Yeah you're right about the desert, they seem to crawl rather than walk across, and takes them ages to do so. They do seem to be slower moving on snow and across water (shallows), which does look a bit more realsitic I suppose. Perhaps you could adjust the desert to how it originally was (or slightly less, EG 0.9).

Have you tried a heavily forested map yet? There are a few to choose from in the custom battles menu. Also swamps and maps with dirt roads / paved roads if you have the time.

Thanks.
ok i will test the desert. but i already tested paved roads, they move quite fast on it. so can mod historical batles so we can play both sides? and here's (http://forums.rometotalrealism.org/index.php?showtopic=5650) a mod that adds many music too RTW. even music from movies and PC games such as:
Troy

Gladiator

Pirates of the Carribean

Passion of the Christ

King Arthur (2004)

The Last of the Mohicans

The Last Samurai

The 13th Warrior

Hero

Morrowind (PC)

Stronghold (PC)

Prince of Persia (PC)
i downloaded and you should implement this to RTG. you wont regret it. i didnt!:2thumbsup: btw the download is 148 MB and the hosting sites doesnt allow download managers so for Dial-Up Guys like me it would take us 7-8 hours. so add to RTGV0.3 extras.txt and just add the address there. (so the download wouldnt be so big for Dial-Up guys)the team is pretty inactive there as they are working on the expansion (next music mid) or not doing anything at all. so you should e-mail them or PM them ocasionaly they are active. btw i downloaded it before i slept so it was done when i awoke. hehehe.

Just scan-read a few of the early posts in that music topic, and it seems that it would be frowned upon to use the music mod in modding projects - post #13 and #14 for reference.

As you say Spartan, new music would be good, but for people on slower connections such as yourself, the next version of the mod would take forever to download. Since I've been overhauling graphics, this usually bumps up total filesize, and I haven't even started on the unit sprites yet.

Hopefully though when I ZIP the download up, it'll save some space. I'm also gonna have to watch filesize because sites such as Rapidshare only permit downloads of 100MB - at least MEGAUPLOAD allows 250MB.

Yeah, I'll have a look into the historical battles and see what can be done ~D

Btw, Angel has released a sub-mod of RTG over at the RTG Subforums (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=118), I haven't had chance to look into this yet.

The frontpage has been extensively updated. This has needed doing for some time, and I've attempted to organise the page so that its much more clearer and compact than the vast amount of information that was displayed before ~D

Thanks.

Why dont you just do this? So it would just be optional and that way the download wont be huge:2thumbsup:

Im terribly sorry i dont have any testing news today (was quite busy)

BUT..dont worry i should be done tommorow!

p.s dont forget to also add an upgrade patch for the next RTG Version (so people dont have to download too much) and I have a name for those sword hoplites: foot companions. source here (http://homepage.mac.com/abradbury/xgmread/xgmreadme.html#hypaspists) i suggest reading it as one: it explains why and two: it can give you a good unit description.

Splitting the download up may be a bit tricky, as you need to include every single modified file at least once, as well as ensuring that nothing is overwritten when installed in seperate downloads. Once the total filesize is known, then I'll have a think about which areas could be released as seperate downloads - the campaign map has already been done.

Just to let you know, I've removed those vanilla BI mercenaries, mainly for 2 reasons: (1) they look out of place, (2) need more room in DMB ~D

The new mercenary recruitment pools have been tweaked to adjust for this, basically the existing mercenaries have been used to 'fill in' the gaps left by the BI mercs that were removed.

testing news. many places has been modifed under 1.0 (descr_battle_movment_map_modifiers)
so if any thing is under 0.8 that terrain will be slow to move on. here are terrains under 0.8:
sand 0.75
rock 0.7
forest_dense 0.6
swamp 0.5
water 0.6
ice 0.5
snow 0.75
anything under 0.7 crawls.

terrains 0.8 and higher:
grass_short 1.2
grass_long 0.9
scrub_dense 0.8
mud 0.8
mud_road 1.25
stone_road 1.5
0.8 is kinda slow
0.9 is pretty slow
1.0 is normal
anything higher than 1.0 is fast

After having a dig through some of the bits and pieces that shipped with vanilla RTW (not for the first time ~D), I've decided to replace the vanilla spies with some unused models and textures. Obviously some look better than others, but there are some good models and skins in there, such as the Greek ones with the plume. I've also finally found the perfect use for those Arcanii models, here's a few screens to illustrate:

Julii Spy
https://img143.imageshack.us/img143/3365/juliispy19cd.jpg

Brutii Spy

Britannic Spy

Armenian Spy

Carthaginian Spy

Greek Spy

https://img86.imageshack.us/img86/9880/grespy26yn.jpg

Dacian Spy
https://img58.imageshack.us/img58/1448/dacspy10bs.jpg

Scythian Spy

Thracian Spy

https://img58.imageshack.us/img58/7971/thrspy20pz.jpg

Numidian Spy
https://img154.imageshack.us/img154/8797/numspy15eu.jpg

It looks as though the German and Gallic models and skins were done the wrong way round by the creators, I'll switch these so that they have a closer match to their faction colours.

There's a slight glitch in some of the models. Bascially when kneeling down (or when the spy is moving), certain models' capes become partially obscured by the actual model, but I'm not that bothered - at least they're better than the vanilla 'clones'.

These models may have been intended as lesser generals judging by their equipment and clothing.

It would be good to replace the diplomat and assassin models as well, but the animations of these 2 models means that only the originals look realistic. EG, the diplomat animation of offering a negotiation, and the assassin animations of murdering and sabotage. From the 3 animations, the spy is the easiest to replace, and the weapons used on the unused models fit with the animations properly.

i found away to play both sides on a historical battle. all you do is go to
data/world/maps/battle/custom choose a historical battle go to descr_battle under nonplayable put that faction under playble. DONT erase the nonplayble or the battle wont be playble. so it should look like this:

battle BATTLE_OF_ASCULUM
playable
romans_senate
seleucid
end
nonplayable

end

start_date -279 summer
end_date -279 summer
some battles are not meant to play the other faction such as Teoutoburg or Cynocephelae (in Cynocephelae the Roman AI doesnt start) other times the AI will do something stupid (in Asculum the Romans ran to the woods) you can change that by going to descr_battle scroll down until you see this:

>>>> start of battle section <<<<

battle 111, 65
variable_weather_and_time ( day_time 12.00, year_day 0, duration 24.00, weather_seed 0 )

home_faction seleucid
alliance romans_senate, defending
alliance seleucid, attacking
now all you is change defending to attacking and they will atack you as well.
battles that are playble on both factions:
Aculum (edit the descr_battle change defending to attacking)
The Siege Of Sparta (dont edit the defending to attacking)
Raphia (edit the descr_battle change defending to attacking)
Trebia (yes i said Trebia! dont edit the defening to attacking)
Trasimene (havent tested it yet but it should work. dont edit the defening to attacking)
Gergovia (dont edit the defending to attacking)

i also found a way to change seasons in Historical Battles: today were featuring Teuotoburg forest. all you do is go to Data/World/Maps/Battle/Custom look for the Teuotoburg folder and first go to descr_battle. here's what you should look at:

; Custom battle script generated by Romans Battle Editor

battle TEUTOBURGERWALD
playable
romans_julii
end
nonplayable
germans
end

start_date 9 summer
end_date 9 summer
now here all you do is change summer to winter.
now go to descr_locations type winter on top of it. it should look like this when you're done:

winter
-560.204_-687.763
i dont know if you have to this but do it anyway
now if youre wondering if playing in the winter will be harder, it wont because i tested it and it seems the barbarians arent getting any bonuses which is good because all we want to do is make this battle at winter not make it harder.
and that's all! i will post scrennies later.

