So is it possible to add new specialized units to the game?

I just read an message about the Housekarls (?)-specialized vikiings fighting for the English in the early period. So is it possible to add a new unit to the game without replacing old ones?

there are often plenty of weapons and shields in any given bif file,
by mix and match we can make "new" units, using existing animation sets and mixing weapons and shields.

we are hoping for the patch to introduce the capability of adding new bif file sets!
(hoping...)

Wow!! That is great!

So has anyone done the housekarls? If not, I may try putting one together today.

Has anyone put together a quick and easy guide yet on creating new units?

Lord Krazy and Barocca, what are some of the interesting units you have created so far?

I was looking through the texture/men files. Guess what! The housecarl is already in the peasant file...

I did a test unit today and was able to get the unit into battle.

I had to add files in the following places to create my "test" unit.

I. Textures/Men folder
---in the peasant file, I copied the spearman .w and .s files and renamed as test.
So I have a "test" unit with the weapon 6 and shield 3 characteristics of the spearman. I changed the shield to the 1 shield from 3 but keep the spear.
---in the items file/shield folder, I added a "test" folder in the shield 1 folder and copied the six actions contents from the feudal sergeant into the test folder.
---in the items file/weapon folder, I added a "test" folder in the weapons 6 folder and copied the six actions contents again from the fuedal sergeants into the test folder
---then in the actionspage folder, I added a "test" folder and copied the contents from the spearman folder.

II. Then in the crusaderunitprod txt file, I copied and inserted the stats from the spearman unit as my new "test" unit. I changed the unit name from spearman to "test".

III. Finally in the Campmap/reviewpanel/units folder, I copied a bif of woodsmen and retitled as "test".

After doing all of the above, I started a campaign game. I was able to build the "test" unit from a fort. The "test" unit was armed with a shield and spear. I was able to have the unit show up in battle and fight. So the process does work.

However, I copied the bif in campmap/reviewpanel/units of a woodsman unit. Will the game create a bif or do I have to create a bif using a paint program?

Also the bif of the woodsman showed up in the strategic game. When in the tactical battle mode, the picture fo the woodsman in the small unit blocks along the bottom of the screen was blacked out. Apparantly there is another small bif somewhere that is used in the battle map.

Looks like I can get everything done except the bifs. Are they automatically generated?
I hope so...I can't paint with a paint program to save my life....

for the tactical display you need an lbm file, these can be edited using grafx, and possibly ultimate paint - i have not tested ultimate paint,
the lbm's are in \Medieval\Battle\UnitIcons

additional lbm files made by LK, LBA and myself are in the demo mods downlaod area,
unit icon packs http://www.totalwar.org/MTWFiles/Demo_Enhance.shtml

new bif files or folders for the \Medieval\Textures\Men\.. are not enabled at this point in time, this is why mix and match will work

hopefully the patch will allow.

Warrior,
send me your files, I'll
correct them and show you where you went
wrong and then you can go on a unit making frenzy ok.
or download mine to see what files you
need at least .
