (in English) and that some Americans also following it couldn't stop laughing about the place-name Nancy... but in French it's a perfectly reasonable word.

My German is pretty bad, but does the sign underneath say "Please - not so fast"????

Somebody made a thread about this several months ago. Yet somehow, the novelty hasn't worn off...

Yes it is, although at this point (I've visited the thread a couple of times) it has lost most of its novelty, time to withdraw to return again in 4 months! :charge:

Isn't it a perfectly normal name, like Nancy Reagan?

I believe it refers to something like "gay" or "efeminate" or something like that... (there also was a joke about it in 'Allo 'Allo, when Rene tells Lieutenant Gruber that he and his brother were both "Nancy boys") But I wasn't there, so I couldn't point out the exact reason for the hilarity.

Gotta love it, i have a thread that never spells out F-U-C-K and had an actual dialog, it gets closed and this thread has a sign that says "FUCK" on it and no problem. F##k it i guess...

Some comments on this:
a) I kept this thread open - although it was borderline as it started as a good fun thread about a town that happened to have a name that was equivalent to an obscenity in another language. Actually closing this thread would have meant that I recognized that the town's name is an obscenity (which it is not)
b) Posts that clearly crossed the line were edited
c) After my interference the thread basically died down and slipped down the page until someone decided to bump it again just to make a point (and to demonstrate the urge and capabilities to use profanities)
As this thread basically has outlived is purpose and is now used as a vehicle to grind an axe, I will close it now - though I have to say that I am slightly dissappointed by the way it came to this