Just found this source (not sure of its accuracy), which suggests that the battle was fought in the Summer period:

Battle Of Lake Trasimene (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_lake_Trasimene)

Thanks for your generous offer Murfios! Well when the latest version reaches the testing stage, I would be glad of some beta-testers to playtest the latest version. Basically, when beta-testing you'd be looking for probable bugs, CTDs, errors, or anything that doesn't seem 'normal' or how its should be perceived. Of course, there are many areas that require testing, such as the campaign map, individual units in melee, whole armies in melee, etc.

Thanks :medievalcheers:

btw, do you use 3dsMax to mod?

Seasoned Alcoholic
06-27-2006, 09:44
I wish ~D 3DS Max costs hundreds of (insert currency here). There are several text files that are linked together that reflect how units not only appear, but also behave on the battlefield. There's a really good illustration of how these files fit together in ER's beginners tutorial on adding new units, here's the link:

Tutorial: Adding new units for beginners (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=51750)

Looking at that diagram, I've still got plenty to do. I'm still adding new models and textures, and this always takes time if you do it manually, rather than copy and paste straight from the download documentation. The unit sprites need overhauling, since the vanilla ones now look out of place. Also, I need to think about rebuilding certain factions' recruitment rosters in EDB (export_descr_buildings).

Then there are side issues, such as writing unit descriptions - copy and pasting existing entries, and tweaking names and descriptions is probably the most efficient way. Also UI cards, but I'm not bothered if UI cards are out date because I'm not a very graphical / artistic person ~D

There are further issues, such as AORs / ZORs to restrict recruitment in the rosters.

It really depends on how deep you want to go.

Is that the trial version? I know about a free trial version you can use for a month, but by the time you've learnt the basics, the trial will be almost up. I've never modelled or skinned before, so this would take some time to learn before anything decent could be produced.

However, if its a genuine, legal, free version I think many would be interested ~D

I've had a look at that bug with the siege equipment crews and the captains' jittering animations (all the way very slowly to the foot of the walls). At first, I thought it had something to do with the Roman AI crews (ballista, scorpion, repeating ballista) and their damage rating to buildings.

However, after testing out other cultures ballista crews (Greeks, Barbarians), I've discovered that it is the actual captain model that is the problem. The Greeks and Barbs all use standard bearers, and they stand motionless and do not move very slowly towards the walls. The Romans use Centurions, and we all know what they do ~D

Therefore, I've replaced all Roman crews' Centurions with Standard Bearers. I've tested this out, and it looks to have solved the bug. However, the Roman onager & heavy onager crews use Centurions, and they do not move very slowly towards the walls. This is the puzzling part, but I've just replaced them as well to be on the safe side.

Well, I was actually not taliking about the trial. You can get the full version free
from various places. However, since the its just a shared version, making profit of it is ilegal, but using it for your own personal hobbys it is legal.
You can downloaded from a torrent or EMule or Ares. Make sure to forward the port.

BI's victory conditions have been improved in the latest version of RTG. They require a player to take a greater number of regions than in previous versions. In addition, the player must now hold a greater number of key regions in order to complete the victory conditions.

very nice! btw, have you ever thought of a united roman map or mundus map?

Tbh, I've never really thought about implementing another map, such as MM, into the mod. I did think about rebuilding the map from scratch a while back, but there is a lot of work involved in putting the map together in the various TGA, HGT etc files.

In the mod's early stages, I was working heavily on the modified campaign map. It was a time-consuming task, and required a fair bit of testing to iron-out bugs & CTD issues that were generated as the map was edited in more and more depth.

On more than one occassion in the past, there were so many 'linked' bugs (IE, in more than one text file) associated with the campaign map that I had to reinstall vanilla and piece back in my own modified files to work out what was causing the problem(s).

In a way, even though it was frustrating at the time, the volume of hard CTDs, loading screen CTDs, KTMs etc makes you more prepared whenever the next CTD appears. You know its probably never going to be as complex as what's been solved in past experiences, such as modding the campaign map as described above.

Perhaps after the next release Spartan, would you consider implementing an alternate map into a mini-mod / sub-mod etc of RTG? Obviously you'd need to gain permission from the campaign map developer(s) if you decided to go ahead with this. I don't think it'd be that difficult to implement another map, especially if the download includes all of the related map text files that are needed to get it working.

What do you think?

The Spartan (Returns)

i would like to make mini-maps for RTG, but i dont know how. perhaps i can learn?.... errr.. i mean giving factions provinces and perhaps using scripts. id like to make a map on special events, Punic War, maybe a Trimuvate (Caesar, Pompei, Crassus) Spartacus, Roman Civil War etc. id really like to that.

BDH's map creation tutorial looks interesting, although I've never got round to creating a new map myself as mentioned earlier. Here's the link:

How I make my maps.~ (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=57828)

Btw, when you were testing the battlefield movement modifiers, did your tests reveal any recommended settings? I've made some changes to the extract posted a while back, this is what it looks like:

grass_short 1.0
grass_long 0.9
sand 0.9
rock 0.8
forest_dense 0.9
scrub_dense 0.8
swamp 0.7
mud 0.8
mud_road 1.1
stone_road 1.2
water 0.7
ice 0.7
snow 0.8

I've tested several of these out using Quick Battles. Would you recommend any further adjustments from your test results?

I think the campaign map is good now, anything higher would mean an increased chance of random CTDs.

Thanks.

I've just been tweaking the historical battles again, in particular multiplayer battles. In most cases, I've updated the stats in the multiplayer battles to look like the single player ones. Probably the most important feature that has been changed is the duration of the historical battles, which has been removed on multiplayer. I may do the same to the standard historical battles, except for ones such as Teutoburg Forests for example, as time is necessary here.

I'll also consider the suggestions put forward by The Spartan in earlier posts, such as making both factions playabale in single player, as well as tweaking the weather effects.

The historical battles will be updated again after the EDU has been recoded; this way I could easily add in alternate units to the ones that exist, dependent upon how the EDU is to be coded.

Not sure how many of you play online multiplayer, but if you want to play online against someone, you'll both need to have exactly the same files installed for the multiplayer battle to take place correctly.

Hey SA can you remove the red little triangles that appeare when selectin a unit? It could be a nice detail.

Seasoned Alcoholic
07-06-2006, 09:17
You can turn those green selection triangles off in the preferences text file, which is located at C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\preferences.

Open the text file, maximise it if necessary, and scroll down to DISABLE_ARROW_MARKERS. Change this property to TRUE, save and close the text file, and this should remove those green arrow selection markers when a unit is clicked upon the battlefield.

