Second time I've seen this now. Before I reinstalled and after a reinstall. The first time I can't remember which faction I was. This time I had started a campaign as the papacy and I had been playing for about an hour and went to save. Hit escape, the screen went black and the background music continued playing, and that's it. I waited about 3 minutes then realising that "it wasn't going to happen" did a ctrl alt del and saw the usual error message, which unfortunately I didn't bother to check as it was getting late! :furious3:

Next time this occurs I'll note down the error. Anyone else had this exact problem? And I don't mean regular CTD's before starting a campaign, What I am referring to is a crash when you hit escape to try to go to the menu.

Yeh, I got them quite often. But since I've installed the XL mod I haven't got the problem ever again.

Yes, it's a common problem - I find it occurs a lot less when I do a "quick save" (Ctrl-S) on the campaign map before hitting ESC to do a proper save.

It's one of the most annoying of all crashes as it usually hits you when you want to save progress after a particularly successful year on the field of battle!

I have the XL mod installed and have just experienced this problem when hitting the end turn button for my 200 year old finely balanced Almohad campaign. Even if I go back to earlier saves in the campaign it occurs, but not for the new campaign as the HRE I've just started.

Ah well, life's short and the HRE are a blast on expert.

And I avoid quicksave because it leads to corrupted saves...

Oh well it seems you can't win either way. I'll have to try quicksaving right at the beginning of a turn and see how that goes. :inquisitive:

The quicksave isn't safe from the bug. not at all; on the contrary, Strg-F5 to me seems to be more liable to it. when I played the Byz in XL, high, at one point the Crusader states attacked me with all they had. my 7-star general and his elite border stack repulsed them in a great battle but the campaign screen never appeared again. period. I only had a quicksave the turn before which inevitably led to the crash no matter if I withdrew or fought :furious3: my last regular save was at least 20 eventful years back so I deceided to kick it.

btw it's not just XL which suffers from the bug. I experienced it in the Super Mod and MedMod as well.

....but hey, maybe it's a different issue altogether because I never got any error messages; it just freezes and in some cases I even had to resort to reset. New installations of MTW don't solve the problem so I pray it doesn't appear and save in both ways

Well I'd never had this problem before, only recently. And I've been playing MTW (and VI) since it's release. Very annoying. :furious3:

Hey guys,

One of the biggest reasons for this problem is people's video drivers. I'm not technically-inclined whatsoever, but in this case I speak with the voice of experience. ~ I dealt with this very same issue a couple months ago, and (on the advice of the good folks in the Apothecary) was able to fix it by downloading & installing different video drivers.

This solution probably won't work for everyone, however, so I strongly urge you to check out the Apothecary (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=15), as there are several threads that address the MTW save/crash problem.
