Well, you can do it yourself, if you want.

Hard to say. I'm listening to a lot of Metalucifer and Negligent Collateral Collapse, but next week, it may be something entirely (as far as metal goes) different.

Ramones are good. However they didn't 'invent' Punk Rock. I believe that accolade belongs in equal measure to messrs. Lou Reed and Jimmy James Osterberg.

Currently I have two favorites, although I expect that to go up to three as soon as I can get ahold of some Floyd LP's:

Creedence Clearwater Revival- they play the best damn 50's and 60's rock and roll you'll ever hear, and some of the best blues.

Jimi Hendrix (more specifically, everything except his Band of Gypsies work): Jimi played... well, Jimi played Jimi. He was really sort of a genre of his own; even though his roots were easily fixed in Blues, noone ever played, or could play quite like him. Part of this was the fact that he also doubled as his own producer, to a certain extent, so what he wanted to be heard was what you heard.

I would say that punk would have been nothing if it wasn't for the subculture. The Sex Pistols, Siouxse and the Banshees and the other groups from that scene would have defined punk, for all of their faults, and after the six-month run, punk truly did die.

I saw the Pistols in 1976 at the Lesser Free Trade hall in Manchester and like to think of myself as amongst the first Punk/New wave.

It is true that by the late summer of '77 the thing was dead. IMO the watershed was the Queens Silver Jubilee. 'We mean it man'. I also agree that in the UK the Pistols and to a lesser extent the Damned and the Clash were the motors driving the movement. It was always about more than the music. Attitude was just as important, and don't get me onto the clothes we wore. The number of times the coppers stopped me just because I wore a shirt with 'prison' arrows on it!!!:laugh4:

Anyway back OT.

I can see how the Ramones would be a candidate for starting the US style of Punk. Indeed one of the first times I heard the word punk* (*a 16th century prostitute or a peice of driftwood haha) was in an NME article about Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee.

However, the case is they were following in the footsteps of other bands 3 chords tricks, or even 2 chords in Carbona not Glue. :2thumbsup:

Proto punk bands such as the Stooges, MC5, the Velvet Underground, New York Dolls all paved the way for the mid 70's explosion we now call punk rock. In particular Lou Reed and Iggy Pop (little jimmy james) are quite rightly accorded the accolade of 'godfathers of punk'.

Their legacy lives on. No more boring old fart guitar solos.*eyes Pink Floyd* Before punk, most axemen were preening, posturing onanists, these days they are just onanists. :laugh4:

I wouldn't say punk "truly died" because the Ramones were still making music all through the 80s.

This is from the Rocket to Russia sleeve (I paraphrased for some):

The Ramones were about to go on tour, and they had their breakthrough album, Rocket to Russia, ready to go when Joey had to be rushed to hospital with second and third degree burns (he used the steam from a tea kettle to clear his airways before a show) and the tour had to be cancelled.

While Joey was recuperting in hospital, the Sex Pistols burst onto the punk scene and became the quintessential punk band in the world. Safety pins, razor blades, chopped hair-cuts, snarling, vomiting - everything that had nothing to do with the Ramones was suddenly in vogue, and it killed any chance Rocket to Russia had of getting any airplay.

The Ramones because somwhat indelibly stamped in everbody's mind, as a cult band that wasn't for everybody.

20 years later, when punk finally became mainsream, every band out there gave a nod of gratitude to The Ramones for saving Rock 'n' Roll, not the other bands (The Damned, The Clash, Sex Pistols).

The Rocket to Russia sleeve also mentions the inspirations and musical background of each member of the band:

Johnny (Guitar) - The Beatles and Elvis
Dee Dee (Bass) - Bay City Rollers, Stones, New York Dolls and Stooges;
Tommy (Drums) - Hendrix, Mountain Stooges, and the Dolls
Joey (Vocals) - Herman's Hermits, 1910 Fruitgum Co., Sweet Marc Bolan, New York Dolls, Velvet Underground and the Stooges,

I would say all these influences coalesced to form punk, and I'd credit the Ramones with the invention.

*Slaps Zorba across the internet.
Punk muscially (especially with bands like the Ramones) was against the bloated music that was main stream. It went straight back to the roots of Rock and Roll. A songs by The Crickets and the Early Beatles are closer musically to punk music than Hendrix ever was.