Its no problem whatsoever, I've since updated that text file anyway ~D

Here's the latest version:

grass_short 1.0
grass_long 0.9
sand 0.9
rock 0.9
forest_dense 0.8
scrub_dense 0.9
swamp 0.7
mud 0.9

The values are closer to vanilla's, because there seems to be significant changes even if you make minor tweaks. Please test them out when you have the time, and let me know what you think

Many of the existing vanilla units from RTW have now been overhauled with alternate models and / or reskins by various TW community artists. Here is a list to illustrate which artwork is featured by each author:
Professor Spatula (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=46614): includes extensive Dacian overhaul, selected Greek, Numidian, Gaul, German, Iberian, Carthaginian, Macedonian, Thracian, Roman, Mercenary and selected Mount (all reskins); Greek hoplite sword (model); Numidian standard bearer.
Pinarius (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=53792): includes complete Mount overhaul (reskins and models).
GODzilla & Pinarius (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=52786): includes complete Roman overhaul (reskins and models).

KALI (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=54346): includes extensive Parthian overhaul (reskins).
webbird: features webbird's Gauls, Britons, Germans, Macedonians, Greek-Cities, Seleucids, Thracians, Ptolemaics and Mercenary (reskins and models); also featuring elements of maximusminimus' Carthaginian & Iberian reskins, and Warspite's Eastern reskins, as well as webbird's own work with these skins. This will be updated as necessary.

Its webbird's pylos model, so they feature the cloak, but also have similar helmet designs to the one in your URL avatar ~D At least now I have an excuse to give them decent defensive armour stats. I would say leather armour rather than metal armour, as it was in vanilla - what do you think?

Don't worry about the delay in test results, I've still got plenty to do before the next release. Currently seeing how many units I can cram into the DMB and EDU files before stepping over the hardcoded limits.

[EDIT:]Just remade that sig to improve light enhancement, I've replaced it in the post above.

Reconstructed Faction Rosters

This is what I've been working on over the past few days. I'm still working on this, and have basically restructured the vanilla recruitment rosters for most factions around the Marius Reforms event.

Faction previews will follow in the near future; this will probably be an ongoing area and subject to change, dependent upon how I believe the rosters can be improved to help the gameplay aspect.

Thanks.

Sorry if my replies are slow today. The reason for this is my internet connection is lagging big-time, even though I'm on 2MB broadband...the joys of being on a network ~D

I'm also putting together new faction previews, which as you know includes taking screenshots, editing and filehosting them, creating the topics etc etc, all of which is time consuming.

Those Dacian reskins and models were made by a couple of authors, Professor Spatula & webbird. The Prof's work mainly includes the darker brownish reskins of the PM units, although also featured is his AM Chosen Swordsmen & General's Bodyguards reskins. webbird's work (think this was influenced by Burebista) is mainly the AM units and models, such as the longshield Chosen Swordsmen.

The horse mount models and skins were complied by Pinarius, and there is now a wider variety of horse skins depending upon the type of horse used for the unit.

why dont you put the review in the mod discussion thread? you can follow Hegemonia City States previews as examples! btw generals are renamed right? (like Strategos Royal Bodyguard)

Do you mean one giant discussion topic for all the factions, or individual discussion topics per faction? Personally, I feel that multiple faction topics would be a bit of :spammer:

Don't worry about the unit names, I've used those ones as placeholders. Also, not all of the latest units have been given names & descriptions yet, so I'd rather not make them up ~D

The Marius reform works for other than the Roman factions as well? I mean, playing a non-Roman faction I don´t even get the reform message (which makes sense, actually, I bet few realized the import of the reform until it was too late and the Mulus Marius stood at their doorstep ;) )

Well I'm sure they should work for non-Roman factions. The Romans were so overly concentrated on by the developers in vanilla that the other factions were somewhat neglected. This is reflected in areas such as unit rosters, stats etc.

I'm sure you can copy and paste existing event pics / descriptions into other cultures UI folders / text files, and this should force the game to display this information when the Reforms occur.

why not a one giant discussion for all factions! wheres the am nubian spearman? l love the am desert axemen!

Thanks. I've binned the AM Nubian Spearmen to force the AI to build better quality heavy infantry rather than the light peasantry with poorer stats. Hopefully this will allow for more concentrated army stacks, and will provide greater challenges.

Did you also notice the ommitted chariots? Hopefully this should remove the AI auto-calc bonuses chariot units get on the strat map.

[EDIT:]Btw, update your sig with the new one I made a few posts back ~D

keep up the good work! btw how was tweaking general bodygaurds too be strong? hopefully pain less!

Haven't tweaked them yet ~;p

I'm actually thinking about reducing the number of cavalry contained in a generals bodyguard, because the size of faction leaders and heirs bodyguards is at present pretty much the same as a powerful cavalry unit.

I can always adjust stats to compensate for a reduction in bodyguard numbers though.

Btw, I've completed the vast majority of the new unit sprites. However, the total size of the sprites folder is the same as the whole of RTG Open Beta v0.2. I'll probably break the next release down into smaller downloads so that dial-up users can also download the mod.

(all of RTG V03)

Well RTG Open Beta v0.2 was around 85MB, so that gives you some idea how much space the new sprites take up by themselves ~D All the ones that have been made so far have been converted to DDS format, which reduces the total filesize considerably.

As for the total filesize, well that's anyone's guess ~D New units and all their related bits and pieces tend to eat-up filesize a lot. I'm not sure about the version number either, because of the depth of the changes that have been made over v0.2. Its hard to quantify how close the mod is to a 'complete' mod ~D

More good news: I'm currently binning all the chariots from the game. This will free-up model entries in DMB, but should also prevent the auto-calc bias the AI receives when using chariots on the campaign map.

perhaps i can still download RTGV3. if its at the most 170 mb.

Awesome. I still do wonder, can the Marius Reform affect other than Roman factions? I mean, have you actually tested that? Because as far as I know, until 1.3 it was the Marius reform that triggered the switch of the early to the late bodyguards for all factions, but I think in 1.3 and 1.5 the first Imperial Palace built by the respective faction triggers that. Though I wonder how the Barbarian factions level up in that case...

Areas such as sprites can always be seperated from the main download. Perhaps if several smaller downloads were made available, and installed seperately (some could be copy and paste, especially if its just one folder per download), this would make it easier for those with slower connections. Although it would mean more downloads, at least there would not be one large, and perhaps unreliable (depending upon filehoster) download.

No, I haven't yet tested the transition of Marian Reforms on other factions, so there is an element of risk involved. If I'd had the time to play through a campaign until the first imperial palace was constructed, I would've done so, but I've been busy with other areas.

I don't believe the Marian Reforms only affects the Romans though. If you look at how things are coded in EDB, you can see that the bodyguard upgrade triggers are coded into specific core buildings, dependent upon culture type.

Also, the vanilla Roman unit entries use and not marian_reforms (Pre-Marius units), as well as and marian_reforms (After-Marian units). As mentioned in a previous post, I think the reason other cultures (non-Roman) don't receive notification of the Marian Reforms event is because they don't have the eventpics in their UI folders. I've since added these for the other cultures, so hopefully this should display the message once it occurs.

