View Full Version : The siege tower bug - how big a problem is it?

I just had the most frustrating experience of my RTW playing career, as two units of Comitatenses milled around aimlessly at the bottom of a siege tower for over 15 minutes before one made it to the top and the other gave up, leaving both units exhausted. I lost the battle as a result. ~

Is it yet certain what triggers this? I've defended sieges where the AI used the towers without problems. At the moment I'm relying purely on sap points for siege assaults fought on the battle map, but it sucks not having an easy way to get my men up onto the walls to seize the towers and gatehouse. So does anyone know if there is anything I can do to predict whether the bug is going to occur, or whether there are any workarounds?

I really hope CA recognise the problem and patch it, because it's a serious bug. And it's not a model, texture or text file problem that modders can fix, it seems like a pathfinding issue. With 1.5/1.6, the game is sooooooo nearly of finished product quality and this is just marring it.

I find that hitting backspace (telling the unit to stop), then clicking on the top of the wall will make the soldiers enter the tower. Do this repeatedly until all the soldiers are no longer milling about at the base of the tower.

Also, I think it's only large siege towers attacking large stone walls that have the problem. Conceivably modding out them will remove the problem for both you and the AI.

This is what I see too. It happened when I couldn't build ladders, but not when I could.

That's interesting. I actually tried the same siege assault again in order to try the backspace trick, and this time my men actually managed to get up there of their own accord.

Yes, this seems to be where the problem lies. On large stone walls they seem to get stuck. But on normal stone walls it seems to work well. I captured two towns as the ERE with large walls, and both times several of the units got stuck, and I had to stop and start them over and over again, while it worked fine when I later captured three towns with normal stone walls.