I don't really have a favorite band. I can't keep track of the new stuff, and all of my old favorites have either broken up or sold out. I'm just living in the past now... :help:

Who said anything about stadium-rock? I'm talking about Hendrix here...

Well okay, Hendrix has the rebel factor. I give you that.
But what they have in common is that I can listen to a whole
Ramones album while they play a guitar solo.

Man, stadium-rock is awful.

Right. :smash:

~ You are joking, right? You know his real name and you don't know that he only did the Bowie/glam thing for one album? Shame on you.

~ Yeah, because someone GG Allin actually invented being shocking on stage and self-hate. PFFFFFFFFFT!

Not really a Pink Floyd fan, but DO NOT diss the guitar solo. Since I have no rhythm, all I do on my guitar is solo. And I like listening to solos. Some of my favorite self-indulgent guitar solos are:

Alive-Mike McCready

Crossfire-Stevie Ray Vaughan

A bunch more from McCready and SRV...

Some from Hendrix...

A few from Neil Young and Kim Thayil...

I didn't say he invented being shocking on stage, he just took it to a completely different level. Of course, he had the advantage of not actually trying to please his audience (and not having to answer to a major record label).

"Shock is all in your head" - Rock is Dead.

Everyone is different. As long as you enjoy the music, shock value is secondary. I am not shocked easily at all, I watch a lot of extreme cinema. Shock to me is just playing with extremeties.

I didn't say he invented being shocking on stage
Let's not tapdance, you said MM is a "watered-down" version of this guy, which is totally absurd, they don't play the same music or do the same things to shock people, nor have the same intention behind the shock value.

Funny you should mention that. "Playing with extremities" was part of GG's act. ~;)

DO NOT diss the guitar solo. Since I have no rhythm, all I do on my guitar is solo. And I like listening to solos.
I was at a live show when people started screaming "Free Bird!" The guy playing, Mike Doughty, yelled into the mic, "Don't you people know that Free Bird is Latin for 'Fifteen guys on guitars, all soloing at once'?"

Anybody else a Soul Coughing fan, or am I showing my age?

Actually I know his real name (and gleefully joined in chanting "Brian....Brian...Brian" during his set at Reading the time before last) and I didn't even know he did a Bowie thing for one album. Its ALL his music I was talking about.

I've seen him live twice. The first time he spent a long time telling us how evil he was, and it was a bit dull (hence the "Brian" chant). The second time he came on and played his music and did the show, and it was entertaining, so fair play to him.

Usually the people that care enough to critisize this band haven't listened to the music. You have to listen to the lyrics to understand why they are the way they are for each album, and they are compeltely different in almost every way with each album. He is like Bowie in that way.

I'm not critisizing Marilyn Manson. They aren't one of my top bands, but the music is interesting, it's different, and it pisses off the religious right so I'm all for it. I'm not saying GG Allin was the greatest either, I wasn't a fan. But if we are talking shock on stage or who is truly hardcore, I'm sorry, but GG owns here.

Self-mutilation (not faked) with piano wire, broken glass, whatever. Taking a dump and flinging it into the crowd. Urinating on the audience. Just like SeaWorld, if you were in the front you were going to get wet (and not with water). This is the late 80s-early 90s, at the height of the AIDS scare, he's hurling random bodily fluids into the crowd, and considering his drug use, it was very probable he had HIV. His concerts ended with either fights with the audience, complete destruction of the set, or his arrest. GoreBag's 'eat rocks and crap gunpowder' comment definitely applies here. Manson may have someone called Gacy in the band, but the real Gacy did a portrait of GG during one of his visits. It's almost a shame GG never got to do his suicide concert (end result would still be the same), because that would have put the extreme concert ceiling out of reach, and bands would just have to shut up and go back to playing the music.

Again, I'm not critisizing Marilyn Manson. Its just that he has some work to do before he can truly be called shocking or hardcore. Maybe I'm just jaded, ah, the joys of being in the MTV generation...

As an aside, did MM ever get his lower rib removed? I heard that he wanted to do it, never found out if he actually went through with it though.

I didn't mean hardcore as in shocking. Manson does not shock me at the least. I was referring to the anger in the music, and the lyrics, especially in Anti-Christ Superstar. That album is ridiculously hardcore.

Well it isn't a band anymore. I focus on the music, the 'drop the music and just beat up everyone around you in feces' is really boring to me. I have snuff movies for that type of stuff. :laugh4:

No, that was a rumor that was started because he would wear a bloody corset on stage.