I know that the Marian Reforms are triggered to occur once the first imperial palace is built in a region that contains the Italy hidden resource. I'm tempted to take a shortcut to see if the reforms work properly. I may have a look into this shortcut using a variety of different factions, even though my EDB unit lists are still incomplete ~D

why dont you try making reforms at a certain date? imo reforms are too early and i dont get to use Triarii.

Right, I've just used the shortcut method to force the Marius Reforms event (playing as the Julii), basically by constructing an imperial palace. When the palace was completed, the Marius Reforms event occurred. The faction rosters for the Julii were updated, as usual. Now for the twist.

After using a combination of ER's Beginners Guide to Scripting, Myrddraal's More than 2 turns per year topic, and player1's faction switcher script, I managed to switch between factions to see if other faction rosters had been updated. Sure enough, the faction's I checked had updated correctly, so that's great news :2thumbsup:

I'd like to thank Ciaran for getting me to think about testing this area out, as well as advising on the possibilities of the faction switch ability, and details of the Marian Reforms. Also thanks to ER, Myrddraal & player1 for enabling me to test out if the Marian Reforms had updated other faction rosters.

Hmm, I could just make Town Watch recruitable for the Roman factions after the Marian Reforms have occurred. This way, they could recruit Hastati @ Barracks, Princepes @ Militia Barracks and Triarii @ City Barracks. This may make the Romans overpowered though, unless the Triarii were made available from the City Barracks at the same time as Principes.

Which recruitment method do you think would work best?

Which recruitment method do you think would work best? i think thats good! actually in many mods triarri can be recruited earlier in dosent make the romans any stronger. (actually its the games harder because everone has two hitpoints. a unit of a millitia hoplite and two peasents beat my two millitia hoplites)

I haven't done much research (apart from the faction switch script) into scripting tbh. It does take time to learn new areas, and if I stop working on the mod to learn more areas, it'll just put the release date further and further back. Fair enough if there was a team working on a project, such as in EB / RTR as you say, then each team member could specialise and concentrate on specific areas.

last minute requests: change Naked Fantics name to Gaesetae (sorry if mispelled) after RTG V03: make Early Legionary Cohort the only infantry Romans (but you can still recruit auxillia and town watch) can recruit unitil a new reform called Augustus Reforms at 46 BC. (then Legionary Cohort will replace Early Legionary Cohort and you can recruit Praetorians) this would be good so Romans wont be strong. (and a bit more historical accurate though 46 BC is the birth date of Augustus)
perhaps if i learn to script i can do that for you? ~D (if you like the idea) btw EB has multiple reforms so it is possible. (perhaps i can ask them? if not in the scriptorium tutorials)

Don't worry about the naming convention I've used in the faction previews Spartan, they were just for illustrative purposes. I'd thought about putting the names into Latin, but since my Latin vocabulary doesn't exist, they might as well stay in English for the next version ~D

I haven't thought about scripting in more than one reform, but as you say its possible since other projects such as EB have acheived this. What has been done though is to restrict Praetorians and First Cohorts to only a handful of settlements. Without double-checking the script, I think these 3 units (Early First Cohort, First Cohort, Praetorians) are now only available in the 4 Roman starting capitals. This should make thing interesting ~D

Also, legionaries (both early and standard) are now only recruitable in the Italian peninsular and Sicily. This is 12 regions in total, so again this will force a player to retrain legionary cohorts back in the original Italian regions. Auxiliaries can still be raised in frontline settlements, as was probably the case during Roman times.

Tbh, I need to tweak the ZOR quite a bit from how it was in v0.2. Chariots have gone, so I've already removed that hidden resource from the files. What would be good is to set-up more regional hidden resources / ZORs, so this can restrict unit recruitment to logical areas. For example, it seems strange to be able to recruit Desert Spearmen on the frozen Steppes; might take a while though ~D

Battle is about the end and no sword appears! Task 1 Complete!
How I Did This: In Export Descr Unit.txt change this:
6, 2, no, 0, 0, melee, simple, piercing, spear, 25 ,1 (from Nile Spearmen)
to this: 0, 0, no, 0, 0, , no, no, no, 25 ,1 (dont change the 25,1) I got the first example from nile spearmen all you do is change the numbers to 0 melee, simple, piercing, to no. and spear to none. the stats for the secondary weapon is now deleted.
In Descr Model Battle change this: fs_spearman, fs_s1_swordsman and delete fs_s1_swordsman and the comma. it should look like this after that:
fs_spearman notice no comma.

BUT, as you can see the men in the rear; if they fight someone they wont lower their spears so it looks like he is punching him.
https://img148.imageshack.us/img148/1754/00148xn.jpg
look! the pikemen on the far left ducks the hoplites attack!
https://img205.imageshack.us/img205/4255/00154ed.jpg
at least this one has his spear down.

How I did this: all you do is the same thing for nubian spearmen but to all pikemen and hoplites dont forget the mercenary hoplite! if there is a fourth word after no, write none. example:
0, 0, no, 0, 0, no, no, no, none,
and thats all!

I've finally got round to making these secondary weapon adjustments. Many have now been removed from various infantry and cavalry types, including swords, axes and maces.

I know that the hoplites / phalangites have a few issues at close range hand-to-hand, but at least they cannot switch to secondaries and break-off from the formation.

Also, in all the time I've played RTW, I've never seen the AI cavalry switch to secondary weapons whilst in melee. It was another reason why the secondaries needed to be removed ~D

im curius what was greek hoplites with shield wall like. i know it crashes if you play quick or historical battles but i think i can fix that. (historical battles dont work because the hoplites still use phalanx. i could go to the folder and edit a few things including the scripts for those battles. just change phalanx to shield wall. for quick battles,
Rome - Total War\Data\world\maps\custom\quick
and delete all the files there.

Seasoned Alcoholic

I think you need to use the mod: switch command line to make use of BI's shieldwall ability. There are alternatives though, such as a more tightly-packed formation. lt has already implemented this into his SPQR mod by the sounds of things, basically you just replace the 'loose formation' with an edited one. Obviously the edited 'loose formation' values would be smaller than the standard 'tight formation' in order for the units to form into a more tightly-packed line.

I've already tweaked unit spacing for many units, including the Romans. I'm not sure whether a tighter formation for the Greek factions would work that well with the phalanx ability. Also, you have to watch for things like 'testudo' formation and unit spacing, otherwise things can get a bit messy when the unit attempts to revert back to a nomral formation. Think this was bugged in an earlier vanilla version, but it did get fixed in a later patch.

I really like them, much better than the ineffective archer crews from vanilla. Especially when you give the javelin crews armour piercing abilities ~D

I've run a few simple tests with elephants, basically increased their charge bonus and attack stats. They now seem to do much more damage than previously, but the units they were tested on (various Roman infantry) still have the same attack / defense stats from v0.2. S'pose I'll have to overhaul all the attack & defence stats for all units first, then tweak the elephants charge bonus and attack stats again to get a polished version.

hey SA i found the EB animations pack (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=60430&highlight)! imo they are far more superior than S1 animations. but something that might intrest you is the two handed sarrisa animation. so pikemen will use two-handed animations. there are alot more in that link too. (its like S1 animations but way improved) and of course you will have to ask the EB team to use it. (but dont worry their friendly)

Seasoned Alcoholic

That's an interesting find Spartan. Tbh, RTW should've at least included orthodox 2-handed phalangite and mounted 2-handed spearmen / lancer animations, as they are seriously lacking in these areas. These would be the areas I would like to improve if the option were available, I think S1's animations continue to do a very good job on the battlefield ~D

Do you know who leads the EB team? I'd like to speak with them directly, or at the very least the person who created these animations. Alin looks to have been inactive for a while now from the link you've provided.

