In the end, a TYVM to The Spartan, Csar and Uesugi Kenshin for being suspicious of me.

That was always going to be the safe ticket out for a while.

Last minute words:
Dutch_guy eagerly wants to know this: EMFM was the first detective.
Killed committee: Council spot please? :eyebrows:
GHC: Technically, Cowhead was killed. ~;p
Kenshin: hats off to you for guessing it was Cowhead early on! Too bad I didn't investigate him.

Don't you mean you decided to keep me alive? I doubt you knew I was detective yet.. ~;)Actually, Dutch_Guy was the poster who guessed it was me early on, not Kenshin. And yes, I didn't know you were the detective yet.

Not really. You forget that you had more people to kill AND had a Detective gunning for you. The mafia definitely had it harder this time around IMHO.You're right, and it will be extremely difficult for the mafia the next game if you decide to add in a doctor or kung-fu master. Also, the villagers would be much more knowledgeable of the strategies used by the mafia the previous two games so they would have a harder time looking innocent. To even things out (if you wanted to add a doctor/kung-fu master), perhaps a third mafioso would need to be added.

Look, Cowhead is also "Lurking in the shadows..." why didn't we pick up on that? Last time it was Shadows who was one of the Mafia.

Cowhead during our many discussions Tiberius believed the mafia to be Lemur and Craterus, however I kept telling him that if it was Lemur you were definately his partner. So I did guess it was you fairly early on.

So I did guess it was you fairly early on.Were these discussions by PM? Because the only person that voted for me this entire game was Dutch_Guy. And I do not recall you ever being suspicious of me in this thread from your posts.:inquisitive:

Kommodus

I have some notes of my own: Between this game and last game, the mafia members have not been suspected all that much (that is, before Tiberius's investigations or Kommodus and his method). I have a theory that explains why: when a poster is selected as a mafioso, he knows that his job is to draw attention away from himself, so he puts all his efforts into acting the part of the innocent. However, when a poster is selected as a regular villager, he thinks that since he is not guilty, he does not need to 'act' innocent. He does not put as much effort into looking innocent as the mafia does so he garners more suspicion.:juggle2:

I think what you're saying is true. Another reason is this: in a traditional game of Mafia, people have other ways of figuring out who is telling the truth and who is lying (i.e. verbal and visual cues). This is especially true when the players know each other, and can pick up on subtle hints. In a forum game, those clues are absent. Therefore, in the beginning, people really have no idea who to vote for. They usually guess, decide based on reasons that have nothing to do with the game, or simply follow the crowd. With those methods, they have to be really lucky to make a correct choice.

I think GHC tries to compensate somewhat for this by adding hints to his commentary. He does this more when the mafia appear to be winning (once again, more than half the people were dead before any mafia were executed). Also, once arguments heat up, something analagous to the verbal and visual cues returns - you really can sometimes tell, simply by the "tone" of a post or the arguments used, whether someone is lying.

Great game all around, if I may say so. A few thoughts:

My kills were as random as I could make them. My only rule was don't kill someone who's being bandied about as a suspect. Hence our disastrous neglect of Tiberius. What's a mafioso to do?

Originally Cow and I were sending GH some truly outlandish kills, but he asked us to tone it down and not be so silly. That's why the first round of deaths were absurd, and the remainder were more-or-less realistic. Maybe less than more, but we tried to obey GH and make the assassinations semi-plausible.

I was enjoying the game somewhat, but once Kommodus and Tiberius named me I had a blast. I considered clamming up and basically saying, "You ain't gonna get nothin' from me, copper." But then I realized that it would be even more fun to spin, lie, confuse, and generally behave in a most un-Lemur-like way. It helps if you know that in RL I will take great pains to avoid ever lying, and have an iron-clad rep for honesty. So this felt like taking the gloves off and behaving in a most enjoyable and unusual way.

I'm honored and astonished that anyone believed any of the outrageous fibs I started telling the minute I was accused. What fun!

Kommodus's voting analysis was a great tool, and I salute his cleverness. Likewise, I think Tiberius was a fantastic detective. And yes, of course I knew he was the real detective from the moment he revealed himself. I just thought it would be bold, reckless and unexpected if I disputed his identity. Tiberius, I apologize for frustrating you, but it really was a lot of fun.

I cooked up a tactic that could have changed the ending -- a nasty bit of cheating that seemed in-character for the amoral wretch of a mafia I was playing, but GH asked me not to use it. A shame. Being underhanded and evil is what being a mafioso is all about.

Again, it was a great game, and I'm sorry I let the mafia side down by losing. Congratulations to the brave villagers and their bold detective!