I've recently been granted permission to use elements of the Scythian models featured in this topic by Dark89, teamleader of RTR:

looking for scyths???? (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=55161)

The Scythian models featured in this topic were created by the work of several authors.

I'm currently awaiting responses from webbird regarding his Scythian reskins and elements of his models, and also ATG regarding elements of his work that is featured in that topic.

nice scyths. btw ever thought of giving legion names in RTW? (look at the tutorials in TWC)

Seasoned Alcoholic
07-23-2006, 13:48
Not really Spartan, I'm not that fussy about legionary first cohort names as other mods have already done. That's not to say I haven't spent time renaming the vanilla units, here's a few examples:

Naked Fanatics --- [Faction Name] Fanatical Warriors
Chosen Archers --- [Faction Name] Foot Archer Nobility
Legionary Cohort --- Roman Legionaries
Spartan Hoplites --- Spartan Guard

I could list them all, but it may take a few hours ~D

Anyways, I've been rebalancing the missile stats. I've got the javelins, javelin crews and slingers pretty much sorted, but I've only run a few simple tests on lightly, moderately and heavily-armoured units with fairly constant results.

Its been quite hard to achieve this, because certain projectiles need to do more / less damage depending on what attributes they have. EG armour-piercing, body-piercing, nothing etc. I've also adjusted the mount effects, and need to run some tests out in this area as well in relation to missile units.

The Spartan (Returns)
07-23-2006, 14:56
btw if you have EB animations on...
give macedonian cavalry and any other cavalry (except roman, or barbarian, or greek cities) the two handed mounted spear animation.
any unit with a spear and no shiled the two handed spear animation.
any pikemen given two handed phalanx animation.
any greek cities cavalry a over head mounted animation.
and if you wanted give british light chariots javelin animation. (and javelins of course)
good luck
hope that helps.
and good luck with editing the stats!

Thanks, once (and if) I gain the necessary permissions from the EB team, I'll be intending to use pretty much what you've listed above. For example, the Sarmatians would use the two-handed mounted spearmen animation in order to use their two-handed kontos lance properly.

Just finished editing the rest of the missile stats, such as archers, horse archers, camel archers. I've scrapped all chariot units from the game, so there's no need to use javelin crews with them.

im gonna say ir here instead of at TWC. what took so long to get the Scythians up?

Seasoned Alcoholic

The Scythian Models were made by webbird, but he did use some model parts from RTR and ATG's units, so I needed to request permission from all part creator's before building the units. AFAIK, webbird made the reskins as well.

Also, these previews are quite time-consuming; they take roughly 45 minutes to put together. Multiply it by 16 for each preview and you can see its kept me busy ~D

btw Spartans can be defeated by Royal Pikemen.Imo they should be stronger. they Imo should be the strongest greek culture unit.

I've just run a few tests in custom battles with Spartans vs Royal Pikemen, Spartans vs Royal (or Armoured) Hoplites, and Spartans vs Praetorians.

Originally, the Spartans devastated the Royal Pikemen and Royal Hoplites, so I reduced the Spartans hitpoints from 3 to 2. This made things more interesting, but the Spartans still came out on top, but with more casualties as a result.

However, the Spartans with 2 hitpoints didn't do to well against the Praetorians. The 2 times I tested this 1v1, the Spartans only killed about roughly half of the Praetorians before being finished off, even though they started with the higher killing ratio.

I think it was to do with the way the Spartans formation gradually disintegrated, and the Praetorians surrounded them from both flanks each time. This may change if I implement Darth's formations, but then again it might not. Guess its the old sword is better than spear issue, or the fact that the Praetorians are heavily armoured.

try DM formations. but thats probably not the problem.

Thanks to the research from wlesmana and the tutorial from Dol Guldur, boiling oil has now been removed from gateway defences. Since the unit stat system incorporates multiple hitpoints, the effects of the oil were downgraded from how this feature functioned in vanilla.

is it possbile to make rams more ressitante to fire arrows? they burn to easily when trying to break down stonewall gates.

Seasoned Alcoholic
08-01-2006, 22:52
Yeah, I've noticed this a while ago and decided to wait for some feedback on it ~D I'll have a look into this before the next release, its quite important because the AI builds rams against stone walls, whereas the should really be building 9 siege towers to challenge the human defender ~D

The Spartan (Returns)
08-01-2006, 23:03
but if the ram breaks through, it can create challenges for the player if he doesnt have alot of troops to guard the gate.

Seasoned Alcoholic
08-02-2006, 10:17
I've adjusted the ram flammability and health parameters. Run a few tests in custom battles, and things are more interesting than previously. I'd still recommend using siege towers against walls though, if your men and the ram survive and breach the gate, they may have taken heavy casualties in the process.

The Spartan (Returns)
08-02-2006, 15:25
yeah so its good to let the mercenaries do it. btw can you show me how? id like to implement this into RTW.

The file(s) you need to mod are in the Siege Tower Aspects tutorial I made a while back:

How To...Modify Siege Tower Aspects (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=62498)

The areas you need to adjust are engine_health and engine_ignition. It takes a while to get the desired results in custom battles, and is also difficult to select a value that fits well for the 3 stone wall types. Each has varying rates of fire, but the epic stone walls are the only ones which actually damage siege equipment. You can measure this by the hovering the cursor over the equipment and noting the ram damage percentage.

Indeed it does ~D I've now fixed the link above.

The Ptolemaic models and skins haven't changed that much, even though webbird's Ptolemaic reskins have been implemented. I haven't gone for the historically correct-looking units for this faction.

Well I'd spent some time last night tweaking the flammability settings for a number of siege equipment, inclusing rams, towers and ladders. The rams and towers now seem more unpredictable, which is a good thing, so I'll test out to see how the ladders hold out to a barrage.

RTG v1.0 has now been released. There are download links on the first page & first post of this topic, as well as installation instruction links. Here is a summary list of changes that have been made to RTG since the last RTG open beta v0.2 as released:

Night Battles, related graphical effects (EG torches, building window lights etc), traits, triggers, images etc have now been incorporated into the mod. Thanks to DimeBagHo for the great tutorial on how to do this!
Archer's Skymod has been included. Thanks to Archer for a major improvement in various battlefield daytime / nightime visuals!
Night fighter capability has been given to all faction leaders and faction heirs. Thanks to Dejan77.
Various pike units now use the vanilla underarm animations. Thanks to those who suggested and / or voted for this.
Desert Axemen now use SigniferOne's barbarian swordsmen animations to reflect the use of their axes. Previously units would stab using the axes, which looked out of place. Thanks to The Spartan.
Carthaginian & Eastern factions (Carthage, Numidia, Pontus, Armenia, Parthia) can now construct the highest temple levels in huge cities. Thanks to Dejan77.
Added a few new Zoroastrian ancillaries and triggers.
Made use of various BI character traits and triggers.
Tweaked threshold rates for all character traits to avoid bias and repetition.
Prevented 'Generic Rebel General' (IE rebel equites unit) from spawning with rebel armies. Dependent upon regional location, rebel family members will now be more formidable than previously.
Relocated Roma to the opposite bank of the Tiber river; relocated SPQR family members.
Tweaked mercenary recruitment pools and mercenary replenishment times.
Unit naming overhaul: many existing units have now been renamed, only a handful retain their original names due to convenience.
The cheat_oliphants units (spawned on gladiator uprising) have been modded down from the overscaled Yubtseb (Bestbuy) elephants to a renamed War Elephant Mercenaries, which are identical (in size terms) to the african war elephant mercenaries.
Overhauled many existing faction names, more info available here (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=44507)
Tweaked a couple of unit voice entries.
Tweaked numerous shield value stats.
Adjusted camel mount unit spacing from the default.
Added a couple of mount effects to previously omitted units.
Tweaked collision mass of infantry.
Quick Battles should now work properly if selected, and should be more random than previously.
Barbarian factions can now construct paved roads. The costs associated with construction, as well as construction times, have been increased in order to make constructing these improvements more difficult and time consuming.
Various unit spacing has been recoded for many unit types.
Selected unit types now make use of the hide_long_grass ability.
Roman factions skins, models, sprites overhaul, courtesy of GODzilla's & Pinarius' MODDING LEGIONS Full Pack v1.3b (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=52786). Thanks to Lusted (for recommending the MODDING LEGIONS Full Pack), HunterKYA & The Spartan (for suggesting the Romans require reskinning).
New region added in Hibernia. Tweaked resources as necessary.
Reconstructed Iazyges province; split into two smaller regions. Tweaked resources as necessary.
Relocated Julii starting armies on campaign map.
Given Astyages region to the Parthian Empire at the start of a new campaign.
Gallia Transalpina has been given to the Rebels from The Greek Cities.
The Greek Cities have been given Lydia (in Asia Minor) from the Rebels. Thanks to Dejan77 for the suggestion to relocate the Greek Cities from Gallia Transalpina.
Removed a Greek Cities diplomat from the Gallia Transalpina region.
Tweaked Greek Cities starting armies.
Renamed Dumatha to Thalaba.
Fixed a small hole in the campaign map at coordinates 192,114.
Tweaked a few height values on the campaign map in map_heights.hgt
Added roman generals, lesser generals, centurions, standard bearers and eagle standard bearers from the MODDING LEGIONS Full Pack.
Updated Greek_Cities and Parthia campaign map graphics to reflect changes in province ownership.
Added Professor Spatula's Greek Sword Hoplites model.
Tweaked Professor Spatula's reskinned Numidian standard bearers so that they appear for a wider range of Numidian units.
Implemented extensive elements of LAca's Numidian & Greek Projects to the mod.
Implemented extensive areas of webbird's Xmasbox to the mod, including the artwork of webbird, maximusminimus, Warspite.
Implemented many of KALI's Parthian reskins to the mod.
Implemented KALI's banners to the mod.
Implemented Kaweh K's earlier battlefield banners (the latest version of battle banners, faction symbols etc still needs to be implemented).
Implemented UI cards created by webbird.
Implemented UI cards created by LAca.
Created brand new sprites for all of the latest units added to the mod so far.
Pinarius' Realistic Horse Mod has now been implemented in the mod.
Edited an island in map_regions.tga so that it now belongs to the secondary Scandinavian province, rather than Denmark. Thanks to Carsten.
Relocated several ports on the campaign map to prevent 'collisions' with others. Thanks to Carsten.
Given Arabia Petrea Secunda (formerly Sinai) starting province to the Ptolemaic Dynasty.
Relocated Ptolemaic family member to settlement location.
Relocated a couple of campaign map resources.
Added 5 additional crossing points (fords) on several rivers across the campaign map. This should hopefully improve accessibility for both human and AI players, improve road generation etc.
Mercenary recruitment pools / AORs have been restructured. There are now more than double the amount present in a standard vanilla version. Recruitment has also been varified by different types of unit, as well as a few new mercenaries.
Movement modifiers have been adjusted.
Extensive changes have been made to the unit stat system, many areas have been recoded from scratch.
General's Bodyguard units have been reduced in size, but have been made more powerful to compensate. Thanks to Angel.
Adjusted the majority of units skeletons from earlier versions of the mod.
BI Victory Conditions have now been tweaked.
Tweaked a few construction aspects of some buildings.
Removed many types of secondary weapons from a variety of units.
Made Genova (Liguria) a town instead of a vilage.
Added a few relevant eventpics for some cultures.
Restructured many existing ZORs, created many new ones dependent upon unit type and culture. Recruitment should now be more restricted as a result. Irrelevant ones have been removed.
Recoded rebel factions and rebel starting armies. Included many omitted rebel units as well as new ones that have been created, resulting in more powerful rebel armies.
Recoded starting denarii per faction dependent upon predicted financial situation.
Recoded AI personalities to reflect extensive changes to recruitment rosters, starting financial situation etc.
Implemented webbird's Scythians. Featured work from webbird (Scythian reskins and model work), the RTR team (elements of the Scythian models) and Anastasio The Great, aka ATG (elements of the Scythian models). My thanks to all involved for their fantastic artwork for this somewhat neglected vanilla RTW faction http://www.twcenter.net/forums/images/smilies/emoticons/thumbsup.gif
Created brand new Scythian sprites for the Scythian units.
Recoded additional elements of EDU, in particular unit recruitment, upkeep, weapon and armour upgrade costs. Also adjusted number of turns recruitment dependent upon unit type and status.
Recoded mercenary recruitment costs.
Boiling oil from gateway defences has now been removed due to reported inefficiencies.
Relocated the port (again) in Arabia Petrea Secunda to an alternate location.
Added a couple of new character traits.
Modified existing triggers and built many new ones to improve randomness of certain traits.
Adjusted battering ram health and flammability parameters.
Tweaked various ZORs to prevent units from appearing the incorrect side of the marian Reforms.
Edited faction campaign descriptions.
Updated campaign menu descriptions and tooltips.
Modified additional areas of historical battles, including starting armies, experience, weapon and armour upgrades etc.
Allowed both factions to be playable in certain historical battles, but not all have been adjusted because of AI issues. Thanks to The Lacedaemonian / The Spartan.
Changed Teutoburg Forest historical battle to a winter setting. Thanks to The Lacedaemonian / The Spartan.
Adjusted ZORs (again) to iron-out any potential issues with unit recruitment both sides of the Marian Reforms.
Tweaked ancillary chance rates. Ancillaries should appear less frequently than in previous versions.
Tweaked pirate navy spawn values. Rebel pirate vessels should appear less frequently than in previous versions.
Tweaked rebel spawn values. Rebel armies should appear less frequently than in previous versions, although they will be more powerful. For more information, updates and latest news, please refer to the RTG Subforums (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=118) based @ TWC.

Ok, so I downloaded RTG v1 yesterday and installed it this morning. I deleted the files as the readme told me to. But when I started a campaign with The Dacian-Getae Tribes I met this:

https://img144.imageshack.us/img144/1548/bugrtgpt0.th.png (https://img144.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bugrtgpt0.png)

Has this happend before? Is this a bug? Or is it just I who screwed up, again?