Thanks Lemur

Don't worry about frustration, at most my parents suffered from it due to my insistence that I pop on the internet during random times of the day. :laugh4: I must admit that it was really luck that got me Lemur, as I just did random guesses at first. Once I got Lemur, though, a whole list of innocents appeared, shortening the list of suspects greatly.

By the way, Lemur, GHC already knew who I chose, so your attempt to stop me failed ~;)

Thanks very much to everyone who participated, in particular GHC, Lemur and Cowhead, making it another great game!

Just for clarification's sake -- I didn't "try" to spam GH's inbox, I did so. Successfully. And I left him a note saying, in essecne, "Since you haven't forbidden this, I'm going to do it." He logged on a bit later, cleared some space in his PMs, and asked me not to keep doing it. So I didn't.

The tactic might have worked or not, had it been carried out. And it probably wouldn't have saved Cow's life.

Oh, that's another thing -- I knew had no hope of living once I was named by the Detective and Kommodus. If I admitted that I was mafia, however, their theories would have iron-clad proof, and Cow would be executed immediately. My entire aim was to kick up enough dust and confusion to give Cow a chance to live.

My strategy (such as it was): Create confusion, implicate Tiberius, prevent the final investigation, and thus give Cow the three turns he needed to win. Didn't work, but a Lemur has to try. And like I said before, it was tremendous fun seeing how much uncertainty and doubt I could plant.

Lemur, the spam was useless. Hanky asked me what I intended to do after I revealed myself, so he answered me before I even PM'ed him ~;p

By the way, GHC, I didn't get an extra one in. I was inactive for a day or two, remember? So it was the same order, but Sasaki and Lemur's investigations both bumped down a round. You forgot to tell me that Lemur killed SSNeo ~:(

Oh, and if the chatroom rumours haven't been explained yet. El stupido here went 'round asking Csar, discovery and Kenshin if they were innocent or not in the chatroom. I found out Kenshin was innocent, since just before his death he agreed to campaign for Lemur's execution.

Final note: hope you forgive me for causing two of your lynchings Lemur. :flowers:

Hey, I've already alerted my children that there is an amnesty for the first one, and I thoroughly deserved the second one. I was a mafioso, after all, so no apology is necessary or appropriate.

To those I killed -- remember, I was being as random as I could. I deliberately took no thought to who I'd kill, since I didn't want any pattern emerging. If only I had been half so clever with how I'd voted ... oh, wait, that wouldn't have helped me one bit, since the brave detective was on my case from round three or so.

Again, wonderful game, and the villagers have a well-earned win. But next game, the odds of my being mafia are infinitely small, so try not to lynch me again, ok? Let a lemur get assassinated just once, for Pete's sake.

I'm back. Though Lemur has said that his victims were picked at random, I actually had reasons for all my murders. Eclectic had joined past the deadline, so I made him pay for it. I figured that since Peasant Phill provided most of the village's food, cutting off the food supply would be an appropiate mafia tactic.

Discovery1 and Crazed Rabbit had been named innocent by the faux-detective, so I had them killed. Kagemusha's comment about us being 'newbie mafiosos' ultimately sealed his doom. I had originally planned to frame Tiberius with the killing of Uesugi Kenshin, but I dropped that and this pick was mostly random. I then killed Ice because Tiberius proved to everyone he was innocent.

Regarding the last kills, I thought about killing Kommodus and Krazelic to put a damper on Tiberius's credibility, but ultimately decided against it because I was leaving soon. Though some of the villagers had said that Tiberius would be executed if he didn't die the next round, I thought that he would be able to fight back and effectively convince the remaining villagers that it was a mafia attempt to stay alive. Also, since Tiberius's investigations and Kommodus's method caused the entire end-game mess, I wanted the joy of eliminating them from the game.:skull:

Oh, and congratulations villagers for your victory, though it hurts me to say it...:2thumbsup:

Surely it should be Return of the Mafia or Revenge of the Mafia? Including angry mafiosi wielding huge lightsabers, chopping up villagers and then being reprimanded by a tiny green detective...

Mafia: Revolutions? Clash of the titans in a final, ultimate mafia showdown on who can conjure up the craziest killing methods before being shut out of the Mafia.

I was actually thinking Revenge of the Mafia for the next one. While (hopefully) this will be more than a trilogy, it seems like the third Return of the... movies have been pertaining to good things (ex. King, Jedi) whereas Revenge of the... has pertained to bad things.

Not for lack of trying, although once I remembered that you had voted for me, I changed my kill. Such is the danger of being random. Cow and GeneralH can testify that I tried to kill an already-dead person at least twice.