Other people who've downloaded the mod have had similar problems Wiking|sWe, perhaps it has something to do with deleting map_heights.hgt? Anyway, from the feedback they've provided to me, apparently all you need to do is close RTW, reload it and start again, and the campaign map should be fine.

The only file that may cause this glitch is the removal of map_heights.hgt, but I'm not entirely sure as I've never experienced it myself. It may be another file or combination of multiple files that cause this problem, but by the sounds of things its only temporary.

Here's a relevant link in case you have any further installation problems:

RTG V1.0 EXE INSTALLER VERSION

https://img225.imageshack.us/img225/7638/ls2tq6.th.jpg (https://img225.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ls2tq6.jpg)https://img113.imageshack.us/img113/8991/ls7zg4.th.jpg (https://img113.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ls7zg4.jpg)https://img113.imageshack.us/img113/9748/ls9zv3.th.jpg (https://img113.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ls9zv3.jpg)

Rome: Total Gameplay (RTG) is now available for download. This download is RTG v1.0 and is is an EXE Installer. You will need to install this version on a clean vanilla install, which has also been appropriately patched. Also, the default destination directory (the ...\data folder) must be selected as the target installation directory. This is to ensure the installer works correctly. Here are the download mirrors:

RTG v1.0 EXE Installer (http://files.filefront.com/RTG_v1_EXE_Installerzip/;5362013;;/fileinfo.html) @ FileFront

RTG v1.0 EXE Installer (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PTVDOKO0) @ Megaupload

The download is compressed in ZIP format, and is around 115MB in size. The uncompressed total filesize is around 300MB.

If you have broadband internet connection, the download time shouldn't be too long. Although with slower connection speeds it may take a while, especially if the file hosting URL is busy. I would recommend using a reliable download manager tool if you are on a slower connection.

You'll need a ZIP extractor tool such as WINZIP to open the ZIP file, if you don't have this you can find out more (and download) below:

WINZIP (http://www.winzip.com/)

For vanilla RTW patches which are required for this mod to work properly, you can download them from TW.COM or say, DOWNLOAD.COM (use the search tool to find the RTW patches), here are links:

TW.COM Support (http://www.totalwar.com/en/support/supportrome.html)

DOWNLOAD.COM (http://www.download.com/)

There should be 3 files included with the self-extracting ZIP download, these include the RTG v1 installation program, readme / installation instructions and also the RTG credit section.

I hope you enjoy Rome: Total Gameplay!

RTG V1.0 EXE INSTALLER README

Rome: Total Gameplay (RTG) is now available for download. This download is RTG v1.0 and is a self-extracting ZIP file. This version is recommended if you have other mods installed, or if you wish to install this version manually. Only download this version if you're confident about manual installations. Here are the download mirrors:

RTG v1.0 Self-Extracting ZIP (http://files.filefront.com/RTG_v1_Self_Extracting_ZIPzip/;5361312;;/fileinfo.html) @ FileFront

RTG v1.0 Self-Extracting ZIP (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VI0Q2DQJ) @ Megaupload

The download is compressed in ZIP format, and is around 150MB in size.

There should be 3 files included with the self-extracting ZIP download, these include the DATA folder, readme / installation instructions and also the RTG credit section.

I hope you enjoy Rome: Total Gameplay!

RTG V1.0 SELF-EXTRACTING ZIP README

----------------------
#ROME: TOTAL GAMEPLAY#
----------------------

(1) Install a vanilla version of Rome: Total War (RTW), EG v1.0

(2) Patch up as follows (this will depend on which version of RTW / BI is contained on your CDs / DVDs):

RTW patch v1.1, RTW v1.1 (http://www.download.com/Rome-Total-War-v1-1-patch/3000-7485_4-10325728.html?tag=lst-0-3)
RTW patch v1.2, RTW v1.2 (http://www.download.com/Rome-Total-War-v1-2-patch/3000-7485_4-10361710.html?tag=lst-0-10)
BI patch v1.4 (this includes RTW patch v1.3 on CD, which will be installed), note that this patch is available on the BI CD. Alternatively, if you don't own a copy of BI, install patch RTW v1.3 (http://www.sega.com/support/pcdownloads/rometotalwar_patch/English/rome_totalwar_patch_1-3.zip) instead.
BI patch v1.6 (this includes RTW patch v1.5), BI v1.6 (http://www.sega.com/support/pcdownloads/rometotalwar_patch/v1.6/English/rome_total_war_patch_1-6.zip)
(3) Create a backup of your DATA folder located at C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War

(4) After the backup has been created (this usually takes a while to complete), install the files manually to the appropriate destination directories.

(5) Once you have finished manual installation, you will need to delete the following files so that the mod will work correctly (create backups first if you want):

map.rwm (IE the campaign map) @ C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\Data\world\maps\base
map_heights.hgt @ C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\Data\world\maps\base
events.dat (IE sound file) @ C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\Data\sounds
radar_map1.tga @ C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\Data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign
radar_map2.tga @ C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\Data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign
descr_vegetation.db @ C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\Data
(6) Start up RTW as normal. If you attempt to play a new imperial campaign, you will have to wait longer than usual for the new map.rwm file to be automatically generated by the game.

NOTES:

The Self-Extracting ZIP uses exactly the same structure as a vanilla RTW version, so copy and paste files using the structure provided as a reference point.
I would recommend copying and pasting individual text files one at a time rather than complete subdirectory folders, otherwise you may corrupt your existing (potentially modified) version of RTW.
JONESOFT GENERIC MOD ENABLER (JSGME)

It may well be possible to use the JSGME tool with RTG Self-Extracting ZIP version. Here's a tutorial and download link on how to use & install the JSGME tool:

RTG ADDITIONAL DOWNLOADS

Here is a list of additional downloads that can be installed after the main download has been completed. Note that you may need to read the whole topic in each case to locate the most recent and relevant download link.

RECOMMENDED ADJUSTMENTS

Remember to make necessary backups before you modify the text files.

Unit Names

descr_names.txt @ ...\data
descr_names_lookup.txt @ ...\data
names.txt @ ...\data\text
This is an extract of a commented out (using semicolons) character name from names.txt:

;{Nidintu-Bel} Nidintu-Bel
Delete this entry of Nidintu-Bel.

Also delete Nidintu-Bel in descr_names.txt, as well as in descr_names_lookup.txt to remove this name from the game. You will need to restart your campaign for the changes to take affect.

Previously the game may have had trouble finding this name since entries existed in descr_names & descr_names_lookup, but the text entry was commented out, so this may have caused problems.

Number of Ranks

For those of you that wish to have a uniform number of ranks for all hoplite units, you need to make a very simple adjustment in export_descr_unit.txt (EDU) @ ...\data, as below:

Open EDU, hit Ctrl+F to open the search dialogue box.
Type in merc_greek_hoplites and do a search.
You should now see the mercenary hoplite unit entry, so close the search dialogue box.
At present, you should see the following on the mercenary hoplite's formation line:

formation 1, 1, 2, 2, 5, square, phalanx
Simply change the 5 to a 4, in order to bring the formation in line with other hoplite types.
Your formation line entry should now look as below:

formation 1, 1, 2, 2, 4, square, phalanx
Save your changes and close the text file. Note that you do not need to delete map.rwm in order for the formation changes to take place, but you can do so if you wish.
Fur Trade Resource UI Issue

There is a slight typo in the text file which references the fur TGA image. Here is a quick solution on how to fix this problem that apparently is displayed in the trade resource summary scroll:

Browse to your Data folder, located @ C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\Data directory.
Open descr_sm_resources text file, maximise this if necessary.
The 4th resource down is the fur resource. Simply change the icon line:

icon data/ui/resources/resource_furs.tga
Ensure that this line looks as below:

icon data/ui/resources/resource_fur.tga
Save your changes and close the text file. Delete map.rwm to apply necessary changes.
All we have done is to change furs to fur in the icon line, and this should now make the game locate the correct UI graphic for this trade resource.

RTG UNIFIED ROMAN FACTION

https://img100.imageshack.us/img100/607/unifiedrome1ex5.jpg

This is an optional download for RTG v1.0, and replaces the House of Julii, House of Brutii, House of Scipii and Senate (SPQR) with a unified Roman Republic faction. It also incorporates a couple of recommended changes, as well as making additional modification to the ancillary and character trait system featured in the mod. Here are the download mirrors:

RTG Unified Roman Faction (http://files.filefront.com/RTG_Unified_Roman_Faction_Upda/;5396999;;/fileinfo.html) @ FileFront
Filesize: zipped / compressed = over 700KB; unzipped / uncompressed = over 6MB

RTG Unified Roman Faction (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YDKC0JIF) @ Megaupload
Filesize: zipped / compressed = over 700KB; unzipped / uncompressed = over 6MB

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Create necessary backups before incorporating this modification into RTG v1.0.

(1) You need to have RTG v1.0 installed to take advantage of this Unified Roman Faction. Otherwise, use at your own risk!
(2) Simply copy and paste the accompanying text files into the appropriate directory location.
(3) Delete map.rwm @ C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\Data\world\maps\base in order for the campaign map changes to be applied. A new map.rwm file will be generated when you start a new imperial campaign.

Quick question, currently playing as Thrace, doing rather well to, but when can thrace unlock the pikemen, onagers and Thracian officers core? After the Marian reforms?

Yep. After the reforms.

Ah okies, thanks for the feedback, i was wondering! On my current game im upto about 225bc, taken up the provices up until campus scythia, all the way across asia minor to the edge of the armenian territories (had to take out the agressive pontus) and am blocking the selucians out of the peninsula with two forts guarding mountain valleys. They selucians do have two towns inside the peninsula but im working on them, recently agreed to ceasefire and trade rights, with them paying me tribute, when those 5 turns are up, theyre getting oblitterated!!
On the other side of the agean a coalition of the brutii, the dacians and myself has struck against the macedon/greek cities coalition, and have now got them containted in the bottom of greece, however its only a matter of time until the brutii attack me!

Loving the mod, very addictive, great battles and new units, the only problem is im playing it that much im never getting round to installing any new mods!!

Hi

Really enjoying the mod but I am experiencing frequent CTD's playing POntus after about 237BC. Any method/feedback route to provide information to 'those that mod' to see if it is a real issue or just my machine?

Really like the work you have done here:2thumbsup:

Hello.

I decided to restart my Thracian campaign with RTG installed instead of just plain old vanilla, having just fought my first battle with this mod I notcied a few things.

1) Morale: For some reason soldiers seem to be incredibly brave, even lower quality levy troops, for the entire duration of the battle neither mine nor my enemies units changed past Eager or Steady despite losses (some heavy), flanking and rear attacks, and the effect of being attacked at night (in the case of the enemy who I was attacking at night). The enemy light cavalry fought my militia hoplites to the last man with no change in morale.
The enemy peltasts and hoplites did eventually break and run but it was an immediate break with no wavering, shaken etc. and was the result of massive casualties, as in virtually the whole unit, the hoplites were so few by the time they broke that the remainder were cut down immediateley and none escaped.

2) For some strange reason my hoplites when attacking light cavalry did not inflict casualties very fast and were finding the fight difficult without support from falxmen and militia cavalry - light cavalry should not pwn hoplites in a frontal unsupported attack!

3) I noticed that both mine and my enemies Hoplites in Phalanx formations broke up heavily and quite quickly once engaged (to the front) which seemed to have a negative effect on their fighting capability (as would be expected). I don't understand why they broke up so much or under so little pressure but rather than a typical Phalanx fight it broke up into more of a scrum, also because (and I know this is a deliberate feature) the enemy hoplites carried on using their spears, when I flanked with my falxmen those who turned to face them presented them with a wall of spears and inflicted more csualties than normal, it effectively removed the tactical advantage of a flanking attack by heavy shock troops - I may just as well have made a frontal attack .

I'm not trying to make it sound like I don't like the mod - its very nice and I want to play it, but I'm confused as to if these things are supposed to happen, if so, on what grounds were they implemented? if not, why are these things happening and how can they be fixed?

Thank you to anyone who replies

Is this an effect caused by cavalry units for having 2 hitpoint?

The Spartan (Returns)
10-21-2006, 01:50
cavalry now has 3 hitpoints in RTG 1.0

10-21-2006, 02:27
Oh. Do you think that being able do challange phalanx from the front is a side effect caused from this new change?

The Spartan (Returns)
10-21-2006, 02:29
probably 3 hitpoints is quite strong

Been playing RTG once again, after a rather successful campaign as the Ilberians, i decided to go for the Scythians, however on about the 4th turn, there are rebels outside my province ont he caspian sea (i cant remember the name) and when i engage them, it KTD's, its now happenned 3 times in a row :S
Also, the province that is furtherest north that you own when you start, i can only scroll the map up so far before it inverts, the town is no longer visible and the map turns grey.
Any thoughts?

Back on RTG again, this time, the Brutii!
I'm only on a short campaign but i made it last so as i'd be able to take on the reforms. Anyway, got my two provinces at the heel, the towns over the river, going all the way up to Pola, from there stretching down to sicily, and back up all the way to campus scythii, taking in the bosphorus, i i dont have any land wher ethe dacians are, but the inside of macedonia, greece and thracia are mine. also, all the islands in the eastern med, crete onwards belong to me, as does cyrene, the two rebel settlements on the southern side of asia minor, looking onto the eastern med. The western end of asia minor also belongs to me with all but the northen most settlement taken out. Anyway, ive got a big army on sicily ready to taken the northern most settlement of the island (taken by rebels) and another big army in the ocean, on its way to aleria ( i think!) ready to crush rebels, and when popularity allows i plan to take rome, then finish the campaign with a last blow to the greeks!

I seem to have somewhat diversed from where i originally planned to go with this lol, but at least you have an idea of the scope of my time here, and why the following is a problem.

On 205bc, for the past 6 or so times ive tried, whenever i end turn, on the julli's turn, it also CTD's, and my god it's frustrating!

Thus any help is desired if possible!

What tools did you use to implement that unique look on RTG? Im talking about the shaders that make units look so "i'll come out of the screen and bite you" and those torches that give them the right mood?
